Book Description

From the world's foremost authority on chart analysis-- a practical new treatise on mastering powerful trading tools and systems

In the sequel to his best-selling book, The New Science of Technical Analysis, Tom DeMark refines the most popular and precise of his indicators with exacting new attention to real-time trading applications. For the first time, DeMark shares his powerful new indicator, TD Combo, which when combined with the highly popular Sequential Combination is a powerful new tool for understanding market rhythm and calculating price points.

THOMAS DeMARK (Phoenix, Arizona) and his technical indicators have been a major force at some of the largest and most successful trading operations in the world, including his own firm, Devan Capital.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars tour de force of technical d'avant garde.......2007-10-23

After reading this book, I understood wholeheartly why so many institutional traders employ Demark's ideas and concepts in their operations. As you know, they are no dummies when it comes to markets. They breathe, eat, and sleep with markets on daily basis. And they use the most ruthless weapons in their arsenals. Tom Demark's tools are exactly just that, sharp cold steely market weapons. Needless to say, I learned a lot from this book. In fact, more so than his previous book.

4 out of 5 stars Professional / amateur divide.......2007-08-08

This is the first time I've commented on a book here on Amazon before reading it.

What strikes me is that the reviews can be broken up into two camps:
- trading professionals working in the industry, who have the indicators already programmed on their terminals, and who have the incentive to use them
- trading amateurs, either complaining about the poor structure, layout or grammer used in the book, or who don't have the means or the ability to program the indicators for themselves.

With this in mind I ordered the book, figuring that I would much rather trade on the same side as the professionals. I gave it four stars so as not to unduly influence the book's current rating.

5 out of 5 stars The methodology in this book made me a professional.......2007-06-04

I took the leap to professional trader after I seriously studied Tom DeMark and the methodologies in this book. My analysis, trading and most importantly, my money making, went to another level. There is a reason that SAC, Paul Tudor Jones and others have relied on Tom DeMark over the years. Retail traders are mostly unaware of these indicators but hedge fund professionals on trading desks all over the world know the name DeMark.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, Useful and Worth Keeping Near Your Terminal.......2007-03-08

Mr. DeMark has put together a practical collection of indicators which investors -- of all time frames -- can use to enhance their profitability.

This book also complements his video series where some of the indicators in this book are described.

Like most technical analysis books, the material presented shares its roots with methods described in many earlier works. However, learning Mr. DeMark's implementation of them will add another dimension to your understanding of technical analysis (on macro and micro levels), and will also improve your bottom line.

1 out of 5 stars Completely Dessapointed.......2006-11-02

The first book of DeMark was good but this one is not a book, is like some manual for some software. All indicators are copyrighted, so you have to use one of the charting software indicated and even doing that you don't have access to the code.

You can't write your own for the software are you using or modify some because there is no formulas explained.

Is like to buy a car and you can't see inside the engine, touch them, stripping, etc. You only can drive.

It's shame, a complete waste of time and money.

At the begging he mention Larry Williams. I suppose if Larry
it had kept the Williams %R formula in the secret he would be one of the most popular traders known.

The dumb trader: pays for a profits promise when buying something, and indicator, an expert, a system.
The smart trader says: before pay, show me the profits an then we see.

Book Description

An Introduction to Technical Analysis from One of the Top Names in the Business

"Essential Technical Analysis is a highly valued resource for technical traders. The importance of comprehensive and well-researched market behaviors, indicators, and systems were well expressed graphically with many examples. No technical analyst should be without this book. Stevens's book could become another classic."
-Suri Duddella, President of siXer.cOm, inc. (Forbes magazine's "Best of the Web" in Technical Analysis Category)

"Essential Technical Analysis will give the new student of technical analysis a good overview of both classical chart patterns and a myriad of technical indicators, but so will many other texts. What sets this volume apart is that it presents the subject in the context of real-world trading situations, not idealized well-chosen examples. Books on technical analysis, especially those aimed at novices, are typically filled with charts in which the selected patterns are both unambiguous and work perfectly. As Leigh Stevens recognizes and confronts, however, the real world is a far more sloppy place: charts may often contain conflicting indicators, and patterns don't always work as described. Reading Essential Technical Analysis is like sitting beside a veteran technical analyst and having him describe his methods and market experiences."
-Jack Schwager, author of Market Wizards, Stock Market Wizards, and Schwager on Futures

