How to Think Like An Economist
ASIN: 1587991829 |
Book Description
A refreshing look at economics with topics ranging from sex, drugs, arms and music to energy, movies and farming, the Internet and Aids, Diane Coyle plunges herself and the reader into some of the world's most contentious political and social issues. Diane Coyle shows how economic principles apply to headline issues in an entertaining, humane and highly intelligent way. Harvard-educated Coyle is an economist and award-winning writer specializing in business, technology and global economics.
Customer Reviews:
serviceable.......2006-10-21
This is a very solid, serviceable, non-technical introduction to some of the more popular principles of macro- and microeconomics, designed for the general reader. There are no graphs, and no math required.
The subject matter is frequently surprising and Coyle's writing style is engaging.
Each chapter tackles a different subject: infrasructure, inflation, defense spending, etc., and throughout each chapter, critical terms such as "liquidity trap," "rational expecatations," "human capital," etc. are boldfaced and defined in the back of the book.
Meaning that, despite is salacious title, the book would serve nicely as ancillary reading for a basic survey class on economics -- something to breathe a little life into those charts and graphs.
I should warn you about two things:
1. The title is misleading, at best. Presumably this was a directive on the part of the publisher, in a bid to sell more copies? The title seems to promise all sorts of lurid delights inside, but such aren't really delivered on. The closest you come is chapter 1, which analyzes the economic motives behind the prostitution industry, and chapter 2, which does likewise for the illegal drug trade. The overwhelming remainder of the book is quite mainstream and non-controversial.
2. The woman writing this is British, so most of her examples (about monopolies, laws, failed companies, etc.) come from United Kingdom examples that North American readers might not be familiar with.
Good book for the rest of us.......2006-07-09
Coyle's book offers a realistic look of how econ works. It's a great read to see how many of the popular government programs are in fact pork barrelling and not, in fact, in the best interest of society. I find the info contained in the novel useful and valid and the utilization of common themes (i.e. farm subsidies, national defence, sports teams, etc) help the reader understand.
exactly what it claims to be.......2005-10-21
While it isn't the most fascinating book I've ever read, this lives up to its title. It is an unusual, but very effective, introduction to basic economic concepts for people who would rather die than crack open an economics textbook. The choice of real-world examples and the generally humorous tone make the learning painless. I skimmed the glossary before I started and was intimidated by the quantity and complexity of some of the terms that were used, but by the time I had finished reading the book and took another look at the glossary, I found I was comfortable with the terms and concepts. Highly recommended.
Entertaining introduction to Economics.......2005-10-09
I am enjoying this book as part of a class at college and it makes Economics fun and interesting through real world examples that grab one's attention.
The first step to make decisions.......2005-08-08
Why we make decisions? Because we have limited resources! If you want to understand everything that happened or will happen, read this book.

Book Description
There is synergy between the diverse methodologies of Operations Research and Management Science, and the many problems it seeks to solve. Operation Research/Management Science at Work is an example of that synergy. The principal aim of this book is to examine selected recent research in and applications of Operational Research/Management Science. The focus is on research that is of industry interest and covers a wide range of topics from major fields of OR/MS in a systematic and coherent fashion. Each application is chosen to demonstrate the elegance of their implementations. The book meets the needs of applied researchers who are interested in applications of OR/MS algorithms. Moreover, real world problems together with their solutions and implementations are the applications that have been selected for the volume. The Asia Pacific region has embraced business applications of decision support systems in recent years. Many of these applications have the state of the art OR/MS techniques in this region embedded in them. Hence, the increased use of OR/MS techniques in this region provides opportunities for identifying methodological advances that are taking place as a result of the unique nature of the applications. These also provide opportunities for exploring synergies and interfaces that exist between OR/MS, both in terms of applications and theoretical advances.

Book Description
The goal of the
Encyclopedia of Operations Research and Management
Science is to provide decision makers and problem solvers in business, industry, government and academia with a comprehensive overview of the wide range of ideas, methodologies, and synergistic forces that combine to form the pre-eminent decision-aiding fields of operations research and management science (OR/MS). The Second Edition is a further extension of this goal - which through addressing and solving a wide range of problems - OR/MS methodologies continue to flourish and grow. This is a field that is used extensively throughout the applied sciences, and, because of this, the new edition has added topics in the following areas:
- Analytic Network Process;
- Call Centers;
- Certainty Equivalence;
- Comb. Optimization by Simulated CE;
- Computational Organization;
- Constraint Programming;
- Data Mining;
- Degeneracy Graphs;
- Economic Order Q Extensions;
- Educational Issues in B-Schools;
- Electronic Commerce;
- Financial Markets;
- Global Climate Change;
- Hidden Markov Models;
- History of Early British OR;
- Implementation for Public Sector;
- Info Tech Benefits;
- Interactive Multi-Objective Math. Programming;
- Knapsacks with Nonlinearities;
- Little's Law in Distribution Form;
- Military Ops Other than War;
- Multivariate Quality Control;
- Perturbation Analysis;
- Simulation Metamodeling;
- Simulation Optimization;
- Supply Chain Management;
- Theory of Constraints;
- Timetabling.
