3 out of 5 stars Good book, stiff price.......2001-03-19

I found the book to be good, though a little terse. It instructs the user well on how to create a good business plan, but only provides a single example. Generally I thought the book to be pretty good, but at only 40 pages the price is really stiff. The book's worth 14.99.

        4 out of 5 stars Yes, It's good........2000-03-26

I've been looking for this book a long time. Here I found the final details to finish my BP. Very intuitive.

                Book Description

In the United States, less than one worker in five is currently in a labor union, while in Sweden, virtually the entire workforce is unionized. Despite compelling evidence for their positive effects, even the strongest European unions are now in retreat as some policymakers herald the U.S. model of market deregulation. These differences in union power significantly affect workers' living standards and the fortunes of national economies. What explains the enormous variation in unionization and why has the last decade been so hostile to organized labor? Bruce Western tackles these questions in an analysis of labor union organization in eighteen capitalist democracies from 1950 to 1990. Combining insights from sociology and economics in a novel way, Western views unions as the joint product of market forces and political and economic institutions.

The author argues that three institutional conditions are essential for union growth: strong working-class political parties, centralized collective bargaining, and union-run unemployment insurance. These conditions shaped the impact of market currents and explain variations across industries, across countries, and over time for the four decades since 1950. Between Class and Market traces the story of the postwar labor movements supported by a blend of historical investigation and sophisticated statistical analysis in an innovative framework for comparative research. Western tightly integrates institutional explanation and comparative method in a way that balances comparative generality with the unique historical experiences of specific cases.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Difficult and fairly obvious, but interesting and useful.......2000-05-24

The author undertakes a highly complex statistical study of 18 OECD countries during the period from 1950 to 1989 that correlates the growth of union density with the extent of left political parties, the centralization of worker representation and bargaining, that is, union structure and function, and union-paid unemployment benefits. The main point is that it is the class power of workers as reflected in pro-worker institutions that insulates unions from market forces such as the business cycle and permits unions to grow or maintain their standing.

This is not a book that makes an effort to find the historical basis of worker class power: why it exists in some places but not others. Furthermore, the reader cannot discern from this study the relative importance of class power as reflected in left political parties versus that reflected in centralized union structures and roles. Which way do the arrows of dependency point? Which comes first?

The author does show that those nations that have a strong mix of pro-worker institutions have been best prepared to withstand the forces of political conservatism, large unemployment levels, and globalization that emerged in the 1980s and continue to the present day.

The book is somewhat difficult and tedious to read. Its origin was for a PhD dissertation. It was assumed that the audience would have a background in advanced statistics, but there is room for the general reader. Furthermore, the book largely falls in the category of proving the obvious. At least by the 1930s it was obvious to all working classes that state and state-enabled or -permitted institutions ultimately based on workers' political power would be essential for their economic well being. Nonetheless, the book is interesting in its demonstrations of the importance of institutional power.

                    Book Description

In the post-Mao era, China's intellectuals have had a degree of intellectual freedom in the last twenty year not experienced since the 1949 revolution. Although China remains a Lenninist party state whose intellectuals still cannot criticize the political leadership or party without impunity, its economy has moved to the market and its society is in contact with the international community. Whereas in the Mao Zedong era intellectuals, with few exceptions, obediently carried out Mao's orders and expounded Maoist doctrine, in the post-Mao era intellectual life has become pluralistic and complex.

This edited volume highlights how Chinese intellectual activity has become more wide-ranging, more independent, more professionalized and more commercially oriented than ever before. The future impact of this activity on Chinese civil society is discussed as is the continually changing relationship between intellectuals and the party-state.

With Contributions form China scholars living both within and outside China, this volume provides the first comprehensive description of China's intellectuals in the post-Mao era. It is a topic, which will appeal to scholars of China as well as those whose research interests lie in Asian cultural studies and intellectual history.

                      Description:
Rapid developments in E-commerce can bring efficiency in the food market system by cutting transaction costs. However, it can also bring a battleground between developed and developing countries and also within developed countries because the New Economy emphasizes knowledge-based labor practices and low-skilled workers of trading nations compete for a shrinking need for their services. An Input-Output model is used to examine the effects on high-skilled and low-skilled worker demand, particularly in food and agriculture. The food and agricultural industries are significant employers of low-skilled labor. Food and agricultural trade has reduced low-skilled labor demand in the United States.

                        Book Description

In this comprehensive and accessible overview of trade unionism in Europe and beyond, Richard Hyman offers a fresh perspective on trade union identity, ideology, and strategy. He argues that the varied forms and impact of different national movements reflect historical choices on whether to emphasize a role as market bargainers, mobilizers of class opposition or partners in social integration. He also shows how traditional identities have been strained by changes in class relations, economic environment, and political realignments in modern society. Understanding European Trade Unionism will enable its readers to develop a theoretical understanding of the complex evolution of the complex evolution of trade unionism, and the historical development and current dilemmas of trade union in a harsh environment. It shows how inherited traditions can serve as both resources and constraints in responding to the challenges which confront them in today’s working world. Engaging, compelling and highly readable, Understanding European Trade Unionism both clarifies historical fact and enters into the current debate with a thought-provoking vision of the role of trade unionism in the Europe of today. This book is suitable for students and researchers alike in the field of industrial relations and labor history, as well as for courses in comparative politics, sociology, and international economics.

