Hudock is one of many writers who see civil society as the answer to solving many of the planet's problems. It is a potential that I too believe in.
The problem is that Hudock tends to gloss over the very real problems that afflict this sector, namely poor governance, a lack of accountability and transparency.
Unless, you have a realistic picture of what you are talking about, your analysis is bound to fail.
It is an interesting book though and people interested in this area should consider having a quick look at it.

Virginia Hodgkinson and Michael Foley have assembled a definitive collection of 24 readings from the writings of thinkers who have shaped the civil society tradition in Western political thought through the ages. Their clear, intelligent introduction establishes a framework for understanding the complex and perennial debate over conditions of citizenship and the character of the good society. The text moves from the origins of the debate, a consideration of Aristotle's vision of political order, the polis, through the "civic republicanism" of Machiavelli and his English and American followers. It also discusses Hobbes's and Montesquieu's conceptions of natural law and the social contract, Immanuel Kant and Adam Ferguson and the emergence of the modern notion of civil society in the late 18th century, and the thoughts and theories of Hegel, Marx, and Gramsci.
Contemporary discussion of civil society in the US started with Berger, Newhaus, and others who addressed the role of intermediary institutions and the political process. In the 1980s, especially as the Cold War ended, writing on civil society exploded. The anthology tracks the key works that have influenced public dialogue in this era. Chapters by Walzer, Barber, Putnam, Almond and Verba, Shils, and others describe the role of association in civil society and its role in democratic governance. As the concept of "civil society" grows ever more prominent in academic and public considerations of politics and political organization, citizen participation, political alienation, voluntary organizations, privatization, government deregulation, and "faith-based" charities, Civil Society: A Reader is the essential historical and theoretical text.

Civil wars attract much less attention than international wars but they are becoming increasingly common and typically go on for years. Where development succeeds, countries become progressively safer from violent conflict, making subsequent development easier. Where development fails countries can become trapped in a vicious circle: war wrecks the economy and increases the risk of further war. This new World Bank Policy Research Report challenges the belief that civil wars are inevitable and proposes an agenda for global action.

These days, when the idea of failed states occupies the minds of many policymakers in the developed world, Collier provides a timely study of how civil war can help bring about a failed state. He studies several decades of civil wars, spread across the world, though primarily focused on Africa. In these wars, we see how the development of those countries was severely stunted. From Liberia to Sudan to Cambodia and other places.
The tragedy of course is that these countries already had parlous economies, prior to the conflicts. Plus, during the wars, conditions naturally worsened.
Quite a thoughtful book. The author and, implicitly, the World Bank, argue that until such wars end, it is futile to seriously contemplate any development policy.

A comparative study of two Kenyan NGOs, the Undugu Society of Kenya and the Green Belt Movement, demonstrates that civil society may either oppose an oppressive state or accommodate it. These examples demonstrate the disparate roles NGOs can take in the context of contemporay African politics.

excellent reading on solutions to the global mess.......1998-11-24
Writing a short book on the global economic and social situation means you have to simplify, and this can be tricky. Korten wrote a large book (When Corporations Rule The World) where he studied the key arguments in detail. I think this enabled him to now write a pamphlet that organizes the key arguments for a more democratic a more participatory society in a very didactic way. The global mess we have created may be complicated, but in fact the alternatives are fairly simple, and Korten presents them with art.

Media bias as usual.......2006-08-04
I was offended by the accusation in this book that poor black people were relegated to living in lower land in New Orleans and surrounding parishes. As usual the media wants to push their liberal, racial agenda on the south. Check the actual statistics on this hurricanes. More whites lost their lives than black and many, many wealthy areas (for blacks and whites)were devastated. Not just lower income people. We sick of having to correct people on this point.

Past date to raise money, but still an important read.......2006-04-24
The photos and accounts delivered in this Time representation of Hurricane Katrina are invaluable. Bodies floating by houses, people trapped in their attics, the anger and frustration at the Superdome, the hope and good faith of the people searching for survivors. All of this is captured by great photojournalists and poignant captions. While some reviewers feel this book focuses on only two cities' ordeals with hurricane aftermath, I think the book captures what was happening in the worst cases. Having been published about a month after the occurance, you can leave the job of chronicling the entire event to a sociologist or someone more apt to turn a profit rather than raise money for the Red Cross. This book was published so quickly that I found many typos, ("Sept. 29th" instead of "Aug. 29th" was printed way too many times, and "kids" instead of "kinds", things that spell check wouldn't catch, but an editor should have). With that in mind, I think the goal was raising money and portraying what this country let happen to it's poor and elderly. Citizens don't build levees, governments do, and this government failed.
Biased reporting.......2006-03-13
This book, like most written and portraying Hurricane Katrina, leads the reader to the conclusion that New Orleans is the only area devastated thereby. For anyone's information, New Orleans was on the West, or weak, side of Katrina. New Orleans was flooded because: 1) elevation there is about 7 feet BELOW sea level and 2)their levy system has NEVER been built to withstand cat 3 or greater storms. EVERY drop of rain that falls in New Orleans has to be pumped out, one way or the other. If the citizens of New Orleans had put more money into improving their levy system instead of the SuperDome, they might very well be living in dry and undamaged homes today instead of morning their dead and trying to put their city back together. New Orleans will be rebuilt someday and I hope and pray that they have learned and benefited from this disaster and won't make the same mistakes again. If you want to read and look at a balanced book coverning Hurricane Katrina, this isn't it.
Time: Hurricane Katrina: The Storm That Changed America.......2006-02-25
Having lived through the Hurricane Katrina (I worked through it at one of only 3 surviving hospitals in metro New Orleans), the pictures are so profound. It comes as close to representing whatI experienced as can be represented by pictures. I highly recommend. This is one of two books that I've found that paint an accurate picture.