"Leigh Stevens's depth of experience, acquired over many years, has generated a deep understanding of, and commitment to, the discipline of technical analysis. He is also one of those rare individuals who have both the ability to convey the essence of his ideas in a wonderfully simple and straightforward way and through the use of personal anecdotes and experiences. There are not many people around who can both walk the walk and talk the talk."
-Tony Plummer, author of Forecasting Financial Markets, Director of Rhombus Research Ltd., and former Director of Hambros Bank Ltd. and Hambros Investment Management PLC

"Leigh Stevens brings his considerable years of experience to this project. He has crafted a real-world book on technical analysis that gives you the benefit of his trials and errors as well as 120 years of observations and market wisdom from Charles Dow to the latest indicators and approaches. Investors who suffered from the bursting of the technology bubble in 1999 and 2000 should read Essential Technical Analysis from cover to cover and learn to apply the lessons to the next market cycle."
-Bruce M. Kamich, CMT, past President of the Market Technicians Association and Adjunct Professor of Finance at Rutgers University and Baruch College

1 out of 5 stars I want my money back!.......2007-09-13

I expected a little more than this... This book doesnt contain anything concrete, as if the author deliberately omit everything that is of real importance. Just look at the part about MACD. Way too vague, I get better insight on MACD by googling it out myself. If you seriously looking for a solid book about technical analysis, look else where! There are better ways to throw away money.

4 out of 5 stars A Technical approach to stock trading........2006-03-17

This book is well written. Each chapter has an introduction and summary at the end of chapter.
Its not a book for someone just starting out trading. The first seventy pages is mainly an introduction to the Technicals. Its an introduction to Chart pattern, Pattern recognition,Trendlines,Moving averages, etc.. followed along with annotation on each charts identifying certain patterns.
Some good information in this book which is sort of condensed from other Technical Analysis books into one book.
Its the stuff you need to know!

1 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere.......2005-02-24

I unfortunately purchased this book on the strength of the review in the MTA newsletter Technically Speaking. I found absolutely nothing of value, and nothing to indicate to me that the author was qualified to comment on the subject. The quality of the printing leaves much to be desired, almost as though Wiley did this one "on the cheap". If you've bought it, give your copy to someone you hate, and it will at least accomplish something.

3 out of 5 stars A very slow read.......2004-04-08

As a relative newcomer to technical analysis techniques, I found this book hard to digest. The charts are hard to read, the examples are not always clear, and the author doesn't relate the knowledge to actual trades.

I have learned from the book but I would not recommend it for first time students of technical analysis. Also, the book contains many annoying errors and typos, especially in the first half. Leigh should fire his editor....I don't think they read this book.

3 out of 5 stars Could be great for some..........2003-12-26

This book is unfortunately 'yet another' beginner TA book.

A couple of problems for more experienced practitioners:

- I noticed quite a few 'errors' in the book. Some are definitional issues, some are typos and some are just very poor examples (eg of charts).

- The feel I get from the book is that the author is not a very accomplished practitioner himself. Some issues that would be experienced by those who have been trading were not discussed. Eg false breaks were discussed, but were not compared with 'successful' patterns/breaks which exhibited similar circumstances (ie how to distinguish or set a strategy for potential false breaks).

- Quite a verbose writing style? I prefer more succint texts...

- I can't really say I learnt anything.

However, here's the positive side of things:

- Pretty comprehensive of basic concepts, with some useful and important concepts for beginners. Although I would suspect whether beginners would actually pick up on this. Eg comments on volume / cycles are worthy to note!

- Quite an easy read.

- Great additional commentary and 'integration' with psychology/experience that most beginning TA books do not have. Eg author constantly quotes appropriate gems from other books/top traders.

Overall, I think this is a good beginner book but experienced traders would not find much value in the book (especially the time spent on reading it!!).

    Book Description

Sales forecasting and market analysis are the cornerstones of the planning process. Yet, these two tasks are usually performed by people with only limited training in either area because most firms do not have full-time forecasters/market analysts. The authors acknowledge this situation and attempt to describe the key techniques for forecasting sales and analyzing markets in a format that meets the needs of an audience with limited quantitative skills. In addition to its "basic" approach, another strength of this book is that it combines the coverage of two key activities--forecasting and market analysis--that are performed by the same person in most middle-sized (and smaller) firms. The book's contents and format were designed with two audiences in mind: persons assigned to develop forecasts and market analyses, but who are not specialists in either area, and persons who will be incorporating these results in their planning and decision making. The major portion of the book is devoted to the three basic categories of forecasting models--time series, causal, and judgmental--emphasizing the most widely used models in each category. Special attention is also given to the sources for obtaining the data needed to make forecasts and analyze markets. The latter part of the book describes procedures for developing market and sales potentials, methods for segmenting markets, and some analytic techniques such as conjoint analysis and cluster analysis, gaining increased usage among market analysts.

