3 out of 5 stars Mail Order.......2001-06-26

This book covers some of the basics in the mail order business. The author uses many examples from his own mail order business. He gives advice on: inexpensive publicity releases, obtaining a mailing list, zoning laws and producing or sourcing your products. This book gives hope to those who want to start a mail order business.

2 out of 5 stars An okay reference, but not comprehensive........1998-09-04

The main emphasis on this book seems to be on making money by direct mail... sending out letters for a product, posting ads in newspapers, etc. It does cover other aspects, but I am left with many questions I wish were answered.

    Book Description

Since the 1997 Asian financial crisis, countries in East Asia have made efforts to promote regional monetary and financial cooperation to complement the evolving international financial architecture. This increased interest in regional monetary and financial cooperation has resulted in several initiatives - the ASEAN Surveillance Process, the ASEAN+3 Finance Ministers Process including its Chiang Mai Initiative of 2000, the Manila Framework Group and the Asia-Europe Finance Ministers Process to name a few. These developments in some ways represent a significant break from the past. Going forward the key challenge is how to set priorites and sequence developments so as to smooth the path to a new regional financial architecture. This two-volume set takes up the issue of developing a road map of policy options, both at the regional and country levels, for carrying forward the ongoing efforts in monetary and financial cooperation in East Asia. Building on a series of core reports and background papers by eminent economists and policymakers around the world commissioned under an ADB technical assistance project, the books explore what is feasible and desirable in regional monetary and financial cooperation and lays out a road map for putting the concept into action over the next several years. Volume 1 contains an overview by Peter Montiel, and three core studies by Olam Chaipravat, Eric Girardin, and Takatoshi Ito and Yung-Chul Park. Volume 2 contains background papers by Robert J. Barro; Elbliogonore Boiscuvier and Alfred Steinherr; Barry Eichengreen; Jeffrey A. Frankel; Eric Girardin; Jong-Wha Lee; Yung-Chul Park and Kwanho Shin; Ronald McKinnon; Eiji Ogawa, Takatoshi Ito, and Yuri Nagataki Sasaki; Ramkishen Rajan and Reza Siregar; Yunjong Wang and Wing Thye Woo; and Charles Wyplosz. The volumes and the study on which they were based were conceptualized, supervised, and coordinated by Pradumna B. Rana and Srinivasa Madhur.

      Book Description

This book situates the evolution of the high growth economies along Asia's Pacific Rim after the Second World War within broader global political and economic changes. Specifically, it charts the growth of capitalist economies in the region throughout periodic crises and successive waves of restructuring, and links changes in the world economy to shifts in the domestic political economies of East and Southeast Asia. It suggests that the financial crisis of 1997-98 laid the basis for a new phase of regional economic integration in Pacific-Asia.

      Key issues examined include:
      * comparison of patterns of state intervention and industrial organization in individual countries
      * history of US power in the region
      * analysis of class and state-society relations
      * how shifts in regional dynamics can effect changes in the world economy

Through this detailed analysis of regional economic growth and integration since 1945, Capitalist Restructuring and the Pacific Rim concludes that the continued accumulation of capital in East and Southeast Asia is undermining the material foundations of US power.

This comprehensive survey of the emergence of Asia's Pacific Rim will intrigue and inform scholars of Asian Studies, Sociology and Development Studies alike.

          Book Description

The increased mobility and volume of international capital flows is a striking trend in international finance. While countries worldwide have engaged in financial deregulation, nowhere is this pattern more pronounced than in East Asia, where it has affected in unanticipated ways the behavior of exchange rates, interest rates, and capital flows.

In these thirteen essays, American and Asian scholars analyze the effects of financial deregulation and integration on East Asian markets. Topics covered include the roles of the United States and Japan in trading with Asian countries, macroeconomic policy implications of export-led growth in Korea and Taiwan, the effects of foreign direct investment in China, and the impact of financial liberalization in Japan, Korea, and Singapore.

Demonstrating the complexity of financial deregulation and the challenges it poses for policy makers, this volume provides an excellent picture of the overall status of East Asian financial markets for scholars in international finance and Asian economic development.

            Book Description

Financial Intergration in East Asia explains the different methods economists use to assess how open a country's financial system is to domestic and international influences, and applies these tests to ten countries in East Asia. It explains how a country that has an open financial system differs from one that is controlled. It explains what happened in East Asia in 1997/98 and reviews the costs and benefits of open financial markets. While it has appeal for the technical reader, the book uses ordinary language and emphasizes economic intuition. The topic is relatively new and fundamentally important to the way governments and markets work in East Asia.

