There are no short cuts to delivering a high impact speech. Ever smile and shake your head in disbelief at a flawless presentation? Have you ever considered the amount of preparation that goes on before a speech? Writing and re-writing. Yes, writing for your speech! It may seem mandatory to some, but several continue to attempt escapes without preparing for a speech.

High Impact Speeches provides a step-by-step, structured and strategic methodology towards developing a speech that will move minds, win businesses, and change the world. But just when you thought you were merely going to be issued a template to copy from, Heller screams the importance of self-identify; retaining the traits that make you unique and dismissing the habits that make you ineffective. He has deconstructed the Speech so he can pick and present the various fundamental aspects that will lead your speech to success.

The former political advisor to Rt. Hon Denus Healey MP, and Rt. Hon Gerald Kaufman MP, there is no doubt Heller knows what he's talking about (no pun intended).

For students, this book will also prove a mighty tool at understanding the form and structure of speeches.

But it's not just about talking. Heller also includes tips on research techniques, note making, and exploiting the media to get the most out of your little speech.

          Book Description

Thanks to inexpensive computers and data communications, the speed and volume of human communication are exponentially greater than they were even a quarter-century ago. Not since the advent of the telephone and telegraph in the nineteenth century has information technology changed daily life so radically. We are in the midst of what Gerald Brock calls a second information revolution.

Brock traces the complex history of this revolution, from its roots in World War II through the bursting bubble of the Internet economy. As he explains, the revolution sprang from an interdependent series of technological advances, entrepreneurial innovations, and changes to public policy. Innovations in radar, computers, and electronic components for defense projects translated into rapid expansion in the private sector, but some opportunities were blocked by regulatory policies. The contentious political effort to accommodate new technology while protecting beneficiaries of the earlier regulated monopoly eventually resulted in a regulatory structure that facilitated the explosive growth in data communications. Brock synthesizes these complex factors into a readable economic history of the wholesale transformation of the way we exchange and process information.

The universal consequences of the revolution in information technology

The worldwide wave of democratization and the nearly total disappearance of communism at the end of the twentieth century were major economic and political changes of our time. These earth-shaking changes lead us to raise the question, Why now? Why did these developments occur as they did, when they did? In this book, Jean-Jacques Rosa offers an analysis of the "grand cycle" in social organization of the twentieth-century. He shows how the transformation in communication and information technology has led to the downfall of twentieth-century political and corporate hierarchies and is a driving force behind today's democratic free-market trend.

The author reveals the universal contemporary consequences, both good and bad, of the information technology revolution. He explains how it is bringing relentless corporation downsizing and shrinking bureaucratic government structures but will also continue to be a factor in the rise of terrorism and secessionist and regionalist movements around the world. Rosa also brings an important historical perspective to current developments, explaining why democracy was abandoned by nearly every country in the world between the 1920s and 1960s and why totalitarian regimes prospered in the 1950s but began to rapidly fall behind democracies in the 1980s.

Jean-Jacques Rosa's detailed economic, organizational, and technical analysis presents a captivating insight into the history, politics, and ideology of corporations and nation-states at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Jean-Jacques Rosa is a professor of economics and finance at Institut d'Edtudes Politiques (Sciences Po, Paris) and dean of the MBA Sciences Po Program, which he launched there in 1993. He is a member of the Mont Pélerin Society, the American Economic Association, and the American Finance Association.

5 out of 5 stars A New View of the 20th Century .......2007-08-21

The collapse of socialism and centralization is the most important and surprsing development of the late 20th Century. The more-of-less authoritarian, state-directed form of organizaion was once considered the only modern, practical approach. Now, it seems quaint. Rosa provides a sweeping explanation of this and the the closely-related resurgence of democracy and poliitcal decentralization, based on the transactions costs analysis pioneered by Nobelist Ronald Coase. This analysis is now a staple of applied economics, especially the field of industrial organization. But Rosa's application is new. The idea is simple and powerful: advances in communicating and computing reduced the tranactions costs of producing and governing with smaller decentralized units, relating through the market. Big-picture economic thinking at its best, this book gives the best available explanation of the most important development in the last 50 years. I strongly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Political economy at its best.......2007-06-19

In short: this book documents the evolution, during the twentieth century, of the delicate balance between hierarchies and markets, the key premise being that businesses and governments face similar organizational challenges. They have to adapt over time. For instance, large, centralized organizations have truly become obsolete.

