How Industries Evolve: Principles for Achieving and Sustaining Superior Performance
Anita M. McGahan Manufacturer: Harvard Business School Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1578518407 |
Book Description
An Insightful Model for Understanding Industry Change
From Xerox to K-Mart to Sotheby's, great companies have failed to translate extraordinary innovation into better profitability. Why does this happen?
Anita M. McGahan argues that great companies fail to profit from investments in innovation when they break their industries' rules for how change can take hold. In this book, she shows how to develop a strategy that is aligned with the rules of industry change. By understanding and operating within the rules, executives can better appreciate the tradeoffs that are unique to each company's evolutionary path-and consequently improve performance by making smarter, more profitable strategic bets.
How Industries Evolve is based on extensive statistical studies of 700 global industries and more than twenty-five case studies. McGahan identifies four models of industry evolution-progressive, creative, radical, and intermediating-and shows how a company can diagnose which model most closely describes the trajectory of change in its industry. The book then explains how company strategists can use their understanding of this model to carefully coordinate choices about R&D, alliances, internal venturing, leadership style, compensation, modularization, and time-to-market.
By supporting executives' efforts to recognize and respond to shifts in industry structure, this book will ultimately help companies to achieve and sustain superior performance.

Technology Shocks: Origins, Managerial Responses, and Firm Performance (Contributions to Management Science)
Heinrich M. Arnold Manufacturer: Physica-Verlag Heidelberg ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 3790800511 |
Book Description
Radical technological changes (so-called "technology shocks") frequently disrupt the competitive market structure. New entrants appear, industries need to be redefined, incumbents lose their positions or vanish completely. Fast moving industries - like the often quoted example of the semiconductor industry - have preferably been analyzed for these phenomena. But do the findings hold for industries with longer development cycles like the global machine tool industry?
Here, the multivariate analysis is used to find out what management needs to focus on in order to lead companies through the technology shocks. The research for this book builds on in-depth interviews with 100 experts and decision makers from the machine tool industry involved in technology shocks and statistical analysis of detailed quantitative surveys collected from 58 companies. In several instances the results challenge classical teaching of technology management.
Adrian J. Slywotzky - US top selling business author and one of the most distinguished intellectual leaders in business - comments:
"In
Technology Shocks, Heinrich Arnold develops a very useful model for analyzing technology shocks, and for focusing on those factors that will enable a company to navigate through these shocks successfully, and repeatedly. Although this work is focused on technology, its thinking has useful implications beyond
technology shocks. It provides ideas that managers can use to protect their firms when they are faced with any type of discontinuity, technology-based or not".

The European Competitiveness and Transition Report: Ratings of Accession Progress, Competitiveness, and Economic Restructuring of European and Transit
World Economic Forum Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0195152573 |
Book Description
For over a decade, central and eastern Europe has been at the center of one of the most profound economic and political transformation in history. At the start of the 1990's, the region embarked on an ambitious reform program to depart from central planning towards more market-based economies. A decade later, and amid significant difficulties, the region has achieved remarkable accomplishments, with several countries becoming increasingly integrated into the global economy. Political structures have been transformed and new institutions have emerged. Indeed, the progress in structural reforms achieved in the region has been so substantial that several countries are now at the threshold of European Union membership. Aware of the significance of the successful integration of central and eastern Europe into the global economy, the World Economic Forum and Harvard University are proud to introduce The European Competitiveness and Transition Report, a thorough review of the transition process that has unfolded in the last decade. This comprehensive report presents new data and expert commentary on what the facts say about the enlargement of the European Union and the competitiveness and growth potential of both Europe and the candidate countries. It addresses the many important factors that will determine how these countries will fare in terms of economic growth over the next ten to twenty years. Written by independent experts, The European Competitiveness and Transition Report 2001-2002 is a truly unique data-driven guide that lays out the facts and reveals the real issues behind European enlargement.
