Book Description

There may not be a more practical addition to the library of any book lover, parent, or college student this year than Stephen Windwalker's Buying Books Online: Finding Bargains and Saving Money with Booksense Stores, Amazon Marketplace, and Other Online Sites.

Windwalker is the longtime bookseller who wrote the book on Amazon Marketplace and online bookselling with his recent bestselling entrepreneurship title Selling Used Books Online: The Complete Guide to Bookselling at Amazon's Marketplace and Other Online Sites, one of the top 20 small business titles of 2002 at Amazon. In his new book Windwalker demonstrates the same capacity for providing the inside scoop as he shows book buyers how they can safely navigate the global internet book marketplace to find the new, used, or rare books they want and need, in great condition, at huge savings.

For starters, Windwalker's book helps buyers to understand the basic terminology of bookselling so that they will be able to distinguish between different copies of a title with respect to condition, edition, binding, size, and age. They will learn how to evaluate the apparent professionalism of a seller based on customer feedback, book descriptions, customer service policies, and other available information, and are provided with a helpful listing of the best places to buy books on the Internet. Beyond these basics, the book buyers will pick up some useful "tricks of the trade:"

· How to use "pre-orders" and "wants lists" to get the more scarce books you seek, at the best possible prices;

· When and how to use email to communicate with a seller to pin down important information;

· How to build a special relationship with a seller by establishing yourself as a responsive, repeat buyer;

· How to request and get special assistance in building a collection, acquiring a set of an author's first editions, or buying the books on your college course syllabi;

· How to read, use, and leave customer feedback to help yourself and other potential buyers;

· How to make the best use of available payment methods to protect yourself against fraud and to get your orders shipped as quickly as possible;

· When to consider re-selling or donating one or more of the books that you have purchased, and how to make the most of that experience;

· How to use a title-searching site such as Bookfinder.com to help you identify the "best buy available" for any book you are seeking;

· How to develop a quick reference checklist to evaluate a seller before clicking through to submit a purchase; and much, much more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars How To Buy Books Online.......2005-05-25

Buying books is much more enjoyable and much more affordable now than it was in years past for many reasons. The prices of new books online are lower than in traditional bookstores. There is less overhead in an online bookstore. Also, in additon to new books, many online bookstores sell used books which can be priced much lower than a new book. Also, many books are OOP and the used book is the only way to find a copy. The internet has truly opened up a world of books to any interested buyer.

5 out of 5 stars Why do you need this book?.......2003-02-13

As e-commerce is more and more integrated into our lives, many more people are using the internet to find and purchase books they need for many different reasons. How is a buyer to make decisions? To know how to choose which seller to use? The price of this book will be saved again and again as any buyer becomes more aware and more knowledgeable about buying books online. Whether you hope to provide books for your children, for a college class, or to find the best deals on the latest best sellers, you will become a more savvy buyer after reading this book. And remember, the more knowledgeable a buyer is, the more we sellers need to be knowledgeable. Knowledge benefits all of us.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful and fun to read.......2003-02-13

This book is going to save me a lot of money on books for myself and for my son, his cousins, now and probably when it is time to start buying college books too. It's a very thorough manual with helpful glossaries, abbreviatin guides, and some very good advice for finding the online booksellers most likely to provide good customer service. It's also enjoyable to read and it is obvious that the author has a great sense of humor, loves books, and understands what drives people to buy them.

    Book Description

    The Terminal Classic in the Maya Lowlands revisits one of the great problems in Mayan archaeology—the apparent collapse of Classic Maya civilization from roughly A.D. 830 to 950. During this period the Maya abandoned their power centers in the southern lowlands and rather abruptly ceased the distinctive cultural practices that marked their apogee in the Classic period. Archaeological fieldwork during the past three decades, however, has uncovered enormous regional variability in the ways the Maya experienced the shift from Classic to Postclassic society, revealing a period of cultural change more complex than acknowledged by catastrophic models.

    Featuring an impressive roster of scholars, The Terminal Classic, now available in paperback, presents the most recent data and interpretations pertaining to this perplexing period of cultural transformation in the Maya lowlands. New in paperback; the hardcover edition was selected as a Choice 20! 04 Outstanding Academic Title.

      Book Description

      Kamari Maxine Clarke and Deborah A. Thomas argue that a firm grasp of globalization requires an understanding of how race has constituted, and been constituted by, global transformations. Focusing attention on race as an analytic category, this state-of-the-art collection of essays explores the changing meanings of blackness in the context of globalization. It illuminates the connections between contemporary global processes of racialization and transnational circulations set in motion by imperialism and slavery; between popular culture and global conceptions of blackness; and between the work of anthropologists, policymakers, religious revivalists, and activists and the solidification and globalization of racial categories.

      A number of the essays bring to light the formative but not unproblematic influence of African American identity on other populations within the black diaspora. Among these are an examination of the impact of “black America” on racial identity and politics in mid-twentieth-century Liverpool and an inquiry into the distinctive experiences of blacks in Canada. Contributors investigate concepts of race and space in early-twenty-first century Harlem, the experiences of trafficked Nigerian sex workers in Italy, and the persistence of race in the purportedly non-racial language of the “New South Africa.” They highlight how blackness is consumed and expressed in Cuban timba music, in West Indian adolescent girls’ fascination with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and in the incorporation of American rap music into black London culture. Connecting race to ethnicity, gender, sexuality, nationality, and religion, these essays reveal how new class economies, ideologies of belonging, and constructions of social difference are emerging from ongoing global transformations.

