This book represents the fruit of a conference held in Oxford on March 3, 2006 under the auspices of the Institute of European and Comparative Law in the Oxford University Law Faculty. To present a comprehensive analysis of the concept of privatisation its origins and limits, (b) To identify the legal and institutional framework for privatisation in different European countries from a comparative perspective; (c) To define and analyse particularly legal issues which arise during the privatisation transactions: e.g. labour law, competition law etc.; (d) To evaluate which features of the successful legal and organisational framework of privatisation have been successful so as to provide guidelines for those individuals and organisations participating in the privatisation exercises. This work found out that there is no simple, internationally applicable recipe for privatisation; various legal methods and techniques can be used to privatise state owned enterprises. Because each country has different circumstances, it is impossible to provide a unique model for privatisation; each country needs to design its own model according to its circumstances. Privatisation is an essential but insufficient element for structural economic reform in the economy and society. Privatisation is not a panacea, it is not the solution to every economic and administrative problem; selling an enterprise to the private sector does not mean an end to all problems. Also privatisation is not an overnight process or a magic touch; it will be a lengthy process. Furthermore, a decision that something can be privatised does not mean that it should be privatised. In that context, privatisation is not good or bad; it is an economic and social instrument. If it is well designed it may bring substantial benefits to the economy and society. In many countries, many state owned enterprises, particularly the ones which are financially weak, have still not been privatised. This finding revealed that the privatisation process will be in the political and economic agenda for at least few more decades.

This international comparison of pension plans lends great understanding to the transformation taking place in almost every nation around the world. It covers ten of the twelve countries of the European Union, as well as the United States and Japan. The project is interdisciplinary, covering a number of fields, such as economics, law, actuarial science, sociology, and political science, that contribute to the analysis of retirement income systems. The chapters vary in scope - some are comparative, some are restricted to a single country or to one type of plan in one country. Despite their diversity, the chapters share a common awareness of three aspects of pension plans: the importance of actors' roles in shaping each system, the different economic and social domains affected by retirement plans, and the interconnections between social security and supplementary plans.

The historic European Union Directive on Data Protection will take effect in October 1998. A key provision will prohibit transfer of personal information from Europe to other countries if they lack "adequate" protection of privacy. If enforced as written, the Directive could create enormous obstacles to commerce between Europe and other countries, such as the United States, that do not have comprehensive privacy statutes.
This book provides the first detailed analysis of the sector-by-sector effects of the Directive. It examines such topics as the tension between privacy laws and modern information technologies, issues affecting a wide range of businesses and other organizations, and effects on other prominent sectors with large transborder data flows. The book concludes with detailed policy recommendations on how to avoid a coming trade war with Europe.

This is a necessary tool to every person, not only to lawyers, interested to know how the "personal data protection" works in the European Union. You will be surprised with the similarities between the privacy regimes in Europe and the United States, notwithstanding this systems differ in important particulars. The book includes the study of the ways in which restrictive data protection law may clash with free trade agreements signed by the US and the members of the EU, as the World Trade Organization. The book is highly recommended.

All I needed to read in this excellent book was Chapter One. The author is right, ideal loss prevention is all in the Mindset. The tone is set from the first page on that loss in a business just isn't acceptable. That's a winning attitude if ever there was one. If you have Mr. Copeland's mindset, you can accomplish all the great profit-protecting ideas he presents in all the remaining chapters.
This is a sensible book, with common sense throughout its sixteen chapters. We're not taught business common sense anymore it seems, so this book is indeed refreshing.
After the Mindset, I was especially impressed with the cash protection chapter, and then all the remaining information that I'm using to protect my assets today. It works!
We're practicing absolutely zero loss in my business every day now, and we're all the better for it. This book is mandatory reading for my employees. Fine book.
