      Book Description

This brilliant new book by one of Europe's leading social thinkers throws light on the global power games being played out between global business, nation states and movements rooted in civil society. Beck offers an illuminating account of the changing nature of power in the global age and assesses the influence of the ever-expanding counter-powers. The author puts forward the provocative thesis that in an age of global crises and risks, a politics of golden handcuffs - the creation of a dense network of transnational interdependencies - is exactly what is needed in order to regain national autonomy, not least in relation to a highly mobile world economy. It is imperative that the maxim of nation-based realpolitik - that national interests have necessarily to be pursued by national means - be replaced by the maxim of cosmopolitan realpolitik. The more cosmopolitan our political structures and activities, Beck suggests, the more successful they will be in promoting national interests, and the greater our individual power in this global age will be.

        Book Description

As the twentieth century draws to a close and the rush to globalization gathers momentum, political and economic considerations are crowding out vital ethical questions about the shape of our future. Now, Hans Kung, one of the world's preeminent Christian theologians, explores these issues in a visionary and cautionary look at the coming global society. How can the new world order of the twenty first century avoid the horrors of the twentieth? Will nations form a real community or continue to aggressively pursue their own interests? Will the Machiavellian approaches of the past prevail over idealism and a more humanitarian politics? What role can religion play in a world increasingly dominated by transnational corporations? Kung tackles these and many other questions with the insight and moral authority that comes from a lifetime's devotion to the search for justice and human dignity. Arguing against both an amoral realpolitik and an immoral resurgence of laissez faire economics, Kung defines a comprehensive ethic founded on the bedrock of mutual respect and humane treatment of all beings that would encompass the ecological, legal, technological, and social patterns that are reshaping civilization. If we are going to have a global economy, a global technology, a global media, Kung argues, we must also have a global ethic to which all nations, and peoples of the most varied backgrounds and beliefs, can commit themselves. "The world," he says, "is not going to be held together by the Internet." For anyone concerned about the world we are creating, A Global Ethic for Global Politics and Economics offers equal measures of informed analysis, compassionate foresight, and wise counsel.

            Book Description

Increasing economic competition combined with the powerful threat of transnational activism are pushing firms to develop new political strategies. Over the past decade a growing number of corporations have adopted policies of industry self-regulation—corporate codes of conduct, social and environmental standards, and auditing and monitoring systems. A Public Role for the Private Sector explores the phenomenon of industry self-regulation through three different cases—environment, labor, and information privacy—where corporate leaders appear to be converging on industry self-regulation as the appropriate response to competing pressures. Political and economic risks, reputational effects, and learning within the business community all influence the adoption of a self-regulatory strategy, but there are wide variations in the strength and character of it across industries and issue areas. Industry self-regulation raises significant questions about the place of the private sector in regulation and governance, and the accountability, legitimacy and power of industry at a time of rapid globalization.

            Book Description

A step-by-step review of the inner logic and values of the global market when it is viewed as a "total value system." McMurtry's explorations are powered by an interdisciplinary method that avoids specialized terminology or jargon. He employs easy-to-follow arguments and presents focused analyses while connecting market theory and practice in a unified understanding of the planetary threat of the "new world order."

4 out of 5 stars A critique of market ideology, with positive alternatives........1998-07-17

This is a very thoroughly researched book with an impassioned social message on money, ethics and human values. The author's arguments are complex and any serious critique of the author's arguments requires upon a reading and analysis of the book itself.

McMurtry is Professor of Philosoophy at University of Guelph and has been an active thinker and leader in analyzing and opposing the Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI). His book provides a comprehensive account of the economic and social history which underlie these modern trends, and the errors and problems involved.

The question of freedom and its nature is basic to life and society, and conventional market theory is very superficial and self-serving in this regard. The Market is an abstract entity with powers as formerly ascribed to God, and belief in market absolutes ("there is no alternative") is based upon ideologies and rationalizations not fully grounded in real-world human and ecological v! ! alues. The basic problem lies in a value system for which money (the services and goods it commands by social agreement) is seen as the only practical measure, and is treated as absolute. Values attached to meeting human needs for development and well-being, including sustainable ecology, are given short shrift.

