Customer Reviews:
very good.......2001-09-30
Next to the Vault.com career web site, the US News Best Graduate Schools guide and their web site is the most critical resource for the professional development of aspiring graduate school and MBA students.
A few good articles, but most of the info is on the net.......2001-08-19
This is really an expanded magazine issue. It has a few good articles - "Smart Degrees for the Real World", "Part-times Rule" - but it is mostly just a ranking of various types of graduate programs. There are also some statistics on each individual school and academic program (tuition, application deadlines, etc.) but almost all schools have a website where you can get the most up-to-date information. Given its statistics-oriented bias, this guide doesn't give much guidance on how to chose one school over another. You won't find helpful information like class descriptions or student comments. Better to buy one of the guides for the specific type of graduate school you're considering.
Maybe "Best Professional Schools 2002".......2001-07-24
I purchased this publication to give to a daughter graduating from a liberal arts college. She is unsure of what to pursue in graduate school because her interests are so diverse. This book is mainly concerned with Law Schools, Medical Schools, Engineering Schools, Business Schools, and Schools of Education (not sure how that one squeezed in with all the other ultimate big salary options). While she could do well in any of those professional schools, that's not where her interests lie. I wish it had more information about more diverse programs. There is a very small section that covers the huge diversity of "other" Graduate Programs. If you know you want to go to Law School, Med school, or get an MBA, this will be useful. If you are undecided or have a multidisciplinary bent, this is much less useful.
Good stuff for less!.......2001-04-20
Want an honest, up-front guide to the best gradaute schools without having to spend crazy amounts of dollars? This is it for you! The coolest thing about this guide is its rankings about different schools and the level of information it provides. ... it does the following: 1. Shows you a listing of the best grad schools (obviously!) 2. Makes up your mind for you.
Now you may wonder how it does that.. it will lay out very valuable information in a concise, one-page format and all you need to do is look at the info, compare it and short-list your top 5 (or 8 or 10 or whatever) schools. Forget the hassle of poring over pages and pages because this is a short, paperback book that really gives you what you want. This will take you where you need to go in quick, easy steps. I know I may make it sound like an exercise equipment, well, thats really not the case here. believe me, I have read gazillions of grad school books in all price ranges and this is the most satisfactory of them all. Not buying it over a more expensive, flashy book is a mistake. Dont let this opportunity go, esp to all you stressed out college seniors!

Are you ready for one of the most important decisions of your life? Pick up the Kaplan Newsweek College Catalog 2000 Edition and get a leg up on the competition. You'll find a wealth of information on how to narrow down your choice from the hundreds of schools out there, recommendations for top schools in terms of academics, sports, extracurriculars, and other areas, hints on getting into the school of your choice, and much more. As this is the information age, there are plenty of online resources included, and as most colleges have their own sites, you can always use the Catalog as an informative index and then visit them firsthand.
But the meat of the book--the listings--are worthwhile on their own. About 1,000 different colleges and universities are listed, with easy-to-read information on tuition, population, and selectivity, as well as details on student life, admissions, and postgraduate work condensed to one or two pages. Additional comments from counselors highlight particularly strong programs or features that will appeal to select students, and the strong indexing makes finding the right school for you a cinch. Of course, getting in is still up to you, as is paying for it, but getting there is half the fun. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Find the School That's Right for You.
Kaplan and Newsweek have teamed up to produce the definitive college directory. College Catalog 2002 contains detailed information on more than 1,000 colleges and universities across the country, providing you with the critical data you need to make an informed decision on what school to attend.

College Catalog 2002 provides you with detailed admissions information on every school, including required admissions tests, selectivity, application and financial aid deadlines, demographics, contact information, and much more.
Easy to Use.
It's all here -- and you can actually find it. College Catalog 2002 uses helpful indexes that sort schools by cost, size, and selectivity. Also included are lists of schools with popular programs in your prospective field of study. You'll find what you need quickly and easily.
Hear What the Experts Think.
We surveyed guidance counselors from around the country. Only in College Catalog 2002 will you read their candid and often revealing responses, including their picks for outstanding programs, best values, "hidden treasures," and much more.
Customer Reviews:
beats Fiske cold.......2001-12-12
This is an excellent guide, with information on over 1,000 schools. The information is the kind you really need, like application requirements and how much financial aid the school gives. It's also pretty interesting to read the campus profiles to get a feel for the different colleges. What was helpful to me was being able to see how my board scores stacked up against other students who got into the various schools--I applied to some schools I didn't think I'd get into, and got financial aid at my first choice. I thought the comments from the guidance counselors were fun, and I like reading their top choices.
This book beat the other guides cold for completeness and usefulness to me. I recommend it to any junior or senior starting to research college applications.

