In addition to the traditional use of participant observation, interviews, and surveys, qualitative researchers have developed a variety of other methods to obtain information in their studies. Visual data from film and still photographs are now supplemented with video and computer techniques and are used in many settings. Focused group interviews, once in the domain of market researchers, are now regularly used by qualitative researchers as well. Elicitation techniques, such as triads, pile sorts, and freelists, originally developed by cognitive anthropologists have been widely adopted to help understand the inner workings of the members of a group. In this brief volume, these three sets of methods are explained in simple, practical language. The authors describe when and how to use these sets of techniques for community research, market research, and formative evaluation and other health, social welfare, and educational settings both domestically and internationally.

This volume is a very easy to read and is organized to be used as a reference tool. The format of having frequent summary tables makes the relevant information very accessible and easy to find. The authors have included a lot of examples of ways that their techniques have been used in real research for clarification purposes. However, these are set off from the main text into separate sections so it is convenient both to read for the base content and skip the examples or to get a fuller understanding to read straight through. The key points are bolded and emphasized by special markers and the important definitions are pulled into the margins. This makes it simple to get the main points of the book without much effort.

There are three main topics covered as supplementary methods to do ethnographic research: Audiovisual techniques, Focus Group Interviewing, and Elicitation Techniques for Cultural Domain Analysis. The authors make it very clear that there is a definite niche for these methods in the field of ethnography, but also that these are to be used as auxiliaries to the main methods covered in another volume. The book covers the main advantages and disadvantages of each of these techniques, gives step by step instructions as to how to implement the techniques and gives thorough examples of how these methods have already been used in the field.

This volume is clearly part of a larger series and the authors urge the readers to use the whole succession. The introduction to the book is actually more of an introduction to the entire took kit series than an overview of the book. This particular part of the sequence is valuable for someone who is involved in ethnography and is looking for new ideas to get at specific issues, or is looking for a way to get good supplementary information. This book is definitely not the core of the series, but it is an excellent work on some of the issues on the periphery.

Robert K Merton is a name largely forgotten in marketing research circles, yet he is widely credited as being the inventor of the focus group as a concept. It began when he was roped in by his colleague (another research giant)Paul Lazarsfeld to assist with a project looking at how groups of US soliders were reacting to Uncle Sam propaganda films.

Merton observed some interviews and was appalled, basically, by the lack of technique. The questions were leading, the interviewer bias was showing (So how totally evil do you think these Nazi's are?) and... well, Merton took up Lazarsfeld's offer to lead the project. This was in the 1940s, and Lazarfeld's "Columbia school" was the dominant force in pioneering the art and science of Market Research. Many of the techniques we use today (often without question)came from these people.

Merton went on to carve out his name as a great and influential sociologist, but not before he wrote this handy volume in 1951, a complete guide to the techniques of conducting a focused interview - that is, an interview that has an agenda to find evidence that helps prove or disprove a particular thesis.

The original text became a bible for interviewers, and for good reason. While you'll find Merton's style a little dry, the book is fastidious in going through all aspects of the interview and discussing the philosophy behind what we're doing.

Researchers, like golfers, need to be quite self-conscious, I feel, to go back and hone our skills and re-think our techniques and emerge (like Tiger Woods, I dare say, after redefining his swing) better and stronger as professionals. This book helps us literally to go back and revisit where our techniques and methods come from.

It includes a forward in which Merton reasserts his role as a pioneer (I think it reads too self-justifyingly, and way too stuffily) but he has a fair point. When a great idea gets incorporated into society, or - as we see in this case - into a profession, then something is usually lost: the initial rationale perhaps.

For your professional growth I recommend this volume strongly, and recommend a copy for your qualitative team. It helps you get back and question and polish the interview techniques we take for granted.

Why didn't I listen to the other reviewers before buying this book? The critiques offered were spot on, and if anything too mild.

I bought this book with the idea of learning about how to use focus groups in launching a new business. I will have to look elsewhere. But since the book was so deliciously bad, I am going to enjoy trashing it here. Or, as the author (who by the way has a PHd in Psychology) would probably say: it is highly cathartic to vent dissonence, substantiating real and or percieved loss of value through providing feedback in a forum of peers".

1) Other reviewers already mentioned this book reads like a doctoral thesis. Much too generous. I would say it reads like the "Duke University Post-Graduate Journal of Letters of the Deptartment of Deconstructing Marketing Psychology".

