    Book Description

The story of the Edison Schools is a gripping tale of money, kids, and greed. What began in the 1980s as an enterprise to transform public schools quickly became a troubled business battling falling test scores and dismal stock prices. How did the most ambitious for-profit education company in U.S. history lose respect, money, and credibility in such a short time?

Revealing how American "McEducation" went from glory to crisis, The Edison Schools tracks entrepreneur Christopher Whittle's plan to introduce a standardized nationwide curriculum and cut administrative waste. Education specialist Kenneth J. Saltman finds that the critics' predictions came true in Edison schools across the country: Experienced teachers left in droves, students were virtually given answers to standardized tests to drive up scores, and difficult students were "counselored" out.

Saltman uses the Edison saga to highlight key debates about the role of schools in American democracy and illuminate broader issues of privatization and cultural diversity. Showing how the profit motive helped created "Edron," the book will force teachers, parents, students, and general readers to reconsider the role of private money in this critical part of our public life.

    * A full expose of the Edison schools, the largest attempt ever to privatize public education
    * Uses the schools to study larger issues of accountability, trust in our institutions, and the social role of public education
    * Uncovers the reasons for the collapse of Edison, from falsified score reports and accounting scandals to a near-takeover by right-wing radicals
Kenneth J. Saltman is the co-editor of Education as Enforcement, and author of Collateral Damage and Strange Love: Or How We Learn to Stop Worrying and Love the Market.

Saltman has left no stone unturned in his examination of Edison Schools. From the business practices and economic theory behind the very idea of privatizing schools to the curricular and pedagogical theory that drive the schools' daily activities, he covers every aspect of Edison and of Chris Whittle's mission. Saltman's writing is detailed and thorough, defending and proving his arguments with ample evidence and providing ideas for the future of schooling in America.

Very readable (even if you don't like non-fiction), well-organized and absolutely indispensible in the discussion of school privatization.

    5 out of 5 stars Dueling Visions.......2005-03-26

The role of public schools in a democratic society is undergoing scrutiny on a scale never before seen in this country. Do schools exist primarily to educate thinking voters or to provide docile workers for multinational corporations? Kenneth J. Saltman reveals the real motives of neoliberals who are behind the carefully orchestrated campaign to privatize all schools under the guise of helping children. It's a true story that contains all the elements of a thriller movie. And the author tells it exceedingly well, using the Edison Schools as the focal point. Concerned citizens need to read "The Edison Schools" in conjunction with the excellent "Why Is Corporate America Bashing Our Public Schools?" by Kathy Emery and Susan Ohanian. Both books describe how corporations are hijacking American education. While Saltman confines his case to the Edison Schools, Emery and Ohanian go beyond one company in delivering a compelling manifesto.

5 out of 5 stars Actually, Just About Any Process of Production.......2001-10-27

Although the subtitle correctly suggests that this book offers "a guide to state-of-the art of manufacturing", I was surprised and pleased to discover that almost all of the material is also directly relevant to processes that do not involve manufacturing but do involve production. Of new and better ideas, for example. Also, how to refine and then integrate the best of those ideas within and throughout an organization. Although it may not have been the primary purpose of the authors, this book has wide and deep application to almost any process in need of improved cycle time, first pass yield, and on-time delivery.

Moody has carefully selected and brilliantly organized a series of essays by a diversity of experts. Her objective is quite specific: to provide many approaches to the basic question of how to compete more successfully. Each section is preceded by an overview. The book is carefully organized so that each chapter stands alone. It remains for each reader to draw correlations -- between and among individual essays -- which are most relevant to the reader's specific needs and interests. When read in its entirety, the book's presentation of manufacturing strategy proceeds from theory and analysis of company and industry through formulation of appropriate competitive strategy to the tactics required to execute that strategy." The essays are organized within five parts: Historical Perspective, The Strategic Manufacturing Planning Process, New Strategies, Management Focus, and Dynamics of Change.

Who will derive the greatest benefit from this book? Certainly, any decision-maker who is involved at any level of the manufacturing process but also, not to belabor the point, decision-makers in non-manufacturing organizations with the same objective: to compete more successfully by establishing and then sustaining constant and rigorous process] improvement. I wholly agree with Ciampa's caveats: "Don't believe that yesterday's answers will work on today's questions....Don't believe that people who have done things one way for years will change their behavior easily if at all....Don't believe you can do it all yourself....Don't believe that you can anticipate everything or that you don't need any game plan at all....Don't believe the old adage,'If it ain't broke, don't fix it!' which flies in the face of every principle of preventive maintenance." He concludes, "The wise leader is always looking for opportunities to make things better before they break. The cost of repairing a broken organization is enormous compared to the fine-tuning and constructive change required to keep it sharp." Moody and her associates are to be commended for providing, in a single volume, an abundance of valuable information in combination with wisdom of unique practicality.

