Save your money. Has some good ideas about using 3 1/2 inch floppies instead of the aging 5 1/4's

2 out of 5 stars A good source for further places to look.......1998-09-04

The book is well organized and provides useful sources for further information but beyond that the material is very dated. The book mentions that CD-Roms are in their infancy and focuses mainly on DOS programs.

              Book Description

During the 1970s and early 1980s, the Middle East and North Africa were perceived as being exceptionally successful, but now the region is viewed as a resounding economic and social failure. Islam is not only a religion, but also a political and social project. A major pretext of this work is to demonstrate how the tensions within Islamic movements feed directly into the economic, social, political, historical and religious arena of the region, and vice versa. An introductory chapter sets the context of the book. The core chapters of the book comprise an in-depth examination of the varied forms of oil revenue abuse. For examples, the past mismanagement of the tremendous wealth provided by oil. Following Islamic beliefs, revenue from oil should not finance wasteful consumption, but used instead for public welfare. Abstaining from interest calculations, there should be a case for keeping more oil in the ground. Indeed, oil has also stifled industrial development, and with declining oil revenues, the conflict between civilian and military priorities intensifies. While western interests have promoted arms spending, high population-growth expenditure reinforces the reality of the count-down to the post-oil era upon the Middle Eastern and North African oil exporters. So far the governments seem unwilling or unable to adapt and react. Furthermore, in the past oil has been used as a substitute for democracy. While the large oil revenues of the 1970s and early 1980s strengthened the position of autocratic rulers and weakened the private sector, repressive regimes have made Islam a source of criticism and opposition for the Western world. Following on from this, the book then looks forward to the problem of uniting the divergent interests in the spheres of oil and Islam into a cohesive whole. The book proposes that ideally Islamic governments would synchronise the depletion of oil reserves with investment in new productive assets. Islamic governments could also find ways to combine private, domestic and foreign interests in the oil industry. The main readership for this book will be policy-makers and professionals involved in development issues for Middle Eastern and North African affairs, and those with an interest in oil politics and Islamic studies.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Research without any biases.......2004-04-03

Professor Noreng has done a great service to both Muslims and Non Muslims by writing this book. It offers great insights into Islam, muslim history, business and culture. The common thread linking all these diverse topics is oil wealth.

Professor Noreng presents the facts as they are, and offers detailed refernces to back them up. He does not engage in any finger pointing, blame game, and things of that nature. His book follows the phiolosphy of these are the facts, thess are my interpretations and judgements, but feel free to make your own judgement.

I am a born muslim. Even I learned a lot about Islam after reading this book. The Economics of Oil is dealt superbly. Remarkable book.

4 out of 5 stars Good background on current affairs.......2004-02-09

Has obvious relevance after September 2001, and with US forces now in Iraq and Afghanistan. The author shows how oil has been a very mixed blessing in Muslim countries. While producing great wealth, this has sometimes been unevenly distributed through the originating countries. And in cases like Saudi Arabia and Brunei, it was used to put off democracy by providing material benefits, that at least arguably were received by most of the population.

As an aside, it was through the industrialisation of Saudi Arabia, and many government contracts for this, that Osama bin Laden amassed much of his wealth, which then bankrolled his later activities. Though the book, written in 1997, of course does not mention him, as he was an obscure figure then.

The author also discusses Iraq, with almost half the world's proven resources. Here, the oil managed to pay for twenty years of war and internal repression. The consequences of which are still unfolding daily.

A good background primer on current political affairs.

                Book Description

The Islamic revolution of 1979 heralded an expanded economic role for the Iranian state in safeguarding the revolution's redistributive aims. However, the Iranian economy in the 1980s and 1990s deteriorated markedly, and the state's enlarged role in the economy has been accompanied by acute macroeconomic instability and a sharp decline in the standard of living. This book of original essays identifies the principal issues, social, economic, and political, that have shaped and determined Iran's economic performance since the revolution.

                        Book Description

This book examines the interaction of politics and economics in Turkey. Applying the new political economy and public choice economics, it shows how politicians manipulate the economy for their own ends, for example by using fiscal and monetary policy, and by timing elections to coincide with periods of relative prosperity. It goes on to show the impact of all this on the Turkish economy, arguing that political manipulation has taken the economy from its natural course, and brought about unoptimality and disequilibrium, for example in the form of growing government expenditure, ever increasing public debt, chronic economic and political crises, and inflation. It argues that politico-economic interaction in Turkey is different from in Western democracies, and that Turkish democracy is different from Western democracy. It goes on to propose how political manipulation of the economy might be moderated, for example through increased privatisation, central bank independence, and a more robust relationship with international financial institutions. Understanding fully economics and politics in Turkey, and the interaction between them, is of critical importance as Turkey's accession to the European Union is negotiated.

I admit, I'm biased. I am a co-editor of Kordofan Invaded, and I think it is a wonderful book. I urge everyone interested in Sudan, and especially Kordofan, to check out the book. You'll be fascinated.

                            Book Description

This book is about the laissez-faire strategy for economic development, a strategy inspired by neoclassical/mainstream economics, advocated by the "Washington Consensus", and implemented by the Bretton Woods institutions.

Mainstream economics has taken legitimacy from the historical failure of command economies. But this view has not been balanced by an examination of the performance of laissez-faire economies, the closest to the pure market model. Lebanon provides a unique test case in this regard.

The book assesses Lebanon's development during 1948-2002, including its industrial and financial performance. The dynamics of the laissez-faire system is separately studied from a Post-Keynesian perspective, highlighting institutional behavior. It is found that laissez-faire is not a sufficient condition for economic development, and can even be counterproductive.

Toufic Gaspard's A Political Economy of Lebanon 1948-2002 is a masterpiece analysis on political economy and development in Lebanon. This thoroughly researched work enriched by Gaspard's long experience in economics has yet to be matched in the field.
Gaspard offers an alternative perspective on the weakness of the Lebanese Economy saying that this weakness has more to do with the economic and political structure of the nation rather than mere government policies. According to Gaspard, Lebanon's founding fathers based their young nation on the ideology of laissez faire economy, which despite displaying some positive figures in the past, was inherently weak and doomed to collapse sooner or later. Instead, Gaspard said that the instances that witnessed strong economic performance in Lebanon should have been invested in developing the industrial sector that would in turn create skilled labor as opposed to the country's current semi-skilled and unskilled laborers at the time the skilled among them emigrate.
Gaspard argues that Lebanon witnessed some favorable instance in history were it was possible to move to industrialization: During the late 19th century when an inflow of French capital invested in the country's then booming textile industry that later demised and during the years of WWII and later the Korean crisis when the shortage in Western imports and capital follow into the country for the support of allied troops and other purposes put Lebanon in favorable situation to industrialize. Such models where tested in Asian countries known later as Asian Tigers after they scored remarkable economic development in post-industrialization periods.
Yet Lebanon's founders and successive governments never allowed this option to crystallize and preferred, time and gain, the laissez faire model which ultimately proved its failure.
The book's introduction is particularly enlightening as it compares the different schools of world economies saying that mere fact that the United States economy displayed strength in the 1990s is not enough to prove that laissez faire economies lead to better economic development. He believes that time would later tell whether this model was successful or not and whether the world needs to reconsider some form of government intervention in planning their nations' economies.
