            Book Description

Contrary to general belief, and to Japan's own self-image, inequality of income and wealth distribution in Japan has grown in the past two decades. In this well-written and accessible book, Toshiaki Tachibanaki analyzes the movement toward more income inequality in Japan and offers policy recommendations to counter the trend. Tachibanaki, Japan's leading expert on income distribution, draws on new statistical data covering wealth, inheritance, farm and business holdings, salary, and other relevant factors, to demonstrate that Japan can no longer be thought of as a "90 percent middle-class society."

The book, updated and substantially expanded from Tachibanaki's 1998 Japanese bestseller, discusses the history and the causes of Japan's increasing income inequality and analyzes the effect on wealth distribution of intergenerational transfer. Employing cross-national comparisons to the United States and Europe throughout, Confronting Income Inequality in Japan examines the contrast between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome, evaluates equality of opportunity in terms of education and occupation, analyzes the relationship between income distribution and income growth, discusses the role of hierarchical positions in organizations, and considers the differences between welfare states and nonwelfare states. Concluding with policy recommendations, Tachibanaki argues against the belief of some economists that greater inequality is unavoidable if Japan is to achieve a strong economic recovery.

              Product Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for advertising material distribution services across the prefectures and cities of Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for advertising material distribution services. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                  Book Description

`The book is successful in analyzing various issues such as employment, growth, elderly care, etc. of ageing in Japan, and presenting various policy recommendations to deal with these serious problems. One interesting aspect of the book is the analysis regarding the way Japan interacts with the world in terms of immigration and foreign investment, which has received little attention in the literature. It is certainly a valuable book.'
                  - Toshiaki Tachibanaki, Kyoto University, Japan

`This wide-ranging collection of papers will be of value to anyone interested in the economics of ageing and the policy choices faced by the Japanese.'
                  - Mark Rebick, Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies, UK

`The book is composed of excellent contributions on the most pressing problems Japan faces in the immediate future, written by economists of the highest quality in Japan. Not only will it be a useful reference for students interested in economics, but also it will serve as a valuable and useful guide to policy makers in Japan.'
                  - Hirofumi Uzawa, The Development Bank of Japan

`This volume brings together a wide range of papers from leading experts on the Japanese economy who analyze some of the central issues that face an economy that will experience unprecedented demographic change. There are many policy issues that face Japanese governments as they respond to the profound changes in the labor market that stem from ageing. There is much to be learned about the appropriate policies from the work summarized in this wide-ranging book.'
                  - David Miles, Morgan Stanley, UK

`The problem of ageing has become acute in many rich countries today. This book by world-class Yale professor Koichi Hamada, the most distinguished Japanese economist today, and Hiromi Kato is an important and incisive contribution to our understanding of the Japanese situation. It should become a classic study.'
                  - Jagdish Bhagwati, Columbia University, US

This book is a concerted attempt by economists to investigate and offer remedies for some of the difficulties associated with an ageing labor market.

The economic problems of ageing combined with a declining population manifest themselves most acutely in the present Japanese economy. Demographic trends present serious social and economic problems for Japan, and the rest of the global community is affected by the ways in which it copes with these difficulties. The contributors to this book study Japan's experience, which is crucial for understanding the nature of ageing problems and for developing feasible policies to address them. Ageing labor markets could distort the employment mechanism, create youth unemployment, and disrupt incentives for human capital formation in younger workers. Though an economic approach is the core methodology in the book, it also encompasses diverse perspectives including sociological considerations of labor markets and negotiating behavior within households. The international implications of the problems are emphasized in the chapters that deal with immigration and capital markets.

This book will be an indispensable tool for economists, policy makers and students concerned with the effects of ageing societies throughout the world.

                    Book Description

The population base in both the United States and Japan is growing older and, as those populations age, they provoke heretofore unexamined economic consequences. This cutting-edge, comparative volume, the third in the joint series offered by the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Japan Center for Economic Research, explores those consequences, drawing specific attention to four key areas: incentives for early retirement; savings, wealth, and asset allocation over the life cycle; health care and health care reform; and population projections.

