Customer Reviews:
If re-written, might satisfy a TOTAL novice.......2002-04-16
I bought this book a couple of years ago and read it in early 2002. My disappointment was due in large part (I thought) to developments in the industry since publication. But I notice that it's still the same edition being sold.
Problems:
1. Very superficial exploration of issues; does not in any way give you a thorough understanding of the subject
2. Nor is it a "how to" guide.
3. The dot com crash highlights the book's lack of objectivity - generally bullish on getting into a web business, but no strategic insight into how to sustain it.
It may be OK for those with almost no knowledge of the internet *if* it is updated in a new edition. If, however, you keep up with the news and have delved far enough into Amazon to be able to read this review, then you don't need the book.
Thank you Amazon for providing the "look inside" function which unfortunately did not exist when I bought Mr. Powers' book.
Not Really..........2001-08-03
This book had very little useful information for me, a person who's interested in starting his own, personal website that offers a few items or services commercially. Instead, the book tends to wallow in the pop-psychology of "doing business on the Internet." For instance, the author talks about the anxieties some folks (potential customers) have about making electronic purchases on the web... repeatedly... and ends up using a significant portion of the book to express what could just as effectively have been written in a paragraph or two.
How to start a business website.......2001-07-18
This book should be named "Why to Start a Business Website" I am very disapointed. Example: Chapter 6 "Building Your Website" basically says hire a website designer and what qualifications that person should have. Thanks for that info., but isn't that common sense! Overall I think this book is fluff writen by someone who is not interested in helping an individual start a website.
It's got exactly what I need!.......2001-01-06
After reading 4 or 5 other books on this subject, I found this book able to fill in the blank spots in my understanding, and will be using this as the definitive text in establishing my business on-line. I simply do not understand how the reviewers that thought it was shallow and not very informative could say that, if they really read it.
for the absolute beginner.......2000-12-25
This book has almost no useful information for anyone with the slightest familiarity with a computer and the internet. By virtue of its title, I thought I was going to learn the basic nuts and bolts of setting up my own business website. Instead it's only advice was to hire a professional to do it.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Contribution - Read this book first.......2007-08-25
It is difficult to watch television or even to drive around in one's hometown without finding an advertisement enticing the reader to get rich through using her or his computer. Most such efforts are about making the scam artists rich at the expense of the gullible. The victims targeted are motivated people, especially those living in small towns with sparse opportunities. Despite scammers' traps, the Internet truly enables one to remain in such a small town and expand opportunities to make a decent livelihood well beyond those available locally. The authors offer genuine opportunity. They have credibility because they have created their own opportunity in just such a town with sparse resources. Instead of a get-rich quick scheme, these authors offer a very reflective approach through a book that conveys honestly that there is much to know and that maintaining a successful E-commerce business is hard work. However, if seeking a book written to lead the reader by the hand to success, this is the one to buy. Authors address both PC and Macintosh equally--a rarity in most reference books, and you don't need the latest-greatest computer to do anything they tell you to do. Cyber Gold... is well written and well illustrated. If the reader has difficulty understanding the text, there's a picture; if picture and text fail to convey meaning, there's an example. This is a surprisingly fine reference for a person who is a consumer at E-commerce sites too. Knowing how to tell a secure site from an insecure or scam site by its URL is certainly good information for a consumer. Another audience could simply be those who build their own web sites, even if these are not E-Commerce sites. I've purchased books on building web sites such as Dreamweaver for Dummies, and the skills and knowledge are not nearly so clearly presented there as in this resource. This book doesn't present the information in the stuffy style of most references. Instead, the reader feels like he/she is just having a chat with the authors and learning the information through a prose that is genuinely friendly. The publisher of the "...for Dummies" series should hire the authors of Cyber Gold... to rewrite some of their texts. As soon as I cracked open this book, I went to the chapter on meta-tags and immediately improved my own web pages. Not only can readers get a good book, but also it appears from the Amazon pages that readers can take a course from the authors through an accredited university. This is a class act skillfully executed. If the authors put their course online, it will be huge--they may have to attend to that more than the business that they created. Although copyrights are addressed, trademarks are not. I would like to see the procedure for obtaining trademarks added to a future edition.
The other reviews are not accurate............2007-08-24
Okay, I purchased the book and even though the book was produced in 2007 the data is dated. For instance they briefly talk about the need for a computer and setting up an e-business, in the discussion the authors reference Pentium II and Pentium III processors. They also reference a dropshipping website and claim the membership cost is a one time $69.95 fee, the reality is that this dropshipper charges $300 to sign up. Don't get me wrong, there is some good data in the book. But it definitely isn't what I would consider a great book. I would save your money and look for something else.
Excellent.......2007-08-10
This book is excellent. It has everything you need to know on starting an Internet Business.
Best guide out there!.......2007-05-14
I was so pleased to find a book that had everything I needed, all in one volume (for once!). I can build my website or do the search engine optimization thing and I don't feel like I should be using a professional instead. There were also tons of pictures and real life examples that were so helpful. Thumbs up.

Book Description
This book provides an up-to-date discussion of economic issues involved in analyzing regulations of product quality and performance in international trade. Among the issues addressed in this collection are restrictions on genetically modified foods and pesticide use and compatibility standards for computers. While such regulations may serve important goals, they may also interfere with international trade flow by raising the costs of compliance. This is of special concern to developing countries, which have found it difficult to meet the increasingly exacting regulations imposed by the United States and Europe.
Keith E. Maskus and John S. Wilson gather prominent international trade specialists to ask whether the impacts of such regulations may be quantified systematically in order to inform the international policy debate. The essays included here cover all fronts of the debate over regulatory issues and trade conflicts. The discussion ranges from a review of how trade conflicts emerge and how they are managed by the international trading system to a technical analysis of the potential impact of European restraints on trade in genetically modified products to an examination of methods for estimating the costs of compliance with environmental regulations. Considerable attention is paid to whether the emergence and enforcement of stronger standards among developed economies could result in diminished trade opportunities for developing countries. At the same time, the possibility that standards could expand market access through resolving consumer information problems is analyzed.
This book will appeal to international economists, international relations specialists, and individuals concerned about appropriate regulation of safety and health issues in the global economy.
Keith E. Maskus is Professor of Economics, University of Colorado, Boulder. John S. Wilson is Lead Economist, Development Economics Research Group, The World Bank.
