Centered on Textbooks and the Classroom.......2005-03-21
The first 90 pages of Roberts book examine basic study skills such as time management, memory, learning styles and critical reading and thinking. The next section is the particular strength of this volume, in which she looks at how to get the most out of your textbook. What follows is over 100 pages that look at how to locate major ideas, get the most out of grapics, identify your texts organizational style and how to study out of it. She finishes by looking at needed skills for the classroom. A useful addition to your library.
not the best...but a useful strategy guide for beginners!.......2002-03-25
I have a burning fascination for books on effective study strategies. I am always searching for better and more effective strategies to help kids and teens to excell in their school life...also, to help professional adults navigate text information overload as part of their evening academic pursuits.
Judy Roberts's Effective Study Skills is one of these books I have acquired as part of my lifelong search. It is comprehensive...also presents a broad range of study strategies, with quite extensive coverage of reading skills needed to process college textbooks...but still not the best.
However, looking from the standpoint of a beginner in acquiring study strategies, I reckon this book can still serve as a useful strategy guide.
For beginners, the layout of the book's substantial content runs as follows:
- Time Management;
- Concentration & Memory;
- Learning Styles;
- Critical Reading & Thinking;
- Gathering Main Ideas;
- Reading Graphic Illustrations;
- Understanding Organisational Patterns;
- Adopting Vocabulary Acquisition Strategies;
- Study Methods for Textbooks;
- Notetaking, Annotating & Underlining;
- Writing in College;
- Test Taking Skills;
The main reason why I rate it as 'not the best' is because I am comparing it with James Semones's 'Effective Study Skills'. Although the latter book is somewhat long-winded to some extent, I strongly feel it has a much broader scope and also farther depth than Judy Roberts' book. It is also written in a scholarly - albeit serious - manner, very unlike Roberts' book, which is written in an informal and conversational style.
For beginner readers into study strategies - and those who simply don't like long-winded books -, George Usova's 'Efficient Study Strategies' is worth exploring! It gives direct-to-the-point instructions...and also the easiest to read, especially for beginners!

Book Description
Science, technology and industry are in a period of change, reflecting an ongoing move to a knowledge-based economy. Rapid technological progress, driven by a productive scientific community and increasingly efficient business practices, the growing role of information and communications technologies (ICT), a continuing shift to services, and the globalisation of economy and society are among the key forces behind this transformation. The 1998 Science, Technology and Industry Outlook provides a broad and integrated assessment of this transformation process across the OECD area. The reader will find a discussion of recent trends and prospects in science, technology and industry, based on comparative indicators, such as output, investment and productivity, research and development (R&D), patent activity and innovation and knowledge flows, and an overview of the broad changes in science, technology and industry policy across OECD countries. This 1998 edition also includes special thematic chapters on: the determinants of productivity performance; the impact of advanced technologies in traditional industries; recent changes in R&D expenditure and its impact on innovation and growth; and how ICT is improving performance in the science system. A 50-page statistical annex updates OECD data on science, technology and industry and provides information on the main OECD databases covering these areas.

Good Book.......2007-10-05
This book arrived right on time. IT was in great condition, I was very pleased with my purchase.
Textbook.......2007-07-15
This is an easy to follow textbook for elementary statistics. There are a lot of examples and exercises provided.
:sigh:.......2007-05-27
Elementary Statistics was the book required for my class this semester and let me tell you - IT SUCKS!
This book pulls numbers out of thin air constantly and instead of telling you how to apply (or come up with) a formula it will just say something like "use a calculator to find ______"
I honestly learned more from google than from this book, and can't figure out why someone would make this required reading material for any class.
Get your act together!.......2007-02-26
This text is in its third edition, and the NUMEROUS wrong answers in back of the book still haven't been corrected!
Well organized, but inconsistent level. Elementary?.......2007-02-25
I was assigned this book for teaching my 100-level college intro-stats course. It is much better organized than the previous book I used, but it isn't as thorough. Some topics, such as calculating a median and other percentiles using depth on an ordered list, are simply omitted in this book.
It seems that some topics are omitted or glossed over because they might be too complex for "Elementary" statistics. On the other hand, the more complex topics in the book, such as hypothesis testing -- a topic that students consistently have a hard time understanding -- are not covered in enough depth.
Our students are sold this book in a package with videos on CD, a study guide, and a couple other things. This package is, in my opinion, worthless to a student in a class. They may be valuable to someone teaching themselves, or to a student in an online class, but for a live class, I think they are a waste of money.
The CD videos show a teacher working through the topics and some of the problems in the book. However, the teacher seems to have, (hands flail) y'know, a highly repetitive, (hands flail) y'know, (hands flail) vocabulary (hands flail), and it's (hands flail) y'know (hands flail) really hard to (hands flail) y'know, watch him (hands flail) y'know, teach. Like his hands have a nervous tic or something. I'm sure I have my own quirks in class, but this guy... his hands are something else.
All in all, I think the book is pretty good, with solid examples, well-highlighted definitions and key points. The chapter exercises are good in that they start VERY easy and progress through up to reasonably difficult, while staying within the limits of the text.
I told my department head: I like the book, but I recommend it without the bonus materials (and associated costs!).

