Book Description
Why are some countries poor? What can they do to turn their situations around? What happens to countries and individuals when they move towards being "modern"? What does it mean to "develop" and be "modern" anyway? What are the social effects of the processes of worldwide economic, cultural, and political integration called globalization? From Modernization to Globalization is a reference for scholars, students and development practitioners on the issues of processes of social change and development in the 'Third World'. It provides carefully excerpted samples from both classic and up-to-date writings in the development literature, as well as, a general introduction. Part One reviews formative ideas on the transition to modern society with brief readings from classical theorists. The second part addresses the modernizationists' discussion of how development changes people. The response from dependency and world-system theorists is reviewed in Part Three. The final section includes eight of the most influential writings on the social effects of globalization. Together, this represents an unprecedented compilation important of writings on international development.Customer Reviews:

From Third World to World Class: The Future of Emerging Markets in the Global Economy

From Pat Buchanan to Ralph Nader, America's right and left are united in their conviction that free trade is evil. They are joined by most trade unions, environmentalists, and members of Congress (as shown by their refusal to let President Clinton negotiate wider free-trade agreements). Yet the growth of world trade is at least partly responsible for the American economy's robust good health and for the rise of living standards worldwide. From Third World to World Class is an excellent source of intellectual ammunition to counter the rising tide of protectionism. Peter Marber, a New York money manager specializing in emerging markets, has written a reasoned celebration of world capitalism's benign effects. One chapter title sums up his optimism: "How Multinationals Are Helping the Poor Get Richer and the Rich Stay Rich." Marber believes that rich nations need not fear low-wage competitors, not so long as the rich nations educate their workforces. Rising Third World economies will become lucrative markets for Western technology, entertainment, services, and a host of consumer brands. That is, if protectionism does not halt the virtuous cycle that is raising billions of people out of poverty. --Barry MitzmanBook Description
From the Americas to Asia, rapid growth and economic transformation are creating a wide array of new business opportunities-for multinational corporations and individual investors alike. But the rise of the developing world is also challenging long-held beliefs that the industrialized nations would call all the shots. In this highly original analysis of developing nations, investment, and global business expansion - written against the backdrop of financial crises in Asia, Russia, and Latin America - Peter Marber identifies the risks and rewards of investing in emerging markets, and reveals new sources of conflict as value systems clash in a game of global economic integration where there will inevitably be financial losers, as well as winners.Customer Reviews:

Winners and Losers of EU Integration: Policy Issues for Central and Eastern Europe
Helen Tang Manufacturer: World Bank Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821344277 Release Date: 2005-09-30 |
Book Description
"The Czech capital market has not played an important role in the development of the Czech economy thus far. On the other hand... it has been used and often abused as a tool of wealth redistribution in the CR [Czech Republic], and has influenced the outcome of winners and losers of the transformation process to date." Ten countries in Central and Eastern European (CEECs) have applied for membership in the European Union (EU). They could gain from exchanging lessons of experiences and best practices with each other as they address the common set of challenges in their preparation for EU accession. The "EU Integration" network of research institutes in the ten CEECs provides a valuable forum for such exchanges on key economic, social and political issues related to EU membership. This volume contains the papers presented at the first meeting of the EU integration network, as well as some background papers. The papers seek to identify the main economic, social and political groups that would gain or lose from accession, and highlight the policy adjustments on the parts of both the EU and the CEECs to ease the accession process. The contributors include researchers from the ten CEECs, as well as from current EU member countries. This publication will be of interest ot research institutions, governments, and nongovernmental organizations.

Building Market Institutions in South Eastern Europea study of impediments to investment and private sector development in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, and Serbia and Montenegroyields fundamentally new insights for improving the region's business environment, economic development, and prospects for growth. It focuses on four core topics:* Business competition and economic barriers to entry and exit
* Access to regulated utilities and services
* Corporate ownership, transparency of business accounts, and access to finance
* Mechanisms for commercial dispute resolution
Each topic is empirically investigated across all eight South Eastern European countries through the systematic use of data from multiple sources:
* Official data from each country in the region
* Results from two annual rounds of quantitative, firm-level surveys covering 1,600 firms
* Results from 40 originally developed enterprise-level business case studies
The result is an innovative analysis of cross-country comparisons and the development of key policy challenges from a regional perspective.
Building Market Institutions in South Eastern Europe, a collaborative effort between the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, offers important practical insights for all policymakers and observers concerned with the future of South Eastern Europe. It makes concrete recommendations for reforms that would ease the constraints on domestic and foreign investment, an essential step in sustaining growth and reducing poverty in the region.

Cross-Border Trade and the Parallel Currency Market - Trade and Finance in the Context of Structural Adjustment: A Case Study from Kano, Nigeria, Research Report 113 (NAI Research Reports)
Yahaya Hashim , and Kate Meagher Manufacturer: Nordic Africa Institute ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 9171064494 |
Book Description
The authors of this study challenge the assumptions of the World Bank that the expansion in informal cross-border trade is a vindication of the market-liberalizing thrust of structural adjustment, and that adjustment policies have improved the effectiveness of an "independent" bourgeoisie that is emerging out of this trade as an agent of regional integration. Instead, they make the case for the adoption of what they call a "development approach" for tapping the benefits of the informal currency markets, as an alternative to the "market coercion" of structural adjustment.

Development Co-operation and Third World Development: (International Development Resource Books)
Manufacturer: Greenwood Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0313241511 |
Book Description
The past two decades have witnessed an ongoing search for a more coherent basis for development cooperation and the means to satisfy global needs. The achievement of better relations among developed and developing countries remains an urgent task as the world community seeks to formulate a new and more equitable economic order. Findings in this volume suggest that persistent economic difficulties within industrial countries, especially high unemployment and inflationary tendencies, have made it clear that the rich and poor countries alike must strive for more effective patterns of world economic and development collaboration. Contributors explore cooperation among developing countries as both a means for implementing a new international economic order and a desirable feature of this order. This book provides researchers with much needed knowledge about the different sources of information and data available for the study of the objectives, goals, and methods of development cooperation programs among Third World countries.
