    Book Description

Wouldn't you look forward to spending a few minutes with St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the best known and loved of all modern saints throughout the world? The life and message of this great saint and Doctor of the Church has blessed millions of Catholics around the globe. Her simple, direct, and sure way to holiness has helped many gain a better understanding of the spiritual life and a deeper union with Christ. This book has been designed to bring the inspiration of her words to you in a format that is as simple and direct as her own "little way".

This deluxe book contains a collection of hundreds of direct quotes and short sayings of Thérèse, carefully arranged by the major virtues of the Christian life. The quotes are arranged and classified by the virtues represented in the classic 15 decade Rosary. The Rosary mysteries provide us a mosaic of virtues for the spiritual life, a ladder for advancing in holiness and in the love of God.

3 out of 5 stars QUOTES FROM A GREAT SAINT.......2007-01-09

This hardcover, very thin, little book has a nice organizational plan. The wonderful and inspiring quotes from the writings of St. Thérèse of Lisieux are arranged according to the Virtues of the Holy Rosary and other spiritual virtues: Prayer, The Eucharist, The Church, The Bible, and The Saints. The quotations are taken from three sources, including The Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of Saint Thérèse edited by Mother Agnes of Jesus translated by Michael Day. This is a highly edited version of the original text, not the standard Clark translation preferred today. The biographical introduction to this tiny book has some surprising inaccuracies, and the frontispiece drawing doesn't resemble St. Thérèse at all.

    5 out of 5 stars A Guide to Love.......2004-02-21

I truly enjoy this book. In the introduction McClernon writes: "Taking time apart from busy lifestyles to spend a few minutes with a saint promises precisely the kind of nourishment . . souls need." From the back cover: "Arranged according to the mysteries of the Rosary and their companion virtues, this treasury of quotes from St. Therese of Lisieux offers inexhaustible wisdom, clarity, simlicity, hope, trust - above all, it incarnates the Love that lights the path of the 'Little Way' to Paradise." Simply this book has brought me closer to God, through St. Therese, by helping me to meditate through the rosary. At different times during the day I pray my way through a decade from which I emerge refreshed and conscious of the Lord's presence. The third Sorrowful Mystery, the crowning with thorns, for example, has about 30 quotes from Therese focusing on the virtue of courage - such as: "I am not going to worry, but I will always stretch out my suppliant arms towards You with great love. I cannot believe that You would abandon me", and "Let us struggle without respite. Let us go on, however much tired of the struggle. Where would our merit be if we fought only when we feel courageous?" I feel as though I am receiving spiritual guidance from Therese when I read these quotes and meditate on them, and the mystery, as I say a Hail Mary. The virtues help me integrate the mystery with my life giving me encouragement, direction and inspiration in my daily struggle to be part of the world but not of it. McClernon has also come out with a second volume that follows the same pattern with quotes from St. Francis De Sales which is also excellent. For some reason the second volume does not appear on Amazon yet but in the meantime you can find it the on publisher's site, www.ignatius.com, or at a Daughters of St. Paul bookstore. I sum, thank you Ignatius and Mr. McClernon and please keep these volumes coming!

5 out of 5 stars My funny bone hurts.......2002-10-23

There is no doubt that humans are the funniest animals on the planet, and appropos of the medical theme of this humorous book, I thought I would make one comment in that vein.

Yes, we humans are pretty funny creatures, but what would you expect of a mammal that actually has a "funny bone?" I'm referring to the upper-arm bone, which is actually named the "humerus." Well, it's actually spelled a little differently, but only by a couple of letters, and that's probably because anatomists didn't usually win first place in their spelling bees in school.

Well, I don't know if the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone myself, but I did learn how to spell way back when. Anyway, this book is sure to tickle the humerus or funny bone in all of us, and it just goes to show you that although seriousness may be only skin-deep, funny is truly to the bone.

5 out of 5 stars The true medicine is humour.......2001-09-14

As a medical student I really enjoyed reading this book. I've read other books and articles of Bennet, and enjoy his humorous way of putting things. Asa foreigner I had a few difficulties enjoying all of the jokes related to US health services. However, all in all I found the book worthwhile reading, and I had some really big laughs that cramped my stomach. I am sure I am going to read and reread this book in the future.....after all, good humour and hilarious jokes are the best medicine ever invented, and there are no sideeffects!!!

