Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A great book if you have a $3mil launch budget!? NOT for small businesses!.......2005-12-19

I'm a small 2 person business based in Australia looking to release a new product, but this book is written for and ideal only for multimillion dollar, international companies with gigantic million dollar launch budgets, and with access to hundreds of staff to gather a "Launch Team".
Small businesses need more advice than multimillion dollar company's and given the expertise of the authors I believe they missed their boat in their own target audience for this product.
While this book does have the occasional tip or two, they are very few and far between; most of the copy refers back to a study they conducted, making for a book full of facts and statistics, not hands on, step by step advice.
If you can't find anything else to assist you, then for sure, take a read of this, but otherwise, keep looking. I found it hard to motivate myself to continue and finish it.
Wish I could be more positive, but I'm going to stick with my Guerrilla Marketing series of books, inspiring, motivational and practical!

5 out of 5 stars Loaded with great information.......2005-11-09

I think this book should be a required read for anyone involved in the launch process of any service, product, brand or image campaign. The steps really make your team re-think your goals and tactics to ensure you are capturing all facets of the market.

5 out of 5 stars A Most Valuable Read!.......2005-11-06

I am in the process of launching a new financial services company and found this book extremely useful in planning the launch of our business. It assisted us greatly in planning our launch which has now been executed smooth and free from any major issues. I'd recomend it to anyone planning on launching a new product or service, and not just those launching products. The insights are very relevant to service product launches as well.

5 out of 5 stars Highly readable and engaging.......2005-10-03

As a PR practitioner and advertising copywriter, I've always been amazed at how little information is out there about new product launches. The authors do a terrific job of walking you through what works and what doesn't, and explaining why launching a successful new product is harder than ever. The 10 success strategies are brought to life with interesting, real world examples from American companies in a wide range of industries. Whether you're on the agency side or the client side, if you're involved in a new product launch, this is a must have book.

2 out of 5 stars This management book is not universal!.......2005-09-16

I am very disappointed by this book. I think he only applies in the US. No successful example is done outside the US. I suggest to the author to have a more broaden approach of branding and product launch.

    Book Description

Most advanced countries have recently deregulated their credit markets and international capital movements have been liberalized. Over the same period, we have also experienced volatile financial markets and exchange rate crises, particularly in a number of European countries. This naturally raises the question of whether financial liberalization has affected macroeconomic stability and, if so, through which channels. As capital markets are liberalized, exchange rate crises may become more contagious. Empirical evidence indicates that this has been underlying the recent crises in the European currency market. This phenomenon has renewed our interest in the fundamental factors determining credibility of exchange rate policies and whether a Tobin tax on foreign exchange transactions could mute speculative pressure and stabilize the international monetary system. Macroeconomic stability towards different types of shocks may change as a result of both further capital market integration and monetary arrangements related to exchange rate management. This also raises the question of how the choice of operating targets for monetary policy affects macroeconomic stability. Seen from a single country perspective, capital market liberalization has had its most important effects by facilitating households' access to credit markets and opening up financial markets to foreign investors. This volume brings together theoretical and empirical contributions addressing these issues.

          Book Description

Monetary Stability through International Cooperation contains essays written by high ranking policy makers in the field of central banking and international finance, written in honour of André Szász, who has been Executive Director of De Nederlandsche Bank since 1973, responsible for international monetary relations. Colleagues from several other central banks, from finance ministries and from international institutions pay tribute to him by analysing the conditions fostering European as well as global monetary stability. The book provides an inside view of the thinking of monetary officials at the turn of 1993/1994, when the currency turmoil in the ERM of mid-1993 had subsided and views on its implications for exchange rate management and, more generally, for European integration were taking shape. Topics include exchange rate stabilisation, policy coordination and central bank independence. A second section, on the international monetary system, includes essays on the policy implications of present day dynamic financial markets as well as the role of the IMF. This book, written by `insiders for an insider', provides valuable insights to those who are interested in contemporary international monetary relations.