The authors have done good job by compiling research papers of course most of their own. But still book is in between research papers and good text book. No one can recommend this book to newbie in the field of AI. Over all its a nice book addressing application of AI techniques for mechanical engineering problems.Very rare book available of this kind. Good job.

5 out of 5 stars Applying Modern Techniques to Manufacturing.......2006-04-14

Manufacturing optimization is the systematic and scientific approach for solving problems concerned with various manufacturing functions to make the best production decisions.

Over the history of manufacturing various techniques for solving manufacturing problems have been derived. These are examined at the start of this book to illustrate what was done in the past and to serve as a baseline upon which to build the more advanced techniques that have been developed more recently.

From this base Dr. Saravanan goes on to discuss multivariable techniques, genetic algorithms, optimal design for manufacturing , optimization of machining tolerance allocation, optimization of operating parameters for CNC machine tools, scheduling optimization, and finally modern manufacturing applications.

It is intended that by the end of this book, the reader be able to select and implement suitable optimization procedures and algorithms for a wide variety of problems.

    Book Description

The only book on the market devoted to sequential simplex optimizationThis book presents an easy-to-learn, effective optimization technique that can be applied immediately to many problems in the real world. The sequential simplex is an evolutionary operation (EVOP) technique that uses experimental results-it does not require a mathematical model. The authors present their subject with a level of detail and clarity that is refreshingly welcome in a technical text. The basics are presented first, followed by a detailed discussion of the fine points needed to get the most out of this optimization technique. Worksheets are provided and their use is illustrated with step-by-step worked examples. This makes the logic and calculations of the simplex algorithms easy to understand and follow. The text also provides more than 200 figures and over 500 references to sequential simplex applications, which allows rapid access to specific examples of the use of the technique in a wide range of applications.Sequential Simplex Optimization: A Technique for Improving Quality and Productivity in Research, Development, and Manufacturing is essential for any student or professional who desires to learn this innovative technique quickly and easily.

5 out of 5 stars Great technique, not that easy.......2007-02-20

I can attest that SS works great to optimize quickly. However, trying to do it using this book was way hard compared to using Multisimplex software. The guy who said you could do it on a calculator could make himself a few bucks putting out some inexpensive shareware program to do it. Like I said, the technique itself is good stuff as long as you are not interested in mathematically modelling your system.

4 out of 5 stars All the optimization most people will ever need........2003-08-05

Want to quickly optimize a formula, process, or procedure? Don't want to spend a fortune on statistical experimental design software? Don't want to spend time learning how to use software to handle mixtures, constraints, expanded designs and all that rot? Buy this book (if you can find it), and you can get the same results the statistician would, with just a hand calculator, or pencil and paper. The only difference is you won't have a lot of fancy graphs to show off your results (although you could do that if necessary).

Too bad this book is out of print. An electronic copy used to be available free on the web, but I haven't seen it lately.

From the author: Economic specification limits have typically been developed on the basis of a single quality characteristic. From the viewpoint of the customer, products are often evaluated based on multiple quality characteristics. The specification region for multiple quality characteristics must be determined on an economic basis where we minimize the total loss to both the producer and the customer and thus to the whole society. In this paper a multivariate normal distribution is considered for the quality characteristics. The specification region is given by truncating the multivariate normal distribution. We present the optimization model to develop the specification region for multiple quality characteristics based on the framework of multivariate quality loss function.

        Book Description

In modern manufacturing, it is not simply the equipment that is increasingly complex but rather the entire business system in which a company operates. Convoluted supply chains, complicated resource flows, advanced information systems: all must be taken into account when designing or reengineering a manufacturing system. Introducing a powerful yet easy-to-follow method, Process Oriented Analysis: Design and Optimization of Industrial Production Systems offers clear and practical guidance on applying this proven analytical technique to any type of manufacturing operation. Linking abstract theoretical concepts to real-world implementation, this book outlines the principles of Process Oriented Analysis (POA) and demonstrates the application of these concepts using actual case studies. The authors first present the diagrams and analytical tools used in POA to represent both the static structure and dynamic behavior of the system. They then demonstrate how to build a simulation model by translating the diagram components into usable source code. Software for generating these types of diagrams is available for download from the Internet, along with a thorough tutorial that includes questions and interactive case studies. Taking a consistent approach that anyone in the organization can use and understand, Process Oriented Analysis is the perfect resource for planning, designing, debugging, and optimizing modern production systems.

From the author: The effect of the screw configuration of a closely intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruder on residence time and mixing efficiency was studied for an uncompatibilized immiscible PA6/PP (80:20) bend. Alternative screw configurations were investigated systematically. The residence time distribution (RTD) was found to be a poor indicator of the total mixing efficiency, whereas the mixing intensity function yielded considerably better information. High shear stress, sufficient residence time, and high fill ratio in the melting section of the screw were the most important factors in achieving good dispersion of the minor phase. The evolution of morphology along the screw axis depended strongly on the screw configuration. The downstream flow characteristics after the screw end determined the final morphology of the blend.
