Book Description
The book covers the earliest Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) settlers in early California. It covers their role in the Bear Flag Revolt, June 14, 1846, which took California from the Mexican Government. This also gave California their "Bear Flag" a modification of which is still used as the state flag today.
It also covers the Ship Brooklyn with Sam Brannan which sailed from New York harbor with 240 Mormon settlers and arrived in Yerba Buena harbor (later San Francisco)to be the first U.S. settlers there under U.S. rule. They started the first school, first newspaper, first bank, etc. It was the longest continuous sea journey of any religious outcasts (24,000 miles and 178 days). There is a large section on the Mormon Battalion which was organized July 16,1846 at the request of the U.S. Government to join the fight in the war with Mexico. They made the longest military march in U.S. history, arriving in San Diego in January 1847. Upon their dischage, they stopped at New Helvetia (later Sacramento) and some were hired to build the Sutter Sawmill in Coloma. It covers their involvement in the discovery of gold there and the California gold rush of 1849 that followed. It covers many of the gold site locations and activities. When the group left the state to join their families, who had by then settled in the Valley of the Great Salt Lake, they blazed the "Mormon Emigrant Trail" which was used 6 months later as the "wagon freeway" to the gold rush. The book covers early Mormon families who settled in the area and covers contributions made to the area by various Mormons during the 150 years. The book also contains a 19" color fold-out copy of the 1846 S.Augustus Mitchell Map of the West, which was used by Brigham Young to bring the LDS pioneers to the west. The book also contains over 300 photos and maps.

Book Description
The foundation for the subject of mathematical finance was laid nearly 100 years ago by Bachelier in his fundamental work, Théorie de la spéculation. In this work, he provided the first treatment of Brownian motion. Since then, the research of Markowitz, and then of Black, Merton, Scholes, and Samuelson brought remarkable and important strides in the field. A few years later, Harrison and Kreps demonstrated the fundamental role of martingales and stochastic analysis in constructing and understanding models for financial markets. The connection opened the door for a flood of mathematical developments and growth.
Concurrently with these mathematical advances, markets have grown, and developments in both academia and industry continue to expand. This lively activity inspired an AMS Short Course at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego (CA).
The present volume includes the written results of that course. Articles are featured by an impressive list of recognized researchers and practitioners. Their contributions present deep results, pose challenging questions, and suggest directions for future research. This collection offers compelling introductory articles on this new, exciting, and rapidly growing field.

Sad that its needed..........2004-04-13
This book would not even be needed if California (also known as...Kalifornia, and PDRK...The Free Peoples Democratic Republic of Kalifornia.) did not have such a hard time with the phrase "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED." I just could never understand the concept of "gun control." Since law-abiding citizens police themselves, and criminals ignore the law, why bother? John Lotts book "More Guns, Less Crime", is a very good read. And it shows the disinginous argument of gun control. Which boils down to people control, not crime control.
Essential reading for anyone contemplating gun ownership in.......1999-09-15
Gun laws are such a mess, even the most conscientious citizen will have trouble figuring out what is legal and what isn't. In addition, the subject is so culturally polarized, it is impossible for those with a strong opinion on the subject to give a clear answer to common questions. Enter this great book. Too bad it's not available for the other 49 states...
Necessary material.......1999-09-01
If you live in California and own a gun, this book is as necessary as a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher in your home.
Practical Guide.......1999-07-25
The author uses common everyday English to explain the web of firearms laws in California. It is complete with examples and court cases that define the current legal condition in the state. This is a very easy book to read and is a must for every gun owner whether you're a firearms expert or considering buying a firearm for self-defense. I bought 10 of these books for friends and family last Christmas.

