4 out of 5 stars Excellent for staff training.......2001-03-27

We used this book last year for training our staff and we are looking forward to using it again. If you are in the service industry this book is a must for you. The authors used clear, diverse and practical examples of how to better a serve a diverse clientele. The workbook style made the topics approachable and simple. My staff really enjoyed what they learned and I found that they put the information to use.

I liked the diversity of cultural examples in the workbook; it was not just from one or two cultures. We did some fun role playing with book during our staff training.

I highly recommend this book to any business seeking to be more in tune and ready to serve all their customers and even expand their customer base.

      Book Description

Japan's stunning metamorphosis from an isolated feudal regime to a major industrial power over the course of the nineteeth and early twentieth centuries has long fascinated and vexed historians. In this study, David L. Howell looks beyond the institutional and technological changes that followed Japan's reopening to the West to probe the indigenous origins of Japanese capitalism.

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars The Review of Mr. Howell's Capitalism from within........2002-02-16

As its title suggests, Mr. David Howell's Capitalism from within has very ambitious goal to figure out the origin and the development of the modern Japanese capitalism. Although I appreciate his effort, it is quite unfortunate that I have to conclude that Mr. Howell has been unable to achieve his goal.

First of all, this topic (the origin and the development of the modern Japanese capitalism) has been fully investigated and studied by the specialists in Japan so that abundant research accomplishments regarding this topic are already available in Japanese. However, Mr. Howell has apparently ignored all of these research accomplishments so that the toipcs he argues in this book are already well-known and even very stale and obsolete for the people who are interested in the economic history of Japan. To make the matter worse, Mr. Howell is apparently not capable of presenting his arguments logically so that there is a danger that the readers become fully confused on trying to figure out what Mr. Howell wants to say. Also, I unfortunately have to add that Mr. Howell does not have enough skills to read the primary sources written in Japanese: He has made serious misinterpretation on the primary sources he referred to for this research. Thus, his argument in this work is quite irrelevant because, after all, it is based on serious misinterpretation on the primary historical documents.

Finally, I want to point out that although Mr. Howell argues that the Japanese capitalism has its indigenous origin in the late 19th century, this is absolutely incorrect. The Japanese capitalism (i.e., economic system for capitalism) was first prepared by Oda Nobunaga (last name first) in the 16th century, and the spirit (or ethos) of capitalism among the Japanese (which is analogous to the spirit of capitalism argued by Max Weber in his famous The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism) was initiated by a zen-priest called Suzuki Shosan (last name first) in early 17th century. Thus, by the end of the 19th century (the era Mr. Howell argues that capitalism first appeared in Japan), almost all the forms of production had been practiced with capitalistic spirit (ethos) already. Thus, the Japanese capitalism was firmly established in the late 19th century already.

For the readers who are interested in studying the origin of the modern Japanese capitalism, I recommend The Spirit of Japanese Capitalism and Selected Essays written by Yamamoto Shichihei. This book rigorously explains how Suzuki Shosan spread the spirit of capitalism among the Japanese. And for those who can read Japanese, I recommend the books written by Tominaga Kenichi and Komuro Naoki (last name first for both). They deeply investigate how the capitalistic system of economy was developed in the era of Oda Nobunaga and the following Edo Era. Also, we must not forget the works of Ootsuka Hisao on the Weberian sociology and its application to the Japanese society. I believe Ootsuka's works will be an appropriate introduction for those who want rigorous introduction to teh study of the the economic history of Japan. Finally, for the ambitious readers who want to spend their life on studying the history of Japan, I recommend the works of Tokutomi Soho. He was the first Japanese who paid attention to the correlation between the modernization of Japan and the economic reforms conducted by Oda Nobunaga.

      Book Description

Now in a second edition, this book explains Latin America's economic, political, social and cultural transformations, its association with globalization and search for modernity, and how these transformations are affecting the people of the region. Using a political economy approach to unravel these concepts, the emphasis is placed on interpreting the macro-level structures that frame the transformations taking place. Updated and revised to include more student friendly features, the authors have substantially rewritten the material, including three new chapters, to examine the challenges facing Latin American in the twenty-first century.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of current issues in Latin America........1999-03-28

The is a most impressive analysis of economic, political, social and cultural life in Latin America. This excellent book offers an holistic approach to understanding these changes, relating them to the wider processes of modernization and globalization. An international group of scholars with impressive credentials and from a wide range of disciplines attempt to contextualize their different disciplinary foci within a broad political economic approach that provides a critical yet balanced view and detailed analysis of the neoliberal policies pursued by almost all countries in the region. They contend that a new political economy is being contructed in Latin America, as national economies become radically reconstructed and transformed, democracy becomes the instituional norm, and new social arrangements are being created. The constestation and alternatives to this new global modernity are also explored. In sum, this excellent book fulfills a much needed market niche for students, scholars, and the educated avid reader, who require an interdisciplinary and contemporary approach to Latin American development.