The intended audience of the
Encyclopedia of Operations Research
and Management Science is technically diverse and wide; it includes anyone concerned with the science, techniques, and ideas of how one makes decisions. As this audience encompasses many professions, educational backgrounds and skills, we were attentive to the form, format and scope of the articles. Thus, the articles are designed to serve as initial sources of information for all such readers, with special emphasis on the needs of students. Each article provides a background or history of the topic, describes relevant applications, overviews present and future trends, and lists seminal and current references. To allow for variety in exposition, the authors were instructed to present their material from both research and applied perspectives.
The
Encyclopedia has been organized into specific topics that collectively encompass the foundations, applications, and emerging elements of this ever-changing field. We also wanted to establish the close associations that OR/MS has maintained with other scientific endeavors, with special emphasis on its symbiotic relationships to computer science, information processing, and mathematics. Based on our broad view of OR/MS, we commissioned 228 major expository articles and complemented them by numerous entries: descriptions, discussions, definitions, and abbreviations. The connections between topics are highlighted by an entry's final `See' statement, as appropriate. Each topical article provides a background or history of the topic, describes relevant applications, overviews present and future trends, and lists seminal and current references. Of significant importance is that each contributed topic has been authored by a leading authoritative researcher on that particular topic.
Customer Reviews:
Encyclopedias Are My Best Friends.......2002-05-21
People keep on badgering me about what do I do and how did I earn my living? Well, I am a management scientist. They respond with a blank stare.
Some time ago a curious person asked a management scientist, "What is Management Science?" The expert who was a wit answered, "Management Science is what management scientists do". But an even greater wit, C. West Churchman, overheard this and corrected the statement: "Management Science is what management scientists think they do. Today, there is an unequivocal answer: "Management Science is what is printed in the Encyclopedia of Operations Research and Management Science".
So now when a friend badgers me I show the Encyclopedia, "This is what I and my colleagues do". He weighs the tome, leaves through and typically says "You told me you help management. This is a book on math. How come?" I shrug my shoulders, "As you can see, we find that math is the most effective way to deal with some management issues.
We need to realize that publication of an encyclopedia is a defining moment in our intellectual history. When in 1745 the publisher André Le Breton approached Denis Diderot (1713-1784), French philosopher, who also wrote novels, essays, plays, and art and literary criticism with a view to bringing out a French translation of Ephraim Chambers' Cyclopedia after two other translators had withdrawn from the project. Diderot undertook the task with the distinguished mathematician Jean Le Rond d'Alembert as coeditor but soon profoundly changed the nature of the publication, broadening its scope and turning it into a vast, new 35-volume work, Encyclopédie ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des metiers which is usually known as the Encyclopédie . He gathered around him a team of dedicated litterateurs, scientists, and even priests, including Voltaire and Montesquieu. All were fired with a common purpose: to further knowledge by a "rational dictionary" and to bring out the essential principles and applications of every art and science.
Drs. Saul I. Gass and the late Carl M. Harris followed in the footsteps of Diderot and d'Alembert, gathered an international group of the best brains and produced the monumental 917-page tome of the Encyclopedia of OR/MS, with 228 major expository articles to provide decision makers and problem solvers "comprehensive overview of the wide range of ideas, methodologies, and synergistic forces that combine to form the pre-eminent decision-aiding fields of operations research and management science".
The Single Reference for Operations Research.......2002-05-02
This work provides an excellent reference for OR/MS. It would be difficult to identify a related topic not addressed. The entries are truly encyclopedic in nature, succinctly presenting material supported by key references. Besides broad coverage of major areas of OR useful for researchers venturing into new areas, separate entries provide information on key concepts. This greatly facilitates retrieving in-depth information. For example, decision analysis is covered as a general topic, while a separate entry provides information regarding certainty equivalents.
Of interest to military OR analysts, there are entries for battle modeling, combat model and combat simulation, military operations research, and military operations other than war. Interestingly there are also entries discussing US Air Force and Navy operations research while there does not seem to be one specific to Army OR. The military roots of OR is discussed in these entries, as well as that outlining the history of the Operations Research Office.
If the book has a weakness, it must be the index. While certainly a good effort, there seem to be a number of items in the entries that, had they been included in the index, would have made the book more useful. And while the encyclopedia can't be everything to everyone, I would have included more multivariate statistical topics notwithstanding my second sentence above. The cost of the book places it out of reach for most personal libraries.
