    Book Description

`This is an important text. It brings together critical reflections on the discipline's contribution in terms of theory, practice and pedagogy and as such is equally as insightful and challenging as some of its recent predecessors (eg Brown et al 1996; Brown and Turley 1997; Brown 1998). The book represents a useful point of departure for those setting off on their own critical journeys and, thus, it should be included on the reading lists of all those carrying out masters or doctoral research in marketing' - Journal of Marketing Management

This book provides a challenging and stimulating coverage of a broad range of key issues in contemporary marketing - such as marketing philosophy, marketing ethics, the marketing profession, and marketing teaching and research - through an innovative dialogue among some of the most renowned international scholars in the field .

China has the world's most rapidly changing large economy, and according to Ted Fishman, it is forcing the world to change along with it. "No country has ever before made a better run at climbing every step of economic development all at once," he writes, in China, Inc.: How the Rise of the Next Superpower Challenges America and the World. China is currently the largest maker of toys, clothing, and consumer electronics, and is swiftly moving up the ladder in car production, computer manufacturing, biotechnology, aerospace, telecommunications, and other sectors thanks to low-cost, high-tech factories. China is also where the world is investing. In 2004, for instance, the city of Shanghai alone attracted over $12 billion in direct foreign investment, roughly the same amount as all of Indonesia and Mexico received. In tracing China's ascendancy over the past 30 years (with annual growth of an astonishing 9.5 percent), Fishman presents a flood of facts, figures, forecasts, and anecdotes and examines the implications of this unprecedented growth for China, the U.S., and the rest of the world.

Calling China's huge population "arguably the greatest natural resource on the planet," Fishman details how hundreds of millions of peasants have migrated from rural to urban areas to find manufacturing jobs, providing an unlimited, low-wage workforce to power China's economy. In the process, this shift has changed both Chinese culture and the global business climate in significant ways. Simply put, American companies can't compete with wages as low as 25 cents an hour and lack of regulation and oversight, so are forced to move their operations to China or completely change the focus of their business. And it's not just a problem for the U.S.--even Mexico is outsourcing to China. Though it remains to be seen whether this will truly be the "Chinese Century" as Fishman asserts, China, Inc. is a brisk and informative look at why so many American corporations, and American jobs, are heading to China. --Shawn Carkonen

    Book Description

China today is visible everywhere -- in the news, in the economic pressures battering the globe, in our workplaces, and in every trip to the store. Provocative, timely, and essential -- and updated with new statistics and information -- this dramatic account of China's growing dominance as an industrial superpower by journalist Ted C. Fishman explains how the profound shift in the world economic order has occurred -- and why it already affects us all.

How has an enormous country once hobbled by poverty and Communist ideology come to be the supercharged center of global capitalism? What does it mean that China now grows three times faster than the United States? Why do nearly all of the world's biggest companies have large operations in China? What does the corporate march into China mean for workers left behind in America, Europe, and the rest of the world?

Meanwhile, what makes China's emerging corporations so dangerously competitive? What will happen when China manufactures nearly everything -- computers, cars, jumbo jets, and pharmaceuticals -- that the United States and Europe can, at perhaps half the cost? How do these developments reach around the world and straight into all of our lives?

These are ground-shaking questions, and China, Inc. provides answers.

Veteran journalist Ted C. Fishman shows how China will force all of us to make big changes in how we think about ourselves as consumers, workers, citizens, and even as parents. The result is a richly engaging work of penetrating, up-to-the-minute reportage and brilliant analysis that will forever change how readers think about America's future.

How do these developments reach around the world and straight into the lives of all Americans? These are ground-shaking questions, and China, Inc. provides answers.Veteran journalist and former commodities trader Ted C. Fishman paints a vivid picture of the megatrends radiating out of China. Fishman's account begins with the burgeoning output of China's vast low-cost factories and the swelling appetite of its 1.3 billion consumers, both of which are being driven by historically unprecedented infusions of foreign capital and technological know-how. Traveling through China's frenetic landscape of growth, Fishman visits the factories, markets, streets, stores, towns, and cities where the story of Chinese capitalism is being lived by one-fifth of all humanity. Fishman also draws on interviews with Chinese, American, and European workers, managers, and executives to show how China will force all of us to make big changes in how we think about ourselves as consumers, workers, citizens, and even as parents. The result is a richly engaging work of penetrating, up-to-the-minute reportage and brilliant analysis that will forever change how readers think about America's future. "

2 out of 5 stars Lacks critical analysis, nothing more than a collection of (incomplete) stories .......2007-09-04

Half of the book is like a PR campaign for Shanghai, saying how fascinating the city is without really critically examining its glories. It seems like the author has not ventured far away from Shanghai (even Zhejiang Province is bordering Shanghai) and to really delve into the rest of China. It is just like reading a book on U.S. economy while all it talks about is New York. Projecting New York for the rest of the U.S. is laughable, so is thinking Shanghai epitomizes the entire China.

