5 out of 5 stars Fraud ID Handbook review.......2004-09-08

This is a review of many different types of fraud. It is perhaps most applicable for a course in school. To make it more interesting in the next edition, I recommend that the author tie the fraud to the penalties and the likely liability of perpetrators, chances of getting caught, and more anecdotes about criminal cases brought to conclusion, and details about how the prosecutors operate. The (surprising) general idea I get from the book is that fraud is rampant and seldom discovered. The collection of estimates about the society-wide costs of fraud at the end of the book is fascinating, as is the history of fraud at the beginning.

      4 out of 5 stars very informative.......2003-01-07

I am a investigator for the U.S. gov't. This book is very informative. The book I believe, is not meant to be read cover to cover. Instead it is more like a ref. guide to all types of fraud. Very good book. I'm glad I have this in my library.

4 out of 5 stars Avoid victimization by fraud, consult this book.......2002-11-02

I hear or read about fraud everyday--it?s scary. Not wanting to become a victim, I got The Fraud Identification Handbook, one of the most reasonably priced books on fraud available. Every type of fraud--that I can think of--is covered.

Before I bought a house, I read the Read Estate Fraud section, which prompted me to check a broker?s license history. Following the Handbook?s recommendation, I avoided dealing with someone who had a history of complaints.

I am considering having work done on my home, and I am so glad I consulted the section on Home Repair Fraud first. I will not do business with a contractor who demands some up-front payment.

Clearly well researched, all of the supporting examples of fraud are referenced. Tips on prevention follow each section, lending credence to the author?s expertise on the subject. I can recommend this book to others who want to be aware of and avoid fraud.

      2 out of 5 stars This is NOT a 5-Star Book!.......2002-10-03

I don't understand how the other reviewers could give this book 5 stars!

      The book IS definitely comprehensive.

It is poorly edited. For example the author does not know the difference between effect and affect.

It is repetitious. Many sentences/paragraphs are repeated throughout the book.

Worst of all, it is dull.

It is NOT a bad book. But it's not very good, either. Strictly mediocre.

5 out of 5 stars "A great, comprehensive book on Fraud!".......1999-08-18

As a Federal Investigator, I have certainly read my fair share of Criminal Justice books, however, this book is different, unique, and down right better. It is a must read for anyone working in or wanting to become familiar with aspects of Fraud. This is one of the best practical books I have read on Criminal Justice and Fraud. As one can imagine, with a Degree in Criminal Justice I have read too many books on the subject, yet this book is definitely more practical and has a wider scope of use than most books in the Criminal Justice/Fraud realm. This book is not just for the Criminal Justice professional, but rather anyone who would like to protect themselves from being a victim of fraud.

      Book Description

It's None of Your Business is the most consumer-friendly, powerful, and informative book written on protecting and regaining your privacy. It points out not only the problems associated with our loss of privacy, but includes literally a warehouse of strategies and solutions. The book also addresses those most at risk, including women, the elderly, victims of stalkers, and those with significant assets. It contains complete sections discussing what to do in the home, at work, in public, in school, on the Internet, on the phone, at the bank, at a store, using the mail, dealing with insurance companies, travel, and investing. It provides extensive background material showing where the risks are, how to minimize them, and how to develop a plan of action to protect yourself, your identity, your credit, and your family. The author also provides incredible insight into the root causes of the problem, showing government and big business plans for the future in a cash-less society, where the government has instant access to your bank account and big business controls everything you are allowed to purchase. He comments on the collusion between business and government for complete control of your health care, finances, employment, transportation, education, social, and professional life, and even where you live. The greatest value of the book however, is that it is crammed with solutions, from controlling who has access to information about your private life and where you live, to what information goes into the major data banks, to what to do to protect your assets. Strategies are spelled out in layman's terms that everyone can understand. Unlike many books that give out a little information and leave you needing more, this book provides details about how to control the dissemination of every type of personal information you can imagine. It also contains an excellent resource section listing dozens of books, organizations, web sites, and newsletters to keep you informed and to help with your personal plan of action.

Because the author has spent over 15 years in the database consulting business, he is well versed in the potential for errors in huge data files that are kept on everyone. He addresses the problem of finding the files containing your personal data and then how difficult it is to extract information from them whether they be in big business or government agencies' computers. He notes that it is easy to get into a database, but very difficult, if not impossible, to get out of one. He also discusses how difficult it is to correct information that is contained therein. He includes strategies for improving the accuracy of personal data files and ways of stopping the addition of new data into the files. He also includes a discussion of the Y2K computer bug and its impact on the proliferation of inaccurate data. He suggests ways of preparing yourself and your family so that necessary information is available to medical personnel or financial institutions should data be lost or made unavailable because of loss of electricity or other essential services. Because data in these huge files is so important and yet so difficult to monitor, the author provides a wide range of options and strategies to take back control of one's personal information, so that it is accessible to them and truly their own, not subject to the whims and mistakes of large impersonal bureaucracies. He also discusses in great detail how to protect personal data on one's own computer so that it is not available to everyone else and so that it is safe from viruses and other programs that are capable of stealing or altering it when the owner is unaware. He suggests a variety of programs and strategies that anyone can implement at low cost to protect themselves while surfing the Internet or doing other online transactions.