The problems are deeper than those of class structures, for the values held do in fact condition views of what constitute reality itself. Minds are programmed by such values to perceive the system as commanded by nature as laws of nature and of God. However, the problem is not "human nature". It is rather the inertness and habituation of the mind, a condition that does not question or allow the reevaluation of socially conditioned and programmed values. People thinking within this closed order do not recognize what they are part of, and see things as "the way things are". Beliefs are seen not as values but as realities. Such value systems unde! ! rlie the global market. (In a similar way, theology underla! y the world view of the Middle Ages, and provided the logical ground and justification for procedures of the Inquisition.)

We may think that a value system goes wrong because there is a gap between what its proponents claim to adhere to as values, and what they in fact do. that is not the problem here. The problem is that the market metric does not include natural resources or human needs (as contrasted with economic demands) as values in its calculus. What the market designates as value is all that counts. Externalities and side-effects or human and ecological devastation are not considered.

The problem is, such is the trust in the "invisible hand", that relevant questions are not asked, not conprehended, and ruled out of order. Also, the global market is not the same as the classical capitalist market, and has little even in common with a *producer's* market.

The process of confining consciousness within the closed loop of a social value regime continures unt! ! il it is recognized to be in clear contradiction to reason and the senses. It is necessary, for survival, to open the old mind-set to question, in order to adjust to life realities that the value system has excluded from view.

McMurtry deals with many issues: the distinction between reality and representations; historical backgrounds; Adam Smith, John Locke and the development of economic theory and practice; the market and faith in its "invisible hand" as God; sin against market laws and punishments; money and private property; profit, competition and the socila good; free markets and democracy; market metaphysics (and true meanings); global markets and planetary health; the decoupling of capital from civil and environmental life; mutations of the profit systems and the logic of the world-system crisis; and the economics of life and death. Changes in the direction of life values are outlined.

In my view this is a book that deserves a lot of close attention and ! ! discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Seven Steps To Global Change.......2003-05-25

Wow, I bought this book at a library booksale, and read it probably 1 year later. I was very interested in meditation, peaceful resolution and such. This book is amazing, so full of absoloute wisdom and radically true assesments. I'm a college student and I have been copying this book and giving it away at school functions. Everyone who has children should read this book to find out how the world will end up without a positive personality to lead us through.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding and Concise Summary of Gandhi's Strategies.......2002-02-12

This little book is a gem! It explains in concise, understandable language the seven key steps to making a positive contribution to the world. The beauty of the book, besides its simplicity and readability, is its practical suggestions for steps that we, as individuals, can take starting today! Focussing on: 1) selfless service; 2) right and fair labor; 3) nonviolence; 4) conciliation; 5) sharing in government; 6) re-education and 7) the sharing of resources, De Mallac skillfully maps out Gandhi's steps to global change. The book also contains a very practical action guide on what we can do immediately to make a difference in these seven areas, including suggestions such as volunteering for groups like the American Friends Service Committe (selfless service) and "not letting a single day go by without practicing some form of giving" (sharing of resources). The Book is filled with pearls of wisdom and resources. It also contains Suggested Readings, a Gandhi Chronology, Goals for Contemporary American Personal and Political Action, and a Declaration of Interdependence - a statement reflecting Gandian values. I'm surprised that this book is not more widely circulated or used as a college text on Gandhian values and nonviolent activism. It should be required reading for anyone seeking to make the world a better, more peaceful place to live.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for a peaceful future.......2001-09-23

It is a small book but easily the single most important text I have ever read. A concise, clear depiction of the principles which motivated to Gandhi, and Dr. King like him, to commit their lives to peace. Unlike most books, De Mallac's appendix offers concrete ways in which to apply these principles and lists organziation devoted to non-violence. Every human should read it and integrate into their world view. NOW.

I will assign this book to my senior-level World Affairs class. It gives a timely and close-up look at both the structural causes of poverty and its human consequences. Jan Knippers Black integrates graphic detail with descriptions of larger trends. She has a good conceptual grasp of global trends and is not shy about directly linking poverty to the policies of corporations, national governments, and international financial institutions. Inequality in the Global Village is well written and organized in a way that will appeal to caring citizens.

                          Book Description

The rise of large economic regions rivaling the United States will challenge its competitive strength and ability to withstand cross-border economic turbulence--a challenge the U.S. has not faced in more than 50 years. To meet this challenge, American business leaders need a comprehensive understanding of the existing global economic and monetary system. It is that, plus an explanation of international economic trend analysis, that Schaefer's book provides. Based on key economic and financial indicators published weekly in The Economist, Schaefer integrates a discussion of established international economic concepts with actual economic and financial data, giving readers a system to evaluate current economic indicators and anticipate future trends. An important resource for professionals and academics in international finance and investment, and for corporate management operating on a global scale.