One to keep with you.......2007-05-17
We love this book. It has helped us sort through all the choices of campgrounds out there. Fun to read and imagine all the places we can go!
You gotta have it!.......2006-11-10
I have owned several editions of this book and have passed the old ones on to family and friends. Just the intro is wonderful for people starting to camp. (Key piece of advise from Tom - Schedule your camping time just like you schedule anything else, otherwise it won't happen.) It's fun to check out nearby campgrounds when you bring the book camping with you. I have enjoyed many nights turning the pages and deciding where to camp next. There are books like this for other states, but the California book is the gold stadard. The book will never be 100% accurate, but that's the nature of the beast. It would be great if this info was on a website with amazon-like feedback and google earth views of the campground, photos and maps -- plus a way to access it all in your car! Until then, this is the best. Get his California Hiking book, too. Thanks for writing them and keeping them up to date, Tom! They have lead to many wonderful, memorable trips and hikes for me, my wife and my camping buddies of various ages over many years.
Our Favorite Series of Campground Guides.......2006-11-01
As indicated by other reviewers, the Foghorn (Moon) series of campground guides is not without flaws. Even so, we know of no directories which do a better job of addressing campground aesthetics than these wonderful guides. In our experience, the look and feel of a campground is often the single greatest factor influencing the quality of a camping experience . . . and the factor totally ignored by nearly all other campground guides.
There are a number of directories which rate facilities, provide directions, tell you how to make reservations and give you an idea of the cost for a night's stay in a specific campground. This series gives similar basic information and then goes beyond that. The Foghorn (Moon)guides actually give you a feel of what it is like to stay in a specific campground - a bit of a narrative description and a "scenic beauty rating" for each campground plus information about nearby recreation opportunities. We like that a lot.
Have we found instances where we liked a campground more or less than the book's author? Of course. Tastes differ and things change over time. Even so, we would rather have an admittedly subjective rating of a campground's intangibles than to have nothing to go on but a recitation of facts and figures.
Are the Foghorn (Moon) Outdoors the only guides we carry? No. But they are ALWAYS the first place we turn when selecting a destination campground.
The Bible of California Camping?.......2006-09-04
Maybe this Foghorn publication, California Camping by Tom Steinstra, is the bible of camping, at least for California, but it probably needs another good scrubbing or at least an editor. I have purchased this book twice, 03 and 05 editions, and a few things changed, e.g., when the listing for Palomar Mtn SP mentioned that Reserve America honored this park as one its Top 200 Family Campgrounds. This was a nice addendum to the last edition. But, in some cases, the editors, more than Steinstra, need to make the rounds, at least at the more popular sites. For example, California Camping mentions that El Capitan SB has one of the "best fishing" sites, but from what we have understood over the last few years is that fishing no longer even takes place in the nearby stream - due mostly to drought. Though, if someone said El Capitan is the best for Dolphin watching that would be entirely accurate. Also, Tillie Creek is rated "9" for scenery, apparently, but all the upper front and near the lake sites were closed this year not to mention there is no "creek running" in the summer. However, this book has proven over and over to be accurate in about 90% plus of its content which is great when you have kids. A couple of suggestions might help if, for example, in addition to the scenery rating, could there just be an overall rating, i.e. 1-10 based on Steinstra's standards or the type of campground? And, could the editors create a means by which campers and readers could report their findings back to the publisher? Could the editors make sure to get an accurate update from park rangers, agencies, and private campsites for any basic changes that might have occurred? Okay, so no matter what I say, California Camping is probably the best camping guide out there, in my opinion. I just would like author, editor, and publisher to make it a bit more current and relevent for the next edition, which, of course,I will most likely purchase.
Comprehensive and personal.......2006-08-26
I can't speak for the person who disagreed with some of the ratings. In my experience, this is an invaluable reference, and the personal descriptions of each campground are extremely helpful. Few references will go the extra mile to provide ratings and personal observations about each site like this one does. It's clear that the author has actually visited most of these sites, which is not always the case. It's a great book, and the anecdotes & camping advice in the introduction are very well-written. This book covers every kind of campsite in California, from hike-in primitive sites to RV parking lots. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Explores the psychological impact of change for employees. Provides managers with strategies necessary for successful transitions.
Customer Reviews:
Best book on change that I have read.......1999-11-20
This book is so wonderful that I have ordered copies for my clients. It is probably most useful to people with some background in Myers Briggs, but even without that information, it is a solidly written, insightful book.
I highlighted so much that I had to have a triage approach -- highlighter, blue stars, and dog-earring!
Innovative use of MBTI information but what's the so what?.......1999-08-18
This book has a really neat idea - use the wagon trail west as a metaphor for the challenges people face in changing organizations. It then discusses how people with different Myers Briggs Types respond in these situations, and how when managing change you should take account of these different preferences. Trouble is that there are no clear implications from the book - I'm not sure what change managers should do differently as a result of the information provided by the authors. Where there are recommendations they are so bland that you could have got there without MBTI. Maybe, this is an example of stretching psychological type beyond where it is useful.

What Every Engineer Should Know About Risk Engineering and M.......2000-07-24
An outstanding book for any field of engineering responsible to deliver projects in on schedule and under budget. Book is filled with examples from all areas that ease comprehension and make the book enjoyable to read. Specifically enjoyed the treatment of risk as more than the classic "potential to do harm", but also includes "opportunities for gain." The chapters on cost and schedule risk management are refreshing, informative and through the use of examples allows the concepts to be easily applied. At times the book can be whimsical, adding to the readers enjoyment. I most strongly recommend this book to engineers who want to sharpen their engineering and project management skills.
