I'm sorry that I bought this book.
The author lists discounts from stores that no longer exist.
The book was written in 1997. Since then, Cloth World was bought by Jo-Ann's and Hancock fabrics went into chapter 11 bankruptcy.
I would be willing to purchase an updated version of this book. The author lists many resources that are still good.

This was recommended by the Texas Municipal Retirement System in their Winter 2006 newsletter. Even though it was published a few years ago, they advise that the money-saving ideas are still useful.
It categorizes the savings into: airlines, car rental, auto maintenance, home and garden, banks, insurance companies, camping and recreation, cruises, bus and rail tours, groceries, hotels, legal and tax services, medical and dental services, movies and performances, restaurants, department stores, and sports tickets.
In the back of the book, the index is arranged by city name so you can look in your local area for savings.

Contains information I was not able to find anywhere else. In my opinion, Sylvia did a very thorough research on this subject. I found the information to be very complete. The only exception is one grocery store in Georgetown that offers senior discounts of 5% on Wednesdays. This was offset by at least 12-15 discounts that were new to me. The book is very well organized. It provides listings by type of discount and location (city or town). It exceeded my expectation!

Book Description

From Emperor to Citizen is the autobiography of Pu Yi, the man who was the last emperor of China. A unique memoir of the first half of the 20th century as seen through the eyes of one born to be an absolute monarch, the book begins with the author's vivid account of the last, decadent days of the Ching Dynasty, and closes with an introspective self-portrait of the last Ching emperor transformed into a retiring scholar and citizen of the People's Republic of China.

In detailing the events of the fifty years between his ascension to the throne and the final period of his life as a quiet-living resident of Beijing. Pu Yi reveals himself to be first and foremost a survivor, caught up in the torrent of global power struggles and world conflict that played itself out on the Asian continent through many decades of violence and upheaval.

This firsthand description of the dramatic events of Pu Yi's life was the basis for the internationally acclaimed 1987 Bernardo Bertolucci film The Last Emperor which was named Best Picture of the Year by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. From Emperor to Citizen readily lends itself to cinematic adaptation as a personal narrative of continuously significant and revealing episodes.

Becoming emperor and then forced to abdicate with the establishment of the Republic of China in 1911, all before he is seven continues to live in Forbidden City for another decade still treated as the Son of Heaven by the moribund Ching court, but in reality a virtual prisoner, with little genuine human contact apart from his beloved nurse Mrs. Wang, his teacher Chen Pao-shen and his English tutor Reginald Johnston.

When at the age of nineteen Pu Yi is finally forced to vacate his isolated existence within the Forbidden City, he begins his long odyssey as the dependent of the occupying imperial Japanese regime, first in Tientsin, and eventually installed as "emperor" of the Japanese puppet state styled Manchukuo in China's northeast provinces. With the defeat of Japan and the end of the Second World War, Pu Yi faces a very uncertain future as he is shunted off to Russia for five years before returning to a new China transformed by revolution, where he is confined in the Fushun War Criminal Prison. Here he undergoes several years of rehabilitation, "learning how to become a human being," as he calls it, before receiving an official pardon and being allowed to finally live as an ordinary citizen of Beijing.

This autobiography is the culmination of a unique and remarkable life, told simply, directly and frankly by a man whose circumstances and experiences were like no other.

5 out of 5 stars Link back to the past.......2007-08-31

I bought this book when I was in Holiday in Malaysia. I have always been fascinated by Pu Yi. How he felt being on the dragon throne and falling from the greatest height and living through it and reforming is such a fantastic story.

I think his story is fair portrayal of his life though in the ending it was a bit tinted to glorify the communist party. But overall it gave a good assessment of his life, his pains, his cowardice and most of all his reformation to a citizen.

You could almost feel his anguish as he was writing it.

I would highly recommend this book as I could not put it down since I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars "A person's life full of sadness and exciting adventure~!".......2006-01-02

This book says about a peson's life full of sadness
and incredible events.

