Book Description
`Jagdish Gundara has made a very substantial contribution to the field with this work and it is to the rest of us to make connections with it and help in the gigantic tasks of finding solutions'-
Tony Booth, Canterbury Christ Church University, British Journal of Educational Studies
`This work deals with the question of how education can help in the task of developing cohesive civil societies by turning notions of singular identities into those of multiple ones, and by developing a shared and common value system and public culture. Jadgish S Gundara begins with a mini-biography of his own history, which he describes as an "intercultural apprenticeship", and in which the interweaving of different strands of identity is strikingly described. His first chapter then presents "Multicultural Britain". Here Jadgish S Gundara argues that the post-war immigrant presence has highlighted aspects of British historical diversity - Britain's permanent multi-culturalism and addresses issues of group identity, culture and racism. Following chapters discuss basic issues in intercultural education; practicing intercultural education; post-school intercultural education; interculturalism in Europe; the role of the state; building a common and shared value system; Asian and global perspectives; and knowledge, social science and the curriculum. Jadgish S Gundara has a personal perspective on education issues influenced by his involvement for many years. This is an eloquent book' -
Race Relations
`Jagdish S Gundara's own early experiences have given him unique insights into both the problems and the possibilities of relationships between cultures. His book reflects a life dedicated to fostering positive intercultural relations and provides an analysis of the role of education in overcoming the barriers. All who are interested in building genuinely inclusive notions of education and citizenship will benefit from reading this impressive book' -
Geoff Whitty, Karl Mannheim Professor of Sociology of Education, University of London
`This is a most interesting, accessible and useful book, which deserves to be read by a wide range of education practitioners from school, further education and not least the policy makers in these sectors' -
Stephen Bigger, Escalate
Jagdish S Gundara raises a range of critical issues for educators as a consequence of historical and contemporary aspects of social diversity. Using a historical and social science framework, the author examines issues concerning national minorities and immigrant communities. He outlines a view of multicultural Britain, and shows how education at all levels needs to change to embrace an intercultural position. The book also deals with interculturalism in Europe and Asia, the role of state organizations, and the need to foster `communities of hope'.
Based on the authors professional experience in schools, the community and further and higher education, the book assumes no detailed knowledge, and aims to make the concepts of intercultural education accessible to a wide audience.

Planning and policy analysis: transportation, equity analysis, emergency management, group decision making
-
Operational decision making: nuclear power monitoring, emergency response, public safety warning, satellite tracking
-
Commercial applications: GIS from IIASA, InterClair from IAEA, EPA software, cleanup decision support software survey. This book is meant for researchers, who will find the emerging issues in risk management that are motivated by the encounter of new tasks and novel technology; practitioners who will have descriptions and references of the state-of-the-art models and software; and students who will learn the basic concepts needed to develop advanced information and decision support systems in risk management.

Book Description
This unique manual is a comprehensive, easy-to-read overview of hazards analysis as it applies to the process and allied industries. The book begins by building a background in the technical definition of risk, past industrial incidents and their impacts, ensuing legislation, and the language and terms of the risk field. It addresses the different types of structured analytical techniques for conducting Process Hazards Analyses (PHA), provides a "What If" checklist, and shows how to organize and set up PHA sessions. Other topics include layout and siting considerations, Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA), human factors, loss of containment, and PHA team leadership issues.
Customer Reviews:
Very practical - down to the facts.......2007-04-10
This is a very practical and probably one of the best books available for everyone who wants to understand the buzz words of Functional Safety.
The Process Hazards Analysis techniques should be read/studied and understood by all process/instrumentation engineers and plant managers.
That would be a good start and avoid industrial incidents like Bhopal, Piper Alpha, Texas City and unfortunately some more to follow...

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Hazardous Materials, published by Elsevier in . The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
This paper describes the development of a management model to control barriers devised to prevent major hazard scenarios. Additionally, an audit technique is explained that assesses the quality of such a management system. The final purpose of the audit technique is to quantify those aspects of the management system that have a direct impact on the reliability and effectiveness of the barriers and, hence, the probability of the scenarios involved. First, an outline of the management model is given and its elements are explained. Then, the development of the audit technique is described. Because the audit technique uses actual major hazard scenarios and barriers within these as its focus, the technique achieves a concreteness and clarity that many other techniques often lack. However, this strength is also its limitation, since the full safety management system is not covered with the technique. Finally, some preliminary experiences obtained from several test sites are compiled and discussed.

Description:
Process hazard analysis (PHA) is widely used across a spectrum of industries and facilities, but there are few metrics for the evaluation and assessment of PHAs. Most existing protocols address PHA solely in terms of regulatory compliance, but do not address the completeness or depth of the assessment, as most PHAs have been performed on a ''performance basis'' under the relevant regulations. It is possible to objectively assess PHAs, in order to determine adequacy of completion and degree of review, using both audit protocol and scoring approaches. Audit protocol approaches offer simplicity and ease of use, and when combined with specific scoring for adequacy allow for informed decisions about remedial action with respect to the PHA.

Description:
The survey made within companies in the frame of the Leonardo da Vinci project ''Technological Training for SME's'' (Leonardo da Vinci project CZ/98/1/82530/PI/III.1.a/FPI ''Technological Training for SME's'' (1998-2001)[1]), English version. Ostrava: b.n., 2001 (coordinator A. Labodova)) documented the need for effective ways of integrating currently separate management systems for quality management, environmental management and health and safety. According to the evolution of such management systems, it is increasingly desirable and feasible to integrate these systems into one complex system for each company. Different approaches for integrating and gaining advantages from this integration are reviewed in this paper. Two ways of integration are discussed-firstly the introduction of individual systems followed by the integration of the originally separate systems, and secondly the development and implementation of an integrated management system, integrated from the very beginning. The procedure of a detailed methodology for the implementation of an occupational health and safety system, which was developed within research for Ph.D. thesis (Labodova A. The implementation of integrated management system. Ph.D. thesis, VSB-Technical University Ostrava, Czech Republic; 2002) based on an established risk assessment methodology (Risk Management. Leonardo da Vinci project no. CZ/98/1/82530/PI/III.1.a/FPI ''Technological Training for SME's'', English version. Ostrava: b.n., 2001, Module 3, Level 3 (project coordinator A. Labodova)), was used as a particular system approach and also for the implementation of integrated management system based on risk analysis on greenfield. Both ways were tested in the form of case studies. Both case studies have demonstrated the functioning of the theoretical model for implementation of risk analysis based management systems.
