        Book Description

As the way work is done changes and as organizations "flatten themselves down" in response to demands posed by the new global economy, managers on the front lines, where some say the real work is done, need a broader set of skills than ever before. They must learn to see their jobs differently--to become tougher and more durable--but they must also become more flexible in how they interact with the organization itself and its changing work and economic environments. The authors emphasize key tasks that front-line managers must do today, such as strategic planning, budgeting, quality management, and benchmarking, and how they must focus attention on their customers, until now far removed and perhaps out of mind. They must also recognize the need for effective information systems and find ways to align their immediate work units with larger organizational strategies and processes. In short, the authors offer essentially a new paradigm for the way management should now be practiced in a far-ranging book that today's managers will need to keep pace with changes that could threaten their careers, and a book that offers others on the way up a way to start their own careers on the right foot. Becoming an effective front-line manager starts with understanding the job. The authors begin with a comprehensive look at what it means to be a front-line manager and the special challenges they face. They must become all things to all people, say the authors, and at the same time consider other, perhaps unfamiliar challenges, such as safety and health concerns. Front-line managers today must also learn to grow and adapt to changing work environments. The authors present an extensive view of these new tasks and roles and detail the ways in which front-line managers can address and overcome the obstacles they will find. The book is a readable, thought-provoking study of special interest to teachers of general management courses on the undergraduate and graduate levels.

              Book Description

Are business conflicts in China resolved in much the same way as elsewhere? Or are they handled altogether differently? Setting out in search of an answer, Jie Tang immersed herself in the day-to-day operation of a major construction project in China that brought together participants from around the globe.

The result is this in-depth account of the inner workings of the Chinese business world. It follows the progress of construction from tendering to completion in an attempt to understand the progress and problems on the project as seen through the eyes of the participants. It also delves into how conflicts grew out of the structure of the project, as well as the broader contest in which it operated. In doing so, Managers and Mandarins in China touches on such issues as differing international standards and management procedures; the peculiarities of Chinese red tape; tensions between contractors; paternalism and nepotism; the role of campaigns and the limits on contract in contemporary China. The work traces the increasing involvement of local officials in the work of the project, examining the reasons for this and its consequences for management.

Of interest to scholars and managers alike, this study benefits from the unparalleled access the author was able to secure to all the parties involved, Chinese and Western, commercial and governmental. Working alongside managers as a participant observer, the author uses the fine detail characteristics of ethnography to convey a vivid impression of how they faced up to conflict, intrigue, danger and a race against time. The result is a unique insight into the lives of managers in China today and the forces with which they have to contend.

                  1 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2001-08-12

For one who lived in Corvallis at the time referred to in this book, and still lives there, this book is an amusing concept, and I'm passing it around to others here for a belly laugh. The quote that Gerald was "Obviously the results were impressive, and Seals was off to South Carolina" hardly reflects the feelings of the citizenry at the time I think. My own opinion is that this book be relegated to the history of Sunday Funnies section. It's amusing.

This is the best practical book on management that I have ever read. It gives general information that every manager should know, and it gives specific strategies to deal with management problems and concerns. I liked how Plenert shows that people perform based on what you measure them by. I also like how he stated that in order to be a World Class Manager, you must first become a World Class Person.

A must-have reference for anyone coveting a piece of Haiti's "go-go" economy. Its authors do an admirably thorough job of scouring the countryside for deeply contrarian business opportunities, rather than limiting themselves to the usual suspects in Port Au Prince's industrial and technological corridor. I'll admit it - I originally bought this guide on something of a lark, specifically as a gift for our family's trustee. By way of background, the trust department of an esteemed Boston bank has been abetting the decline of the Higgensworth clan for almost a century. Each generation, a new trustee is granted absolute authority over our assets (think of it as a serial dictatorship along the lines of North Korea, with the sole oppressee being our finances). During the Eisenhower era they poured millions of Higgensworth dollars (yes, there were millions of them once) into Wham-O! Corporation stock just as the Frisbee and Hula Hoop manias were collapsing. Under Carter they bought a large stake in a Chiclets factory in Iran, which did wonderfully until Khomeini took over and turned it into an interrogation center for unveiled women. Then during the Diet Roosevelt years they stodgily stuck to treasuries and municipal bonds until March of 2000 - when they couldn't take it any more and finally bet heavily on the Internet. When I came across this book, I couldn't help but send it to our designated Mandarin over at the trust department with a peevish note suggesting that he comb it for investment possibilities. He either missed the implicit irony, or detected it and deeply resented it, because scarcely a month later I received a notice indicating that we are now 1/17th owners of a chicken processing plant just outside of Verrettes - a small industrial center in Haiti's Artibonite province. Haitian poultry processors are said to enjoy tremendous efficiencies, since local religious practices create high demand for exotic internal organs that Americans don't buy. For this reason I am hopeful that this story will have a happy ending.