One day, all of a sudden, Japan full of ambition and burning desire of invasion ivaded China.
China was less stong than Japan that introduced modern weapons
and various systems from western countries.
China which didn't realize about the fact how much the world was changing didn't open its gate toward other countries and it caused China to weaken more and more.

Finally Japan invaded China in the twinking of an eye
when China is in plaid and calm state!
Unfortunately, every Chinese had to suffer inexpressibly painful
experience in their lives because of the war that was broken out by Japan.
'Pu Yi' emperor, who is hero of this book, was one of whom get hurt from that pain.
He was crowned as emperor of Ching Dynasty by a dowager who had power
and authority at the time.

Thanks to the fact that he was emperor,
he enjoyed the privilege of being emperor of a country.
A lot of eunuchs and servants served him and he could taste
as colorful foods as he pleases!
It must have been a fabulous privilege to him!

But the happiness and joy didn't last for a long time.
After he became emperor, one day Japan invaded China
and broke out war.

As a result of sudden situation, China had been thrown into
chaos of the horrible war and became one of the colony of Japan.
And emperor Pu yi, who is just this book's sorrowful hero, had to be manipulated by the Japan's government.
He had been degenerated into a puppet of the goverment of Japan.

In a word, Ching Dynasty was nothing but a puppet goverment of Japan.
It was really heartbreaking situation!
Japan meddled in every affairs that had to be carried out
by Ching Dynasty and controlled everything that happens in China.
Thanks to meddlesome Japan, China, or rather, 'Ching dynasty'
began to wane rapidly.

No matter how powerful the Ching Dymasty was in the past,
Ching Dynasty's shining glory and power had been waned by Japan
that was a just tiny island country in a map in the past.
To make a long story short,
Ching Dynasty began to wane day by day.
Ching Dynasty, or rather, China is a country that is repleate
of proud and confience and such China's aspect is expressed
as 'Sinocentrism'.

China was a country that regarded itself as the most powerful
country that stand in the center of the world.
But the sudden invasion of Japan gave inexplicable insult to
China.

At that time, truly many drastic events occured in China
and China started chaning.
Finally Pu yi, emperor of Ching Dynasty,
had to be the last emperor of Ching Dynasty.

As a result of drastic change of China,
he was forced to abdicate with the establishment of the Republic of China in 1911.

After abdicating from his throne,
he became nothing but a citizen of China.

Meanwhile, Communists started to administer China.

Pu Yi who had been turned into a citizen from his throne
began to live as an ordinary person.
He says about a lot of things occured in his life
through this book.

Reading this book, I experienced lots of things!
This book is gripping and exciting book tell us about
a man's adventure.

I would love to recommend a person who want to understand
and learn about China's history to read this book.
This book is not a biography but autobiography that is written
by the last emperor of China Dynasty.

He was a eyewitness of the time full of chaos and drastic
change that occured in China.
That's why this book is excellent in comparison with any of book
that deal with China's modern history.

I convinced that readers will be able to broaden their
insight by reading this book that is culmination of a person
who experienced incredible and astonishing experience
in his whole life.

5 out of 5 stars Pu Yi my life.......2005-11-15

Pu Yi Last Emperor of China, his life, and his death.Considering that the book is a translation I think it was very well written, bringing out the past, the present and what happened to Pu Yi at the end of his life. The book is very easy to read considering that it is an autobiography. It has many black and white pictures. This book encouraged me to trace the life of Pu Yi which I was lucky to do,right before Tianmen Square incident.
I hired a Mandarin taxi driver and ask him to take me around and trace Pu Yi's life from the Forbidden City to his last residence.
I went around and did all that. However I was not allowed to go to the Prisons. It is a military area.
I saw the places in the Forbidden City, the house that he lived in after being reformed. The house were he lived with his wife the nurse. Finally I was allowed to go into the cemetery were his remains are in a very small sinnabar wooden box, with a small oval picture, and his name Pu Yi.He is burried way behind the big shots that came and died after him.You must really look to find him.I was lucky enough to do this,as it so happened that the movie of Bertolucci The Last Emperor of China had come out.In China Chinese people love Italians. So when they asked me are you American I said no Italia. They answered ah Marco Polo.Isn't that funny?
I suggest that you read this book if you are fascinated with the Chinese culture. After all what happened, happened and things cannot change. Our daughter also did a paper in High School about the Last Emperor of China using this book as a guide.I hope that this was useful to you,I enjoyed it very much.

