I may be a novice, but... .......2007-03-21
Unlike the previous reviewer, I gleened a lot of useful info from this book. Susan Smith Alvis nails down the ins and outs of purchasing real estate for first time (or second, or fifth time) home buyers. With detailed instructions on how to get your finances together, what you can afford, and how to look for loans, she makes the complicated world of the real estate transaction seem simple.
The book is sectioned into subjects such as "Looking At Your Finances", "Creative Financing" and "Foreclosures", explaining each step in the process of home ownership. Interspersed with real life examples from realtors, the chapters build on each other, culminating in the sale of the home and its aftermath. Ms. Alvis even gives a list of things to do after purchase, such as changing the locks, keeping a home journal, and advertising rental property.
This is a must read for anyone buying their first home, or anyone who is purchasing property for financial gain (such as rental homes).

Book Description
For every prospective homebuyer there is a unique financial situation. Some may have past or current credit issues, others lack cash-on-hand for a down payment, and many have unpredictable incomes. But this doesn't mean these folks are any less entitled to own a home.
Who Says You Can't Buy a Home! gives readers plenty of proven, powerful ways to overcome perceived obstacles to home ownership. Real estate and home-buying authority David Reed tells hopeful buyers everything they need to know about establishing credit, using government mortgage and zero money down programs, buying foreclosures, getting subprime loans, buying without a mortgage, and much more.
And for those with shaky credit, Who Says You Can't Buy a Home! offers priceless advice on managing credit scores and reports, repairing bad credit, and other crucial steps that can make the difference between owning a home and being turned down. The book also shows how to avoid predatory lenders and common mistakes, while giving readers the confidence and know-how to get the home they've always wanted.
Customer Reviews:
Opens up your options!.......2007-05-22
I meet lots of first time home buyers who have bad or no credit. Often times they are frustrated and start to assume that most lender and brokers don't want to deal with them. What this book does is open up those options.
I let one of my clients borrow this book. He came back to me and felt more confident with his decision to pursue to signing the papers.
Great information, easily explained, lots of ideas.......2006-05-29
Although this book has chapters devoted to people with no credit or bad credit, this new book tells how people can get a home loan - at competitive rates - that might not have any money for down payment or closing costs, regardless of credit history.
I'm in the real estate business and thought I had heard it all but this book points out strategies that I didn't know existed. Perhaps the best sections are those which address people with damaged credit and how to not just shop around for the best loan but maybe more importantly how to protect themselves from "bad" loan officers who are only in the business to take advantage of someone and charge super high rates and fees.
I bought several copies of this book to give to clients who think they can't buy a home. Then wait for their phone call!

This book was jammed full of great tips for the e-bay seller on where to buy, what to buy, what not to buy, niche markets, trends, and business relationships. The authors have included invaluable hints on pricing formula. Other concepts of the trade including drop shipping and consignment were also covered. There was also a fantastic merchandise directory, which in itself would probably cover the cost of the book. The glossary of terms would also be very informative for those just starting out in the business.
A great buy for those beginning in E-Bay selling. Highly recommended also for those who need to improve their E-Bay trade.

Here it is--the ultimate source for understanding who spends how much on food and beverages. Scores of items include baby food, pork chops, instant coffee, potato chips, fresh and frozen vegetables--if Americans eat or drink it, you can probably find out how much they're spending on it in this book. There are six types of tables in the book: Average spending tables, which present average spending data for all households in a segment; i.e., all households with incomes of $30,000 to $39,999, not just for purchasers of an item. Indexed spending tables compare the spending of each household segment with that of the average U.S. household. Per capita spending tables show how much households spend on each food category after dividing average spending by the number of people in the household segment. Indexed per capita spending tables compare the spending of each household segment with the spending of the average household, after adjusting for household size. Total spending tables show the dollar size of the total household market and of each market segment. Market share tables are produced by converting the total spending data to percentages, which makes it easier to see which household segments account for more of the spending on a food item. There are also projections to 2000 of total spending and market shares by age.

Glass Half Empty or Half Full?.......2001-07-26
Enjoyed this account of the Irish economy. There are some good insights into the nature of technology lead industrialization, and some of the distortions and exaggerations caused by such development. O'Hearn does a good job at deflating some of the euphoria over high tech in Ireland.
At the same time, the tone of pessimism pervading the book seems unwarranted. Multinational corporations (MNCs) are vilified, and even Singapore is criticized for adopting a similar model for national development. MNCs have real issues but on the whole deserve higher marks than what O'Hearn grants them. O'Hearn also bemoans that Irish workers are often assigned more mundane tasks like software localization, comparing the work to that of mind numbing sweatshops or assembly lines. Ireland's contributions to the IT industry should be a source of pride, and the opportunity to take leadership will arise as a natural outgrowth of the industry's voracious appetite for talent, just as advanced R&D has taken root in Israel, India, and other places.
Well written, balanced, and thought-provoking........1998-12-22
A well written, balanced, and thought-provoking account of the Irish economic phenomenon. Denis O'Hearn confirms that government intervention has played an important role in boosting Ireland's growth. The IDA's gamble in offering huge incentives to Intel to locate near Dublin, for instance, has paid off in a big way. But he tempers his analysis by drawing attention to the way that misleading GDP numbers have overstated the Irish economy's true rate of growth. Displaying an exceptionally well informed understanding of the East Asian tigers, he correctly concludes that Ireland's effort to build its economic prowess, while impressive by European standards, falls short in many respects compared to that of nations like Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea. Eamonn Fingleton, author of "In Praise of Hard Industries: Why Manufacturing, Not the Information Economy, is the Key to Future Prosperity" ( to be published by Houghton Mifflin in June 1999).

Book Description
In 1997,
The Economist magazine stated that 'over the last ten years, Ireland has enjoyed an astonishing economic success'. How did a basket case economy turn itself around in such a short space of time? What are the comparisons between the much-vaunted Asian tigers, and are there dangers that the Irish economy could suffer from the same pitfalls? This readable comprehensive book addresses all of these questions and more and will be a terrific reference source for anyone wanting to understand developing economies.
