Book Description
In traditional narrative theory, the term "omniscience" refers to a narrator's absolute knowledge and authority. Narrative theory provides no social, historical, or psychological context for omniscience, nor does it attempt to explain the predominance of omniscient narration in nineteenth-century British fiction. Audrey Jaffe uses Dickens's novels and sketches to redefine narrative omniscience as a problematic that has implications for the construction of Victorian subjectivity, giving us new insights into Dickens and into other fiction as well.
Jaffe demonstrates that omniscience is the effect of a series of oppositions--between narrator and character, knowledge and its absence, sympathy and irony, privacy and publicity. Showing how these oppositions participate in and enforce Victorian ideas about family, the subject, and private life, this study illuminates connections between ideology and narrative form.

Book Description
Patrick Brantlinger here examines the commonly held nineteenth-century view that all "primitive" or "savage" races around the world were doomed sooner or later to extinction. Warlike propensities and presumed cannibalism were regarded as simultaneously noble and suicidal, accelerants of the downfall of other races after contact with white civilization. Brantlinger finds at the heart of this belief the stereotype of the self-exterminating savage, or the view that "savagery" is a sufficient explanation for the ultimate disappearance of "savages" from the grand theater of world history.
Humanitarians, according to Brantlinger, saw the problem in the same terms of inevitability (or doom) as did scientists such as Charles Darwin and Thomas Henry Huxley as well as propagandists for empire such as Charles Wentworth Dilke and James Anthony Froude. Brantlinger analyzes the Irish Famine in the context of ideas and theories about primitive races in North America, Australia, New Zealand, and elsewhere. He shows that by the end of the nineteenth century, especially through the influence of the eugenics movement, extinction discourse was ironically applied to "the great white race" in various apocalyptic formulations. With the rise of fascism and Nazism, and with the gradual renewal of aboriginal populations in some parts of the world, by the 1930s the stereotypic idea of "fatal impact" began to unravel, as did also various more general forms of race-based thinking and of social Darwinism.

Book Description
Exploring the careers of five influential women writers of the Restoration and eighteenth century, Catherine Gallagher reveals the connections between the increasing prestige of female authorship, the economy of credit and debt, and the rise of the novel. The "nobodies" of her title are not ignored, silenced, or anonymous women. Instead, they are literal nobodies: the abstractions of authorial personae, printed books, intellectual property rights, literary reputations, debts and obligations, and fictional characters. These are the exchangeable tokens of modern authorship that lent new cultural power to the increasing number of women writers through the eighteenth century. Women writers, Gallagher discovers, invented and popularized numerous ingenious similarities between their gender and their occupation. The terms "woman," "author," "marketplace," and "fiction" come to define each other reciprocally.
Gallagher analyzes the provocative plays of Aphra Behn, the scandalous court chronicles of Delarivier Manley, the properly fictional nobodies of Charlotte Lennox and Frances Burney, and finally Maria Edgeworth's attempts in the late eighteenth century to reform the unruly genre of the novel.

Book Description
In the years between the Great Famine of the 1840s and the First World War, Ireland experienced a drastic drop in population: the percentage of adults who never married soared from 10 percent to 25 percent, while the overall population decreased by one third. What accounted for this? For many social analysts, the history of post-Famine Irish depopulation was a Malthusian morality tale where declining living standards led young people to postpone marriage out of concern for their ability to support a family. The problem here, argues Timothy Guinnane, is that living standards in post-Famine Ireland did not decline. Rather, other, more subtle economic changes influenced the decision to delay marriage or not marry at all. In this engaging inquiry into the "vanishing Irish," Guinnane explores the options that presented themselves to Ireland's younger generations, taking into account household structure, inheritance, religion, cultural influences on marriage and family life, and especially emigration.
Guinnane focuses on rural Ireland, where the population changes were most profound, and explores the way the demographic patterns reflect the rural Irish economy, Ireland's place as a small part in a much larger English-speaking world, and the influence of earlier Irish history and culture. Particular effort is made to compare Irish demographic behavior to similar patterns elsewhere in Europe, revealing an Ireland anchored in European tradition and yet a distinctive society in its own right.
Customer Reviews:
Do not buy this book!.......2004-06-16
Based on the two reviews I bought this book and was highly disappointed. The author confuses the reader by providing way too much irrelevant information. Moreover, the style is quite poor. There are much better books about Ireland, e.g. by Connolly.
This the best book on Irish population history around........1999-06-03
What is so new about Guinnane's book is how he places Irish population history in a broader context. The book is by a high-flying academic who knows how to write appraochable readable prose. Great book! Wow!