3 out of 5 stars Propagandish with bits of history.......2004-08-18

The first half of the book is interesting in that it gives some sense of the way an emperor lived and was influenced by his court and provides a description of historic events by the eyewitness. However, the second part of the book can only be read with a smile by anyone, like myself, who lived in the Soviet Union.

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opening.......2002-03-11

I bought this book at the Forbidden City in Beijing while studying in China. Although the translation is awkward at points, the content is truly eye opening. The story will be familiar to anyone who has seen Bernardo Bertolucci's "The Last Emperor", but the depth to which this autobiographical account takes the reader is far deeper than that of the film. To stand in the Forbidden City and think of the turmoil that was occuring in China at the time of the author, Pu Yi, is truly amazing. I hope that anyone looking to understand the history of China at the turn of the century will try to find this book.

4 out of 5 stars Essencial Reading Only If You Got the Right Edition.......2004-07-07

It is most important to get the edition that has W.J.F. Jenner's introductions and S. Winchester's Afterword rather than the editions by Foreign Language Press, Beijing, if one really wants to know what happened to Pu Yi, the last emperor of China, because those Beijing editions were published under tight control of the Communist Party Propaganda Department. Pricisely because, in this version, i.e. of 1987 from Oxford University Press, Jenner, who in 1964 originally translated this "autobiography" of the Last Emperor entrusted by the Foreign Language Press, revealed such a great deal of truths behind the publication his and his co-editor's additional words have been omitted from the later editions by Foreign Language Press, as a matter of course.

Although many left-wing scholars and journalists have believed that, by the great "thought reform programme" and the "generosity policy" of the Chinese Communist Party, Pu Yi was indeed "re-educated" perfectly and dramatically from an arrogant little tyrant in the Forbidden City to a decent able worker of acquired communism mind, however, in fact, that is not true at all. According to [the fourth wife of Pu Yi's] published account, she found his mouthing of progressive cliches hard to take when he showed hardly any interest in how she had coped during the intervening ten years." (She had not been informed his where-about until then.) Even as late as 1961, two years after Pu Yi's release from the prison, when she had finally got divorce Pu Yi and remarried and had a son, "there was still pressure on her to drop everything and start looking after Pu Yi again, as he was incapable of looking after himself. [......] Even his much-publicised labour in the Botanical Gardens outside Peking was something of a ritual." Pu Yi's final marriage to the fifth wife, who was well-qualified and experienced nurse, was "arranged for him by the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the Communist Party's United Front Department."

"By 1955," Jenner writes, "the authorities had evidently decided that Pu Yi was by now useful for propaganda purposes. [......] Pu Yi's presentation to foreigners as a living advertisement for the People's Government and the Communist Party began in 1956, while he was still in prison; and after his release he was often required to meet foreign visitors to China." He survived the stormy Cultural Revolution not because he became a model citizen and a Communist Party member, but because of "Chou En-lai's intervention, and [because] the local police kept Red Guards away."