            Download Description

Financial Integration in East Asia examines the degree of domestic and financial openness in ten Asian countries (Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand) and the effect financial openness has on the structure of the macroeconomy. After examining the reasons behind the 1997/98 financial crisis, Dr de Brouwer puts these in context by summarising the literature on the costs and benefits of financial reform. He then assesses the information that interest rate parity conditions have for financial openness, and sets out theoretical and empirical models to explore the link between market interest rates and intermediated interest rates on deposits and loans. Financial Integration in East Asia also contains reviews of the literature and regional developments, with clear policy analysis throughout. Financial Integration in East Asia is the latest title in the distinguished Cambridge series Trade and Development.

              Book Description

The widespread capital market liberalization has resulted in a massive surge in international capital flows and the development of a more integrated world financial system. At the same time, however, the volatility of capital flows has increased and the stability of this modern financial system has been called into question by a number of financial and currency crises.

In this volume the authors assess the behavior of international capital markets during this period, focusing on both the causes and the consequences of financial instability. They examine the origins of the Latin American and East Asian crises and the lessons that can be drawn from these, and they consider the proposals for reform of the international financial system which have followed.

This collection of papers, written by both academics and practitioners, is addressed both to specialists and to a wider audience, and will provide insight into an extremely important global development.

                  Description:
Before the Asian financial crisis broke out in 1997, few would have seriously argued for the creation of a system of regional financial cooperation in East Asia. Only a market-led integration process was taking place in East Asia. However, the financial crisis that erupted in 1997 was a major financial breakdown that gave East Asians a strong impetus to search for a regional mechanism that could forestall future crises. This search is currently gathering momentum and opening the door to possibly significant policy-led integration in East Asia. This paper aims to provide a view on the current process and future prospects for regional financial cooperation and integration in East Asia. Monetary cooperation in East Asia will be a long process that requires building collective institutions in the beginning. A major hindrance to a monetary union in East Asia is the region's lack of historical experience in regionalism. Whatever economic benefits a monetary union may bring, they are unlikely to be realized in the near future if each country is unwilling to cooperate in the political arena.

                    Description:
This paper estimates the degree of consumption risk sharing and analyzes the channels of consumption risk sharing among the 10 East Asian countries. Estimation results show that a bulk of cross-sectional variance of GDP, about 80 percent, is not smoothed within the region which suggests that the degree of consumption risk sharing is far from complete and very low in the region. Capital markets play a minimal role and credit markets provide a positive but limited role. These results imply that the market channels do not function well in smoothing idiosyncratic output shocks. To be consistent, we also found that the potential welfare gains from consumption risk sharing within East Asia are quite large. Compared to the OECD countries, the degree of risk sharing achieved is lower and the potential gains are larger in the East Asian countries, but the degree of risk sharing and the potential gains are similar in relatively more developed East Asian countries.

                                      Book Description

China is going through an almost unprecedented phase in its recent history. It is trying to build an internationally competitive future, while still holding on to its socialist past. Forms of economic organization are changing accordingly. In 1987, the Chinese government introduced the Shareholding Cooperative System (SHCS) as a bridge between collectivism and the inevitable trend towards privatization.

Based on a study carried out between 1995 and 1997, the authors evaluate the consequences of the SHCS for rural enterprises. They shed light on changes in property structures, management practices, profit sharing, participation in decision making and interference by local government, and how these affect workers' satisfaction and motivation.

The study shows there is little uniformity in the way existing collective shareholding enterprises are shaped. The authors argue that it is essentially this feature of the SHCS which has contributed to its successful spread and acceptance. Some problem areas remain to be addressed, however, and the study offers a number of recommendations.

                                        Book Description

The primary audience for this report is managers involved with the highest levels of the strategic planning process, and consultants who help their clients with this task. The user will not only benefit from the hundreds of hours that went into the methodology and its application, but also from its alternative perspective on strategic planning in China.

This report helps executives evaluate strategic investment and entry alternatives in China. In order to evaluate China, Icon Group International, Inc. draws on a methodology developed by Professor Philip Parker at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. The methodology decomposes a country's strategic potential along two key dimensions: (1) latent demand, and (2) accessibility. A country may have very high latent demand, yet have low accessibility, making it a less attractive market than many smaller potential countries having higher levels of accessibility.

This report provides a strategic profile of China along these lines. Throughout the discussion, literally hundreds of statistics on China are benchmarked against regional and global averages. The reader can thus quickly understand where China fits into the regional and global perspective. The report first investigates the economic fundamentals affecting China. These fundamentals are the source for China's latent demand. Then, the subsequent chapters detail China's accessibility. This evaluation covers a number of entry alternatives, including export strategies, and local direct investment strategies. If a firm decides to have a local presence in China, this requires a strategic understanding of local business conditions. The conditions investigated in this report include local marketing (advertising, distribution, pricing issues) and entry strategies (opening an office, joint venturing, etc.), as well as human resources management (labor laws, costs, regulations). Because local presence can increase...
