    Book Description

Most ecommerce experts agree that click-and-buy shopping cart sites are fast becoming a thing of the past. Soon, the only ebusinesses that will matter will be those which allow customers to custom design the products they buy. At Ford, the Ford-Oracle AutoXchange site transformed Ford's supply chain from one based on forecasts and building for inventory to a real-time, build-to-order model. In this practical guide to the future of ebusiness, BuildNet, Inc. Chairman Keith T. Brown clearly explains why the most successful business-to-consumer (B2C) ebusinesses, now and in the years ahead, are those built on interactive business-to-business (B2B) platforms that integrate Internet technology into all phases of business operations. And he arms readers with the knowledge and skills needed to create solid interactive business plans. Keith T. Brown (Durham, NC) is Chairman of BuildNet, Inc., the home-building industry's largest ebusiness, technology, and project management software company. A privately held company, BuildNet, Inc. manages the construction of approximately a third of all residential home construction in the U.S.

5 out of 5 stars What will happens in the future on B2B? Read this........2001-07-06

I have read the book. It give me impression that it is like a future story book, but in the near future. In my opinion, timeframe will be within 5 years in US, but 10 years in foreign countries. What will happens like the book describes will be based on the infrastructure of high-bandwith internet and online purchasing peoples up to the critical numbers. I am not an expert on these, but I believe it will come very soon. Anyway, it is worth to read. English is not my mother tongue, but I read it just like I read a novel, no reading problems. worth it.

Need a good guidebook to B2B? Here it is. This is how to make your .com a investment succcess story. Sometimes hard to follow without a lot of college but OK if you are a computer whiz. Four stars up!

4 out of 5 stars E-market of the future is closer than we think........2000-11-09

Good resource for E-com Business Development and strategy.

This immediately took my mind back when some arrogant nerd said that there was going to be a personal computer in every home. At that time you would have to purchase another home to have adequate space for the monster. Also, it was helpful but slow compared to the paper system we had. Nevertheless, look where we are now.

The info in this book is right on target and in my opinion could come to pass in the next 5 years. Regardless, demand by the industries as a whole for just in time possessing will be upon us shortly. This book describes how and why the benefits are worth pursuing. ...

4 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of the potential of e-business.......2000-10-13

This little book is filled with all of the good reasons why e-commerce is here to stay. By means of simple parable/storytelling, Brown demystifies the complexities of doing business on the internet. "You don't need a weatherman to show which way the wind blow" might be his motto.

When a friend gave me the book, I thought it was a "how-to" book; it's not. But the theory presented here is compelling enough to have made this a worthy read.

    5 out of 5 stars Powerful & punchy.......2000-10-10

Despite the fact that previous reviews for this book were obviously written by employees of the company, I think it has a lot to offer every internet start-up.

The Interactive Marketplace uncovers the stumbling blocks that plague similar dot.coms and vaporware providers. The book shows how erratic planning is not necessarily the next step toward success in the "e-commerce", "vector-this", "leverage-love" economies. A few may be surprised that interactive technology is here to stay and will -like the telephone- enable products to dynamically respond to the cyber-paced feild of "just in time" delivery, Brown has a clean, fresh and airy grasp that business communities are now, more than ever, vulnerable than before the Internet emerged. For businesses to succeed, they can't just publish a business plan with vague and quickly outdated flow charts of a technological society that is passing them by; instead they should plan to implement upgraded technology and hire professionals who exhibit skill rather than just a resume of golden parachutes; this highly targeted, personalized, value-added approach will guide otherwise graying companies out of the internet colorbook phase and into reading whole business sentences with ease. Composed in mostly in buzz-words and executive refridgerator magnets, this book will hold anyone who has as much experience in the techno-trenches and also be an invaluable bible for company leaders trying to find their place in the changing Internet economy. Please, buy this book for yourself as well as one for a co-worker.

