5 out of 5 stars This is the BEST book on customer service!.......1999-05-11

Over 10 customer service experts offer their advice and experience in this easy-to-follow book. I have read many customer services books/manuals in the past and expected this one to be a mirror of others. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount and quality of information that Celebrate Customer Services covers. I went back and looked at my business with new insight. I found several areas that were being overlooked by my staff, but I am sure my customers noticed our short-comings. I highly recommend this book to everyone in business!

    Book Description

The countries of East and Southeast Asia have the world's most dynamic money markets. Essential to the Asian economy, their performance plays a crucial role in the successful development of other financial markets, such as those for business and consumer loans. This original study of the effect of government policy on the performance of money markets in the economies of this region (Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and South Korea) is the only comprehensive book addressing this topic available today. Individual chapters were written by experts in the field, and were guided by a common research methodology. This book will be of great value to Pacific Basin specialists, bankers, academics, and public policy planners in finance.

      Book Description

The histories of money and the market are closely interlinked. The nine essays in this volume provide a sense of diverse voices in debate which has hitherto been portrayed somewhat monolithically. These essays also demonstrate that a great deal of regional variation exists in terms of both monetary history and economic history in general.

        Description:
This paper expands on the work of Sarno and Taylor [1999. Hot money, accounting labels and the permanence of capital flows to developing countries: an empirical investigation. Journal of Development Economics 59, 337-364; Moral hazard, asset price bubbles, capital flows, and the East Asian crisis: the first tests. Journal of International Money and Finance 18, 637-657] by developing an IMF-induced creditor moral hazard framework in stock markets under alternative assumptions of asset price bubbles and domestic implicit guarantees. To do so, it employs IMF-related news associated with program negotiations and program approval. Using daily stock returns for Indonesia and Korea, we estimate the changes in stock returns in response to IMF-related news during the Asian crisis period. Some of the results regarding Korea and, to a lesser extent, Indonesia are consistent with the creditor moral hazard interpretation that assumes implicit guarantees and asset price bubbles. bles.

          Description:
In this study, a conditional version of the international CAPM for Asian markets is tested using a parsimonious generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model in which the risk premia, betas and correlations vary through time. The results show that unlike the static CAPM, the time-varying CAPM prices market risk. Cross-country correlations increase toward the Asian crisis in mid 1997. The price of covariance risk appears to be higher for emerging markets than the industrialized markets The impulse response functions of the time-varying price of covariance variables from the VAR model estimations show that movements in the price of covariance risk belonging to the U.S. or an Asian emerging market can be contagious with varying degrees of strength in the region.

            Description:
This study investigates returns and volatilities transmission across Greater China's four emerging stock markets and three developed international markets, Tokyo, London, and New York. Using daily open and close price data from 1994 to 2001, we provide empirical evidence that the overnight returns on all the Greater China stock indices can be estimated by using information from at least one of the three developed markets' daytime returns. The contemporaneous return spillovers are in general unidirectional from more advanced major international markets to the Chinese markets. However, split-sample analysis suggests that there is also evidence of bi-directional return spillovers after the 1997 Asian financial crisis. We also find that there are no one-period lagged return spillover effects from the three advanced markets to the Chinese markets, except for Taiwan. Finally, Mainland China's two stock markets are not affected by contemporaneous nor delayed ''bad news''.

              Description:
The paper is an empirical study on contagion during the 1997-1998 Asian crisis. In line with Sander and Kleimeier [Sander, H., Kleimeier, S., 2003. Contagion and causality: an empirical investigation of four Asian crisis episodes. International Financial Markets, Institution and Money 13, 171-186], Granger causality among Asian economies on sovereign debt market is tested. Using a new measure of causality, we attempt to show the existence of shift contagion defined as significant differences in cross-markets links between tranquil and crisis periods. Firstly, non-existent links during the tranquil period play a key role during the crisis. Secondly, causality directions give evidence of the major influence of the South Korean crisis which seems to prevail on investors to reassess the whole region.

                Description:
We study the long-run and short-run dynamics between stock prices and exchange rates and the channels through which exogenous shocks impact on these markets by using cointegration methodology and multivariate Granger causality tests. We apply the analysis to a group of Pacific Basin countries over the period 1980-1998. The evidence suggests that stock and foreign exchange markets are positively related and that the US stock market acts as a conduit for these links. Furthermore, these links are not found to be determined by foreign exchange restrictions. Finally, through the application of recursive estimation the evidence shows that the financial crisis had a temporary effect on the long-run comovement of these markets.

                  Description:
Currently, there exists relatively little research on the influence that the 1997 Asian financial crisis has had upon capital flows within the property market and the associated long-run implications of it. This paper examines the impact that the crisis has had upon the integration and dynamic links between a number of Asia-Pacific real estate markets. The results show that Asia-Pacific property markets are integrated, despite a structural shift occurring at the time of the crisis. These results are a particularly important finding for fund managers concerned with the impact of globalization on the performance of their real estate portfolios, showing that in the Asia-Pacific region diversification benefits are actually less than that suggested by an analysis incorrectly ignoring the crisis.