As for the "generosity policy" for which Pu Yi and the Japanese inmates expressed their gratefulness, again, it was a mere part of the "thought reform programme" Jenner writes; "The special consideration shown Pu Yi and other high-ranking Manchukuo (sic), Japanese, and Nationalist officials cannot be regarded as typical of Chinese prison conditions. These were all people of potential value in winning over others in future, and political considerations saved them from the harsh justice that many lesser figures received."
According to Chu Ch'u and Hsu Tse, the ex-vice governor and the ex-warder of the Fushun War Criminal Camp, respectively, they actually protested to the prison authority against that too generous treatment for the Manchus and Japanese. The Order was to give them good foods in good amount and good care for their health. No abusive words and no tortures should be given to those "special prisoners". The authority explained; It was the policy of the Chairman Mao and the Premier Chou.
It was, by the way, Mao and Chou who, in July 1950, decided to transfer those Manchus and the randomly selected Japanese kept in slave labour camps in Siberia to China, with an initial idea of Stalin himself.
"To be honest," Chu Ch'u says, "it was only when I heard of those Japanese inmates who were returned to Japan by "amnesty" and formed "the Association of Returnees from China" and have been confessing to the public their "crimes" for the anti-war campaign, I actually realised the true intention of the Premier Chou."

As "Political Imprisonment in the People's Republic of China: An Amnesty International Report" (published in 1978) and "Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism: A Study of 'Brainwashing' in China" by Robert J. Lifton (pub.1961) reveal with their own research with those who were "brainwashed" in those prison camps like one in Fushun, other "non-special" prisoners' treatment in those prisons were severe. Physical and psychological tortures were used to force "self-education" "self-criticism"and "self-condemnation".
It is not, however, that there were no coercions towards those "special prisoners".
Let us not forget that those Manchus and Japanese had been kept in unimaginably harsh condition of Siberian slave labour camps for good 5 years before they were transferred to China. According to the abovementioned ex-officers of Fushun Camp, they seemed to have lost their sound mental health already at that point. After that until their deliberate release in late 50's, while being not allowed to receive any visitors from outside, they were kept in silent but severe psychological coercion; homesickness.
The prison officers and inmate leaders of the "education group" kept telling them that only when they "recognise their horrible crimes and confess them in front of everybody to become a good person and good communist" they would be able to go home to see their beloved families and friends.
Many of members of the "Association of Returnees from China" admit that they did confess those barbaric crimes like "Rape of Nanking" and biological experiments of "Unit 731" and "Three All Policy" just because they wanted to come home. They did it in their so-called "creative activity".

Their "confessions" were published after translated in Chinese and kept in the Social Science Institution in Beijing. What Chinese scholars have been using as "historical material" when they research "Japanese Army's atrocities in the Sino-Japanese war of 1937-1945" are those "confessions". Their works have been regarded as genuine scholarly researches by Western scholars. Now you can see where the fundamental problem lies.

      2 out of 5 stars self-serving.......2002-03-18

As a distant relative of Pu-Yi, I can tell you he is self pitying, self-serving and self-indulgent. He admits no wrongdoing durring his 40 years as Emperor and gives only a line or two to his wife, Empress Wan Jung (or Elizabeth Wan). He talks about himself like he's a hero, when in fact he destroyed his family. Truth is, he wasn't too intelliigent by any standard. Read The Last Emperor by Albert Brachman. Much better.

                      Book Description

Though Mexico is only one-fifth the size of the continental United States, it is home to nearly two-thirds as many freshwater fishes as those that swim the waters of the United States and Canada combined. Mexico's diverse freshwater fauna can be attributed to the country's highly varied physical geography, a wide latitudinal range, the largest river system in middle America, and, ironically, its oceans—many marine groups left the brine for the inland springs and never returned to the sea.

No one knew these Mexican freshwaters or the fish that inhabit them better than the late world-renowned ichthyologist Robert Rush Miller. A pioneer of the field, Miller undertook his first field excursion more than fifty years ago and, in the decades following, amassed the information necessary to write the first encyclopedia of Mexican inland ichthyology. Providing keys to more than 500 native species—accompanied by detailed distribution maps and illustrations—Freshwater Fishes of México offers a historical overview of the country's ichthyology, as well as syntheses of the unique biogeography of Mexican fishes and their current conservation status. Organized by family, the species accounts are supplemented with color galleries containing photographs of live fishes in their native environments and natural habitats. Exploring ecological, biological, and taxonomic issues, the book also considers the evolutionary history of the ichthyofauna itself and the human history of the scientists who researched it during the last several centuries.

