3 out of 5 stars A Development & Testing Book, Not for Marketers .......2006-07-06

This book would be more accurately titled, "Managing Successful High-Tech Product Development and Testing" because that is the focus of the content. The broader corporate & marketing activities involved in a product launch are not covered at all. For this book's target audience of developers & testing managers, the content seems to provide an adequate introduction to activities & challenges.

"Our long history of economic power and wealth is being eroded from within," writes Addison Wiggin, and the result will be reduced foreign investment, slow foreign demand for U.S. goods, and unfavorable currency exchange rates. A heavy debt burden, the trade deficit, and structural imbalances have created an unstable dollar bubble, and according to Wiggin, it's not a matter of if the bubble will burst, but when. That's the bad news. The good news is that hidden investment opportunities are waiting behind the weakening dollar. In The Demise of the Dollar… and Why It's Great for Your Investments Wiggin offers advice to readers looking to capitalize on this reality; specifically, he encourages investing in precious metals, tangible resources, and some select foreign markets.

Along with investment advice, Wiggin provides a brief history of government and consumer spending habits and how they have changed over the past 200 years. In clear language, he states the reasons for the dollar's decline, and provides explanations of the forces behind inflation, modern corporate accounting and adjustment schemes, the parallels between corporate failures and government policies, the implications of the national debt and deficit spending, and the distinctions between productive and consumptive debt. He also discusses how foreign countries, particularly China, are ultimately in control of the U.S.'s economic fate due to the staggering amount of credit they have extended. Wiggin is highly critical of Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan's policies, particularly the massive shift from production to credit that he has espoused, and calls into question his efforts to manage the dollar's value. Of course, Greenspan was not working alone--every president since Ronald Reagan has embraced his views. Written for lay readers, The Demise of the Dollar offers a practical analysis of what the "twilight of the Great Dollar Standard Era" may bring. --Shawn Carkonen

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2007-09-24

Don't waste your time reading through the chapters. This author just repeats the same things over and over and ooover. Bash Greenspan, hail gold, and repeat... again and again. I have been close to throwing it out the window (or against a wall) many times, but -mistakenly- kept reading through it to the final chapter.

Save yourself the time waster. It just provides a little -very little- of economic background and then suggests to buy gold, CDs in other currencies, and short the dollar. If you really want to read it, just read chapter 8. If you're unsure, don't even buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Wig out with Addison Wiggin.......2007-01-16

Though not nearly as fun to read as Empire of Debt, it's an excellent read about the current state of affairs in the US. This is a no-nonsense, un-shellacked account of the US economy and answers some of those questions we all have floating around in our heads (such as: The media and government say the economy is doing great but why does it seem like I have less money to live on each year?) If you're feeling depressed lately, you may want to put this one aside for awhile. But if you desire to learn how to profit from the current US slide, pick it up.

1 out of 5 stars garbage.......2007-01-02

BS violates economics found in Rick Boettger's Deficit Lie, Economics Problem solver, 2 undergraduate crses and 2 graduate crses in econ, two graduate finance crses, and Jim Cramer's advice on investing in currencies i.e. bad idea/sure way to lose money. Finally why work to destroy America when by following the advice of real economists and other advisors you can improve America. Also tends to beat it to death.

4 out of 5 stars Can get a bit long-winded, but a good read.......2006-12-03

I found this book very interesting. Even though the author can go on and on about the same points, 1 year after this book was written, most things he predicts are correct.

Gold investments are up, the dollar is down, housing is slowing, and US manufacturing continues to go overseas.

This writing team likes to take a subject and work it into a full length book by repeating the same theme endlessly. They should have created a long magazine piece or a booklet, but as financial wizards they know where the money is. Nevertheless, this book and its subject may save you a fortune if the demise of the dollar occurs.

