Realistic Evaluation
Ray Pawson , and Nick Tilley Manufacturer: Sage Publications Ltd ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0761950095 |
Book Description
Authors Ray Pawson and Nick Tilley show how program evaluation needs to be and can be bettered. The authors present a profound and highly readable critique of current evaluation practice introducing a manifesto- and handbook-fresh approach. This volume is devoted to articulating a new evaluation paradigm, which promises greater validity and utility for evaluation as a whole. Realistic Evaluation reflects the paradigmÆs foundation in scientific realist philosophy and its commitment to the idea that programs deal with real problems rather than mere social constructions. Its primary intention is to inform realistic developments in policyùmaking that benefit program participants and the public. Pawson and Tilley argue persuasively and passionately that scientific evaluation requires a careful blend of theory and method, quality and quantity, ambition and realism. The book offers a complete blueprint for evaluation activities, covering design to data collection and analysis to the accumulation of findings across programs and onto the realization of research into policy. Practical examples are used throughout this powerful volume and are grounded in the major fields of program evaluation. Realistic Evaluation is essential reading for all those involved in the evaluation process, especially researchers, scholars, and students in sociology, social policy, criminology, health, and education.

Performance Evaluation and Benchmarking with Realistic Applications
Manufacturer: The MIT Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0262050668 |
Book Description
Performance evaluation and benchmarking are of concern to all computer-related disciplines. A benchmark is a standard program or set of programs that can be run on different computers to give an accurate measure of their performance. This book covers a variety of aspects of computer performance evaluation, with a focus on Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) benchmarks. SPEC is a nonprofit organization whose members represent industry, academia, and other organizations. The book discusses rationales for creating and updating benchmarks, the use of benchmarks in academic research, benchmarking methodologies, the relation of SPEC benchmarks to other benchmarking activities, shortcomings of current benchmarks, and the need for further benchmarking efforts.Customer Reviews:
Highly academic with excellent theoretical insights.......2001-09-15
Chapter 1 is an overview of the book, discusses related work and provides brief insights on performance evaluations in the real world. Chapter 2 introduces SPEC and current issues, and moves into a second paper on performance evaluation of large-scale systems. The most theoretical chapter, 3, devotes two papers to SPEC benchmarks in the research environment.
To give an indication of how esoteric this chapter is, one of the papers is titled "The Allocation Behavior of the SPECjvm98 Java Benchmarks". This is the stuff of pure research; however, the discussion yields conclusions that can be used by development companies, particularly in the quality and architecture domains. Chapter 4 stands out as the most practical for real world applicability. It covers tools and methodologies for benchmarking and performance evaluation, with one paper devoted to a framework that can be applied to parallel applications, and the second paper in the chapter addressing performance coupling through case studies for measuring interactions of kernals. Large development organizations will find much useful information here. The final two chapters are a blend of theoretical and practical, with chapter 5 addressing related benchmarking efforts and chapter 6 devoted to needs for new benchmarks.
The material is well researched; reading through it is somewhat ponderous. However, if you are involved in the creation of performance benchmarks, regardless of whether you intend to use SPEC or related models, this book will prove valuable. If you are seeking information on performance benchmarking in an operational environment this book may be too theoretical. As someone who is on the operational side, but with an interest in theoretical and academic works I found this book to be interesting, but not particularly useful. On the other hand, there is much in this book that *can* be directly applied by those who design, develop or verify and validate benchmarks. Moreover, this book represents the some of the latest research findings and thoughts (as I write this in Sep 2001) in this highly specialized field, making it invaluable to the right audience.