The life's work of Robert Rush Miller, the long-awaited Freshwater Fishes of México will be welcomed not only by students of Mexican fishes, but by all ichthyologists working in Central and North America. This book will also find an audience among home aquarium hobbyists, fishery managers, conservation biologists, and environmental planners and managers.

This book is for aquarist or professional ichthyologist. If you are just a beginner in aquarium fish, this book is not for you. If you are a serious aquarist and you are interested by fish from Mexico, buy the book. It's a well of information.

Great book with lots of pictures of species. I hoped that there would be photos for EACH species of fish but there was not. Each fish is documented though even if there is no picture for each. Many species are shown. I still have to give it 5 stars. This book is a great size too. It is not oversized. Perfect for travel.

                      1 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2006-10-07

This book may be of interest to an icthyolgist, but it's not much use to a fisherman. The color illustrations are very poor. They all have a washed out yellowish tint, and thus the illustrated fish tend to look all alike. The non color illustrations are better, but the book relies mostly on descriptions.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensible guide to fish.......2006-03-01

I perform wildlife surveys for corporations all over the east coast. Half the weight of my equipment is Peterson Field Guides, which give me quick and easy identification of flora and fauna found and often eliminates the need for dicotomous keys and microscope work. This particular guide has helped me puzzle out a lot of small fish I come across. Well written, excellant illustrations, an important part of my library.

2 out of 5 stars Far from great.......2004-09-30

This book has some of the worst fish illustrations i have ever seen. Text is far too brief. This volume tries to cover too much and does not cover anything well....

5 out of 5 stars Finishing the Trilogy.......2001-10-30

It might interest the reader of this review (since your looking at the book) to know that while fresh water only represents about 1% of the available aquatic habitat on earth over half of the known species of fish live in it. I'll leave it up to you to find out why. Peterson Field Guides have a winning formula, find an expert, set them up with a good illustrator and see what comes out. This book finishes the trio that covers all of the fishes likely to be encountered by a North American fisherman, diver or naturalist. Like the Fishes of the Atlantic Coast and the Fishes of the Pacific Coast it is well organized, well written, all inclusive (of species) and as informative as space will allow. If you are curious about fishes in general or encounter fresh water fish with any kind of regularity you owe it to yourself to find out what they are. And, if you live in North America you should have this book.

The best part of this book is the pictures. As with many TFH books the promise exceeds the delivery. There is very little information of use to the hobbiest included in this work. So basic a fact as the size the fish reach is missing. Many of the fish shown are never or very rarely available to the hobbiest. Years ago TFH published a book, I beileve the title was "The Fishes of Lake Karibi". This book had nothing to do with the aquarium hobby, but rather was a study of the commercial fishery on this lake. A hobby publisher should publish hobby books and leave text and science books to someone else. Or publish them under another name.

Contains some useful information, but TFH's "Cichlids From Central America" book, by Ad Konings, is MUCH better.

                                    Product Description

The authors, both with extensive field experience in Belize and its environs, have compiled the first guide to the frogs and toads of this region. This book describes species encountered in Belize and nearby Mexico and Guatemala. Global concern over declining amphibian populations has heightened interest in these fascinating creatures. Some, such as the red-eyed treefrog, are well known to amateurs, while a few have just recently become known to science. All 33 species, as well as the major habitat types in Belize, are illustrated in color. Belize, with its lush forests, is the destination of thousands of travelers annually; this book will be of interest to them, as well as to amateur and professional herpetologists, and those armchair naturalists who appreciate the rich diversity of the tropics.