Shanghai's success, at least in the past, critically relied on the extremely favorable national policies steered by Jiang Ze-ming, the former mayor of Shanghai who became the president after 1989 Tiananmen. Such biased national policies are highly questionable, and its impact on Shanghai long-term economic sustainability is also open for debate.

It's also weird for a book on China's economic transition to exclude meaningful discussion of the economic reforms in the Pearl River Delta area where all of the initial economic reforms started, and which is still one of the most important economic regions in China. Also, China's attempts to balance economic development between the coastal region and the inland region are largely ignored in the book (except some very light discussions here and there).

The second half of the book is not very organized and it is not clear what message the author was trying to get across. Overall, the book is nothing more than a collection of stories you can easily find in Economist. A better book for a quick intro and analysis of China's rise is The World is Flat, side by side is an analysis of India as a bonus...

3 out of 5 stars Could have been at least 100 pages shorter.......2007-07-15

A lot of insights from the book but at the same time a lot of non-insights.

The book covers the movement of Chinese people from the farms to the cities and the attitude towards rapid modernization including piracy. However, you cannot FEEL it from first person point of view. You feel very detached reading the book.

It could have been more straight to the point and a lot of pages bored me.

    So with all due respect:

    1) If China is so bad, don't do business there, no one is forcing you
    2) All American CEO who deals with China are unpatriotic Americans
    3) All American CEO who outsource to China and India are immoral capitalist
    4) All American CEO who deal with China should pay a fine or go to Jail. -But they are not! And as matter of facts, they are getting big bonuses.
    5) Don't blame the Chinese, they are providing a service (cheap) but American consumers and executives are the ones knocking on their doors.
    6) You can't have both ways; you can't try to use cheap labor in 3rd world countries and then turn around and point fingers at the people you are doing business with.

    7) Stop bringing up the WWII theory on some of these comments, just because the USA fought and won WWI -which is GREAT! It does not mean the USA is correct FOREVER...common sense.

        Book Description

Japan has led the world in urban innovation, design and planning, successfully combining high population with functionality, cleanliness and low levels of crime.

The Japanese Urban Environment sets out to explain the reasons for this success, showing how both natural and human-made factors influence urban life. Interdisciplinary, comprehensive and up-to-date, this major new book shows how the physical cityscape of climate, buildings and infrastructure interacts with social and cultural factors to produce a unique environment.

Divided into four parts, the volume addresses

        • the social, cultural and physical determinants of the Japanese urban environment, showing how cultural values have influenced the historical evolution of cities

        • the climate, energy use and leisure provision in the city from an environmental perspective

        • the infrastructure of the Japanese city and its growth since the Second World War, illustrating how technical 'hardware', such as the subway systems, operates effectively because of the social, economic and cultural 'software'.

        • the future of urban design in Japan, indicating the impact of national and local planning, the uses of advanced technology and methods for urban redevelopment

With contributions by a wide range of Japanese specialists, this work addresses the full complexity of the urban environment. The authors show how a dynamic synthesis of traditional Eastern socio-cultural influences with Western building and engineering techniques led to the modern Japanese city.

Edited with extensive introductions to each section by Gideon Golany, the Japanese Urban Environment makes existing Japanese scholarship available to a wider audience. Scholars and policy makers will discover remarkable insights into successful urban design which can be applied to the cities across the industrialised and newly industrialising world.

        Book Description

Unlike the serene Buddhist gardens and Meiji-era temples of old world Japan, the country's modern architecture and urban planning on first look, appear monotonously gray or aggressively gaudy. This book shows how an appreciation of Japan's cities is often at odds with Western thought and culture.