Not only are there strategies for taking back control of personal information, but the author delves into the larger issues of freedom and control. He provides great insight into the inner workings of business and government agencies, showing their true plans and schemes for the manipulation of the consumer. He shows how you can short circuit these plans so that you can lead a life of your own choosing, free from dictatorial controls and constraints. He provides information about private banking, health care, employment, investing, and normal everyday purchases. Because most people are unaware of the myriad of resources out there for providing everyday needs without public disclosure to the world, the author lists dozens of ways the average person can live their life completely normal, but without revealing to the world all the intimate details, thereby maintaining the right to make their own decisions about what is right for themselves and their families. No other book does such a complete job of providing strategies and plans for gaining back control of one's own identity and life.

1 out of 5 stars A Political Soliloquy. Not one useful idea about privacy. .......2006-01-18

Don't waist your money. From cover to cover Larry Sontag tells about who is watching and how these evil men will use this information against you. I wouldn't mind that if he gave one useful bit of information on how to avoid the problem. I would recommend "How To Be Invisible" by J.J. Luna or "Bulletproof Privacy" by Boston T. Party (although it is out of date, he still gives good advice.) Also "You and the Police" by Boston T. Party is a valuable read.

5 out of 5 stars Very Well Written.......2003-04-06

In a field of poorly written and researched books, this one has an abundance of detailed info on what's going on in the world of personal privacy. Maybe he includes a bit too much revolutionary political zeal, but I found a great deal of practical guidance I can use to secure my private life in these rapidly changing times.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!.......2002-08-23

This isn't for the paranoid. Its for those who aren't paranoid enough.

      This one is a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars A user friendly guide to privacy!.......2001-12-09

I have read and re-read this practical and very useful book. I continue to reference it regularly and have implimented many of the techniques Sontag recommends. His suggestions regarding computer security have been particularly useful and his in-depth knowledge of banking and finance are right on! I highly recommend buying this valuable book.

5 out of 5 stars Must-have for any one concerned with privacy in their lives.......1999-03-17

This eye-opening and extremely informative book accomplishes two things. First, it alerts the reader to the incredible amount of privacy we sacrifice in our daily personal and business lives. More importantly, you will learn what to do about it! The revelation for me was the fact that privacy and convenience are usually inversely proportional. So some of the tips and techniques will have you saying "oh darn - I can't do that anymore!" However, when you truly realize that most of your life is an open book for anyone who wishes to pry into it - you'll feel enlightened and empowered by the vast amount of information this book contains. It runs the gamut from issues regarding privacy at work, financial affairs, computer, communications, and more. There is also an excellent resource section at the end to enable you to explore further into the world of privacy. Whether you're concerned about Big Brother, being stalked, or simply of the mind that in this technology age it's increasingly vital to keep one's business private and secure, None Of Your Business is a must read.

        Book Description

Our lives are all affected by three hugely powerful and well financed, but undemocratic, organizations: the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization. These institutions share a common ideology. They aggressively promote "corporate" capitalism, neoliberalism, giving free rein to the interests of a small number of transnational corporations. This book presents the history and fundamental ideas of this economic ideology. Describing each member of the "unholy trinity," it shows how neoliberalism hijacked the IMF, World Bank and WTO in relation to their global financial, development and trade management roles.

        5 out of 5 stars Whose Hitler?.......2007-04-04

In a word, if you like living in a sovereign nation, then write your Congressional representive, your Senators, and have the US removed from these organizations. There is a real bad element here. World domination bad.

5 out of 5 stars good class action.......2005-10-03

This is what university work should be like: a professor leading a group of studnets in common action and collectieley publishing their work. Well done. Lots of good points which the unholy trinity should answer in some forum or other. All three organs are dominated by the US as Stiglitz, Bellamy and others have pointed out. Whether US hegemony is a good or bad thing is a different question.
I felt the book could have done without Foucault, who has little to contribute on the parameters of discourse or much else. The fact is the budgets of these institutions dwarf all others and it makes a welcome change to see an articulate counter point of view, especially as it was a grassroots student project. Definitely worth a read.