            Book Description

The Euro-Zone represents the single most important step in European Integration since 1957 and one of the boldest economic, monetary, and political projects in modern history. In this first major study, the author examines the major political questions raised by the birth of the Euro-Zone on January 1 1999 and argues for a more politically informed analysis and assessment of its nature, operation, and prospects. How does the Euro-Zone operate? What does it mean for European States and for the political strategies of governments? How is its operation to be explained? What are its prospects for stability? What kinds of policies are needed to strengthen its capacity to withstand crisis? The book stresses the ECB-centric nature of the Euro-Zone and its implications both for policy and polices in Europe and for theories of integration. The ECB emerges as a powerful 'policy pusher' and 'ideational leader', with an authority and power exceeding that of the European Commission in the integration process. Dyson examines the elated problems of social justice, democratic consent, and identity. He also argues that the Euro-Zone represents a process of transition to the EU as a 'stabilization Staten An innovative aspect of the book is its application of a strength-strain model for the purpose of analyzing and assessing the stability of the Euro-Zone. It concludes that the stability of the Euro-Zone will be strongly conditioned by three factors: how Kantian rather than Hobbesian or Lockeian its political culture proves to be, with a key reproducibility failing here on the quality of political leadership; its possession of policy interments to tackle liquidity as well as debt traps; and the speed and efficiency of mechanisms of 'bench marking, policy transfer, and 'lesson-drawing'.

                  Book Description

The fiscal policy framework of the EMU is in a states of crisis. Since the start of EMU, fiscal conditions in some member states have slipped considerably beyond the limits set by the Maastricht Treaty and the Stability and Growth Pact. It is clear that the preventive arm of the Stability and Growth Pact has failed to preclude excessive deficits.

There is no shortage of proposals to reform the current fiscal framework in this crisis situation. They range from calls for softening their implementation, and to proposals for closer coordination of national fiscal policies. None of these proposals offers a convincing solution to the problem at the heart of the current crisis: how to balance the need for effective long-run fiscal stability in EMU with the need for short-run flexibility of fiscal policy in the member states.

After a detailed analysis of the virtues and defects of the current fiscal framework, this report presents a proposal for reform that addresses this issue. The authors argue that EMU should move away from rigid fiscal rules for annual deficits towards a more judgmental process of monitoring the sustainability of fiscal policies. This approach is guided by three principles: independence, transparency, and legitimacy. Together wit the ability to assess the fiscal situation and outlook of each euro-area member state, they are the keys to designing a framework that provides enough flexibility and, at the same time, can build the required credibility and political support.

The authors propose the creation of a Sustainability Council for the EMU, and independent body with the sole statutory task of safeguarding the sustainability of public finances in the euro area. The Sustainability Council regularly and openly reports to the public and the European Parliament its assessment of the member states' fiscal policies, taking into account past performance, current perspectives and the future course of fiscal policies. Its mandate is the counterpart of the ECB's principal task of maintaining price stability. However, the Sustainability Council has no operative role in fiscal policy; it relies solely on the pressure of informed public opinion to discipline national governments. The use of the instruments of fiscal policy is entirely left to the national governments, and the Sustainability Council can only be conceived as a judge of national public finances.

                        Book Description

Much has been written about rigidities in shaping the poor performance of European labor markets. As EMU approaches, many wonder what interactions might be expected between labor market institutions and the changing character of EU economies. Absolute and relative efficiency are likely to become more important within EMU since increased specialization and more intense competition could enhance opportunities for labor reallocation, and free mobility of capital will more harshly penalize relatively inefficient countries and regions. On the other side of the same coin, increased turbulence of labor demand may generate calls for protection, especially as monetary and fiscal policies can hardly be used to offset asymmetric shocks. This book offers constructive comments and policy recommendations on the design and implementation of social policies in the EU. The ongoing debate surrounding the Social Chapter of the Maastricht Treaty has highlighted many of the issues addressed here: Can social policies continue to be implemented at the national level? Or is social dumping inevitable in the absence of a common social policy? If provisions are needed, should they take the form of minimal agreements, or should there be exceptions for particular countries? What consideration should future candidates from Central and Eastern Europe receive when designing current social policy directives? Is social dumping a healthy matter to force countries to lighten their excessive labor market regulations?
