Customer Reviews:
Outstanding!.......2007-05-04
This book should be required reading for all those interested in quality development processes. The authors depart from tedium to provide a clear and well thought presentation of ideas (often coupled with intuitive anecdotes) that paint a vivid understanding of the big picture. Outstanding!!
Bridges the Gap between Theory and Practice.......2007-04-30
This is a great book that starts out with the premise that to improve all facets of software development and total quality management, you need to look inside. The human being is seen as an indissoluble entity; we cannot work with the mind without also taking account of the body. The two are closely related with, for example, particular emotions being associated with certain postures and the authors take this into account. This all maps wonderfully to The Elaboration, Construction and Transition phases that are divided into a series of timeboxed iterations, and the authors help you step through each part of the phases and relate them to concrete examples of management and project techniques. It is a superb book, I bought a copy but I understand there will be a new edition online with extra chapters that will definitely get me to buy it all over again. This is the kind of book I've been looking for and have now, seemingly have finally found.

Customer Reviews:
LIMS RFP Assistance.......2005-09-28
The laboratory manager assigned me to lead the team to search for a new LIMS. I had interviewed several consultants to assist in the process and requested quotes to create and evaluate a request for proposal for our laboratory. The quotes came back in the thousands of dollars; my manager decided that it would be more cost effective to perform this task internally. So I obtained a copy of the book for the LIMS team members and we read the book to gain a better understanding of the LIMS subject matter. The book was informative and provided many definitions which were helpful in understanding much of the material which was new to our team. The book contained a sample request for proposal that with minor customization was a good fit for our laboratory. The book was informative and the sample request for proposal saved a considerable amount of time and money, since we had never written one before. This book provided guidance in the selection and implementation of a new LIMS for our laboratory.
Save your money.......2005-03-10
There are better descriptions of Laboratory Information Management for free in a trade magazines and white papers on any vendor site. Most of the book consists of definitions. The first chapter, titled, "Historical Perspective," should be about the early development of LIMS; surprise it is a list of historic events in the evolution of computers
The chapter on LIMS evaluations has a section that is two sentences long on the topic of Hardware/Software Configurations. It informs the reader that the vendor should inform you as to whether the software will run on your computer. Duh! The next section on Database Management tops this in that it is a whole sentence long. I can only wonder what the first edition of this book was like, since this is the expanded version. This is more like an outline for a book that should be written, or a student term paper that was written the night before it was due.
I am now totally annoyed that I have to spend by lunch hour going to the post to return this book.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent TEXTBOOK with the more current approach........1999-12-08
It is a BRAVE book that runs against the grains when compared to the regular, run-of-the-mill management information systems book.
This is a TEXT BOOK, for students at the junior level in the US.
What I like about the book is it is brave in accepting TQM, Reengineering and Michael Porter's value chain model as a set of key to gain a strategic prowess.
When a stance is taken as to ACCEPT those, then we don't need to worry about proofs for that stance. Let's just believe them.
Next, those set of systems translate into strategies. Strategies must be quantified, right? When you quantify a strategy by computerizing it then you come face to face with computerized information systems.
Then you'll be asked about Data Communications, Internet (the media that makes those data communicate), the client/server, the data base, the whole bit.
Of course, the text is very kind to include the Economics consideration on the wake of establishing the systems, also included is the systems development aspect when we really want to create an information systems project.
This is an excellent book for those who need a survey on the huge and much threatening field of Management Information Systems - Computer Based.

Book Description
Breaking tradition in describing Information Technology (IT), also known as Information Systems (IS), this book sets its sights on educating business and technical personnel at all levels on how to bridge the communication and quality gap between their respective areas. Taking action before preliminary planning has taken place costs money, especially when it involves technology. Learn from the experts the time-saving, action-oriented techniques that disprove the tired, dated mind-set that has until now excluded technology from corporate planning. Properly applied, these techniques will transform your decisions into actions that result in the implementation of innovative technology-on time and within budget. Discover methods of blending the desires of technicians-who want the newest technology, often regardless of cost-with that of the business area, allowing both to work in harmony. Successful methods are illustrated.
Customer Reviews:
Total Quality in IT.......2002-05-07
This book gives a solid overall explanation about information technology (IT). The Introduction to Technology is a facinating account of the historical development and the Project Management chapter is an excellent generic overview that is presented in an applicable manner to any information systems project.
The sample horror stories about pros and cons related to projects are a must read. The determining the customer needs and assigning weights chapter could be utilized by other than information systems personnel.
This book is suggested reading for Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Chief Operations Officer (COO) of companies that are growing their information technology organization.
The book would be an excellent text or reference source for courses about managing information systems.
Overall Explanation about Information Systems.......2000-06-05
This book gives an overall explanation about information systems. The chapter detailing sample job descriptions is outdated since there are no web/electronic commerce positions; however, the ones mentioned do remain viable.
The Project Management chapter is excellent since a generic overview is presented that would be applicable to any information systems project. The sample horror stories are good examples about pros and cons related to projects. The determining the customer needs and assigning weights chapter could be utilized by other than information systems personnel.
This book is suggested reading for Chief Financial (CFO) and Chief Operations (COO) officers of small to mid-sized companies that are growing and enlarging their information technology organization.
The book would be an excellent text or reference source for courses about managing information systems.
