The Second Information Revolution
Gerald W. Brock Manufacturer: Harvard University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0674011783 |
Book Description
Thanks to inexpensive computers and data communications, the speed and volume of human communication are exponentially greater than they were even a quarter-century ago. Not since the advent of the telephone and telegraph in the nineteenth century has information technology changed daily life so radically. We are in the midst of what Gerald Brock calls a second information revolution.
Brock traces the complex history of this revolution, from its roots in World War II through the bursting bubble of the Internet economy. As he explains, the revolution sprang from an interdependent series of technological advances, entrepreneurial innovations, and changes to public policy. Innovations in radar, computers, and electronic components for defense projects translated into rapid expansion in the private sector, but some opportunities were blocked by regulatory policies. The contentious political effort to accommodate new technology while protecting beneficiaries of the earlier regulated monopoly eventually resulted in a regulatory structure that facilitated the explosive growth in data communications. Brock synthesizes these complex factors into a readable economic history of the wholesale transformation of the way we exchange and process information.

The Second Twentieth Century: How the Information Revolution Shapes Business, States And Nations (Hoover Institution Press Publication)
Jean-Jacques Rosa Manufacturer: Hoover Institution Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0817947426 |
Book Description
The universal consequences of the revolution in information technologyThe worldwide wave of democratization and the nearly total disappearance of communism at the end of the twentieth century were major economic and political changes of our time. These earth-shaking changes lead us to raise the question, Why now? Why did these developments occur as they did, when they did? In this book, Jean-Jacques Rosa offers an analysis of the "grand cycle" in social organization of the twentieth-century. He shows how the transformation in communication and information technology has led to the downfall of twentieth-century political and corporate hierarchies and is a driving force behind today's democratic free-market trend.
The author reveals the universal contemporary consequences, both good and bad, of the information technology revolution. He explains how it is bringing relentless corporation downsizing and shrinking bureaucratic government structures but will also continue to be a factor in the rise of terrorism and secessionist and regionalist movements around the world. Rosa also brings an important historical perspective to current developments, explaining why democracy was abandoned by nearly every country in the world between the 1920s and 1960s and why totalitarian regimes prospered in the 1950s but began to rapidly fall behind democracies in the 1980s.
Jean-Jacques Rosa's detailed economic, organizational, and technical analysis presents a captivating insight into the history, politics, and ideology of corporations and nation-states at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
Jean-Jacques Rosa is a professor of economics and finance at Institut d'Edtudes Politiques (Sciences Po, Paris) and dean of the MBA Sciences Po Program, which he launched there in 1993. He is a member of the Mont Pélerin Society, the American Economic Association, and the American Finance Association.

The Second Industrial Revolution: Business Strategy and Internet Technology
John J. Donovan Manufacturer: Prentice Hall PTR ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0137456212 |
Amazon.com
In The Second Industrial Revolution, John Donovan argues that with the advent of the Internet--primarily the World Wide Web--as a growing force in communication, companies that jump on the opportunities the Web affords are the ones that will survive, while others will flounder. It is not merely a matter of being on the Web, says Donovan. You need to continually reinvent your company in order to keep up with--if not stay ahead of--changes in society and the marketplace. The Web is not a cure-all for a sick company but merely a tool that makes it possible for companies to succeed.Donovan believes that companies must do seven things in order to survive: add new value, edge into new businesses, enter niche markets, launch new products and services that will eclipse the old, enter new partnerships, work globally while thinking locally, and reengineer business processes. He discusses why each of these steps is vital for business survival in a wired world and demonstrates how to use the Web in order to thrive on constant change. He covers these topics in four sections: formulating business strategies for today and the future, creating the necessary technical infrastructure, understanding the technologies and players associated with the Internet, and managing the required change in your organization, the people within it, and yourself. Donovan illustrates his points with examples from a variety of companies. His depictions of both good and bad decisions show how fortune or failure can be reversed with amazing speed depending on a company's willingness to reinvent itself to meet changing conditions. --Elizabeth Lewis
