      Book Description

Is the virtual charter public school a viable alternative to traditional education? Virtual Charter Schools and Home Schooling is a rich and insightful study that undertakes a comprehensive investigation to answer this important question. It strongly makes the case for this idea with one of the first comprehensive investigations of the relationship between virtual charter schools and home schooling. Benefits as well as drawbacks or limitations to both parties are examined using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies. "This book is exactly what we need to know about the potential and current results of one type of charter, virtual, home schooling network. Her research adds much to our current understanding and can serve as a model for more inquiry and reasoned dialogue. There is much to be learned by studying all aspects of alternative school efforts--Dr. Klein, a public school educator, with more than 20 years of experience, is to be congratulated for the clarity and insight she brings to the discussion." - Mary Poplin, Professor of Education, Claremont Graduate University

      4 out of 5 stars Timely Collection!.......2003-10-08

Albalooshi has produced a most timely and useful collection of the latest research findings in the field of virtual education. There are eighteen papers, from authors from right across the World, collected into five sections. Most commendable, and unusual, in an edited collection such as this is that the whole book is properly indexed. I strongly recommend this book.

        Description:
There are certain simple rotations of objects that most people cannot reason about accurately. Reliable gaps in the understanding of a fundamental physical domain raise the question of how learning to reason in that domain might proceed. Using virtual reality techniques, this project investigated the nature of learning to reason across the domain of simple rotations. Learning consisted of the acquisition of spatial intuitions: there was encoding of useful spatiotemporal information in specific problem types and a gradual accumulation of this understanding across the domain. This pattern of learning through the accumulation of intuitions is especially interesting for rotational motion, in which an elegant domain-wide kinematics is available to support insightful learning. Individual ability to reason about rotations correlated highly with mastery motivation, skill in fluid reasoning, and skill in reasoning about spatial transformations. Thus, general cognitive advantages aided the understanding of individual rotations without guaranteeing immediate generalization across the domain.

In this paper we take an interactivist perspective on the computer-mediated classroom, and explore the autopoietic teaching approach in the context of emergence of diversity in the classroom. The POPSICLE (Patterns in Orientation: Pattern-Aided Simulated Interaction Context-Learning Experiment) is presented and discussed, as well as its multiple consequences. POPSICLE is a study of learning in human subjects, as well as of interaction and transfer of knowledge between subjects in a collaborative environment.

            Description:
The utility of applying a virtual learning network model for illustrating successful triple bottom line transitions-one that integrates the ecological, economic, and social dimensions of cleaner production-is illustrated by a successful approach to promote ''green chemistry'' in the North Carolina textile wet-processing industry. This case is unique in demonstrating the quality of this process to develop cleaner production methods; it shows how reducing aquatic toxicity and harmful environmental effects in a ''real world'' situation depends on successful efforts to build, manage, and maintain an inter-organizational network of multiple stakeholders. This network included industries in the textile production chain, their local and provincial communities, regulators and policy makers. The utilization of cases such as this in the business school pedagogy expands understanding of the role of sustainable practices in enterprise management. The value of this specific case in promoting the understanding of such networks was demonstrated in a recent MBA experience when students trained in these areas linked diverse stakeholders and applied the triple bottom line perspective in traditional business simulation exercises in an MBA capstone course. Such cases can also effectively prepare students for actual challenges facing managers in the rapidly changing business environment.

                    Book Description

Throughout the world, schools, universities, and industry have begun to use virtual instruction to expand their outreach to learners and to promote collaboration and exchange among educators. As these virtual communities encompass the globe, questions regarding the nature of teaching learning, and communicating in a technology-embedded, multicultural, and border-free environment have arisen. The essays in this book clarify predominant theoretical issues that pertain to this new form of computer-mediated, interactive distance learning and offer practical suggestions for implementing virtual instruction programs. Addressing a variety of instructional technologies (e.g., web-based instruction, videoconferencing), the book examines virtual instruction from different perspectives, including economics, sociology, communication, and learning theory. Invaluable to educators and students of teacher education, instructional design, technology, and communication, the book will appeal to anyone involved in or w

                      Book Description

What does it mean "to dell?" This newly coined business verb means to mass-customize, making products only in response to actual demand. This allows a product to "go direct" to a customer, and it's what Dell Computer does instead of forcing mass-produced computers on its customers. And Dell's not alone.

As Editors Jim Gilmore and Joe Pine point out in their introduction to Markets of One, mass customization is a trend that has caught on among consumer and business-to-business companies alike - think of Levi's jeans, Aramark's hospital services, Select Comfort mattresses, and Peapod or Streamline grocery delivery, to name a few. Companies customize their offerings to meet the unique needs of individual customers so that nearly everyone can obtain exactly what they want at a reasonable price. It's a paradigm shift away from the one-size-fits-all way managers have thought about markets over the past century- today, every individual customer is a market of one.

This collection of ten Harvard Business Review articles chronicles the evolution of business competition from mass markets to markets of one-in other words, from creating standardized value through mass production to creating customer-unique value through mass customization. The book examines many of the resulting changes in approach to strategy and operations-for example, moving from pushing products to fulfilling individual needs, from focusing solely on market share to measuring customer share, and from marketing to the masses to cultivating learning relationships with each customer. Markets of One offers the best of the leading thinkers on the topic, exploring both the promise and pitfalls of mass customization. Practical applications are presented with examples of leading companies who successfully mass customize for markets of one. A Harvard Business Review Book

                      4 out of 5 stars A Great Read for Today's Entrepreneur.......2005-07-30

The dilemma: technology has created a scenario in which virtually infinite supply and variety are possible. When supply is infinite, opportunities for profit disappear. How then, can companies make money?