Great.......2005-09-30
I love the book, however it took longer than I thought it would to get to me.
Any teacher who chooses this text..........2005-06-01
is a complete moron. This text is SO poorly organized and poorly written that students have absolutely no clue come test time. There is a great deal of time spent on examples, but the examples are never explained. If you're asked why or how on a test, you'd be sunk. If your teacher requires this text for your stats class, find a different class!
textbook for class...company was great!.......2005-02-14
i bought this book here online after purchasing it at a school bookstore for $150. I saw this online and decided to order it anyway b/c it was way cheaper. The reason I did not order it first was b/c I had a bad experience w/ online ordering for class textbooks. It took forever. The class was basically over when I got it and the other book never came. I received it in less than a week and it was in great condition and even came with the solutions manual. I quickly returned my other books to the bookstore for a refund. I will def. buy here again. Great experience.
Elementary Statistics by Larson et al........2004-02-17
This work is geared for the above average arts or business
student. It has a good coverage of the various probability
density functions and hypothesis testing and evaluation. A typical chapter has important definitions set forth, a "Try
It Yourself" problem set, notes to the instructor, numerous
exercises and an exhaustive summary. In chapter 1, the four levels of measurement are depicted. i.e. Nominal, Ordinal,
Interval and Ratio . The author provides a simple experimental
design consisting of identifying variables, developing a
detailed plan for collecting data, actual data collection,
descriptive statistics techniques and inferential statistics.
This book could be covered in one semester with the following
organization:
Data Collection Chapter 1
Scales, frequency Chapter 2
Probability Chapter 3
Distributions Chapter 4
Normal Distribution Chapter 5
Confidence Intervals Chapter 6
Hypothesis Testing Chapter 7
Correlation/Regression Chapter 9
Moving Averages
Chi Square Chapter 10
Theory of Expected Value
General Review and Finals
The appendix of the work contains an excellent presentation
on how to find areas under the standard normal curve. Overall,
the work presents a very ambitious agenda aimed at the
above-average collegiate student. The book could be supplemented
with the Schaum's Outline in Statistics. Students may utilize
a statistical calculator to assist with the work of the course.
Confusing!.......2003-08-11
I had to purchase this book for an online stats course - BIG mistake! The organization of the book is so incredibly confusing, and the "expanding the basics" problems are not illustrated in the chapter, nor do they have answers with which to check your answers. I have taken other reasoning courses (in class and online) and they were organized much better, with relevant examples that explained every step -- perfect for anyone who is basically trying to teach him/herself! I hope mathematics teachers nationwide realize how difficult this text is for students to follow. Consider another text!

All things I consider important are done right.......2005-09-27
As someone who regularly teaches a course in basic statistics, I am always trolling for a better textbook. Since the coverage in basic statistics courses has changed very little in the last few decades, all of the potential textbooks cover essentially the same things. Therefore, when examining a book for possible adoption, I generally use three criteria in making my decision.
*) Does the book cover nonparametric tests?
*) Is the order of the coverage one that I consider appropriate?
*) Is the writing clear and the examples easy to follow?
I am generally not impressed by a large number of exercises at the end of sections and chapters. At times, I think that authors believe they are in some form of "arms race" in adding more and more exercises, many of which will never be read let alone solved by the majority of students.
This book passes all three of my decision criteria. The sign, Wilcoxson, Kruskal-Wallis, rank correlation and runs nonparametric tests are all covered in chapter 11. The order of coverage is well within my preferences and the examples are easy to follow. Answers to the odd numbered exercises are included in an appendix.
I have not yet made a decision regarding what book to use in my basic statistics course, as I have not yet examined all of my options. However, I certainly would be very comfortable using this book and I am sure my students would feel the same way.