      Book Description

A highly readable, logically presented, unique guide to asset allocation strategies and technical analysis, this work covers numerous investment alternatives including mutual funds and fixed income securities. Aby and Vaughn provide a comprehensive examination of point and figure charting and vertical bar analysis, combined with an approach that both improves timing and emphasizes the minimization of errors in data interpretation and investment decision making. The authors discuss ways to estimate price targets and provide unique forecasting methods for fixed-income and aggregate equity markets, using an intermarket perspective. This is an important and useful resource for professionals and other knowledgeable investors. Throughout the book, Aby and Vaughn challenge conventional and acceptable academic thinking. Through emphasis on smaller, more obscure capitalization issues, they reduce complex concepts to a highly readable framework pervaded by comprehensive coverages of a large number of investment options. Major topics featured include the illustration and application of critical concepts underlying vertical bar chart analysis; extensive coverage on contemporary strategies that improve timing and challenge past criticisms of point and figure charting; a unique approach utilizing the point and figure charts to reveal how mutual fund selection can be improved; and intermarket technical analysis, a method through which movements in bond prices and yields are predicted.

Buchan tackles a tough topic with skill and expertise in this highly informative work. His analysis of the "Nursing LAbour Market" is accurate down to the last detail, and some of his statements, whilst at times contriversial, enlightens the reader and gets accross the important message that runs throughout this book. An excellant analysis, marred only by the poor conclusions and weak opinions.

A Case for Aid: Building a Consensus for Development Assistance discusses the key issues at debate over aid to the world's poorest countries. It includes readings related to the United Nations International Conference on Financing for Development, held in Monterrey, Mexico, in March 2002. The book addresses:

              · Why aid is more effective today at reducing poverty than ever before
              · How aid has helped to support reforms in poor countries
              · Why aid alone is not enough - the impact of trade barriers on development
              · The road forward in light of the Monterrey Consensus.

A Case for Aid brings together:

A Partnership for Development and Peace, a keynote speech given by World Bank president James D. Wolfensohn two weeks before the Monterrey event.

Making the Case for Aid, by the World Bank's chief economist, Nicholas Stern, which discusses the consensus that emerged from Monterrey, including the broad international commitment to reach the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. The Role and Effectiveness of Development Assistance, a report that was presented at the Monterrey conference, detailing lessons from the World Bank's experience. The authors are Ian Goldin, Halsey Rogers, and Nicholas Stern.

The Monterrey Consensus, the official United Nations document outlining the major agreements reached at the conference.

4 out of 5 stars Well-Informed and Hopeful View of International Development.......2003-06-13

This book by the World Bank indicates how dramatic and lasting the progress against global poverty has been in the past 50 years. It also shows how dramatically the Bank's own understanding has risen, even in the past decade, of how to make its efforts more effective in relieving poverty and achieving other development goals. These two themes form the basis for the World Bank's visionary thesis: that eradicating much of the poverty, ill health, and illiteracy around the world is within reach.

The World Bank is full of optimism. Then again, it shows good reason for this outlook. It outlines the substantial advances that have been made over the past few decades in poverty reduction and advances in health and education in the developing world, identifying the World Bank's role in these advances, as one component of a complex, cooperative effort. For instance, the Bank indicates that:
              * Over the past 40 years, life expectancy at birth in developing countries has increased by 20 years - about as much as was achieved in all of human history prior to the middle of the 20th century.
              * Over the past 30 years, illiteracy in the developing world has been cut nearly in half, from 47 percent to 25 percent in adults.
              * Over the past 20 years, the absolute number of people living on less than $1 a day, after rising steadily for the last 200 years, has for the first time begun to fall, even as the world's population has grown by 1.6 billion people.

The book's main message is that foreign development aid is reaching a level of sophistication that translates into dramatic improvements in the human condition like never before. This aid is lifting people out of poverty, improving their health and education, and contributing to the stability and security of the entire world. As the book says, "Aid is not simply a transfer payment for the consumption of poor people, but an investment in improved policies and institutions. The best aid finances the costs of change, rather than the costs of not changing."

The Bank's vision is grand and inspiring. This is far more than a financial treatise; it is instead a bold blueprint for raising the human condition throughout the globe. With such reach, it touches on much of the agenda for foreign affairs, and makes for compelling reading for anyone concerned with international relations. As the Bank aspires, "we must make globalization stand for common humanity, not for commercial brands or competitive advantage."