This book addresses this fundamental issue, and shows how companies can create and market viable business models in today's business environment. Internet entrepreneurs who feel like they have a great idea but are unsure of the specifics as to how it should be constructed will find this to be a very valuable book. You may not find all of it to be worthwhile, but the ideas you do grab will be immensely useful.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless yet generally fresh, worth the re-read.......2002-06-11

Have read most of the authors in this volume, but still refer back to my yellow hi-liting and post-it tabs. Tempting to read only executive summaries, but these fail to capture the needed depth provided in the chapters. One of the better compilations I've come across in some time. Probably only thing that's missing is "how to." I suspect that requires more than just deep thinking, but a cross-disciplinary team.

5 out of 5 stars Mass Customization: A Paradigm of Paradox.......2000-11-04

Gilmore and Pine co-authored The Experience Economy, a book I consider one of the most important business books written in recent years. In this volume, they anthologize ten essays which -- together -- answer questions such as these:

                      1. What is "the emerging theory of manufacturing"? (Peter Drucker)

                      2. How to market in "the age of diversity"? (Regis McKenna)

                      3. How to manage in "an age of modularity"?

                      4. Do you want to keep your customers forever? (Pine, Don Peppers, and Martha Rogers)

                      5. Is your company ready for one-to-one marketing? (Peppers, Rogers, and Bob Dorf)

                      6. What are the correlations between "breaking compromises" and "breakaway growth"? (George Stalk, Jr., David K. Pecault, and Benjamin Burnett)

                      7. What are the "four faces" of mass customization"? (Gilmore and Pine)

                      8. What is "versioning"? Why is it the smart way to sell information? (Carl Shapiro and Hal R. Varian)

                      9. How to make mass customization work? (Pine, Bart Victor, and Andrew C. Boynton)

                      10. What does "managing by wire" involve? (Stephan H. Haeckel and Richard L. Nolan)

At the conclusion of their book, the authors also provide immensely helpful "Executive Summaries" of key points made in each of the various essays, and, brief but informative comments about those who wrote them. If you are looking for the single best source of information and about mass customization, look no further.

3 out of 5 stars Repeated ideas, though good.......2000-03-04

Good book but too much repeated from "Mass Customization"...the author's excellent preceding title.

5 out of 5 stars From mass customization to versioning..........2000-03-01

This book is a winner! I've relied on mass customization strategies in my consulting practice for the past 5 years. These strategies allow consultants to win the speed-to-market wars while still providing high quality deliverables. Also, the chapter on "versioning" is a mind blower, and is definitely relevant to e-publishers everywhere. You can't go wrong with this contemporary business text.

                      4 out of 5 stars A PhD student's review.......2001-07-21

This book is a must have for the burgeoning doctoral candidate or graduate student. I am a student working on my Ph.D. in ORSA and find SPSS to be a wonderful and powerful statistical tool; however, maneuvering around on the SPSS tool bar and interpreting output can be extremely frustrating. This book really fills in the gaps on data manipulation and analyzing output that most graduate and post graduate class texts skip over. When I was working on my master's degree in 1996, I attended a 2-day course from the SPSS corporation on regression models. I was given a three ring binder as part of my course materials. Back in 1996, there were not a lot of books that taught you to manipulate data in SPSS. As a result, the three ring binder I got as part of my SPSS course really saved the day and helped me complete my graduate thesis. I even loaned out my binder on numerous occasions to my fellow students (and even professors). Anyway, I was pleased to see that this Regression Models 10.0 book is the advanced, professional version of what used to be handed out in costly, pay SPSS courses. A lot of the material in this book is similar to my 1996 three-ring binder. But it is organized better and contains much more useful information (graphs, charts and explanations). You can tell the SPSS corporation has put a few years into this book and obviously updated it based on feedback from students over the many years of classroom instruction. The only criticisms I have (which prevented me from giving it all 5 stars) include:

                      1. This book does not come with a reference disk: The binder I got in 1996 from the SPSS corporation (which is very similar to this book in many ways), had a 3.5" disk with the same data on it that was used in the binder to get the various output models. This disk was (is) handy because when I am playing with new data sets, I sometimes go back to my old SPSS binder and plug in some of the data from that binder to make sure I am doing the procedures right on my own data set.

                      2. There is no glossary: If you are using SPSS; and especially running logistic regression models, you should probably already know what a -2LL and the difference between the Cox & Snell R2 and Nagelkerke R2. However, for the fatigued graduate student or Ph.D. candidate, it would sure be nice to be able to have a glossary to validate the meanings of some terms at 2AM after a long 16-hour study day. Yes, there is a very comprehensive glossary already contained on the SPSS CD-ROM that can be accessed from SPSS while on the computer - but I'd rather have some significant and selected terms in the back of my book.

                      3. This book doesn't give you guidelines for interpreting statistics. For instance, anyone who has ever taken one semester of statistics should know that a p-value less than .05 is significant. However, even doctoral candidates sometimes can't remember if a significant Wald statistic is suppose to greater than 1.0 or 2.0? This book has a lot of good discussion, but I'd prefer a little summary table at the back of the book with constraints for the various statistics.

All in all, a great book and a must have for any graduate or doctoral student! I am glad I can finally retire my 5-year-old binder and begin using the "evolved version" of this book to help me complete my disertation!