Customer Reviews:
A 'must' for managers.......2007-02-03
A 'must' for managers is Gini Graham Scott, Ph.D.'s A SURVIVAL GUIDE TO MANAGING EMPLOYEES FROM HELL, telling how to handle a typical problem employee. Humor blends with practical, life-tested advice for handling different types of employee issues, from the clueless incompetent to the party-time performer who can't seem to separate work from fun. Case histories blend with advice and techniques from the field in a manual key to any level manager's success.
A common-sense approach to the difficult employee.......2007-01-29
We have all known the "employee from hell" in all of his or her guises: the complainer, the egomaniac, the troublemaker, the passive-aggressive type, the clever con artist, and many more.
In this plain-spoken book, management consultant Gini Graham Scott categorizes bad employees into some three dozen pigeonholes (like the "impossible intern," the "negative Nelly," and the out-and-out liar) and assigns each a brief chapter that opens with a succinct case study. In each setting, Scott asks the same question: Did the boss handle the situation well? Should she have fired the employee on the spot, put him on probation, called a staff meeting, had a one-on-one conversation with the troublesome employee, let the whole thing go, or done something else entirely?
Scott's advice springs largely from common sense. She acknowledges that there isn't just one way to handle a difficult worker. A good deal depends on the office atmosphere, the employee's and boss's personalities, and other intangibles. In discussing a saleswoman who gives so much attention to the first customer of the day that she neglects her duties to other customers, Scott suggests a variety of steps: giving the worker one more chance, explaining that she will be fired if she doesn't change, clarifying where she has gone wrong, asking another employee to monitor her behavior, and rewarding her with small bonuses if her performance improves.
Of course, some problematic behavior - drug use on the job, stealing from the employer, a pattern of lying -- can't be tolerated, and Scott urges that supervisors should fire people who do those things, even if the employee is a friend, or the friend of a friend. Still, there are a number of ways to dismiss someone, and Scott insists that even a fireable employee should be shown the door graciously.

Customer Reviews:
A Good Reference Guide to Keep.......2007-06-09
As everyone who has worked in an office environment knows, not every co-worker is happy, productive and helpful. Human beings come in all shapes and sizes. For whatever reason, some people simply do not work and play well with others. While a co-worker has little recourse, the manager has a responsibility to address this issue and find a solution that ensures the whole team is not damaged by this one individual.
Managing Difficult People by Marilyn Pincus does not expect you to become a psychotherapist. In fact, she says flat out that in most cases it doesn't matter WHY the person is the way they are. Maybe it was childhood trauma, maybe it is a rough home situation. You can never "fix" a person. What you have to do, as a manager, is learn how to set up an environment that minimizes this person's negative impact on the group - and gives the individual the best possible chance to succeed.
The book breaks problems out into main categories - the bully, the procrastinator, and so on. Most people have different traits co-mingled, but if you work on issues one by one, that gives you the best chance of success. For each issue, the book goes step by step through techniques that work with that type of person, including examples.
I'm very happy that this book is also realistic about what you can hope to achieve. Where other books make you think that ANY problem can be solved, this book lays out when it's time to take further action, including documenting the issue, working to fire the person and even to bring in legal help. Not every situation can be resolved.
You can certainly just read through the book from start to finish, but where most books you read once and then donate to your local library, this one is a keeper. If an employee suddenly starts being late all the time, you can go back and re-read the chapter on procrastinators and learn some techniques to help them out.
Highly recommended!
Insightful and Informative!.......2007-02-23
This is an informative book to assist managers, particularly the junior and middle managers, to deal with difficult employees. The book describes the various kinds of negative or difficult people that one can encounter in an organization including the bully, the complainer or whiner, the procrastinator, the know-it-all, the silent type, the social butterfly, the "no people skills" person, the rookie, the overly sensitive person and the manipulator. Such difficult people disrupt the working environment, and hence the need for managers to take timely steps to adequately handle such negative people.
Marilyn Pincus does a good job of explaining the motivations of difficult people. She then presents tips, strategies and techniques for coping with them, whether or not you manage to figure out their motivations. This little book is a handy companion as the author provides practical and workable tips, strategies and recommendations to help you get the desired outcomes. Nevertheless, you need to bear in mind that some of the suggested strategies may be culture specific and you may need to adjust your style accordingly. It is also important to note that the manager's attitude influences the outcome when dealing with difficult people. However, all-in-all, I found the advice and suggestions that Marilyn provides to be useable and valuable.
This is a unique book because it provides a comprehensive analysis of a wide range of negative and difficult behaviour in an organization which you are not likely to get in any other book on the subject. The book is recommended reading for managers who need to achieve optimal results for their organizations by avoiding or effectively dealing with disruptions arising from difficult people.
Nothing New.......2007-01-16
There was nothing new in this book that wasn't in any other managment book I have read.
Highly Recommended!.......2005-04-29
You can learn how to handle problem employees three ways: figure it out for yourself, get a great mentor or read this book. Designed primarily for managers rather than human resources professionals, it's a handy guide to different problem personalities. Author Marilyn Pincus provides several alternative solutions for how to counter each type's negative influence on your organization. Her clear writing and thoughtful organization make the book even more useful. While author Pincus doesn't provide detailed advice on the legal and procedures aspects of employment, she does tell you when the ice is getting thin enough to seek the advice of professionals. We strongly prescribe her book to help bring managerial blood pressure readings back into the normal range.

