Harvard Business Review on Effective Communication (Harvard Business Review Paperback Series)
ASIN: 0471327727 |
Book Description
Understanding the opportunities and dangers of innovation through intercompany collaboration
The Jericho Principle identifies key trends and patterns in the increasing use of collaboration by corporations and creates a strategic and operational framework for answering key questions about the why and how of using collaboration to rapidly create innovation in uncertain times. Two business and technology strategists from Bearing Point Consulting, formerly KPMG, provide models and diagnostics that break down the various collaborative models in the marketplace, to give managers the tools and understanding they need to quickly and effectively launch the strategic partnerships and alliances that will drive innovation and value creation. Using case studies, client stories, and research, the authors offer the reader a clear view of the promise and peril of collaboration, revealing what works and what doesn't.
Ralph Welborn (Westwood, MA), Senior Vice President, and Vincent Kasten (Fanwood, NJ), Managing Director, are senior business and technology strategists with Bearing Point Consulting, one of the world's leading management consulting and systems integration companies.
Customer Reviews:
WORTH A READ FOR THE EXAMPLES.......2003-06-09
A treatise of sorts from Unisys executives, with a foreword by Steve Ballmer. Sounds promising, though the theme is not exactly avant-garde...Brandenburger/Nalebuff covered this is in "Co-opetition" much more eloquently as long back as 1997.
A discomfortingly large chunk of the book is devoted to drilling the already established business dictum that collaboration, i.e., "a company's alignment of its business activities and processes with other organizations to create shared value and manage shared risk", is not merely a TACTICAL way of enhancing value or efficiency but is rapidly becoming a STRATEGIC necessity for the continual innovation needed to exploit fast-paced yet fleeting business opportunities.
Is it just me, or haven't we known this for what, 10 years now? This part of the book appeared to have been freeze-dried into place and was about as exciting to read as an ice tray.
Fortunately, the book soon picks up as the authors point out how collaboration, while critical for competitive relevance, is potentially risky and a pain in the rear to actually manage. Executives must evaluate the choice of partners, the form of the collaboration, the expected rewards, the possible risks, and the implications for personnel, operations and technology. In addition to explaining the underlying dynamics of collaboration, the book provides frameworks and diagnostics for the strategic and operational decision-making needed to effectively exploit the collaborative imperative.
And in this, it excels. What's more, it brims with some fascinating real-world case studies, arguably the most ambrosial of prose in any business book, and the authors cast a wide net too -- UBS, Cisco, U.S. Department of Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency Network, the Global Straight Through Processing Association (GSTPA) etc.
Overall, a mild to medium recommendation that may just be worth your time if you are involved in collaborative operational work. If you are really serious or care about the strategic perspectives of collaborations, you may also want to take a look at "Co-opetition" or more recently "The Support Economy" -- both trailblazers in their own right.
An excellent book.......2003-05-01
This book is extremely helpful and provides indepth analysis on the subject at hand. (clever title too). it is obviouse that the authers have an outstanding knowledge of the subject matter
Get your arms around business colllaboration -Read This Book.......2003-04-26
BOOK REVIEW:
If there is one thing that is certain, we live in an uncertain and changing world. Those companies that are agile and can quickly and cost effectively change to take advantage of new business opportunities will not only survive they will thrive. Being first to market with a new products or services usually means a higher margin return while the competition is playing catch up.
Business collaboration defined by the authors as " the alignment of business activities and processes with another business to create mutual benefit" is a growing tool used by many companies to quickly and cost effectively implement new business strategies.
Technology has and will continue to evolve to further enable collaboration, as noted by the many excellent examples sited in this book. Effective collaboration requires more than technology, it requires value creation from all collaborators, shared rewards, and managed risk.
This book does an excellent job of describing how organizations build processes and services to enable collaborative partnerships and alliances. After reading this book you will be better equipped to evaluate your company's readiness for collaboration and implement measures to improve your company's readiness in key areas.
The Jericho Principle.......2003-04-18
Thanks to Welborn and Kasten's vast experiences as business and technology strategists the Jericho Principle just became required reading for all MBA Graduates. Their proven (and time tested) frameworks and pragmatics steps help determine when, where, and why a collaborative venture makes sense to your organization - information each and every recent MBA grad should live by.

Customer Reviews:
save your money!.......2004-11-30
I found this book to be overly simplistic and superficial. If you've never read a self-help book before this book may be a helpful. Otherwise, it's just basic self-help regurgitation, with simple morality tales that seems highly unrealistic and the strategies to help solve problems are slightly condescending (take a dance class, a brisk walk, etc) and quite honestly, nothing you haven't heard before.
Quick, easy exercises that will make a difference!.......1999-05-15
This book really helped me target what I needed to work on. I was able to identify my key issues and how to address them. It is very clearly written and well organized. I especially loved the lists of the quick things I could do right away. They're so fun, and simple! I put them into action right away. And I've started to pursue some goals I put off for a long time. This book has given me the courage to go for it!
Gives new meaning to the concept of "self help"!.......1999-04-22
I don't usually gravitate to books like this but the subtitle really touched a nerve and am I thrilled I got it. After I read the material and followed the examples it put so many things into perspective...and with such clarity! I'm also not the type to usually write a review of a book but I so appreciated what this did for me I felt moved to construct this.Give it a try...you will be very happy you did.
This is an outstanding book!.......1999-04-12
It contains interesting and provocative exercises. I have a shelf full of these types of books, but with this one, I really feel I'm getting results. When I read the stories, I kept saying, "That's me!" A really helpful book, like having your own personal coach.

