"The author suggests ways that librarians and educators can attract preadolescent boys to library programs that are built on the unique developmental needs and interests of boys in the 'tween years. The goal of these programs is to create and maintain in this age group an interest in books and reading that will last a lifetime." (summary by South TX Library System)
This fills a need for librarians trying to target this hard-to-reach audience.
Why is it important? Check out these dismal statistics:
Boys are generally 1½ year behind girls in reading.
Girls at the age of 15 read twice as much as boys.
80% of high school dropouts are male.
95% of hyperactive elementary students are male.
85% of special education students are male.

      Book Description

If you are a new young adult librarian or an experienced librarian with little time to plan and execute programs for teens, this book is for you! For each month in the calendar year, two or three programs popular with teens are presented with instructions, sample flyers, letters, and checklists. From simple programs such as a candy raffle to more complex programs such as a mystery night, librarians can keep their teen calendar full of activities with a minimum of effort. Programs that tie into both school events and national events for teens are included as well as those that can be presented at an individual library. Suggestions for programs range from a poetry contest to a summer job program. Instructions for ongoing procedures for soliciting teens' opinions are provided: a monthly question board, candy raffle, starting and running a Teen Advisory Board and so on. Basic skills for all YA librarians are emphasized in each of the programs; these skills include booktalking, working with the schools, and marketing your programs within the library and to the community. By creating variations in each of the programs, young adult librarians will have a wealth of ideas in this book to keep their YA program calendar filled for years to come.

                Book Description

What's the difference between a teen book club and an adult one? Too often, the answer is "Not much". Like so many programs for teens, traditional book clubs tend to be scaled-down versions of adult clubs. If book selection, taboo topics, and logistical details are the most important things that set your teen book club apart from an adult one, you could be missing a huge opportunity. Vibrant, dynamic teen book clubs--the kind teens eagerly anticipate and attend session after session--are teen-centered. They're not merely "by, for and about teens," but are grounded in the admittedly radical idea that the club is not primarily about library programming or even about books (!) but is all about teens--their interests and needs, their social habits and styles, their initiative. Books are the medium and the club is the method to achieve the ultimate goal of developing teen readers and leaders. Furthermore, the teen-centered book club has huge potential to further a whole range of library goals, from bringing more teen patrons through the door, to building community-wide awareness and support for the library itself. What sets this book apart from the typical book club guide is that it is the only guide that addresses the unique constraints of public and school libraries--budgeting, impact on the facility and the collection, and potential attempts at censorship, to name just a few. It's also the only guide that takes a teen-centered approach, putting front-and-center the idea that, as with so many other things, book clubs for teens are not merely scaled-back versions of adult clubs. Whether you are starting a club, attempting to revive a flagging program, or building on past success, this manual offers you innovative, pragmatic ideas that will attract and retain teen readers. Grades 6-12. Teen Book Clubs offers a fresh new approach for today's teen readers and clear instructions, along with tips and ideas, for building teen-centered book clubs. In 12 brief chapters the book covers: the teen-centered book club: what it is and what it takes to make it work putting it together: planning and putting the plan in action going public: recruiting, boosting visibility, garnering support 15 cunningly creative types of teen book clubs using book club to develop teen leaders scads of book lists, reproducibles, and sample discussion prompters tweaking, troubleshooting, and tips for keeping it civilized evaluations beyond measure resources for more information. Filled with practical checklists, figures, worksheets, and reproducibles, this is the guide that all teen book club leaders should have.

                    Book Description

Opportunities for growth and investment in Central America could well improve in the coming years, as the region's ties with the world economy grow closer. This integration, however, also presents important challenges for economic policy to ensure that growth can be sustained and can benefit the poor. This book stresses the importance of keeping fiscal policy on a sustainable path, strengthening public investment in basic infrastructure and primary health care and primary and secondary education, and managing the risks associated with partial dollarization.

I traveled to Mexico with Dr. Heusinkveld as a participant on one of her study abroad trips to the city where she wrote the book. I soon found out that not only is the book a must read for anyone interested in visiting or doing business in Mexico, but that the information that was published over 10 years ago is still very accurate in much of the country.

The book is a very easy read and not long at all. Its small size is very deceptive because the book is crammed with information that one should not go without.

Do not travel to Mexico without this book.

I love this book, as much for its conciseness and economy of words as well as all the sensitively considered advice and invaluable tips.
Though it is a deceptively thin book, it seems to touch on all areas of likely concern to one who visits or moves to Mexico. I wouldn't travel to Mexico without it, now.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED--should be required reading for every American so they have a better understanding of our neighbors to the south. I bought this when I first met my wife who is from Mexico. I found it very enlightening and worth every cent. It's easy to read since it is not in-depth, however, it is still very enlightening. It talks about real Mexico and real Mexicans--not the life and culture that surrounds resorts. It may need to be updated (10 years old) cause the youth in Mexico are greatly influenced by media (TV, movies, etc) today just as American youth are--however, it still provides great insight of where Mexicans are coming from.

2 out of 5 stars OK if you've never been to Mexico..........2003-05-20

...but if you know anything at all about the culture or have visited non-tourist spots you probably know a lot of this stuff already. I'm looking for something more in-depth, so I didn't find this book very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars There'd be less misunderstanding if more of us read this gem.......2003-04-24

I've read and re-read this short book, and it has helped me tremendously to understand Mexico and Mexicans. Their culture is different enough from ours that our habits don't always work. For example, in the chapter on manners, the author points out that people often thank shop clerks when leaving a store. I tried this on a recent trip and discovered that it could lead to enjoyable short conversations.

