Observers of the Net have long considered e-mail the medium's killer application. The Eng@ged Customer, by Hans Peter Brondmo, shows why this may be even more relevant for e-commerce endeavors of the future--and sets out various ways that it can be utilized to develop "profitable, loyal and engaged" consumers today. "Whether you're sending individual customers their stock portfolio update at the end of each trading day, writing a gossip column on the music industry, sending special offers or promotions, publishing an industry newsletter, sending a purchase confirmation, or running a gift reminder-and-product-suggestion service, e-mail marketing can do the job," writes Brondmo, founder of a firm that has helped design and implement such programs for companies ranging from Amtrak to Victoria's Secret. A section illustrating how e-mail can foster the "age-old principles [of] personal service and communication" to more fully engage customers, and one with speculations on the future implications of the practice, are sandwiched around the meat of Brondmo's book: specifics on using e-mail to acquire, convert, and retain real business. The highly detailed advice, consistently delivered with the necessary sensitivity to spam, privacy, and other concerns, should prove instructive to executives and managers at every level. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

In the age of the Internet, how do you keep your customers coming back--again and again--when your competitors are always just one click away? How do you turn casual, anonymous surfers into profitable, "engaged" customers?

The answers to these questions can be found in The Eng@ged Customer, written by Hans Peter Brondmo, one of the Internet's best known and most successful direct marketing experts. In this new marketing classic Brondmo introduces readers to the new rules of Internet direct marketing and shows them how to use email to build service rather than marketing relationships.

A visionary in both the technology and marketing arenas, Brondmo has shown more company executives than anyone how to build lasting, profitable, one-on-one relationships with customers on the Internet. His client list includes such household names as Palm, Hewlett-Packard, Victoria's Secret, Amtrak, Wells Fargo Bank, OfficeMax, Wegmans Food Markets, as well as such Internet leaders as CDNow, E-Trade Women.com, Petopia.com, Sparks.com, and eBags.com.

The Eng@ged Customer makes Brondmo's expertise available to executives, managers, and marketers in both Old and New Economy businesses. The book combines a strategic perspective with tactical guidance, showing where and how to invest in order to build an Internet direct marketing program, and how to plan, develop, and implement your program for maximum success.

While sending email messages to customers may sound like a simple process, retailers and marketers all over the world have discovered just how difficult it is to do it well. Let Brondmo show you how to

Whether you are an executive or a manager, The Eng@ged Customer will show you:

2 out of 5 stars Rather Outdated.......2005-05-28

The book is a decent read for those who aren't familiar with online marketing at all, but if the reader has any experience, they will find this to be a waste of their time.

Most of the examples used in the book seem like they were pulled out of 1999. Most online consumers are sick on marketing filling up their email inboxes. Even those that the customer originally expressed interest in become a chore.

At this point in time, Blogs and RSS feeds should be a new focus of online marketing.

If you are interested in email marketing, I recommend Permission Marketing by Seth Godin instead -- his work is excellent.

1 out of 5 stars The New Rules...of the really obvious........2004-09-08

OK, the book was published in 2000. But it still seems to me that if you call your book "The New Rules..." they ought to be somewhat useful and somewhat timeless. Unfortunately, the "rules" in this book are neither. For example "The e-customer expects to be in control." Well, yah...but so has every customer in recorded history. Auto dealers get a bad rap when they obviously and purposely deny any sense of control. In later chapters we get tips like "Don't send unsolicted messages." Even (back) in 2000 (several years after the first successful anti-SPAM lawsuits) this was a no brainer. Instead, check out Shapiro's "Control Revolution" -- written a year earlier (1999) it's still relevant. If you're new to the discipline and haven't already, check out "Permission Marketing" or "Cluetrain Manifesto." They too provide a sense of history...and a lot more insight.

5 out of 5 stars A real and ethical plan for internet marketing and not spam.......2002-02-28

The authors have put together perhaps one of the best and most complete books on marketing via e-mail on the market today. Note that I said "marketing via e-mail" and not spamming via e-mail. The authors actually address this issue and how to use e-mail marketing in a positive manner where it will be welcomed by the recipient and not instantly deleted. Hans Peter Brondmo is an authority on this issue and is one of the owners of Post Communications, which uses e-mail marketing extensively.

The book details how to move from traditional marketing methods to an Internet based marketing system that concentrates on the efficient and positive use of e-mail. It not only covers how to use it to obtain new customers but guides the reader step by step in how to effectively use e-mail to create and maintain customer loyalty and positive relationships.

3 out of 5 stars This books wraps up other online marketing concepts........2001-12-21

I have read many books on e-mail strategies, viral marketing and permission-based marketing and this one makes the cut.

I figured by reading the book I would get some pretty good analysis of what it takes to run a good e-mail marketing campaign, the pros and cons of various strategies (in house vs. outsourcing) and some "big picture" issues to deal with. The author delivered on that but I wish he had some # crunching and data analysis in it.