4 out of 5 stars good overview of the IMF, World Bank & WTO.......2005-03-29

Any one looking for a good, critical overview of the history of the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and World Trade Organization--the major institutions of international economic governance, the institutional guardians and promoters of neoliberal globalization--should check this book out. It reviews the history of these three organizations in depth. Most analyses of these organizations that I've seen just look at their current policies and critique them. Peet (and the junior student authors who assisted him) add a great deal of historical depth to this, looking at the conditions under which the unhol trinity were founded at the end of World War II, how their missions have changed over time, and the power structures in which these organizations are embedded and part of. He looks at how the changing ways the US government has used these organizations to advance the interests of the US political-economic elite (what Peet et al. call the Washington-Wall Street Alliance) on the world stage. This book also provides a progressive critique of their impact, although other sources probably go into deeper depth on that score. Since Peet is a social scientist, he doesn't just put the problem down to bad intentions, but down to bad social structures--a refreshing change from some of the simple-minded demonization of the elite you can find in some quarters. Peet particularly analyzes how the role of people's beliefs in shaping their actions within these institutions. In some ways, this is the weakest part of the book. He tries to use an analysis of discourse a la Foucault to explain the working of these organizations, explaining how the hegemony of neoclassical economics shuts out any debates of alternatives. While this is valuable, discourse analysis along can not bear the full weight of analyzing the problems with the unholy trinity--you need some sort of political-economic analysis in the lines of world-systems theory or something to make full sense of these organizations. Indeed, Peet lays out his Foucauldian analysis in the first chapter--and then those ideas barely show up again. Honestly, I would suggest anyone who's not an academic just skip the first chapter and read the rest of the book. You won't miss much. After the first chapter though, the book provides a solid overview of the history of the IMF, World Bank and WTO--and through them much of the process of globalization.

5 out of 5 stars The Politics of Writing.......2004-05-19

The Writers of books like Unholy Trnity make very little money for their hard work (usually a few hundred dollars a year for 3-4 years). They write books like this out of political commitment. And then people like "Not Right" (though he or she probably is, Right Wing) criticize the author for responding to an obviously political critique! This book, as the Publishers Weekly review says, provides a scholarly grounding for the anti-WTO, IMF and World Bank protests. The group of students and faculty who worked on it did a splendid job. Read it and you will see.

        1 out of 5 stars Not Right.......2004-05-11

I think that it is pathetic for one of the authors to actually review and rate his own book. It seems as if this person is obsessed with selling as many copies of his book as possible. This type of greed is exactly what he pretends to be writing against. It is also wrong for someone (perhaps also one of the authors), to attack another reviewer, just because he/she did not like the book. These things say a lot about the author/s of this volume.

          Book Description

Global Business Today has become an established text in the International Business market for its excellent, but concise coverage of the key global issues including the cultural context for global business, cross-border trade and investment, the global monetary system and competition in the global environment. GBT's concise chapters give a general introduction to international business - emphasizing the environmental factors, with less coverage of operations.

Charles Hill is renowned for his attention to research trends and that is evident in GBT through a variety of real world examples and cases from small, medium, and large companies throughout the world.

          1 out of 5 stars Global Business.......2007-09-24

Well normally I would give it a much better review but I never got my product!!!

          3 out of 5 stars OK Product.......2007-02-07

The product was okay. I accidentally ordered the wrong book, but it's really not that bad.

          3 out of 5 stars good book, I guess.......2007-02-03

I got this book cause it was cheaper to buy it from amazon than through the campus bookstore. I didn't care for content.

          1 out of 5 stars Deceived.......2007-01-12

The seller stated book was new. It had wear on it and the front page was cut out where the CD should have been. I was very dissappointed in the condition. It was too late to return it as class was starting.
This is the only time I was ever disappointed. Usually extremely satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Good inexpensive text for International Business.......2004-05-01

I use this as a text for an undergrad capstone course in International Business Strategy. Hill is co-author of a fine Strategic Management text, and much of the treatment in that text is evident here.

The underlying economic arguments for firm behavior in their international and global activities are well presented. I ask my students to look over the concepts presented in this text, and then apply them to HBS case studies we discuss together in class.

Compared to alternative texts on interntional/global strategy from George Yip (Global Strategy 2/E), or either of two from Bartlett and Ghoshal (Managing across Borders, 2/E, or Multinational Management), this one is more digestible for undergrads (vs. the MBA or other grad level courses these other texts appear to be targeting). It also makes a nice text for Intro to International Business undergrad courses.

If you can order the text without the CD-ROM (unless you want to assign an international business plan, of course), all the better.

For an overview of IB with grounding in the economics/strategy vein, there are few better texts. This one is also better value for the money than most out there, which your students will thank you for.

            Book Description

The book proposes a monetary policy regime that is suitable for the European Periphery on the road to the euro. The first part examines the relation between the eleven founding members of the EMU and countries staying out of the EMU - paying particular attention to the European Periphery that includes Greece and all those CEE transition countries which have recently applied for EU membership. The second part of the book argues against ERM-II participation for those countries. It stresses the limits in efficiency of an ERM-II arrangement in a world of increased international capital movements, fiscal imbalances, and asymmetric real shocks. The third part offers a consistent and credible monetary framework for the achievement of price stability at the European Periphery: adoption of explicit and formal inflation targets together with political and economic independence of the central bank.
