Sypnosis.......1999-04-29
This book addresses the importance of focusing an organization around systems or processes, and how such a change can affect how health care managers deal with ever-present financial pressures. It also contains a step-by-step method to be used by managers to start developing a core business system structure for their organization. In order to achieve a core business system organization structure, the authors believe that health care managers need to refrain from making changes based solely upon bottom line or end results. Discussed are reasons why it is dangerous to apply quick fixes to the problems involved in reducing costs, as well as the importance of making changes based on a thorough understanding of the system.

Customer Reviews:
Superb account of the iniquities of empire.......2001-07-31
This fascinating and scholarly study provides the hard evidence that the British Empire was a disaster for those whom it ruled. For instance, Benjamin Kidd, in 'The Control of the Tropics', wrote that the inhabitants of the tropics had no right to their resources; he held that they must be developed for the general good of the world. In fact they were developed, when they were, only for the general good of the british ruling class, as grasping a bunch of villains as the world has ever seen.
Havinden and Meredith conclude, "Throughout this book we have shown that colonialism and development were largely contradictory and that this produced a gap between the dreams (or myths) of developing the 'great estate' and the economic realities. The structural imbalances in the economies of the British colonies which were apparent by the end of the colonial era were the direct result of the pursuit of the Chamberlain aim of buttressing the British economy with a 'great estate' in the tropics. In the end the Chamberlain dream was abandoned along with formal colonial rule but its persistence over the previous seventy years bequeathed the now ex-colonies a legacy which would continue to inhibit their economic development in the years to come." They wrote, "The Colonial Office's development philosophy still depended upon the belief that once the state had provided a framework ordered government and a basic infrastructure, private entrepreneurs and private capital could be relied upon to initiate and carry out a steady programme of economic advance. ... the development problem was not as simple as this." Pre-1914, "the incomes of most of the inhabitants of the tropical colonies remained pitifully small and their standard of living abysmally low." As now, disgusting levels of wealth fed off vilely low poverty.
Sir Henry Moore, Assistant Secretary at the Colonial Office, wrote in 1939 that, "any proposals for the creation of secondary industry in the Colonial Empire are received with a marked lack of enthusiasm, if not with suspicion. The reason for this, I suggest, appears to me to be found in the more or less unwritten rule that any proposals, whether in the field of industry or tariffs, which give rise to any conflict of economic interest, should be approached from the standpoint that United Kingdom trade interests must rank first, Dominion trade interests second, and those of the Colonial Empire last." For 'trade interests', read fat cats. Plus ca change - yet.

Book Description
Training is wasted unless employees really learn. This book makes sure that learning happens--every time.
Just as you can lead a horse to water, but it won't necessarily drink, so you can give an employee training, but he may not actually learn...unless, of course, the trainer uses this insightful new book. TURNING TRAINING INTO LEARNING provides a specific, tested method for making sure training equals real learning.
Written for anyone who must train others, this step-by-step guide shows exactly how to create a program that engages trainees and ensures that they remember and use what they've learned when they get back to work.
Readers learn how to: * Analyze exactly what a particular trainee needs * Establish a safe environment where questions are welcomed * Demonstrate to learners why the training is relevant to them * Understand the process by which adults learn * Place real learning within the context of the traditional training cycle: assessment, design, delivery, and evaluation.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful.......2003-06-19
As someone completely new to training this book was very helpful. It has several useful forms and other things that can be copied and easily used. It may be a bit basic for someone who has been in training for a long time tho.
A Very Helpful Handbook.......2001-04-25
This book would be good for someone, who needs guidance in the process of developing an effective training session. The authors' Shelila W. Furjanic and Laurie A. Trotman separated this training handbook into two parts. Part one focuses on the training process and part two on the LEARN process. In each part, it has many examples and samples to use as a guide, when developing a training session. It also provides valuable information that is a good reference, for a new trainer. Overall, this book is an excellent guide to anyone who is interested in developing a training program. It covers everything that a person needs to know, about the training process in one book. I have learned so much from reading this, that I am sure that it is going to be a very good reference for me in my future, career endeavors. This is more than a book; it is a handbook, in which I would recommend to anybody who is new to the training process.
A new approach.......2000-07-13
I am very impressed with this easy to read and effective book on developing a training program within the organization. From figuring out whether or not training will solve a problem to creative strategies to get the audience thinking and involved, this book helped me make a mole hill out of a mountain!
Complete with easy to use forms and handouts, I didn't need to purchase any other book but this one! Pretty good when you think of all the money that is spent on developing such programs.....!
A Must Read for Anyone Conducting Organization Training.......2000-04-17
This book will have a substantial impact in any organization that really wants to ensure trainees remember and apply what they have learned during a training session when they get back to their job. It provides an innovative and practical approach to organizational training. All the tools you need to identify, design and administer the training are included in this book. It is packed full with guidelines, models, checklists, forms, templates and other easy-to-use tools. I highly recommend this book for anyone involved in conducting organization training.