If you have read about permission based marketing and viral marketing this is a book that will help to "pull it all together." While some concepts will have been covered by then I know it has helped me in pulling together a strategy long-term for a few websites I want to rollout in the next few years.

Good books to read about viral marketing, in order of preference, are (1) Seth Godin and Permission Marketing (2) Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point and (3) Emanueul Rosen's Anatomy of a Buzz. Kim McPherson's E-mail Strategies That Work book is a good book on e-mail campaigns.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book Available on Email Marketing.......2001-08-29

The Engaged Customer is, in my view, the best book available on email marketing. Hans Peter Brondmo is a top expert and he pours out his knowledge on every page. Even more, it is well written and keeps your interest.

    Book Description

Avinash Dixit and Joseph Stiglitz revolutionized the modelling of imperfectly competitive markets and launched "the second monopolistic competition revolution". Experts in the areas of macroeconomics, international trade theory, economic geography, and international growth theory examine the success of the second revolution in this collection of papers. They reveal what appears to be "missing" and look forward to the next step in the modelling of imperfectly competitive markets. The text includes a comprehensive survey of the two monopolistic competition revolutions, and previously unpublished working papers by Dixit and Stiglitz that led to their famous 1977 paper.

    Download Description

In 1977 a seminal paper was published by Avinash Dixit and Joseph Stiglitz that revolutionized the modeling of imperfectly competitive markets. It launched what might be called the second monopolistic competition revolution which has been far more successful than the first one, initiated by Edward Chamberlin and Joan Robinson in the 1930s. In this collection of original essays experts in the fields of macroeconomics, international trade theory, economic geography, and international growth theory address the question of why the second revolution was so successful. They also highlight what is missing, and look forward to the next step in the modeling of imperfectly competitive markets. The text includes a comprehensive survey of both monopolistic competition revolutions, and previously unpublished working papers by Dixit and Stiglitz that led to their famous 1977 paper. With original contributions from Dixit, Ethier, Neary and Stiglitz amongst others, this collection will excite interest amongst researchers, advanced students and economists.

          Description:
Empirically, demand and market size effects play an important role for international trade in assets and the determination of asset prices. Financial integration decreases the cost of capital, asset prices increase with investors base and market size determines international financial flows. We present a two-country model with an endogenous number of financial assets, where the interaction of a risk diversification motive and market segmentation explains those facts. In our set up, an imperfectly competitive structure of financial markets emerges naturally and provides a new source for home bias in equity holdings. Due to co-ordination failures, the extent of financial market incompleteness is inefficiently high in equilibrium.

            Description:
With international externalities, different country sizes, imperfect competition, and trade costs, tax competition for mobile firms is efficiency-enhancing with respect to the free market outcome. Under both scenarios, the resulting inefficiencies in international specialization and trade flows vanish when trade costs are low enough. Otherwise, only international tax coordination can implement the efficient spatial distribution of firms.

              Description:
In this paper, I show that the increasing similarity in GDPs among OECD country pairs leads to higher bilateral trade to GDP ratios. This finding provides some support for the prediction of Helpman [J. Jpn. Int. Econ. 1 (1987) 62], whose model explains intra-industry trade that is prevalent among developed countries. I also show that Helpman's prediction is rejected for non-OECD countries, among which intra-industry trade is not critical. This result contrasts with the findings of Hummels-Levinsohn [Q. J. Econ. 110 (1995) 799], which play an important role in the debate about whether or not New Trade Theory explains international trade patterns at the country level.

                Description:
We develop a two-factor, three-sector model of international trade in which there are cross-country technological differences in the monopolistically competitive sector. Firms in one country have a technology with high fixed costs and low marginal costs; firms in the other country have a technology with low fixed but high marginal costs. Under this model, although not under the monopolistically competitive model with identical technologies, trade patterns are determined by the interaction between the distribution of factor endowments (i.e., the Heckscher-Ohlin aspect) and technological differences in the monopolistically competitive sector (i.e., the Chamberlinian-Ricardian aspect). Furthermore, we show that autarky commodity prices are not very useful for predicting trade patterns, which is counterintuitive and again contrary to findings under the monopolistically competitive model with identical technologies.

                  Description:
This paper broadens the protection for sale model of Grossman and Helpman (1994) by incorporating the Krugman-Dixit-Stiglitz model of monopolistic competition, given its importance in explaining the prevalence of intraindustry trade. Several new results arise in this paper. First, the endogenous import tariff will never fall below zero, even in unorganized sectors. Second, the endogenous export policy for organized sectors is not necessarily an export subsidy, and can be an export tax as in unorganized sectors. Third, the level of import protection varies inversely with the degree of import penetration, regardless of whether the sector is organized or not.