Book Description
For the medieval Cistercian abbot Aelred of Rievaulx, human beings are capable of happiness because human nature is good-but the self-defeating choices of humans have led to their misery. A loving God leads humans to happiness by nudging their free wills toward choosing the good and then, if they respond positively, giving them the power to realize that good. The power, or virtue, which perfects the human intellect is humility, which is not meekness but self-knowledge, gained through introspection and meditation on and through nature and Scripture. The will is perfected through love, without which no human act is good. Love for oneself, for others, and for God are complementary, not competing acts of the will. A special way of loving is friendship, on which Aelred's teaching is perhaps the most complete and most sophisticated in the history of Christian thought. Perfection is, for Aelred, attainable in this life, since he sees perfection as a process, not a static condition. That condition will be attained in the total fulfillment of the afterlife.

Book Description
Whether watching baseball or undergoing heart surgery, Americans have bought a variety of goods and services to achieve happiness. Here is a provocative look at what they have chosen to purchase. Stanley Lebergott maintains that the average consumer has behaved more reasonably than many distinguished critics of "materialism" have suggested. He sees consumers seeking to make an uncertain and often cruel world into a pleasanter and more convenient place--and, for the most part, succeeding. With refreshing common sense, he reminds us of what many "luxuries" have meant, especially for women: increased income since 1900 has been used largely to lighten the backbreaking labor once required by household chores. Great book from a very unique perspective.......2003-06-17
Actually had Stan the Man as a professor at Wesleyan - frankly a bit on the dry side - but always full of fascinating facts and information. And he was always willing to chide the "life was better 100 years ago" nonsense.
As a writer and economist he is GREAT and this book is so clear and full of smart common sense thinking it is scary to think that for a lot of people it is full of revelations that challenge the group think. If you like economics and history you can't miss this.
Fascinating Information; Superbly Written.......2000-09-18
Stanley Lebergott has earned a reputation as one of America's foremost economic historian. He is a first-rate economist; he writes beautifully and cleverly; he is learned; and his subjects are germane.
PURSUING HAPPINESS is a terrific book. Lebergott reviews the history of consumption opportunities under capitalism. Like Julian Simon, and Mike Cox & Rick Alm, he finds that the material well-being of ordinary Americans has skyrocketed during the 20th century. To compare American living standards at the close of the 20th century to those at the beginning of the 20th century is to discover an explosion of wealth so vast that we who today enjoy this astonishing wealth can scarcely imagine what life was like for our ancestors of just 100 years ago.
Today, we have many more things -- and much more time (both because we live longer and because we have more leisure), improved health, greater learning, and a richer menu of entertainments. Lebergott shows also that capitalism has been especially good for the working classes and for women. For example, he documents the extraordinarily burdensome and time-consuming tasks that nearly all women 100 years ago did routinely to keep their households running. Today, almost all such tasks are farmed out or mechanized. (In one of his many brilliant lines, Lebergott notes that "By the 1980s, only a handful of hippies expected their womenfolk to haul water from the brook or well.")
No one who comments upon the course of the American economy should be without this book.

Extremely helpful while working through psychotherapy.......1998-12-29
This book served as a very effective outline of what my psychotherapist was helping me to understand. It also provided insights in many areas of emotional health. Ultimately the book helped me to make the very most of my psychotherpy and believe that what I was learning about my self and my needs were needs placed in every human by God. This ultimately lead me to a very strong sense of spirituality.

Description:
Given slower growth and fierce competition in the domestic market, combined with increasing opportunities in many overseas markets, more and more U.S. companies are going international. While many doing so may initially use a direct exporting approach that relies on foreign channel members to distribute the product in the host country, over time, strategic alliances among distribution partners may form based on trust, commitment, and cooperation. For these alliances to succeed, the partners' perceptions of these variables need to be congruent so that expectations on each side of the dyad are reasonably similar. However, what happens when the cultural backgrounds of each channel partner are substantially different? This study empirically examines whether cultural differences do affect trust, commitment, and cooperation in international marketing channel alliances between U.S. exporters and their foreign distribution partners. Based on the survey responses from 149 U.S. exporters with marketing alliances abroad, cultural differences do affect trust, commitment, and cooperation. The greater the cultural differences between channel partners, the lower the levels of trust, commitment, and cooperation. Managerial implications are discussed, and study limitations are identified.

Ch8. Management Implications of Marketing 2.0 (An interview with Prof. Roland Berger)
Time flies, so as advancement of IT. Naturally this 2001 German book published in English in 2003 seems a little bit obsolete today. However, I must praise the authors for their accurate and realistic forecast of their future world instead of painting a sci-fi movie picture. Moreover, the abundannce (33) of figures/graphs do add points to it. Nevertheless, I must complain that the book title "marketing 2.0" is gimmicky and something addressing eCRM/loyalty is definitely a much more suitable. In short, simply a so so CRM/marketing book. It wont be a loss if you give it a pass.

Book Description
This book provides a much needed analysis of the ways in which entrepreneurial firms manage their relationships with key suppliers during periods of growth.