The same economic analysis employed by managerial economists to understand firms, multinationals and market structures is used here to understand other organizations, such as states, governments and democracies. In particular, Rosa shows the parallel developments of markets and individual rights.

The Information Revolution plays a crucial role here. Of course, books about the consequences of the Information Age are not new. "The Sovereign Individual: Mastering the Transition to the Information Age" (Davidson and Rees-Mogg, 1999) is just one of several noteworthy predecessors. However, Rosa's book is much more than an economic history book with a technological determinism flavor to it. It uses economic analysis to show how the declining cost of information has affected and continues to affect the optimal sizes of firms and states, and the nature of hierarchies.

This is an excellent read, full of intriguing insights and examples, geared towards the intellectually curious. There is a also fine presentation of a few subjects that will be useful to the average stock market investor: the trend towards downsizing, the decreasing optimal size of companies, and an explanation of the consequences of the M&As vogue (See his chapter 5).

          Highly recommended.

In The Second Industrial Revolution, John Donovan argues that with the advent of the Internet--primarily the World Wide Web--as a growing force in communication, companies that jump on the opportunities the Web affords are the ones that will survive, while others will flounder. It is not merely a matter of being on the Web, says Donovan. You need to continually reinvent your company in order to keep up with--if not stay ahead of--changes in society and the marketplace. The Web is not a cure-all for a sick company but merely a tool that makes it possible for companies to succeed.

Donovan believes that companies must do seven things in order to survive: add new value, edge into new businesses, enter niche markets, launch new products and services that will eclipse the old, enter new partnerships, work globally while thinking locally, and reengineer business processes. He discusses why each of these steps is vital for business survival in a wired world and demonstrates how to use the Web in order to thrive on constant change. He covers these topics in four sections: formulating business strategies for today and the future, creating the necessary technical infrastructure, understanding the technologies and players associated with the Internet, and managing the required change in your organization, the people within it, and yourself. Donovan illustrates his points with examples from a variety of companies. His depictions of both good and bad decisions show how fortune or failure can be reversed with amazing speed depending on a company's willingness to reinvent itself to meet changing conditions. --Elizabeth Lewis

3 out of 5 stars Good book in its day..........2000-04-10

Apart from the blatent brochure-style writing of the book, The Second Industrial Revolution actually does do a good job in "adding value" by presenting the user with a brief, yet fairly comprehensive, overview of e-commerce. The book won't add any new insights for seasoned veterans, but will provide those unfamiliar with the field a good introduction. It also provides a good review of basic concepts. Again, a little thin on content, but not bad for 1997.

If you are going to develop a WebMethod electronic commerce system such as EC_ purchasing, EC_ finance and EC_ customer system, I will give you a strong recommendation just 'read it, study it and Do it!' and you will find your dream will be come true in no time. Trust me 'Internet Changes Everything'!

Awesome...sumarizes everything that I have been thinking over the last 12 years. Every manager should be required to read this. Everything in this book is awesome (except where he makes a statement about evolution and Christianity - he was wrong there). It is a technical/practical visioning handbook that will get you off dead-center! I suggest this one. It is worth the cost.

I was eagerly awaiting this book only to find out that the 3 top local companies that I was interested in were not included at all. No big deal. They were little companies like Intel, Microsoft, and Nike.

Although this book is a valuable resource for actors in all respects looking to further education and employment opportunities, much of this information can be found by doing a "search" on the internet and perhaps a little added background investigating. Performing artists and actors of live theatre have it difficult enough to try to "make ends meet" from job to job (or lack thereof) on their poorly supported lifestyles and lowly advocated career choices. Support the arts, and lower the price of this mediocre book. Better yet, publish the information for free on an internet website.