The 1980s gave rise to the young upwardly mobile. In the 1990's, yuppies downsized and rightsized their careers and companies into downward mobility. In 21st Century, the only thing that counts is successful mobility. In this timely book, the secrets to successful mobility will be illustrated using examples of those who write their own pink slips, create their own job titles and find success by simply doing the things they love to do to help others get the things they need.

    5 out of 5 stars OH, WHAT A FEELING. . ........2003-09-25

Joe Estey, through his special gift with words and real-life experiences - his and others - somehow connects with that little voice inside each of us. That connection creates a shift in how you see yourself, how you think about your circumstances, and how you feel about your purpose in life.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Amusing.......2003-09-25

A very enjoyable book that will give you a new perspective on creating a future that will be both rewarding and successful. The author uses personal experiences to relate the principles he has laid out, many times in hilarious fashion. If you want some insight into the culture that is plaguing corporations and individuals today, and how to avoid it, plus be thouroghly entertained, then I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Is your future a fence or a frontier?.......2003-07-24

    The Tapestry Principles
    1. We'll all look at the same future, but won't see the same future. For some, the future will be a fence; for others, a frontier.
    2. Change is a natural human condition; resisting it, and unnatural response.
    3. Success is simple: do what you love to do to help others get what they need.

These are the first three of nine Tapestry Principles that are found on the introduction page of Joe Estey's first book, The Tomorrow Tapestry. In this book, you will learn about successful mobility, which the author contends is the only thing that counts in the 21st Century.

This 220 plus page paperback book is laid out in five sections. The first is the title section and constitutes Chapter 1. Chapters 2 through 16 explore The Fabric of Change. The Pattern of Our Purpose is addressed in Chapters 17 through 28. Chapters 29 through 34 deal with The Artists is Our Lives. The Final Thread: Passion is the subject of his final chapter. Estey focuses on several of his Tapestry Principles in each of these sections. He does this using a refreshing and insightful mixture of historical fact, anecdotes, and quotations logically melded to support his principles. The theme throughout is "The future belongs to those who prepare for it!" - Ralph Waldo Emerson. Why should we be interested in the future? Because, as Charles Kettering pointed out, "that is were I am going to spend the rest of my life."

In Chapter 7, Estey notes that life is about choices and we either get to make choices or are forced to do so. What is the difference? - your attitude to change and choices it presents. A positive outlook, working with what you have rather than decrying the lack of some resource, and persistence are key elements in achieving success (changing). Another central theme that comes through in many of his anecdotes is found in the third principle, we best serve our own interests by striving to meet the needs of others. In the end, it is your attitude that makes the difference between life and death. How many people do you know who are dead in spirit because of their inability or unwillingness to accept, even embrace, change? Read Joe Estey's The Tomorrow Tapestry. You will be changed, and you will like it.

      Book Description

As News Tribune columnist Denny MacGougan points out, Tacoma has undergone some exciting changes in recent years, and is a place of natural beauty that continually improves upon itself.

MacGougan's lighthearted journey through present-day Tacoma offers ample evidence to support his love of the city. He reveals Tacoma as a place of energy and excitement, beauty and tranquillity, opportunity and fun. MacGougan draws Tacoma in vivid colors by taking the reader through the city's fascinating history, from Mount Rainier to Bob's Java Jive and beyond.

Here you'll be reminded of the reasons behind Tacoma's friendly rivalry with Seattle. You'll recall the stories behind "Galloping Gertie" and her eventual demise. And most important, you'll realize anew that Tacoma is a city of progressive attitudes and cultural breadth that invites people from all over to visit its shores.

With the aid of more than 150 beautiful photographs, it's easy to appreciate MacGougan's love of his city and the laid-back attitude that it inspired in its residents. Living in Tacoma is both easy and attractive, and, for MacGougan's money, can't be beat.

With so many years of community effort and partnership, the beautiful geographic settling, and the visionary actions of businessmen and women, Tacoma is destined to maintain its position of leadership in the heart of Puget Sound. It truly is, and will continue to be, tomorrow's city...today.