Customer Reviews:
An interesting and helpful read -- if used appropriately.......2002-07-27
We must admit we have a few slight reservations about the subjectivity of some of the college students surveyed for this book. Despite the purported 59,000 surveys that were conducted, it seems that some individual surveys may have been given additional weight in the interests of making the book more 'cutting edge'. Nonetheless, the school profiles are very complete and contain such pertinent information as admissions criteria, deadlines, social life, and even cafeteria food.
This book is most helpful for identifying schools that may have otherwise passed under the proverbial radar. However, we do not recommend using this book as a sole source of information for college selection decision making.
Good... but you can find better.......2002-05-07
This book does a great job at descibing the schools and tells the top school in each catagory, aka public, private, different price ranges, areas of study and the list goes on. My problem with this book is that the introuction states the significance of finding the town, academics, people, that you would like, but I found it incredibly hard to use this book in that fashion. This is a very general book and I would suggest that if you buy it to get another one on a more specific thing that you are looking at for schools
Must-read!!.......2002-04-30
This book is very insightful. I am the author of The ABC's of College Life, a hip, street-smart guide for college students and I highly recommend The Best 311 Colleges. It has a lot of information the other directories leave out.
Very Helpful.......2002-04-08
A few months ago I started the big "college search." I got this book, and it has been the biggest help in what is a pretty big deal. The Princeton Review provides helpful information about all the colleges in there. It is objective, and very useful. There are some witty quips throughout, and it is very honest about what are a colleges ups and downs. Just about everything you need to know is in this book: admissions, academics, student life, financial info... Everything is covered thoroughly, and it is easy to read. This book is definitely a good purchase.
The Best All-Around College Guide.......2002-02-20
As a high school Junior, I've gone through my share of college guides (Fiske, Peterson's, College Handbook, etc) and my final conclusion is that Princeton's 331 Best Colleges is the ONLY general guide you need. Each college gets a full 2 pages in this book, which seems to be just enough. The format is the most comprehensive that I've seen, and the information is the most useful (for both parents and students). It tells you everything you need to know, right down to what the kids do for fun (from drinking, hanging out and doing laundry, skiing and hiking, to political protests), the Admissions information (SAT Ranges, ACT, GPA, things the admissions officers look for), quotes directly from the students about the student body and town/city, a general overview of the feeling of the college, a perspective on the Academic pressure and strengths/weaknesses, Financial Aid Info, and a general profile of the student body and of the social/extra-curricular life. It also shows a list of percentages of the diversity of the students, and "Survey Says" section (for example, it will say: Athletic facilities are great, Great library, Musical organizations are hot, Computer lab needs improving, etc). Other things that I've found to be helpful are the "Most Popular Majors" section, and the list of other colleges applicants to a certain college looked at and preferred/didn't prefer.
Generally, this book does not try to "sell" the schools, as all viewbooks directly from the colleges tend to do. The quotes from the students seem honest, from points of view on how challenging the workload is, to how diverse the student body is, to how much school spirit the kids have. Everything in the book is pretty candid, and I feel like the information is trust-worthy.
Overall, I feel much more informed about the colleges I plan to apply to after reading about them in Princeton's Guide. For another perspective, I'd also recommend "The Insider's Guide to the Colleges," which is written by college students. But overall, The Best 331 College is a good buy for anybody entering or in the middle of the college process, parents and students alike.

Better Than Ever.......2001-11-05
Peterson's usually excellent college guide has become better than ever after I obtained a little known but trailblazing book on the significance to America of higher education called "West Point" by Norman Thomas Remick. EVERY college seeker and parent should read it before attempting to decide on a college. It's critical to enabling you avoid making a mistake that could change your life. It adds much more value to the great college guides such as "Peterson's 4 Year Colleges 2002". You'll feel much more informed, comfortable, and confident of your decisions.

Bowerman and O'Connell's, Essentials of Business Statistics (EBS) delivers clear and understandable explanations of business statistics concepts through the use of case studies and examples. The non-calculus-based approach thoroughly covers descriptive and inferential statistics with an emphasis on business applications. Both procedural and conceptual aspects of the subject are covered, analysis and interpretation are emphasized, and shows students how to select the appropriate statistical tool for use in a particular business application. The abundant examples reflect real applications of statistics relevant to business students. A key distinction of EBS is the rich and realistic continuing case study examples that provide the architecture of the text. Unlike virtually all other texts, which use discreet examples for each individual subject area, EBS relies on these continuing examples to "frame" the study of statistics and place it squarely into the realm of real business problems and scenarios. Part and parcel with this approach are the rich and relevant data sets used to demonstrate statistical concepts. Finally, Bowerman and O'Connell also provide a fresh technology perspective. Excel and Minitab output is included in the text to help students visualize concepts, and a robust Excel add-in package, Megastat is both available on the accompanying CD ROM and has been thoroughly integrated into the text. The coverage of the Internet included in the book is second to none.