Learning from the Japanese City explores how Westerners tend to think of the city as a network of linear spaces, such as formed streets, while the Japanese see it as more of a patchwork of areas. Barrie Shelton suggests that this contrast in urban planning extend to other areas of cultural expression, including, most fundamentally, the written language. The book shows how an embrace of fracture, transformation and non-linear qualities, that appear chaotic, emerge as a potential source of learning and inspiration for Western architects and planners.

5 out of 5 stars the book is expensive, but its worth it.......2006-01-28

The book is fantastic, the writing insightful about a subject on which it is hard to get information on in English. It is one person's perspective, and a foreigner one at that, but I liked what he had to say, and I don't think its uninformed.

As a well travelled architect and planner with experience in Asia, I recommend it highly...

1 out of 5 stars Very little to be learned here........2004-02-22

This is the only time I have ever written a review for Amazon.com, and I freely admit it is out of annoyance at the high price I paid for this book. Shelton has very little to say, and he says it badly. His "research" seems to have been no more than anecdotes from his own observations during wanderings of Japanese cities, and skimming through books by other people who did real research. There is almost no analysis of the reasons for Japanese urban form, and no convincing explanation of what may be "learned". Examples: he notes the strange juxtapositions and visual incoherence, but gives no information about the zoning and subdivision laws that allow this. He notes that many small buildings have exterior staircases as their street facade, but does not research the fire code laws that encourage this. Above all, he seems to assume that the ostensibly random results must be the result of random processes, and so ignores the importance of big business interests, and especially private railway companies, in the shaping of Japanese cities.

The photos are poorly reproduced and the diagrams (Shelton's own?) are laughably crude. He seems to consider every Japanese city to be generically interchangeable, and he caricatures Western architecture and urban traditions perhaps more than those of Japan.

If this is not intended as academic research but as quirky anecdotes/opinions along the lines of Alex Kerr or Peter Popham, fine, but in that case Shelton's awkward prose is not worth the effort to read.

In short, the only valuable information that Shelton provides is quoted or from sources that include: Ashihara's "The Hidden Order", Barthes "Empire of Signs", Jinnai's "Tokyo: a Spatial Anthropology", various texts by Bognar, and Popham's "Tokyo: the City at the End of the World". All of these books are highly recommended, along with Sorensen's "The Making of Urban Japan" and Atelier Bow Wow's "Made in Tokyo Guidebook". I promise I am not the author of any of the books I am praising (although I wonder if the same could be said about the other review on this page). This is definitely a low point in Routledge's usually high quality output. Don't waste your money.

          Book Description

Over the last fifteen years local citizens' movements have spread rapidly throughout Japan. Created with the aim of improving the quality of the local environment, and of environmental management processes, such activities are widely referred to as machizukuri, and represent an important development in local politics and urban management in Japan.

This volume examines the growth and nature of such civil society participation in local urban and environmental governance, raising important questions about the changing roles of and relations between central and local government, and between citizens and the state, in managing shared spaces. The machizukuri processes studied here can be seen as the focus of an important emerging trend toward increased civic participation in managing processes of urban change in Japan. The contributors provide a comprehensive overview of the machizukuri phenomenon through examination not only of theory and history, but also of case studies illustrating real changes in the institutions of place making and neighbourhood governance.

Living Cities in Japan will be of particular value to readers interested in social, urban, geographical and environmental studies.

            Description:
There has been much discussion about the importance of nature conservation, but a concrete strategy has been lacking. Most conservation measures are reactive to development projects that threaten the sites' conservation values. There is little synergy between nature conservation and other competing land-use policies. Furthermore, conservation messages are not communicated well because there are few opportunities for those involved in research, policy formation and policy implementation to interact. We illustrate the methodological framework that can be used to address these issues in rural nature conservation by presenting our research conducted in the Arai-Keinan district of Niigata, Japan. The proposed methodological framework consists of integrating visual and biological landscape approaches to understand the area's natural environment and using participatory research to narrow the communication gaps among those involved. We stress the importance of expressing the research results and recommendations on a map as a strategy for effective nature conservation. The graphical presentation of a map not only allows for clearer delivery of messages from researchers to government officials and residents, but also facilitates coordination among competing land-use policies. The map is the central ammunition in reversing the reactive nature of conservation policies to that of a ''preemptive'' nature. Future research directions to gain stronger political support are also discussed.

This could have been a great reference - But almost all of the data is from 1997 or before. The discussion on relations with Russia ends in 1995, with no mention of the unification pacts. The only current information are texts of addresses given by the President.
