Book Description
"In an era when government policy emphasizes ‘scientifically based research’ (No Child Left Behind), this book provides an important resource in understanding what this means."
Diane Browder, Snyder Distinguished Professor of Special Education
University of North Carolina, Charlotte
"This is a superb book. I learned by reading it, and I found myself rethinking some of my own thinking about research on individuals with disabilities."
James E. Ysseldyke, Professor
University of Minnesota
Learn how research can lead to improved skills and contribute to successful lives.
When face-to-face with the challenge of providing special needs children with a quality education, teachers and other educators are often met with the dilemma of inadequate research on the topic, or they are uninformed that a framework for critically analyzing and conducting special education research exists. Research-based practice is a powerful tool for success, as it can inform educators and others about educational strategies that work.
Research and Evaluation Methods in Special Education is intended to enable educators to design, conduct, and report research and evaluation in a way that transforms special education by addressing the needs of persons with disabilities as heterogeneous, cultural groups. This text provides practical guidance for:
- Planning research and evaluation
- Addressing the implications of legislation and program evaluation
- Using empirically based data for decision-making in a variety of settings
- Assessing additional research needs in areas such as standards-based reforms, personnel development, family involvement, and new and developing topics in special education
- Using quantitative research methods, including casual comparative, correlational, single case, and survey research
- Using qualitative methods, including identification and selection of research participants, information collection, and more
This excellent resource provides an approach to research and evaluation that helps educators better understand and address the needs of students with various disabilities, including blindness, mental retardation, deafness, learning disabilities, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful.......2007-02-07

Technical writing.......2005-10-26
This book is excellent for technical writing. It was required for my research methods course and I am so happy I pruchased it. If you are looking to publish any reseach that you have conducted this will tell you exactly what you need to have on paper to make it into a journal.
Great reference manual and text!.......2000-01-20
This was one of my very first books in graduate school and it was the key to understanding all of the literature I'll ever need to read. This text fully explains how to break down highly technical research into easily understandable and useful material. Now I feel confident in picking up any piece of research and knowing whether it is a valid and reliable source of information. I can also apply the same methods to testing materials as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed by research.

From the author: This study reports new analyses from an earlier study by Antil, Jenkins, Wayne, & Vadasy (1998) in which 21 general education classroom teachers were interviewed about their use of cooperative learning. We report teachers' perceptions of how cooperative learning benefits special education and remedial students, the percentage of these Students who consistently participated in classroom cooperative learning activities, its efficacy for these students, and the kind of modifications teachers made for students with special needs: Teachers were generally positive about cooperative learning's efficacy for students with learning problems, while acknowledging that it worked better for some students than others. Major benefits were improved self-esteem, a safe learning environment, and better classroom success rates and products. The primary modification for special and remedial education students was selecting suitable partners for them.

Book Description
Japan has major problems to address, if it wishes to remain an economic superstar in the 21st century. Can Japan continue to grow as an economic superpower, now that it has caught up with the technological frontier by borrowing technology? Herbig explores the Japanese and American cultures, business practices, and government behavior, in order to determine an optimum combination. International managers and CEOs, business scholars and graduate students will find Herbig's insights into future scenarios for both Japan and America very valuable. After examining historical evidence of Japan's creativity, Herbig provides fresh insight into Japanese innovative strengths and weaknesses, and analyzes Japanese product development strategies and target costing. A comparison between U.S. and Japanese innovation processes shows how American thinking focuses excessively upon the earliest stages of the process. It also shows the advantages of imitation and application, as well as the risks involved in being a follower, even one as good as Japan.

The FMEA Pocket Handbook
ASIN: 0849319102 |
Book Description
Challenged by stringent regulations, vigorous competition, and liability lawsuits, medical device manufactures must develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective products, and managing and reducing risk is a vital element of reaching that goal. A practical guide to achieving corporate consistency while dramatically cutting the time required for studies, Guidelines for Failure Modes and Effects Analysis for Medical Devices focuses on Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and its application throughout the life cycle of a medical device. It outlines the major U.S. and E.U. standards and regulations and provides a detailed yet easy-to-read overview of risk management and risk analysis methodologies, common FMEA pitfalls, and FMECA-Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis. Discover how the FMEA methodology can help your company achieve a more cost-effective manufacturing process by improving the quality and reliability of your products. This new FMEA manual from the experts at Dyadem is the ultimate resource for you and your colleagues to learn more about Failure Modes and Effects Analysis and then teach others at your facility. This comprehensive manual is sure to become a standard reference for engineering professionals.
Customer Reviews:
Try Another Book!.......2005-06-15
This book is extremely basic. The text is double spaced and not very detailed. Sample FMEA forms are blank templates; no filled in examples are provided. In the process mapping chapter, symbols are missing from Table 9-1. A filled in example of a process map is presented with no descriptive text. A functional block diagram is explained in 21 words - absolutely inadequate though the example in Figure 9-2 helps. A reliability block diagram is shown and is described in 22 words - impossible to decipher! Definitely not worth the price, go elsewhere!