5 out of 5 stars An accurate assessment & a history lesson.......2006-02-01

This book, by far, hits the nail on the proverbial head. What Alan Greenspan wrote in 1966 (included in this book) is prophetic and sobering. What is unique is for someone to propose a logical, peaceful solution. Until now there have been theories and conjecture on what must occur or which tools are needed for the population to take back their economic freedom. This book shows you the tool and how to use it; a proven system, accepted by the majority of business owners, and fun to use. No academic hypothesis...this text contains the FACTS, the TOOLS and the IMPLEMENTATION. The rest is up to us!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all students of life........2005-10-22

To all my brothers and sisters on this earth as we know it. I truly feel that this book is a must read for everyone that has the ability to spend our so called money of today, that they may get a truly eye opening experience of what is real and not real in our monitary systems of today and protect their future from being stolen out from under them as their land is being stolen as we speak. Bernard is a Maverick and a great man among men.
Blessings Dr. Joseph

5 out of 5 stars I have read this book three times so far..........2005-10-22

Bernard vonNothaus has produced one of the best educational compilations regarding money, and specifically, the use of silver and gold as money.
With essays from luminaries such as Alan Greenspan, and G. Edward Griffin, vonNothaus presents a compelling case that our current monetary system is destined to the predictable busts historically associated with fiat currencies which have been foisted upon societies long past.
As the title states, this book provides a solution.
And the solution simply stated is that our economy can only be salvaged with the re-introduction of a commodity based currency as called for in the U.S. Constitution.
I have read this book three times so far. I am reading it for the fourth time, and I learn something new every time.

5 out of 5 stars Goldmine of information.......2004-03-05

About three years ago, while reading Otto Skinner's 'The Biggest "Tax Loophole" of All', I became aware of the phenomenon known as fractional reserve banking. Why is it a phenomenon? Essentially, fractional reserve banking is the ability to create money out of thin air. Or more accurately, the license to create money out of thin air. Black's Law Dictionary defines "license" as, "The permission by competent authority to do an act which without such permission, would be illegal." But it isn't the people doing this. It is the bankers courtesy of the Federal Reserve Act. People like the Rockefellers, Nelson W. Aldrich, J.P. Morgan and Paul Warburg. This books goes into the details. Fantastic information explaining the history of money, where the national debt comes from, why statists depise gold and silver and suggestions on what you can do about the problem of fiat currency. I, above all things, stopped using Federal Reserve Notes and credit cards and started using the Liberty Dollar. I signed up as an associate two years ago. It has been a fun and informative journey. I also have met Bernard von NotHaus on several occassions.

    Book Description

The U.S. dollar has served as the key currency of the international economic/financial system for over fifty years. This study assesses the proposition that the series of U.S. current-account deficits over the last twenty years will shortly exhaust the capability of the dollar to continue as the key currency. The evidence in support of the proposition is strong. The implications of exhaustion will be serious and need to be addressed quickly.

      Book Description

The paradoxical behavior of the dollar since 1980 poses a challenge to standard models of open economy macroeconomics. Using the dollar as a fulcrum, the original essays in this book discuss the causes of the dramatic shifts in the dollar's exchange value during the past decade and the effect of these fluctuations on the economies of the United States, Japan, Europe, and the developing nations, as well as its impact on theories of international economics.

Stefan Gerlach and Peter Petri address the causes of the dollar's extreme rise and sudden fall in the 1980s and speculate on how the cycle changed theories of trade, exchange rate determination, and international capital markets. James Tobin's debunking of myths about the dollar has important implications for the future course of U.S. economic policy, while Rachel McCulloch provides an overview of the remarkable events of the past decade. Paul Krugman points out how the experience highlights the bankruptcy of current theories of integration of goods and financial markets. Peter Garber urges caution in interpreting the fluctuations in the dollar as due to a speculative bubble. Several contributors offer exciting new ideas to be formalized and tested. These include structural breaks, asymmetries, and ratchets, addressed by Richard Baldwin and Charles Kindleberger, and the corporate response to the dollar, analyzed by Robert Aliber and by Ruyhei Wakasugi. Charles Wyplosz discusses the impact of the dollar on Europe, and Stefen Gerlach reviews the relationship between the dollar and its fundamentals. In the book's final essay, Peter Petri describes the impacts of the dollar cycle on the developing countries.

Stefan Gerlach is Assistant Professor of Economics in the Lemberg Program in International Economics and Finance at Brandeis University.

Peter A. Petri is Professor of Economics at Brandeis, Director of the Lemberg Program, and consultant to the World Bank.

From the supplier: Economic growth in the 1990s is characterized by a steady but sluggish upward trend which is only benefitting the rich and keeping the underprivileged down. The economic policy fostered by Alan Greenspan intends to dampen the rate of growth so as to prolong it by putting a check on wage increases while allowing corporate profits to rise freely. By doing so, Greenspan wanted to keep interest rates down and limit employment to avoid inflationary pressures. Nonetheless, his economic policy is biased against the poor.