                Book Description

                The first book to establish hurricanes as a key factor in the development of modern Cuba, Winds of Change shows how these great storms played a decisive role in shaping the economy, the culture, and the nation during a critical century in the island's history.

                Always vulnerable to hurricanes, Cuba was ravaged in 1842, 1844, and 1846 by three catastrophic storms, with staggering losses of life and property. Louis Pérez combines eyewitness and literary accounts with agricultural data and economic records to show how important facets of the colonial political economy--among them, land tenure forms, labor organization, and production systems--and many of the social relationships at the core of Cuban society were transformed as a result of these and lesser hurricanes. He also examines the impact of repeated natural disasters on the development of Cuban identity and community. Bound together in the face of forces beyond their control, Cubans forged bonds of unity in their ongoing efforts to persevere and recover in the aftermath of destruction.

                    Book Description

                    After Monte Albán reveals the richness and interregional relevance of Postclassic transformations in the area now known as Oaxaca, which lies between Central Mexico and the Maya area and, as contributors to this volume demonstrate, achieved cultural centrality in pan-Mesoamerican networks. Large nucleated states throughout Oaxaca collapsed after 700 C.E., including the great Zapotec state centered in the Valley of Oaxaca, Monte Albán. Elite culture changed in fundamental ways as small city-states proliferated in Oaxaca, each with a new ruling dynasty required to devise novel strategies of legitimization. The vast majority of the population, though, sustained continuity in lifestyle, religion, and cosmology.

                    Contributors synthesize these regional transformations and continuities in the lower Rio Verde Valley, the Valley of Oaxaca, and the Mixteca Alta. They provide data from material culture, architecture, codices, ethnohistoric documents, and ceramics, including a revised ceramic chronology from the Late Classic to the end of the Postclassic that will be crucial to future investigations. After Monte Albán establishes Postclassic Oaxaca's central place in the study of Mesoamerican antiquity.

                      Book Description

                      As English colonists in the Caribbean quickly became large-scale slaveholders, they established new organizations of labor, new uses of authority, new laws, and new modes of violence, punishment, and repression in order to manage slaves. Concentrating on Barbados and Jamaica, England's two most important colonies, Amussen looks at cultural exports that affected the development of race, gender, labor, and class as categories of legal and social identity in England. She demonstrates that the cultural changes necessary for settling the Caribbean became an important, though uncounted, colonial export.

                        Book Description

                        Giovanni Graziani examines Gorbachev's reforms in terms of economic relations with the Third World and presents a detailed and sophisticated statistical analysis of Soviet economic assistance and trade. This book critically evaluates all the statistical data from Soviet and United Nations sources and presents the changing Soviet attitude toward indebtedness and the growing dissatisfaction expressed by both the Third World and the U.S.S.R. over the management of Soviet aid. The author notes a contradiction between Gorbachev's strategy and statistical evidence for the first years of his office, but stresses that the recent moves to trade with South Korea and other Asian countries are bound to affect the Soviet geographical pattern of trade. His estimates show the increasing importance of agricultural products and fuels in Soviet imports and of military equipment and fuels in its exports. Particularly interesting is what Graziani calls the "oil imbroglio," a triangular trade pattern in which the U.S.S.R. has increased its imports of crude oil from the Third World for reexport to the West in order to stabilize its export earnings in hard currencies threatened by falling oil prices. The book concludes that no expansion of Soviet economic ties with the Third World is foreseen in the short run and that eventual Soviet participation in international economic organizations might further entail new conflicts with the Third World.

                          4 out of 5 stars Dated, but still a classic .......2005-12-18

                          I have got the 1959 edition, but have the feeling the book has not changed much since then. In 1959 this was an above-average book aimed at the general public. It illustrates the woods treated by distribution maps, botanical line drawings and black-and-white photographs. Content was pretty good, with the names, both scientific and trade names, very much in order.

                          Today it indeed looks quite dated, and the black-and-white photographs do look sad. These days, a much more attractive book with the same content could be put together. However, I don't really know any book that actually does this (and the most likely candidates cost a lot more). All in all, I'd still recommend this book for a wood library, although obviously it would be a poor choice as a first (or second or third) book. There are more attractive books on the market today, and this is dated, but not really superseded.

                          1 out of 5 stars Know your Woods? Not after reading this book.......2005-10-07

                          I don't understand why anyone would publish a book anymore with black and white illustrations. I know this is supposed to be a classic and all that so it's my own fault for not checking when I read the description. I don't even know why I'm keeping it; I'll never read it. You have to wade through tons of technical jargon and lengthy chapters that would be much better served by some large color photographs. Maybe that makes me shallow, I don't know, but there are much more 'complete guides' out there on this topic these days.

                          4 out of 5 stars Know Your Woods: A Complete Guide.......2003-05-01

                          This book seems to be complete and informative for basic information about the subject matter. It is a good reference for basic information. The reader must look elsewhere for detailed information (such as would be of interest to engineers, scientists, and luthiers).