Given the undeniable global importance of the Japanese and U.S. economies, these innovative essays shed welcome new light on the complex correlations between aging and economic behavior. This insightful work not only deepens our understanding of the Japanese and American economic landscapes but, through careful examination of the comparative social and economic data, clarifies the complex relation between aging societies, public policies, and economic outcomes.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A810704. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In this thesis, a new VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) Communication system is developed using Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA) for multiple maritime mobile users in the footprints of national communication satellites. The Forward Error Correction (FEC) is implemented by applying convolution encoding with soft decision decoding. The worst case scenario is always considered by placing VSAT system and different types of jammers on the footprint where the minimum signal- to-noise ratio is possible. Using this assumption, the performance of the system is analyzed for different convolution code rates, for a different number of users and for the different jammer powers. The Walsh codes are used to establish an orthogonal cover between CDMA channels in a VSAT. Additionally, spread spectrum is included by PN sequences to ensure as much orthogonal coverage as possible between the VSATs. Also, that spreading is the key to minimizing these hostile jammers effects. After analyzing VSAT system for possible scenario elements, optimum system parameters are introduced for military and civilian applications.

                        Book Description

Though the world's population continues to grow, total fertility rates are dropping below replacement level in many parts of the world. The Baby Bust, a landmark book of essays by demographic, economic, and political science experts, examines the global birth dearth and its causes, implications, and policy options. Focusing in large part on the United States, this book also includes data from Europe and Japan and makes important comparisons between the three regions. It concludes with suggestions for making America's future sound and prosperous, through the regularization and legalization of appropriate levels of immigration; enhancing governmental efforts to increase productivity; and finally, ending the present waste of so many underutilized members of the workforce, particularly minorities and the poor. 3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but NOT an identification guide.......1999-08-02

This book is primarily a guide to the distribution of Japanese birds, and the historical record of their locations. Brazil lists every species ever seen in Japan and tells where and when it is found (by prefecture, island, or even more specific location if the bird is rare). Then he describes its habitat, nesting habits and seasons, and usually its calls. Finally, he lists the authorities who have described it and summarizes the large regions in which it has been seen.

Nowhere does he discuss the birds' appearances at all. There are six nice color plates and some excellent line drawings, but in total these show only about 100 birds, and are not planned with identification in mind in any case.

Brazil includes an amazing bibliography, totaling over 1000 entries going back to the early 1800s. The bibliography alone is worth the price of the book. In his text, however, he does not limit his citations to the bibliography but also references a large number his own personal observations and communications from other observers.

Mark Brazil is a major authority on Japanese birds, and this book is valuable in many ways. But it is in no sense an identification guide.

                        Book Description

Several years have passed since the 'store wars' over barriers to foreign products at Japanese distribution firms. Yet among English-speaking readers, how these firms operate remains a puzzle. In this book, the best Japanese scholars in their fields attempt to unravel that puzzle. Avoiding culture-based explanations, they employ a systematic and rigorous economic logic---yet, since they also avoid mathematical notation, the argument remains accessible to generalist readers. Collectively, the authors make four basic points: * Within a country, distribution is less similar than it appears. Not only does it vary enormously across industries, but it often varies within a given industry as well. * Across countries, distribution is less diverse than it appears. Although appearances sometimes suggest major cross-national contrasts, on more careful analysis the differences often disappear. * Distribution sometimes depends on the product involved. Because distribution functions as the principal means by which manufacturers acquire information about consumer preferences, the character of distribution can depend crucially both on demand patterns and on manufacturing technology. * In the absence of regulatory intervention, distribution generally will be efficient and non-exclusionary. Regulation usually introduces inefficiency and often creates barriers to entry. Importantly, however, the targets of exclusion will less often involve foreign than domestic competitors. To illustrate these points, the authors draw on both analyses that cross various sectors and analyses that are specific to sectors; they study both regulated and unregulated industries; they describe industries with extensive imports, industries with extensive exports, and industries with neither; they examine the effect of technological change; and they introduce a variety of case studies, from agriculture and automobiles to electrical appliances and apparel.

3 out of 5 stars A useful elaboration of the distribution process.......2003-12-17

The traditional stereotype of a "Mom and Pop" store continues to pervade generalist analysis of the Japanese retail sector. This book provides a welcome insight into the mechanics of distribution, as structural change is forced on the sector by external pressure - and by the changing demands of a younger generation whose values have metamorphasised away from the standards of their parents. Some of the retail systems (for example auto distribution) are shown to be more sophisticated and less inefficient than trade protectionist caricatures would have international observers believe. Inevitably, this is a book that is likely to date fairly rapidly given the changes pervading Japan's corporate economy and general society. Nonetheless, it is a useful snapshot of what was happening to an important sector in the midst of powerful forces for change.

                            Book Description

For decades, Central America has faced market dependency, natural disasters, and political systems characterized by protectionist policies and low participation--situations that have had a tremendous impact on its economic development. This two-volume set is a comprehensive assessment of Central America's position in the world economy, and it serves as a handbook for the important economic reforms Central America must undertake to become a viable competitor in the international economy.