2 out of 5 stars Just the facts, ma'am..........2002-02-07

I'm currently using this as a college textbook. It's taken me three weeks to work through three chapters. After two weeks, I ended up skimming over the 2nd and 3rd chapters just to make it through without stopping 4 or 5 times wondering what it was I was reading. I can see it's loaded with important information, but it's an effort to stay focused. The headings and subheadings are bland and repetitive. I often feel like I'm rereading a section, but how can I tell when sections I've read aren't memorable? The authors also show a knack for stating the obvious. For instance, "Identifying the required KSAs is not as obvious, but they are still relatively easy to obtain, by examining each task and asking the question, 'What knowledge, skills, and/or attitudes are necessary to perform a particular task?'" (p.143).

I find it ironic that a book that is attempting to teach people how to make training pertinent and interesting to others is itself uninteresting. This is a book for those who just want the facts and don't care if the writing and presentation are lively or engaging.

This conceptual introduction to data mining within the context of business and marketing research provides an eclectic approach to the field. Using worked examples and business case studies, the volume answers the four questions: why is data mining important to business and marketing research; how is data mining different from other types of research; what do we learn from data mining; and how do we do data mining? The book explains data mining, traditional methods, data-adaptive methods and applications in business and marketing with business cases and provides lists of tables, figures and exhibits. For Managers and Analysts.

One of the main reasons I bought the book was the promise of case data and sample code especially in R (and splus). However, the prentice Hall site had only presentation slides (pdf files) and no data or code. Moreover their own tech support had no cluse as to why these files were missing.
This is a classic example of overpromise and underdeliver. I would avoid this book in the future.

          Product Description

Several forces are transforming the structure and content of the marketing profession. Marketers are seeing increasingly faster changes in the marketplace and are barraged with an ever increasing amount of information. While many view traditional marketing as art and some view it as science, the new marketing increasingly looks like engineering. This textbook, combined with a comprehensive collection of 26 leading-edge software models provides the student with the know-how and tools to collect the right information and perform analysis to make better marketing plans, better product designs, and better decisions.

Our purpose in writing this book is to help educate and train a new generation of marketing managers. We aim to train marketing engineers to translate concepts into context-specific operational decisions and actions using analytical, quantitative, and computer modeling techniques. We link theory to practice and practice to theory.

"I am very excited about this book. Finally marketing can exhibit its scientific muscle and move from opinions-based decision making to data-based decision making. I think this is a very important book that will spawn a new discipline within marketing."
          Philip Kotler, Northwestern University

The content and tutorials of this text are useful. They will familiarize the reader with the types of tools and methods that are used to support marketing decisions.

In many cases the inputs of the analysis exercises are given and too subjective to duplicate the results with alternate data. However, the processes help organize your thoughts.

I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to develop a general understanding of marketing analytics.

I also found the software a bit buggy but usable none the less.

I bought this book for an advanced marketing class in my MBA program. The authors explain in detail the elementary topics which are covered in basic marketing class. For e.g. they talk in detail about segmentation, but they fail to explain thoroughly clustering and factor analysis. The tutorial also lacks depth and does not interpret the numbers.

2 out of 5 stars much below expectations.......2004-06-08

No explanation of conjoint analysis basics, no logical sequance of chapters, in other words in drastic need of improvement

1 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs!.......2002-03-30

This -- unfortunately -- is a terrible book. It is badly in need of editing. It is obvious from the authors' introductory chapter that their command of the English language is marginal at best. It would have helped to have a native English speaker review the manuscript before publication.
Even worse, the level of the contributed papers varies so widely that this book cannot serve as either an introduction or as a survey for knowledgable readers. I was hoping that at least one paper would explain the basics of conjoint analysis. But most of the authors either avoided technicalities, or else assumed that readers were already familiar with the model and its variants. Not one of them bother to explain the terminology, to write down a model clearly and succinctly, and to explain how the analysis works.
Overall, this was quite a disappointing book

This is an excellent book on Conjoint Analysis. It was easy to read and understand.