2) The book is chock full of self-promotion. If the author needs to establish credentials, the introduction is the place to do it. To insert your resume into the text of the book is just annoying.

3) The chapters titles often provide no clue as to what the chapter is supposed to be about. This is particularly damning, since reading the chapters themselves doesn't always solve the riddle. I defy you to guess the subject of these chapters:
"The Technical Revolution" - Chapter 3
"The Technical Revolution II: The Second Coming" - Chapter 4
"The Theoretical Concept" - Chapter 5
"The Soul of the Focus Group" - Chapter 6
The titles of sub-chapters were equally inane. A few random examples: "What Am I Bid?"; "People Boxes"; "Shifting Gears".

4) Much of the book is simply off topic. I understood this to be a guide to planning and implementing focus groups. If only. Two chapters are historical digressions into the roots of focus groups. Another chapter surveys the psychology of consumerism. Some chapters I still don't know what they were supposed to be about. Elsewhere the book plumbs such issues as the gripes of quantitative researchers towards the qualitative researchers, the authors stream of consiousness as she prepares herself for writing reports, the role of advertising in society, etc.

5) The book does not tackle the very pertinent question of what types of marketing problems are best solved with focus groups, and what types are best solved with surveys. Given the amount of academic soul-searching the author engages in, this is inexusable.

This book was not a complete waste. I did get some useful information from reading it. However, page for page, it was the most narcissistic book I have ever bought.

I would not recommend buying this book. The information covered in it is also covered in other books, but this one is exceptionally long-winded. On top of that, there is a plethora of typographical errors (which drive me absolutely nuts in a published, hardcopy book).

i'm annoyed with myself for buying it because this is totally not what i was hoping for. i needed a book that matches this book's byline "A Strategic Guide to Organizing..." and in my mind it doesn't live up to that. This book definitely needs to have a "warning: experts only" or "warning: academics only" the way that computer books do. then i could have bought the introductory book that i needed instead of this piece of work that reads like something aimed at a college professor instead of a working professional.

the frustrating part here is that there *is* good information in here, it just takes 4 times longer to extract it and digest it than you can with a book that's utilizes plain lanuguage, better typesetting and layout, and some degree of user-friendliness. to make an analogy: i needed the "Mac" version of this information and what i bought was the commandline unix version.

Faley Templeton seems to know a lot about focus groups but i think she could have spent more time on structuring her book. She talks a lot about her daily experience and her personal opinion on testing aspects. As a novice to this subject I expected a kick-start on how to conduct focus groups - with more facts and basics. This seems to be a book for experts who want to get some additional insight from another expert.

                Elizabeth Pond examines a number of disputes—chronic trade quarrels, the International Criminal Court, the Kyoto Protocol, Israeli-Palestinian violence, and Iraq—and identifies the ways in which they reinforce and exacerbate one another. European governments have accepted a rhetorical responsibility for global (and not just European) security, but the dearth of defense funding in Europe, disagreements over tactics, and the bad American temper toward the Europeans have added to the estrangement.

                This book is absolutely essential to anyone who is seeking to understand what went wrong between Europe and the U.S. following 9/11. The author has great insight, excellent information and a good natured understanding of the conflicts between the two powers.

                3 out of 5 stars Outdated & Non-Comprehensive.......2004-10-20

                Ms. Pond does a great deal of research for her piece, Friendly Fire, and the depth of her knowledge shows. She is able to cite with authority much of the progression of events and media coverage of the fallout between the United States and Europe up until immediately following the swift US victory against Saddam Hussein.

                However, her book unfortunately includes several issues that have since either been refuted or made irrelevant by subsequent disputes. The Plame affair, involving Ambassador Wilson, have been thoroughly debunked, while relations between the allies underwent even more convulsions in the reconstruction period of the Coalition occupation of Iraq.

                It cannot be said that this incompletenes is her fault, but for someone looking for a more complete review of post-9/11 US-European relations, this offers only half of the tale. Further, as she is a correspondent in Germany, he work is heavily weighted toward the US-German relationship, almost entirely ignoring the French leadership's crusade against American "hyperpower." Still, if you are looking for an in-depth exploration of the US-German relationship from 9/11 until the victory against Saddam, this is more than sufficient, clear and well-researched.
