A brilliant and practical book.......2006-07-07
Customer equity gurus Rust & Lemon provide a thorough explanation of customer equity, going far beyond their "Driving Customer Equity" book in detail. The relationship management/CRM sections reflect the expertise of Harvard guru Narayandas. A company can use this book to learn how to effectively implement the customer equity perspective in their company.
This book is not a how to.......2005-03-23
I had to use this book for an MBA CRM class. I can safely say that everyone taking the course dislikes this book. The book has a very narrow approach to CRM - based on one single academic study. In addition, this study (by the authors) seems very remote from actual business practices. For example, how could one collect reasonably and systematically the kind of data that are necessary to populate their model for decision making? Having been working in a CRM function of a large financial institution, I would call the authors suggestions ivory tower wishful thinking.

Too Sensational: On the Choice of Exchange Rate Regimes (Ohlin Lectures)
ASIN: 0881323365 |
Book Description
In this analysis, Morris Goldstein examines currency-regime choices for emerging economies that are heavily involved with private capital markets. The author argues that the best regime choice for such economies would be managed floating plus, where "plus" is shorthand for a framework that includes inflation targeting and aggressive measures to discourage currency mismatching. Goldstein argues that if managed floating were enhanced in this way, it would retain the desirable features of a flexible rate regime while addressing the nominal anchor and balance-sheet problems that have historically underpinned a "fear of floating" and handicapped the performance of managed floating in emerging economies. The author also shows why managed floating plus is superior to four alternative currency-regime optionsan adjustable peg system, a "BBC (basket, band, crawl) regime," a currency board, and dollarization.

Book Description
Over the last fifteen years the world's largest developing countries have initiated market reforms in their electric power sectors from generation to distribution. This book evaluates the experiences of five of those countries - Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa - as they have shifted from state-dominated systems to schemes allowing for a larger private sector role. As well as having the largest power systems in their regions and among the most rapidly rising consumption of electricity in the world, these countries are the locus of massive financial investment and the effects of their power systems are increasingly felt in world fuel markets. In-depth case studies also reveal important variations in reform efforts. This accessible volume explains the origins of these reform efforts and offers a theory as to why - despite diverse backgrounds - reform efforts in all five countries have stalled in similar ways.

Product Description
Analysis of the distributional impact of policy reforms plays an important role in the elaboration and implementation of poverty reduction strategies in developing and transitional countries, promoting evidence-based policy choices and fostering debate on policy reform options. International agencies and national partners are increasingly encouraging a more systematic application of policy reform analysis. Requisite to a systematic application is capacity building within countries as well as within donor agencies. Tools for Institutional, Political, and Social Analysis of Policy Reform: A Sourcebook for Development Practitioners contributes to this agenda by introducing a framework and a set of practical tools that analyze the institutional, political, and social dimensions of policy design and implementation. The authors fill a perceived gap in knowledge of the application of social tools and complement existing guidance on conventional economic analysis of distributional impacts of reform. This book will be of interest to commissioners and practitioners working in policy analysis in a range of areas-including macroeconomic, sectoral, and public sector policy-that are subject to ongoing policy reform discussions.