Published in 1994, I found it very timely in 2003.

                    Book Description

Drawing on a wide range of documents and interviews with officials in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, as well the author's experience as an aide to Senator Bill Bradley during negotiations, Interpreting NAFTA is a history of the agreement's development, from opening talks to final passage. Frederick W. Mayer combines recent work in international relations, comparative politics, interest groups, and public opinion to develop a broad theoretical framework that crosses between international relations and domestic politics. Mayer demonstrates that to understand NAFTA, one must view it as simultaneously a matter of political interests, institutions, and ideas.

A great presentation of what I expected to be an unexciting topic. Examines the workings of the political system in a highly readable way. I was not only well-informed after I read the book, but entertained as well!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Theoretical Framework.......2001-12-08

This is excellent material if you are conducting any kind of serious research on NAFTA and its negotiations' development and outcome. It provides with a huge theoretical framework, every step of the process. If your line of work is game theory, this book will really help you (or at least it worked wonders for me). This is mandatory reference material for anyone interested in studying NAFTA.

Mayer rivals Grisham. He enfolds the strategy of NAFTA like a good murder-mystery. More proof that reality is more entertaining than fiction. It's a thriller, a nail-biter. I couldn't put it down!

                        Book Description

When it came into force in 1994, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) joined the economic futures of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, with systematic rules governing trade and investment, dispute resolution, and economic relations.

However, economic integration among the three countries extends considerably beyond trade and investment. The NAFTA agreement takes a very narrow view of integration, barely addressing such vital issues as immigration policy and labor markets, the energy sector, environmental protection, and law enforcement.

The governments of Canada, Mexico, and the United States now must confront the question of whether NAFTA is enough. Do they want to keep their trilateral relationship focused on economic matters or are they interested in integrating more deeply—perhaps initiating a process to build a North American Community similar to the European Union?

This volume contains thoughtful discussions about the future of North America by knowledgeable experts from each of the three countries. Robert Pastor has written one of the more comprehensive books on the subject, Toward a North American Community (Institute for International Economics, 2001). Andrés Rozental is an ambassador at large for Mexico and president of Consejo Mexicano de Asuntos Internationacionales, the country's leading foreign policy association in Mexico. Perrin Beatty is a former foreign minister of Canada and currently the president and CEO of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters.

The governments of Canada, the United States, and Mexico face thorny challenges as they decide whether and how to accelerate smooth, and institutionalize the integration process. Pastor, Rozenthal, and Beatty encourage greater dialogue among the three governments and their citizens, as well as more systematic thinking among policymakers and citizens about the promise and challenges of further North American integration.

As an academic specializing in Latin American business, I have frequent contact with senior managers, politicians, and other academics in Mexico and throughout Latin America. As such, the inaccuracies in this book are plainly evident, and there are many. For a contemporary understanding of Mexico, I would instead recommend Bordering on Chaos by Andres Oppenheimer. An excellent introduction to Mexico's Colonial and Revolutionary history can be found in Blood Drenched Altars by Francis C. Kelley. But stay away from this one.

                          Book Description

In States, Banks, and Markets, Nancy Neiman Auerbach approaches financial policymaking as a strategic interaction between two sets of domestic actors: private financiers and state officials. Through a comparative lens, Auerbach explains why the transition to financial liberalization was accompanied by economic crisis and declining growth rates in countries such as Mexico, while the same policy was associated with higher growth rates and a relatively more equitable distribution of income in other countries such as South Korea and Hong Kong. Auerbach not only demonstrates how the timing and duration of the liberalization process is the element differentiating the performance of newly industrializing countries (rather than financial liberalization itself), for she takes the analysis a step further by explaining the economic and political preconditions that put a country in the position to choose a reasonable reform path.

                            Book Description

Elizabeth Emma Ferry explores how members of Guanajuato's Santa Fe Cooperative, Mexico's only remaining cooperatively owned silver mine, give meaning to their labor in an era of rampant globalization and neoliberalism. Ferry analyzes the cooperative's practices and the importance of patrimonio (patrimony) in their understanding of work, kinship, and morality. More specifically, she argues that patrimonio, a belief that certain resources are inalienable possessions of a local collective passed down to subsequent generations, shapes and sustains the cooperative's sense of identity.

In addition to descriptions of the miners' lives and views, Ferry examines patrimonio's influence on other aspects of Mexican life. Patrimonio, which both challenges and coexists with contemporary capitalist practices, draws close connections between collective identities, rights to resources, and social obligations throughout Mexican society. Ferry's ambitious, groundbreaking study opens up new ways of understanding modern Mexican history, the idea of property, value, and exchange in capitalist society, and current debates in Mexico over the ownership of resources, land, and historical artifacts.

                              Product Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on abrasive powder and grain in Mexico face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying abrasive powder and grain to Mexico? How important is Mexico compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of abrasive powder and grain vary from one country of origin to another in Mexico? On the supply side, Mexico also exports abrasive powder and grain. Which countries receive the most exports from Mexico? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for abrasive powder and grain in Mexico. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for abrasive powder and grain for those countries serving Mexico via exports, or supplying from Mexico via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Mexico fits into the world market for imported and exported abrasive powder and grain. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Mexico in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Mexico is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Mexico compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.