                      Description:
We study international transmissions and welfare implications of monetary shocks in a two-country world with multiple stages of production and multiple border-crossings of intermediate goods. This empirically relevant feature is important, as it has opposite implications for two external spillover effects of a unilateral monetary expansion. If all production and trade are assumed to occur in a single stage, the conflict-of-interest terms-of-trade effect tends to dominate the common-interest efficiency-improvement effect for reasonable parameter values, so that the international welfare effects would depend in general on the underlying assumptions about the currencies of price setting. The stretch of production and trade across multiple stages of processing magnifies the efficiency-improvement effect and dampens the terms-of-trade effect. Thus, a monetary expansion can be mutually beneficial regardless of its source or the pricing assumptions.

This is an intriguing analytical summary of the major political, economic, and social trends in Mexico. Whether one agrees or disagrees with the author's scenarios or conclusions, there is a lot to learn here and ponder over. If decisionmakers can read only one book on Mexico, MEXICO 2005 would be an excellent choice.

Once in every decade, an author produces a book that provokes debate and sheds light on a topic analyzed from an entirely fresh perspective. Mike Mazarr's Mexico 2005 is just such a book. This work approaches Mexico through a challenging and articulate framework of six global trends, ranging from the changing allocation of human resources to that of human psychology. The author concludes with a series of probable, controversial scenarios in 2005. The book is rich in insights and piques the reader's interest at every turn of the page. Mazarr's lucid writing and wide-ranging, eclectic themes will appeal to students, academics, the business community, government officials, and the media. Anyone interested in Mexico today and Mexico in the 21st century should read this book.

                        Book Description

Building civil society and nurturing democracy has become part of mainstream development discourse. But while some NGOs are taking the lead in this work, others still lack the skills needed to assume new roles in policy advocacy for social and economic justice. Advocacy for Social Justice is a direct and interactive response to this growing need.

Based on a legacy of experience from the Advocacy Institute and Oxfam America, this volume is the first comprehensive guide for worldwide social and economic justice advocates. Intended for the practitioner, trainer, teacher and student of activism, it explores the elements of advocacy and offers a toolkit for taking action, comprehensive case studies, as well as hundreds of resource listings.

                          Book Description

Bestselling author Bill McKibben turns activist in the first hands-on guidebook to stopping climate change, the world's greatest threat Hurricane Katrina. A rapidly disappearing Arctic. The warmest winter on the East Coast in recorded history. The leading scientist at NASA warns that we have only ten years to reverse climate change; the British government's report on global warming estimates that the financial impact will be greater than the Great Depression and both world wars-combined. Bill McKibben, the author of the first major book on global warming, The End of Nature, warns that it's no longer time to debate global warming, it's time to fight it. Drawing on the experience of Step It Up, a national day of rallies held on April 14, McKibben and the Step It Up team of organizers provide the facts of what must change to save the climate and show how to build the fight in your community, church, or college. They describe how to launch online grassroots campaigns, generate persuasive political pressure, plan high-profile events that will draw media attention, and other effective actions. This essential book offers the blueprint for a mighty new movement against the most urgent challenge facing us today.

5 out of 5 stars Global Development: A Reference Handbook.......2000-07-17

Savitt and Bottorf have done a valuable service for the discipline of development economics, first for compiling a comprehensive set of resources in the field and second for making it accessible to the beginner as well as to the expert.

The authors offer a concise introduction to development, including its history and economic principles. Those with an interest in the role of women and development will not be disappointed with the treatment of issues in that area.

Particularly valuable to the researcher are the reference sections, including a chronology, biographical sketches of some of the most notable figures in development, facts and statistics, organizations, an selected print and nonprint resources.

This book is an excellent reference and an essential item on the shelf of every scholar - or nonscholar - who is interested in the plight of the poor throughout the world.

                              Book Description

Written by over 20 leading international economists, this book offers "win-win" scenarios to economic problems. As in the other volumes of this set of public policy handbooks, the Handbook of Global Economic Policy employs a unique organizational principle: from viewing economic problems from conservative and liberal perspectives, to developing practical, non-ideological solutions to the problems, and finally testing the solution's feasibility in terms of economic, administrative, political, psychological, legal, international, and technological obstacles. The authors confront conventional wisdom about tradeoffs between unemployment and inflation, economic growth and displaced workers, and capitalism and socialism.

                                Book Description

The first Handbook of original articles by leading scholars of global environmental politics, this landmark volume maps the latest theoretical and empirical research in this young and growing field. Captured here are the dynamic and energetic debates over concerns for the health of the planet and how they might best be addressed. The introductory chapters explore the intellectual trends and evolving parameters in the field of global environmental politics. They make a case for an expansive definition of the field, one that embraces an interdisciplinary literature on the connections between global politics and environmental change. The remaining chapters are divided into three broad themes - states, governance and security; capitalism, trade and corporations; and knowledge, civil societies and ethics - with each section providing a cohesive discussion of current issues. In-depth explorations are given to topics such as: global commons, renewable energy, the effectiveness of environmental cooperation, regulations and corporate standards, trade liberalization and global environmental governance, and science and environmental citizenship. A comprehensive survey of the latest research, the Handbook is a necessary reference for scholars, students and policymakers in the field of global environmental politics.