Training for the New Generations.......2006-08-20
Excellent. This book was extremely helpful in outlining new approaches to training designs for the current and emerging generations in the workplace. As a consultant who not only trains but works with trainers, it provided insight about my audience as well as concepts to assist other trainers
HOW TO DESIGN AND DELIVER TRAINING FOR THE NEW AND EMERGING GENERATIONS .......2005-12-26
Once again, I wished I had read Dr. El-Shamy's book sooner. We already knew that there were huge shifts in training and development on both sides of that podium we never use anymore anyway. Susan gives practical tips, games and a CD that helps you bridge generation learning styles as well as anticipate what to do with a training world that continues to shift to a requested more individual AND electronic delivery. How am I gonna do that? All ways perhaps, including streaming video, blogs and why not the ipod? This book is particularly designed for experienced trainers facing increasingly younger clients. I originally thought it was a little pricey but with the CD I think it is a bargain. Great resource.
A great resource!.......2004-05-19
I needed this! I tend to think of training the way I was taught, lectures, an occasional exercise, some testing. This book really pointed out the differences in learning styles between generations. Gives information on how to alter your training style to be certain you are providing information in a way that makes it easy (and fun!) for everyone to learn. Full of tools and tricks to help keep the audience engaged, and how to know if you are suceeding. Lots of example games and interactive activities that can easily be customized to any topic.
Full of practical knowledge and advice, this is a resource I'll use often.
Good Resource!.......2004-05-18
I found HOW TO DESIGN AND DELIVER TRAINING FOR THE NEW AND EMERGING GENERATIONS to be a really valuable resource for addressing training needs of audiences of different ages. It's written so that both new and experienced training professionals can gain helpful information. The manual is full of useful tips, techniques, activities, games and insights to engage the younger generation of trainees as well as other generations in learning experiences. This is a resource that I'm sure I'll refer to often in designing and delivering training!

Book Description
Most computer instructors are hired for their technical expertise, and may not have a strong background in teaching. This unique book gives all computer instructors a wealth of practical ideas on how to actively involve their learners and make training informative, interesting, and interactive. This book is the one priceless tool that will help you become an instructor renowned for your quality training.
Customer Reviews:
A reader & facilitator.......2005-08-18
77 Sensational Tips is an excellent collection of training tips that can be used in a wide range of training settings. Although the book is aimed at computer instructors, many of the tips can be used effectively in other safety and technical training settings. I have used a number of the tips in both small and large group settings and overall had great responses from the participants.
Good instructors / facilitators are always looking for ways to keep their participants engaged in the learning. This handy book gives some good ideas on things that might be considered "outside the lines" in many traditional settings and for many instructors. Not all of the tips work in all settings however, with a little imagination and thought, a good instructor can use many of them in a range of learning settings.
77 Tips presents ideas & tips that reinforce fundamental adult learning concepts and helps us to remember that learners are human and not just an ID number. Ms Bruners has obviously spent a lot of time dealing with adult learners and this book is a reflection on her desire to enhance the learning experience. If you want to improve the material you present, try some of the tips. It worked for me.
Tips that Teach.......2001-06-26
As a computer instructor, I am always looking for practical ways to change the approach I take to my training. I was impressed with the variety of activities that are included in this book. Having tried a number of these in my computer lab, I now have answers to the question I've been asking, "How do I maintain the necessary human connections among students when teaching the technical stuff"? Thank you to the author!
This person calls herself an author?.......2001-03-10
When I came across this book in a friends bathroom and took a look through it, I saw why it was in the "john". This was one of the most poorly written adult instruction books I have ever seen. The so-called author uses contractions and imcomplete sentence structure throughout the book. It is not clear and concise. I wonder what publisher would agree to take on this mess. As another review states, it seems more like something a 10 year old would use. Perhaps this want to be author should spend her time doing something other than writing.
Not at all useful.......2000-03-24
If you played all the little learning games suggested by this book, you'd have no time left for "real" classtime. I found only 3 of the tips even remotely useful. This book seemed to be geared toward teaching 10-year-olds.
little info.......2000-01-29
This seems like an outline for other, more complete books on the subject. Some of the excercises are intended for adults yet seem appropriate for ten year olds. All of the info here could be found in other books and then some.

I don't usually like to throw something negative into the works,
but this book just wasn't worth the read. I've read many, many
books on advertising. And I just didn't find anything really
of value in here. So my suggestion? Send your money on another book.
