    Book Description

Billie won first place in the Nebraska Press Women's Contest for Non-Fiction Books this year with her memoir, Bertie and Me. Her new book details home remedies, clothing of the early 1900s and the excitement of owning a "talking machine." Plenty of pictures add to the explanation of early roundups (now rodeos) and Model T's. Billie tells how to get our tongue unstuck if you lick the "frosting" from a cold iron bolt in the middle of winter. The book also has an entertaining chapter on privies.

        Book Description

Does knowing a person’s gender give us a reliable sense of how aggressive, competitive, or emotional he or she is? In this volume leading scholars examine different aspects of this issue. Carol Tavris discusses the state of gender research and the reasons for the continuing popularity of essentialist theories of gender opposition. Nicki Crick and a team of researchers reassess stereotyped assumptions about gender and aggression, employing a more comprehensive definition of aggression as damaging relations rather than only bodies. Diane Gill looks at the relationship between gender and sports competition, explicating how the unique social context of sports affects gender perceptions and performances. Reed Larson and Joseph Pleck question the popular conception of men as less emotional than women, studying gender differences in “felt” rather than “expressed” emotions in daily life. Leonore Tiefer considers the ways in which gender roles in sexuality are socially rather than biologically constructed.

                          Book Description

This 200 page user-friendly training manual is divided into two parts. Part One is a "short course" on autism spectrum disorders (ASD) for people "in the trenches." Part Two takes a "cookbook style" look at the art and science of paraprofessional support for students with ASD and those with other cognitive impairments.

Jam-packed with examples, and summary "take home" messages, How To Be A Para Pro contains specific information on four separate categories of support: Peripheral, Direct Academic, Social / Play & Leisure, and Behavioral, as well as Data & Record-Keeping forms and ideas. Special features include a blueprint for determining the optimal level of caregiver support and ways to reduce prompt dependency, an abundance of reproducible record-keeping forms, and "how-to vignettes" to aid in the application of skills.

I found this book very helpful when working with children with autism. The way it is written makes it easy to read and well organized. The teacher I work with appreciated the book for the examples, suggestions and many reusable forms. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who works with children who have autism.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific book for parents.......2003-10-21

This book has a wealth of information. Even though the chapters are short, and because of that, very readable, they are jam packed with useful information. I especially liked the tremendous number of specific, useful strategies located in the tables within part 2. I wonder if the reviewer below read the same book I read because I found this VERY readable.

                                Book Description

More and more private and public organizations are realizing the value of paraprofessionals -- defined here as employees who have high school educations and for the most part do not have four-year college degrees. As downsizing and budget reductions have eliminated many professional positions, paraprofessionals have brought both economic and social benefits to their employers. When organizations recognize the benefits of employing paraprofessionals, they then need assistance in training and supervising their new type of employee. This book presents a model of this specialized training that will guide trainers' efforts from the start-up phase through ongoing training. It will also help supervisors with specific issues related to training and supervision, such as maximizing productivity; dealing with conflict; creating job descriptions; conducting meaningful evaluations; identifying specific performance deficits; rewarding outstanding performance; and motivating paraprofessionals toward excellence.

                                      Book Description

Don't Park Your Brain Outside is a book filled with anecdotes, helpful hints, the latest methods, and even cartoons!

Don't Park Your Brain Outside is the thinking person's guide to extraordinary project performance with "SMART™" management. Francis Hartman has assembled a cohesive and balanced approach to highly effective project management. It is deceptively simple. Called SMART, this new approach is Strategically Managed, Aligned, Regenerative, and Transitional. It is based on research and best practices, tempered by hard-won experience. SMART has saved significant time and money on the hundreds of large and small, simple and complex projects on which it has been tested.

This book takes a different approach to project management, making it more accessible to the many people who manage or participate in projects. It offers an approach to project management that deals with many of the real day-to-day concerns of the practitioner in delivering difficult and volatile projects. It brings together the processes and techniques that many exceptional managers use and that researchers are trying to understand —the balance of hard tools and people skills that lead to highly successful projects.

                                      5 out of 5 stars SMART Choice.......2005-01-04

Are your projects smart? SMART projects are Strategically Managed, Aligned, Regenerative, and Transitional. The author discusses these principles in theory and real-life application. The book is full of graphs, drawings, anecdotes, and cartoons, making it an enjoyable read. You'll use the practical advice!

And a classic line to remember:

"It does not matter how well we deliver the project if it is the wrong one. It will still be wrong when it has been perfectly executed and is on time and within budget."

5 out of 5 stars Great Project Managment Guide.......2002-05-02

Having read a few guides, our company has adopted this one as the rule. A great book with practical advice on all related matters.I would highly recomend it for proffesionals as well as novices.