disappointing.......2004-05-31
This book is often thought-provoking, but ultimately too shallow. Too many of its conclusions are just stated without enough justification. Although not quite as quick to read, Stiglitz' "Globalization and its discontents" goes much deeper and has a more balanced point of view.
Timely thoughts from a real economist.......2000-03-28
Free thinking economists such as Mr Chossudovsky are few and far between. Please take the time to read about the reality of what we have been lured into.
Very Good thoughts on the eve of the Millennium.......1999-10-27
These are some wonderful thougts that have stimulated my mind into asking the question "CanAfricansThink?".This book exposes the disguise of mainstream economics which leaves human society's precious values at the hands of economic lust. All Africans need to know about this big con job being operated under the disguise of macro economics.
A devastating critique of neoliberalism.......1999-05-02
Looking at case studies from around the developing world, backed up with a strong theoretical analysis of the IMF and World Bank's role in the international economy, the globalisation of poverty brings the reader to one stark conclusion: 'Poverty is an input on the supply side, (of the global economy.)' Particularly interesting is Chossudovsky's explanation of the economic 'miracle' of Vietnam, while his analysis of the Yugoslav disaster, co-sponsored by the IMF and international financial investors, is very timely indeed. As Chossudovsky explains, the IMF and World Bank reforms have not merely suppressed populist and socialist economic measures and achievements; they have also prevented the development of national capitalisms, by creating economies directed towards the needs of the capitalist core states, rather than to the national market. For those harbouring any illusions about the economic order which governs humanity at the end of this century, this book is a necessary read. It's a pity that Chossudovsky works at the University of Ottawa and not the LSE, an institution that definitely needs realistic economists like him.

Book Description
Fiscal Reform and Structural Change in Developing Countries analyzes the experience of countries involved in major tax reforms in the 1980s and first half of the 1990s by a combination of qualitative and quantitative country studies and over-arching thematic studies. The emphasis is on the role of fiscal reform in stabilization and structural change, as well as the effects that policy for stabilization and, especially, structural change can have on the fiscal deficit under different types of tax systems. The contributors then analyze the reasons for the convergence of tax systems around the developing world.

Book Description
During the last twenty-five years there has been a widespread move toward more market-oriented policies and institutions across the developing and former socialist countries, usually in the context of more politically open societies. The most remarkable fact of this movement is that while policies have often been quite similar, results have been very different. Thirty-one country studies, relying heavily on a political economy analysis, were undertaken to try to understand these divergent results. In this book the findings of these studies are synthesized on a regional and global basis. Three of the case studies are also included.

Product Description
The analysis of the distributional impact of policy reforms on the well-being or welfare of different stakeholder groups, particularly on th e poor and vulnerable, has an important role in the elaboration and implementation of poverty reduction strategies in developing countries. In recent years this type of work has been labeled as Poverty and Social Impact Analysis (PSIA) and is increasingly implemented to promote evidence-based policy choices and foster debate on policy reform options. While information is available on the general approach, techniques, and tools for distributional analysis, each sector displays a series of specific characteristics. These have implications for the analysis of distributional impacts, including the types of impacts and transmission channels that warrant particular attention, the tools and techniques most appropriate, the data source typically utilized, and the range of political economy factors most likely to affect the reform process. This volume provides an overview of the specific issues arising in the analysis of the distributional impacts of policy and institutional reforms in selected sectors. Each chapter offers guidance on the selection of tools and techniques most adapted to the reforms under scrutiny, and offers examples of applications of these approaches. This is a companion to the first volume, which offers guidance on trade, monetary and exchange rate policy, utility provision, agricultural markets, land policy, and education. Also includes a CD-ROM containing chapters from companion volume 1, the PSIA User's Guide, Good Practice Note, E-learning course, and links to resources.
Customer Reviews:
scan the sectors.......2006-10-01
Across different countries and economies, the World Bank has put out this study of the efficacies of many reforms undertaken. For pensions, both provided by the state and by private companies. For the labour market, in such aspects like the setting and adjusting of a minimum wage and the providing of unemployment benefits. Very contentious public issues in many countries. Where the providing of a social safety net might be widely approved. But where there might also be concern about the arising of a permanent underclass, dependent on and devoted to handouts.
The health sector also takes up a significant amount of the book's discussion. Here, issues of gender arise. Where women might not have adequate access to treatments in some countries, due to discrimination.

Book Description
Batley and Larbi examine how governments of developing countries are organized to deliver public services. The book is based on comparative international studies of four service sectors: healthcare, urban water, business promotion and agricultural marketing. Governments everywhere are being driven to adopt an "indirect" approach--managing, contracting and regulating public agencies or private partners, rather than providing services directly. It questions how governments are responding and whether this approach is appropriate to the capacities of developing countries.