5 out of 5 stars This book is a gem!.......2001-03-02

This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. Dr. Bennett did a terrific job pulling together both classic and original quotes about doctors and medicine. Enjoy the material when you have some free time during the day or comb through the collection looking for amusing lines to use on rounds, lectures, or other medical situations. Best of all, buy the book for your medical friends or anyone who enjoys funny and insightful lines about doctors, medicine, and health.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for The Doctor's Book of Humorous Quotations.......2001-02-25

The following reviews were sent in about my new book:

The practice of medicine is a serious affair. Dr. Bennett's new book is a lighthearted counterweight to our daily effort, allowing us to chuckle at ourselves, our colleagues, our profession and all of those who interact with it. The book is also a good source for that fitting joke or quip you might need for a lecture, a toast or a presentation. Open to any page for a few moments of zany entertainment. It makes a perfect gift for yourself, a friend or as a "thank you" to a colleague. Alan Stone, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine, The George Washington University Medical Center.

This is the funniest book I've read in a long time. It's loaded with anecdotes, definitions, jokes and quotations about doctors and medicine. Almost no medically related subject is left out. Even in you think you don't have time to read (who does?) find some time for this relaxing and enjoyable book. Howard Fischer, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Humor and laughter in medicine are needed now more than ever before because of the increasing stresses of modern medical practice. This gem of a book compiled by Dr. Bennett, himself a noted humorist, includes a great variety of quips, quotes, and jokes that can serve as a lifeline to sanity for stressed-out physicians whether in practice or still in their training years. Much of the material in this book is both funny and original and can be used to liven up ward rounds, medical lectures, and yes, even the sacred physician-patient relationship. It should be relished but should also be shared. Lugwig A. Lettau, Charleston, SC.

One of my co-workers, Ryan, has this calendar and he shares the jokes with all of us everyday. It's amazing how unfunny doctors are. The hilarity of this calendar is how stupid and pointless the jokes are.

Growing up as a child of a doctor, I had to listen to countless jokes my dad practiced on me. My fellow siblings and I grew accustumed to the wild stories my dad came up with daily. Some true, most greatly elaborated. This book is a great compilation of those doctor jokes that I now find myself missing.

The sure cure for a stale bedside manner is now available in convenient (and hysterical) daily doses. Doctors: Jokes, Quote, and Anecdotes is back for 2003 with just the right prescription to heal the hurts and keep heart rates just slightly elevated. Each page of this calendar offers a joke, clever quip, or outrageous-but-true medical anecdote. Humorous entries from medical anecdote. Humorous entries from medical charts and records even make occasional appearances. The 700,000 doctors in the United States are only a small segment of the population who'll enjoy this contagiously comical calendar. Anyone who comes into contact with our nation's health care system knows that from the waiting room to the operating table, there's no shortage of humorous inspiration. If laughter truly is the best medicine, consider this calendar a little Mayo Clinic for the desk.

                    Book Description

The telecommunications industry is experiencing a worldwide explosion of growth as few other industries ever have. However, as recently as a decade ago, the bulk of telecommunications services were delivered by the traditional telephone network, for which design and analysis principles had been under steady development for over three-quarters of a century. This environment was characterized by moderate and steady growth, with an accompanying slower development of new network equipment and standardization processes. In such a near-static environment, attention was given to optimization techniques to squeeze out better profits from existing and limited future investments. To this end, forecasts of network services were developed on a regular planning cycle and networks were optimized accordingly, layer by layer, for cost-effective placement of capacity and efficient utilization. In particular, optimization was based on a fairly stable set of assumptions about the network architecture, equipment models, and forecast uncertainty. This special edition is devoted to heuristic approaches for telecommunications network management, planning, and expansion. We hope that this collection brings to the attention of researchers and practitioners an array of techniques and case studies that meet the stringent `time to market' requirements of this industry and which deserve exposure to a wider audience. Telecommunications will face a tremendous challenge in the coming years to be able to design, build, and manage networks in such a rapidly evolving industry. Development and application of heuristic methods will be fundamental in our ability to meet this challenge.