Nanotechnology: A Realistic Market Evaluation
Business Communications Co. Manufacturer: Business Communications Co. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Digital ASIN: B0009WDX6C |
Book Description
The promise of nanotechnology has created lofty expectations in some quarters. The U.S. National Science Foundation is on record as predicting that the market for nanotechnology, or products containing nanotechnology, will reach $1 trillion in 10 to 15 years.
Along with high expectations, nanotechnology also evokes fear in some people. Bill Joy, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, published an article in 2000 in which he called nanotechnology (along with biotechnology and robotics) a "Faustian bargain" and a "Pandora's box," and he called on mankind to relinquish all three technologies. In 2002, Michael Crichton's novel Prey, a fictional treatment of the dangers of nanotechnology, made the New York Times' best seller list.
Tellingly, both Joy and Crichton were especially preoccupied with self-replicating nanobots called "molecular assemblers," a development that is probably decades away, if it is in fact feasible at all. Both advocates and opponents of nanotechnology tend to lose sight of the fact that progress in developing commercial nanotechnology applications has been slow.
Nanotechnology for the most part remains a set of solutions in search of a problem. In addition to critics and novelists, this uncertainty about the future of nanotechnology creates difficulties for investors who sometimes have difficulty separating reality from hype. This report takes a hard look at the nanotechnology field, and tries to provide a road map to the technologies and applications that are most likely to be commercialized in the next 5 years.
STUDY BACKGROUND
While it appears inevitable that nanotechnology will have a broad and fundamental impact on many sectors of the U.S. economy, various technical, marketing, and other hurdles need to be overcome before nanotechnology fulfills this promise. These challenges and differences of opinion regarding their commercial implications are reflected in the wide divergence among existing estimates of the U.S. and global nanotechnology markets.
Global estimates for 2004 to 2005 range from $8 billion to $68 billion. As mentioned earlier, the U.S. National Science Foundation has predicted that the global market for nanotechnologies will reach $1 trillion or more within 20 years. Other analysts downplay the commercial dimensions of the nanotechnology market, focusing instead on the supply side - that is, the development of new nanoscale technologies and applications. These analysts have made valuable contributions, raising investors' awareness of and interest in nanotechnologies. However, by itself, their work does not provide sufficient information in order to guide corporate or individual investment decisions. Investors require additional data, such as the size of specific nanotechnology markets, prices, and competition, as well as potential regulation.
STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The goal of this report is to provide investors and others with information on the commercial potential of various nanotechnologies, and to complement the growing body of technical information. Specific objectives include identifying segments of the nanotechnology market with the greatest commercial potential in the near to mid-term (2003 to 2008), projecting future demand in these segments, and evaluating the challenges that must be overcome for each segment to realize its potential in order to estimate the probability of successful commercialization.
INTENDED AUDIENCE
The report is especially intended for entrepreneurs, investors, venture capitalists, and other readers with a need to know where the nanotechnology market is headed in the next 5 years. Other readers who should find the report particularly valuable include nanotechnology marketing executives and government officials associated with the National Nanotechnology Initiative and other state-level programs to promote the development of the nanotechnology industry. The report's findings and conclusions should also be of interest to the broader nanotechnology community.
SCOPE AND FORMAT
The global market for nanotechnology applications will be addressed. Nanotechnology applications are defined comprehensively as the creation and utilization of materials, devices, and systems through the manipulation of matter at scales of less than 100 nanometers. Based on this definition, the scope of the study includes a number of long-established nanotechnology applications (e.g., photographic emulsions and carbon black), as well as cutting-edge applications that are still in the early launch phase or still under development. The study covers nanomaterials (nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanostructured materials, and nanocomposites), nanotools (nanolithography tools and scanning probe microscopes), and nanodevices (nanosensors and nanoelectronics). The study format includes the following major elements:
METHODOLOGY AND INFORMATION SOURCES
Projecting the market for emerging technologies, such as most nanotechnology applications whose commercial potential has not yet been proven, is a challenging task, which may help to explain why most analysts so far have focused on supply-side technology assessments. This report uses a multiphase approach to identify the nanotechnology applications with the greatest commercial potential and quantify the market for these applications, as described below.
In the first phase of the analysis, we identify a 'long list' of potential nanotechnology applications (including applications that are still under development) and map them against potential end-user industries, such as information technology/electronics, biotechnology, and health care. In the second phase, we eliminate those nanotechnology applications that appear to have little likelihood of making it into commercial production in the next 5 years. This is accomplished through a literature review and interviews with industry sources. The result of phase two was is a 'short list' of applications and end-user industries with the greatest near- to mid-term commercial potential.
The third phase is focused on quantifying the potential broader market for each short-listed nanotechnology application and identifying the main prerequisites for commercial success. Various methodologies and data sources were used to develop the projections, including trend-line projections, input-output analysis, and estimates of future demand from industry sources.

Realistic Evaluation of Terrain by Intelligent Natural Agents (RETINA)
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423500288 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled and assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A045814. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: US Army and Joint constructive simulations require human operators to observe the exercise in progress, conduct analysis of the results, and provide a realistic reports and assessment of the action presented on their screens to the desired training audience. Current software tools provide excellent mathematical assessments (such as center of mass calculations, optimal routes, and sensor ranges) but poor human-like assessment of data (most likely route, probable enemy intention, etc.). This Thesis presents an artificial intelligence architecture specifically designed to reduce that manpower requirement by describing a concept for computer modeling that can produce realistic human-like assessment results. Specific concepts described are approaches for conducting a digital terrain assessment, development of avenues of approach, deployment of templated forces to a specific piece of terrain, and then a method of adjusting the templated force to react to actual sightings and known information. Also included are more detailed discussions and implementation details for use of gas diffusion as a method of analyzing avenues of approach through digital terrain. This approach seems quite promising as a method of modeling human movement tendencies and appears superior to classic path finding or optimal route selection methods.