Disappointed.......2007-02-07
I just felt that there was nothing in the workbook that was useful. Most of the material was something I would be embarassed to try on a group, and I have to say, this will end up in the next garage sale!
Average - some good exercises.......2007-01-13
I am a professional trainer, I pulled a few good exercise out of this but most are somewhat childlike and very average. Probably something better out there, but I did get a few ideas for my classes.
A Super Resource.......2003-09-08
I hate to disagree with my esteemed colleague from Mexico City but for any of us who deal with the REAL world of selling, this book is a gem. It is a quick and easy to use way to spice up sales meetings.
Great Resource for Use in Training.......2001-10-09
I do training for an association in which we are members. Although the exercises in this book are for sales people, I have adapted more than a dozen of them to use in various training sessions, from surviving or thriving in our changed economy to direct marketing by snail mail and email. Would recommend this book to anyone who needs visuals to motivate others.
Completely useless.......2001-05-19
As a sales and marketing professional and university professor I can tell you this book is book is one of the worst books I have ever purchased. The reason for this is because the exercises seem adequate for people with a negative IQ! I would have returned the book but my 4 year old boy damaged it.

Renowned attorney Thomas Hanna has more than 40 years of experience representing high-profile businesses and winning hundreds of cases. Now he reveals practical advice for reducing the possibility of a lawsuit and for winning a case if it does go to court. Readers will discover how to:
* Investigate problems and learn why they happen.
* Handle problem employees effectively.
* Keep thorough documentation during a disciplinary action.
* Know when and how to work with an attorney.
* Avoid illegal use of e-mail, video monitoring, and other devices to "snoop" on employees.
* Be an effective witness if a case comes to trial.

Book Description
Although some employees can be helped through coaching that corrects performance pitfalls, others are able to do the job, but for some reason or another, are not motivated to do it. This chapter deals with the unmotivated employee. It concentrates on motivating problem employees, dealing with "C" employees, and handling dismissals when necessary.

Customer Reviews:
This 1992 Book Is Hopelessly Out-of-Date.......2000-04-16
The Internet is not even mentioned in this book. And that's where the biggest action now is, as far as personals advertising is concerned. The old print sources that are listed are for the most part not current. The advice is so elementary (don't write about sex in your first letter, don't be late for your first date, be sure to meet in a public place the first time and the like) as to be virtually useless. And finally -- let's face it -- the fact that the author has gone through hundreds of women during a period of several years and still not met his match does not speak very highly of his frequently touted "system." The title is catchy, though ... and the cover is nicely designed!
Good for finding Pen Pals too.......1998-08-23
I bought this book several years ago -- and found it fascinating. At that point, I had already met the man of my dreams thru the personals, and wanted to find pen pals and friends. I found this book very helpful, but, alas, the pen pals I made have since faded. The only negative thing I could say about this book is that even a year after its publish date, some of the organization addresses were out of date! The most positive thing I can say about this book is the author's positive, go-for-it attitude. A superb resource for those of us who enjoy writing letters!!
Superior work by author who married a foreign woman.......1997-12-11
All the questions you have about about finding the woman of your dreams are answered here. This book even has a chapter on deciding if this is a good strategy for you. After that, the book tells you tactics which he used in finding his wife. Also contains a chapter on visas, immigration, etc.
