Book Description
Winner of the 1998 Paul A. Samuelson Award given by TIAA-CREF, The Evolution of Retirement is the first comprehensive economic history of retirement in America. With life expectancies steadily increasing, the retirement rate of men over age 64 has risen drastically. Dora L. Costa looks at factors underlying this increase and shows the dramatic implications of her findings for both the general public and the U.S. government. Using statistical, and demographic concepts, Costa sheds light on such important topics as rising incomes and retirement, work and disease, the job prospects of older workers, living arrangements of the elderly, the development of a retirement lifestyle, and pensions and politics.
"[Costa's] major contribution is to show that, even without Social Security and Medicare, retirement would have expanded dramatically."—Robert J. Samuelson, New Republic
"An important book on a topic which has become popular with historians and is of major significance to politicians and economists."—Margaret Walsh, Business History

Customer Reviews:
Pricey Book! Save Your Money and Time!!.......2006-02-26
This book was a complete waste of money and time. I've been in the direct marketing/mail business for 13 years and I'm always looking for new angles to better my business. This guy doesn't seem to know what he is talking about and it makes me wonder if he really has any experience in the mail order business at all.
Here's the deal: If you are serious about making money in mail order or direct response, don't get any of these waste-of-time books that "claim" to show you the business. The ONLY book that I've ever read that can (almost) exactly mirror exactly what I do for my $7-million per year business is a book by Vincent James called The 12-Month Millionaire which you can get on eBay (or type in on a search engine) since it's not a regular published book. The only thing I wouldn't follow in that book is the low priced items he recommends selling like wrinkle creams and weight loss pills (stick with information courses of $199+ with mail order as a RULE, ALWAYS). Lower end products of $99 or less will cause you to lose money in mail order EVERY TIME!!
Outdated.......2003-02-02
This book is outdated for the 21st century. The basics are there and in great detail but most of the information is useless for today.
Good, if old fashioned, basics.......2001-12-28
Whilst the core business ideas of this book are very sound and there is a lot of very useful and specific information I can't help feeling that it's a bit dated. It needs a big revamp to include the whole Internet world. I also felt that the copywriting examples, whilst they probably still work, are representative of the 50s and 60s rather than the 21st century.
GREAT book for entrepreneurs and beginners alike.......2000-03-21
This book gives you an exact idea of what you can do to expand your business, if you an entrepreneur or give enough information to a fresh person to start his/her own business. This is a must buy book for people thinking of becoming self employed or those who have been in business for a long time and need to know the trends of the business world.
Commonsense advice, but author's heros sell dubious products.......1998-07-25
If you believe Cohen, all the people who ever hit it big in "mail-order" did it selling some sort of "how-to" books (Hmmmmmm . . . . .). There is some useful information here, but it is not a guide to becoming the next L.L. Bean or Amazon.com. If you have studied marketing and business in general, you don't need this.

Customer Reviews:
By far the best book I have seen.......2001-08-02
Experienced Direct Marketer, Kern is exactly the model you want to shape yourself to if you are in sales and direct marketing. I spend 8 hours a day generating sales leads for other businesses so I know what I am talking about. He is dead on with his methods. I also thought the Internet section was perfect for anoyone that does not currently use the internet as a research tool.
The Most Comprehensive Direct Marketing Tool To-Date.......2001-04-13
Russell Kern's Sure-Fire Direct Response Marketing is an excellent resource for improving your methods of finding and developing prospects. His coverage of topics such as handling focus groups, creating effective campaigns, and bridging the gap between marketing and sales make this a valuable tool for improving business-to-business marketing. The Internet chapter explores how to use this medium to your best advantage. Whatever your level of expertise, you'll find this book useful.
Outstanding read for sales and marketing people.......2001-04-06
Russell Kern has done a great job with SURE Fire Direct Response Marketing. The book is well-conceived and comprehensive. Although it is specifically about generating sales leads, anyone who reads this book will find their knowledge of marketing and sales greatly enhanced.
A must read for marketers!.......2001-04-01
Mr. Kern has provided the marketing industry with a new and comprehensive methodology to direct marketing. This book covers the essential fundamendals of lead generation as well as advanced marketing stratgies which include eCultivation techniques. S.U.R.E-Fire direct marketing provides a step by step process to designing an effective campaign. Plus, the execution excellence chapters (9-11) are packed with techniques and checklists to help ensure marketing success. I strongly recommend this book to marketing professional and those who are responsible for generating sales leads for their company.

Book Description
Randy Gilbert was privileged to interview Craig Perrine on The Inside Success Show.
The topic for this interview is "Big Profits From Small Lists" another super-hot subject that is the buzz of the Internet. People, from nine to ninety, and from all walks of life, are learning how to profit on the internet, and it's more than just selling on eBay.
This special guest is a proud work-at-home father and he earns more from his Internet Email Lists than most corporate execs earn trekking to their cushy offices everyday. He says that having your own list of happy subscribers will permanently transport you to the top of the economic food chain no matter what happens to the economy in the future.
Craig is notorious for his zany, but powerful emails and we're in for a real treat today because he's only shared his List Profit Secrets at a few select exclusive seminars, costing as much as $5,000 to attend.
If you're ready to be transported to a higher income and enjoy the freedom to do more of what you love, then I highly recommend you give your attention to this fun and talented list profit expert.
In this interview, Craig reveals...
** Why building a list is your most important priority
** What the three keys to list profits are, and
** The Quick and Easy steps to getting started today.

From the supplier: UNICEF embarked on a widescale fund-raising campaign in Japan during the late 1992 and early 1993. It sent out 120,000 packages, consisting of leaflets and letters explaining UNICEF's mission to prospective Japanese donors. Although direct mail fund-raising remains unpopular in Japan, UNICEF received contributions from 9.9% of the recipients. All packages were sent from New York, NY through the US Postal Service's international bulk-rate airmail service.