                              Book Description

The importance of country risk is underscored by the existence of several prominent country risk rating agencies. These agencies combine information regarding alternative measures of economic, financial and political risk into associated composite risk ratings. As the accuracy of such country risk measures is open to question, it is necessary to analyse the agency rating systems to enable an evaluation of the importance and relevance of agency risk ratings. The book focuses on the rating system of the international country risk guide. Time series data permit a comparative assessment of risk ratings for 120 countries, and highlight the importance of economic, financial and political risk ratings as components of a composite risk rating. The book analyses various univariate and multivariate risk returns and corresponding symmetric and asymmetric models of conditional volatility, as well as conditional correlations.

                                Book Description

Presented in this volume are various contributions on the functioning and the dynamics of the prescription drug markets. Key issues such as switching drugs from prescription to over the counter (OTC); regulation versus competition; the search and patent terms; international comparisons of innovation processes; and patterns of consumption are all discussed in the book. At a time when many challenges are happening in the industry (e.g. stronger American and Japanese competition, regulatory changes, pressure for more cost containment, and decline of innovation), the book provides useful analysis of some of these changes.

                                  Book Description

Public sector bureaucracies have been subjected to harsh criticism. One solution which has been widely adopted over the past two decades has been to 'unbundle government'-- that is to break down monolithic departments and Ministries into smaller, semi-autonomous, 'agencies'. These are often governed by some type of performance contract, are at 'arms length' or further from their 'parent' Ministry or Department and are freed from many of the normal rules governing civil service bodies.
This the first book to survey the 'why' and the 'how' of this epidemic of 'agencification', with case studies from every continent. From Japan to America and from Sweden to Tanzania, these 14 case studies (some covering more than one country) critically examine how such agencies have been set up and managed. The introductory chapter distils the main elements of the agencification movement. An international panel of contributors then move on to explore how this relates to other similar, structural changes to government; agencies, quangos and contracts; autonomization in continental Europe and Japan and autonomization in developing and transitional countries. The concluding section locates this change to agencification in a theoretical context, looking at how it has been explained by both policy-makers and academics.
This book will be essential reading for advanced students and researchers of public management.

International trade in agricultural products has increased six- fold in the past thirty years; this, accompanied by rapidly changing world markets, has created a demand for an up-to-date book on the economics of agricultural trade policies. With concise, easy-to-follow analysis, Elements of Agricultural Trade Policies introduces the typical protective trade policy schemes and mechanisms used by the major agricultural trading nations, both importers and exporters. In addition, it clearly describes the principles of comparative advantage and economic gains from trade. Houck presents analyses of such traditional strategies as tariffs and quotas, as well as such modern devices as market discrimination and export subsidies. He addresses exchange rates, preferential trading, and effective protection policies, putting special emphasis on partial equilibrium analysis of various trade policy schemes. Most important, by focusing on the economic forces and consequences associated with specific trade policies, irrespective of the nation imposing them or the product involved, this book remains current as time changes. Numerous diagrams, built on a flexible, uniform model that clearly illuminates the trade policies discussed are included. Researchers and policy makers with only limited economic training will find this volume packed with valuable ideas about virtually all major agricultural trade policy interventions.

5 out of 5 stars Short and to the point.......2001-02-10

Economics texts will never make for good bedtime reading, at least not for most of us. But Houck's book is remarkable in its thorough and brief overview of agricultural trade. All of the essential elements are here - tariffs, quotas, specialization, comparative advantage, subsidies, proportionality - as well as a look at how these tools apply to agricultural trade in particular. Minimal prior knowledge is assumed; Houck's explanations are substantial but accessible, straightforward but never dumbed down. As befits an introductory text, each chapter is amply supplied with suggestions for further reading. While it's not long on theory or depth, this book serves as an excellent reference for understanding the basic questions and problems of trade. Recommended for any intermediate economics student!

From the supplier: Many federal government officials believe there is no need to adopt significant changes in the 1995 Farm Bill, in light of the effectiveness of the 1990 Farm Bill. However, changes in the political environment, in farmers' needs and in the global market necessitate the incorporation of major alternations in the new Farm Bill. The changes should be made to increase federal agricultural insurance coverage as well as federal aid to agricultural research.