            Book Description

Latin American countries initiated since the 1980s a reorientation of economic policies in whose formulation and implementation the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank (WB) have played a key role. This book shows that the IMF/WB programs have not achieved the expected results and allows the reader to understand the shortcomings and limitations of the orthodox approach. By analyzing the macro-models that inspire policy-based lending, the author argues that the weaknesses arise as a result of a questionable internal logic of the models, mistaken premises and a failure to account for the empirical evidence. The book claims and outlines an alternative Post-Keynesian and Structuralist framework to deal with stabilization and growth issues in Latin America. The basic model is based on important asymmetries among productive sectors and takes into account the existence of oligopolistic markets, money wage rigidities, income distribution and endogenous money. It is implied in this model the need to rethink the direction and overall form of economic policy.

Beyond Reform argues that economic growth in developing countries is intrinsically tied to the dynamics of production structures, to the specific policies and institutions created to support it, and the creation of linkages among domestic firms and sectors. Avoiding macroeconomic instability is also essential, however, macroeconomic stability is not a sufficient condition for growth. The broader institutional context and the adequate provision of education and infrastructure are essential "framework conditions", but generally do not play a direct role in bringing about changes in the momentum of economic growth.

                Book Description

In the past twenty years, economic policy in Latin America has veered toward neoliberalism, or market friendliness. State interventions in the economy were cut back in many areas, in the form of reductions in fiscal deficits; privatization of public enterprises; reductions of import quotas and tariffs and export subsidies; removal of barriers to foreign capital flow; and increased faith in the private sector and market processes.
This book offers an intellectual and historical background for these policy choices, specifically in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. The contributors detail the structural reform and economic policies in Latin America and discuss the various and often contradictory effects neoliberalism, such as fluctuating growth rates and saving-investment balances, worsened corruption, growth of exports, falling wages, and rising unemployment. In addition, each case study forecasts the effects of neoliberal policies on future growth and income distribution in the respective countries. Finally, it offers policy alternatives to neoliberalism.
The essays in this volume are: an introduction by Lance Taylor; "The Argentine Experience with Stabilization and Structural Reform," by José María Fanelli and Roberto Frenkel; "Opening, Stabilization, and Macroeconomic Sustainability in Brazil," by Edward Amadeo, "An Ongoing Structural Transformation: The Colombian Economy, 1986-96," by José Antonio Ocampo; "Economic Reforms, Stabilization Policies, and the 'Mexican Disease,'" by Nora Claudia Lustig and Jaime Ros; and "Structural Reforms and Macroeconomic Policy in Peru: 1990-96," by Oscar Dancourt.

                  Book Description

Over the last twenty years Latin America has seen a definitive movement toward civilian rule. Significant trade, fiscal, and monetary reforms have accompanied this shift, exposing previously state-led economies to the forces of the market. Despite persistent economic and political hardships, the combination of civilian regimes and market-based strategies has proved to be remarkably resilient and still dominates the region.

This book focuses on the effects of market reforms on domestic politics in Latin America. While considering civilian rule as a constant, the book examines and compares domestic political responses in six countries that embraced similar packages of reforms in the 1980s—Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela. The contributors focus on how ambitious measures such as liberalization, privatization, and deregulation yielded mixed results in these countries and in doing so they identify three main patterns of political economic adjustment. In Argentina and Chile, the implementation of market reforms has gone hand in hand with increasingly competitive politics. In Brazil and Mexico, market reforms helped to catalyze transitions from entrenched authoritarian rule. Finally, in Peru and Venezuela, traditional political systems have collapsed and civilian rule has been repeatedly challenged. The contributors include Carol Wise (University of Southern California), Karen L. Remmer (Duke University), Carol Graham (Brookings Institution), Stefano Pettinato (United Nations Development Programme), Consuelo Cruz (Tufts University), Juan E. Corradi (New York University), Delia M. Boylan (Chicago Public Radio), Riordan Roett (Johns Hopkins University), Martín Tanaka (Institute for Peruvian Studies, Lima), and Kenneth M. Roberts (University of New Mexico).

                    Book Description

This book criticized NAFTA rhetoric on the grounds that much of the support or opposition to the treaty was pointless; it rested on the belief that men are powerless before the global trends of economy. The book analyzes the opinions of more than 100 organizations and politicians from Canada, U.S., and Mexico, and covers the issues of free trade, labor, education, environment, and democracy.

                    2 out of 5 stars A possibly interesting non-Americentric analysis?.......2004-04-30

This book purports to be an analysis of the debate about the passage of NAFTA. However, the author appears to string togetther quotes to support conclusions he has already drawn; specifically that NAFTA was a done deal, the passage of which was what he calls a "fatalistic" outcome, regardless of any rhetoric. He argues that no genuine discussion or persuasion (rhetoric) took place prior to the enactment of the legistlation in 1993.

While I found the book of marginal value, perhaps others will be intrigued to read a persepective on the discussions and arguments associated with NAFTA from a scholar whose perpective is other than Americentic.

Especially interesting to me were the three "Commendatory Forwards" written about the book which appear at the beginning. Each appears to also be written by a neighbor to the South and each is uniformly laudatory of Professor Zarate-Ruiz's analysis. However, this native English speaker had touble discerning the meaning of these short forwards. Sentences like "This book will do it all for you and once and for all" gave my student and I a chuckle as we tried to figure out what the heck Professor Cuellar was saying, other than that he liked the book a lot. In fact, he concludes, "NAFTA will never be the same again, neither the politicians." (sic).

I only wish my own writing could elicit such praise.