                    Description:
We discuss the prospects for Chinese money market development and transition to market-based monetary policy operations based on a comparative historical analysis of the present Chinese situation and the development in 11 European countries from 1979 up to the launch of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Central banks in the latter group of countries typically had an incentive to encourage the formation of efficient benchmark segments in the domestic money markets for the conduct of open market operations as traditional quantity-oriented instruments became increasingly ineffective. China is displaying many of the same symptoms as the European countries in the 1970s and 1980s, including poor monetary transmission due to excess liquidity and conflicts of interest due to unclear priority among multiple policy goals. We conclude that in a number of aspects, current Chinese monetary policy operations are counter-productive to efforts to develop an efficient money market that can serve as arena for an effective market-based monetary policy, and provide policy recommendations.

                        Book Description

Russia's struggle to build a market economy on the ruins of central planning has been strongly criticized by Western observers. A paper by the World Bank's chief economist, Joseph Stiglitz, entitled "Whither Reform?" contains a set of 'accusations' representative of this trend. Mau uses the arguments contained in Stiglitz's paper to reflect on the Russian transformation. He shows that most of the criticisms originate from a complete ignorance of the transformation that Russia had to undertake, and argues that this transformation has actually been a revolution.

The book has become my table-book.
Got confused with wording??? It just takes second to get the full definition.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference material.......2007-09-10

This is the best reference for the securities industry. I am new to the industry but in a high level position. This is the book that our Complance officer is using to bring me up to speed on terminology and concepts. Better than a textbook. Just remember that it is basically a dictionary -NOT a textbook - so if you need a textbook I would suggest getting this as a supplement to it.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference tool for your desk.......2007-07-13

I've been in banking for over 12 years and I still run into words and phrases that are sometimes unfamiliar to me. This book has been a handy tool on my desk--colleagues have come by to use it. If you work in banking or finance, or are a student majoring in similar fields, I would suggest that you make this essential to your portfolio of tools that you use.

4 out of 5 stars Useful, small, light...........2007-05-13

It helped me on several occasions. There are, however, terms that are not defined, so I need to refer to the internet for those. Overall, a good deal....

4 out of 5 stars COVERED GENERAL BUSINESS; NOT JUST FINANCE AND INVESTMENT.......2005-11-10

Despite being called "Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms", this dictionary not only covered finance and investing, by cut across every aspect of general business. Its extensive coverage of management, accounting, marketing, advertising, and real estate makes it really unnecessary for anyone who already owns it to be bothering about acquiring any other business dictionary. Also, its encroaching expansion into computer and internet terms is both commendable and valuable.
All of its terms have been revised and simplified, using everyday language. And, a rare combination of quality and low price ensures that the demand for this dictionary will continue to dominate those of its rivals. Its 736 pages, which hold more than 5000 definitions remained astonishingly compact, authoritative, refined, and very concise. It is indeed a true hard-to-beat choice!

If you are looking for a resource that explains the various methods of charitable giving and can be used to help donors (or beginning development professionals) determine which is the best approach or instrument for their personal use, "Investing in Charity" can be a most helpful addition to your library.

The authors promote the book by claiming it is written for modest as well as wealthy donors. Personally, I believe this book can best be used to help donors who are considering "major" gifts or who plan to make a large number of significant gifts. The book can help them determine how to maximize the impact of their giving for their favorite charities and themselves. Even though the introductory chapters on donor motivation, selecting a charity and how charities function are too simplistic for a major donor, the rest of the book can be very valuable as it relates to the various methods of giving.

I especially liked the way the authors go into detail on planned gifts, trusts, and annuities. They give excellent explanations of the variety, benefits and liabilities of each method, from the perspective of the charity and the donor. The sections on tax implications are also presented in clear and helpful terms.

Equally helpful, are their chapters on Private Foundations, Supporting Organizations and Donor-Advised Philanthropic Funds.

Planned giving, estate planning, trusts, gifts of closely held stock, gifts of non cash assets, insurance, etc. can be complicated and overwhelming. Helping a potential donor understand how they work and the benefits of these instruments could turn, what would have been a 5 figure gift, into a 6 or 7 figure gift.

Each chapter ends with a helpful checklist and series of questions which can help direct the donor to the sources contained therein. In addition, examples are given of specific language which can be used for those who want to deed property or make testamentary gifts. Helpful information is also given on the use of charitable giving as a tool to enhance retirement planning.

An extensive index at the end, adds to the usefulness of the book as a resource guide.

This book will get good use in my library. I give it 4 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Accurate, But Dull and Incomplete.......2001-10-03

This book does enable donors to learn and accurately negotiate the technical details of sophisticated charitable giving, but it stops short of really guiding or "empowering" them. For one, it fails to celebrate and build upon the motivating excitement of why donors give and how the nonprofit sector is so vital and inspiring. Example: The words policy or advocacy are never mentioned as charitable options or types of programs. It's a dull read: donors must practice "due diligence." The message: giving money away is such hard, complicated, serious boring work you will wonder what happened to the joy of giving and the joy of charitable results. Second, the authors inexplainably ignore the option of using community foundations. Third, much valuable information is omitted: There isn't any mention of the many services of the Council of Foundations or similar helpful organizations. Are 501(c)(4) organizations eligible for gifts? We're not told. In the whole text I could find only two web sites mentioned! Nor does the book offer any referral section or recommended reading. Venture philanthropy - no mention! Fourth, instructing donors they "must" visit the charity's site, meet its executive team, AND examine all its core literature before deciding to give is extreme. Ugh.
