3 out of 5 stars Boring, but then again what education book isn't?.......2007-05-15

If the professor says "buy this book," all the poor saps in the class say, "Yes, ma'am" (or sir, as the case may be). The graphic organizers in this book are massive and for that reason partially confusing, but I lived through the book, I imagine you will too.

          Book Description

Logistics and the Extended Enterprise is the result of a four-year, $1 million research project devoted to the study of best practices in supply chain management—a necessity for companies that want to be competitive in a global business environment. Written by members of the University of Maryland's Supply Chain Management Center, this important book takes a first-of-its-kind look at supply chain and logistics/transportation management organization structure. It offers a paradigm for successfully implementing a global supply chain and explains the role logistics plays in enabling this approach.

The book answers the question of how organizations can best apply supply chain management practices to break down internal and external walls and become more effective extended enterprises, with a focus on lessons learned at some of the world's leading corporations. The authors gained first-hand insights into this subject through interviews, site visits, focus groups, and targeted surveys involving over 600 companies across a broad range of industries. This book summarizes their core research findings and conclusions, using case studies from such companies as Amoco, DuPont, Johnson & Johnson, UPS, Georgia Pacific, and others.

Logistics and the Extended Enterprise will provide the reader with both the conceptual and analytic tools necessary to manage a global supply chain and put a world-class logistics operation in place.

                Description:
Despite containing an extensive body of normative or prescriptive studies, quality management literature offers little by way of generally applicable guidance concerning how to measure or monitor the critical factors underlying strategic quality management initiatives, such as total quality management and continuous quality improvement. Although several studies have relied on survey data from a multiple set of sources to unearth models of such factors, they do not offer general guidelines to select factors appropriate in a specific setting. In this paper, in contradistinction to the multiple-source survey methodology, we take an action-research approach and present the findings of a contextually specific, single-site empirical research that we carried out at Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems, in Fort Worth, Texas. We discuss the implications of our findings for extending our empirical understanding of the factors underlying strategic quality management programs and for the development of reliable and valid instruments to monitor them.

I used this book for a Business Statistics gradute class. While the book was sometimes tough to get through, I found the chapter summaries and online quizzes (via the CD-Rom) extremely helpful. In fact, I studied the online quizzes and pulled a B+ on my midterm. I would recommend this book to any student of statistics.

There is not much I can say about this book. The book speaks far better for itself than ever I could hope to. I congratulate the author. I had read lectures on Systems Analysis and Design to Graduate Students (not on informatics)and my reference book was this one. Obviously, authors applied their past experience to present a complex task in a very amenous and readable way. Of course, I will use it again in my next courses. Some years ago, I used several times in my courses, with good results, the book "Systems Analysis and Design. Best Practices" by the same authors.

                    Description:
Support tools for strategic-level decision-making have become increasingly popular. This study investigates the role of OR/MS tools in today's strategic-level decision support tool market. Executives working in Finland's 500 largest companies were asked about the decision support tools they use when making major decisions. The responses received indicated that executives actively use a variety of tools, and an average of five different strategic-level tools. Approximately 10% of the tools used could be identified as OR/MS type, these often suit the needs of larger companies with strategic logistical or production functions and compared to other tools, have a specific profile. Executives see advantages in using tools that provide cognitive, collaboration and communication possibilities, and also in using tools that make processes more efficient. OR methodologies have influenced some of the other tools on the market, but 'soft OR' tool usage could not be identified. Tools which support creativity are needed.

                    Book Description

Knowledge-Driven Work is a pioneering study of the cross-cultural iffusion of ideas about the organization of work. These ideas, linked with the knowledge of the workforce, are rapidly becoming the primary source of competitive advantage in the world economy. The book provides an in-depth look at eight Japanese-affiliated manufacturing facilities operating in the United States, combined with examinations of their sister facilities in Japan. The authors offer their insights into the complex process by which elements of work systems in one country interact with those in another. They trace the flow of ideas from Japan to the US and other nations, and the beginnings of a reverse diffusion of innovation back to Japan. The authors organize their findings into six categories: the cross-cultural diffusion of work practices, team-based work systems, kaizen and employee involvement, employment security, human resource management, and labor-management relations. Their study of team-based work systems yields a taxonomy of teams and reveals some conflicts between the desire for self-management and the existence of interdependencies. Investigations into kaizen (ongoing incremental improvement) indicate that its emphasis on employee-driven, systematic problem solving makes it a strong counterpoint to the idea of top-down "re-engineering." Looking at employment security, the authors note that while most US managers believe that it restrains managerial flexibility, managers at the firms they observed see it as essential to the flexibility associated with teamwork and kaizen. The study of human resource management practices suggests competitive advantages in diverse, older, unionized, and urban work forces, and emphasizes the importance of wide-ranging training programs in a work system premised on a long-term perspective. The "wildcard" in the work places observed is labor-management relations, the area in which Japanese managers have been least likely to import their ideas. The authors report on several situations in which existing labor-management structures remained untouched, with mixed results: greater labor-management consultation, for example, but also increased ambiguity of roles. The thread running through all of these areas of work is "virtual knowledge," an ephemeral form of knowledge derived from a particular combination of people focused on a given issue. The authors point out that this powerful form of knowledge is only effectively harnessed in environments that are free of fear, that have established procedures for collective problem-solving, and that have some stability in group composition. They claim that too often companies allow virtual knowledge to dissipate, squandering opportunities to create more competitive workplaces. For those organizations that have succeeded in anticipating and channeling it, however, virtual knowledge leads to a knowledge-driven workplace and continuous improvement.