The starting point of the book is that trade unions operate in a triangular environment with vertices of markets, class, and society: they all contend with economic forces or markets, represent workers as a collectivity distinct from employers or as a class, and are necessarily a part of the larger society. However, according to the author, unions tend to gravitate to functioning between two of the vertices. He draws his examples from European trade unionism. Thus British trade unionism is depicted as operating between the dictates of markets and class considerations; German trade unionism exemplifies the tradeoffs between markets and society; Italian trade unionism represents a compromise between class and social considerations.

To act both as a market bargaining agent and as a class actor has contradictions. It is widely held that most workers desire a union to be a body that focuses on and stabilizes their particular employment and wages - not those of an entire class. And resulting bargaining agreements tacitly assume that unions will exert control over workforces. It is a position that essentially leaves unchallenged the rights of capital to control workplaces and the economy, but it has proven to be quite vulnerable, as economic pressures have increased in the last of the 20th century. Early 20th century Italian factory councils or the more recent British shop steward system gained some degree of worker control on a location-specific basis though largely outside the purview of bureaucratic unions. But no trade union body has ever consolidated working class interests sufficiently to be able to cause a transformation of capitalism in favor of working class interests.

Political power or standing permeates the entire discussion. Repeatedly it is the ability of working class interests to be a part of the political process that is key to their relative standing in both the larger society and in workplaces. The social integration or corporatism that is found throughout continental Europe includes trade union central bodies in peak-level macroeconomic discussions as well as other working class considerations, such as the establishment of works councils in workplaces. Trade unions are, in essence, social partners in this climate. They are also class actors in their ability to aggregate working class political power. A purely collective bargaining approach seems to be indicative of minimal political power and, in this era, of minimal effectiveness.

There is no doubt that the book is thought provoking. Do the poles of market, class, and society provide an adequate framework for understanding trade unionism? For this reviewer, class and society would be subsumed under political power with that power countering and influencing economic power. The discussions of the three particular trade union movements are quite tedious and sometimes provide confusion as well as clarity as to how those movements fit in the author's general framework. The more theoretical parts of the book are also a little difficult to follow with the qualifiers and exceptions sometimes diluting the central argument. But I think the book should be read by anyone wanting to take a new look at understanding trade union orientation.

5 out of 5 stars Savor this book.......2007-03-23

I heard Doug speak. Then I read his book. As the title suggests, he helps us be mindful as we embrace opportunities to serve others. As a business coach, I found this book provocative. His drescriptions of 7 parts/ roles is insightful. And his wisdom flows deep, with applicable tips that you can use with others. I urge you to read this book slowly, and to discuss it with others.

5 out of 5 stars This book breaks coaching out of the formula!.......2004-07-07

I love this book because instead of putting coaching into a series of formulas and canned techniques, Doug presents a holistic approach to coaching as a unique human interaction. The seven coaching roles he describes are useful and practical without being prescriptive, and the exercises really invite you to understand and know yourself as a canvas upon which the coaching conversation can happen.

Doug has written an important new perspective on coaching that all coaches, consultants, and managers can learn from. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Practical Guide.......2004-07-07

Doug has provided a clear and integrated model to assist people in understanding and applying some of the important skills in mindfulness and coaching. As a Global Executive Coach and mindfulness practitioner, I believe that executives from diverse backgrounds who are concerned with people development will find The Mindful Coach an insightful and practical guide.

5 out of 5 stars Coaching as a True Profession.......2004-07-07

Silsbee's writings challenge any coach to take his or her work to a whole new level. His system is profoundly ethical and personally demanding, ensuring gain for both the coach and the client. The more "coaching" rises to this level, the more honesty there will be in coaching as a true profession...and the more businesses would likely search for coaches skilled in Silsbee's methods.

5 out of 5 stars Coaching As An Act of Service.......2004-07-06

Doug Silsbee offers a rare perspective in writing for a business context. He speaks from a deeply personal experience of his own journey and how helping others must begin with looking at self.

This is a powerful book because it is written with a commitment to personal honesty, truth telling, and service. Doug makes a very strong case that this is what coaching is and should be all about.

The title would have you think that you're being given access to a wealth of inside information that most people don't know about. Well, that's only true if you are just stepping out into the big world on your own, or if you've been living paycheck to paycheck and not paying attention. For anyone who understands the basics of finance and business, this book won't tell you anything you haven't heard many times before. It's reasonably well written, although a good edit would have caught many of the typos and grammatical gaffes. And there is information provided here that everyone should know. So if your eighteen year old is heading out to their first apartment, this would be a good going away gift. If you itemize your tax deductions, or operate your own business, you'll find this elementary level reading at best.

5 out of 5 stars The book is a great money maker.......2007-08-07

I read this book after the Evolution Diet- and I really like the style of writing. It's lighthearted, but very good informative. I'm going to do two of the technique right away including start an online business to get ad revenue and change my deductions to give me more money throughout the year, save that money, and make money on interest instead of giving it to the government before it's due. This was really smart I thought- why is it that we give the government our money through income tax all year without earning interest, but once we're late on our tax return, we're instantly charged interest. Very suspect! Morse shows how to capitalize on that.

All the reviews are right on except for Bertie's review below - this one time reviewer seems like he/she has a bad job and is taking it out on this guy.

I got this book with Scam Proof and that looks good too.

2 out of 5 stars How to Take Advantage of the People Who Are Trying to Take Advantage of You.......2007-08-05

This book was disappointing. Most of the advice is obsolete, like "switch over to free checking." Huh? Free checking accounts came out almost a decade ago. Or "deduct business expenses from your taxable income." Well no kidding. If you already keep diligent finances, this book won't help you. It's for people who've been asleep their whole lives and need common-sense instructions (the same people who need instructions on how to use things like paper clips).

As a customer service worker myself, some of the advice made me cringe. For example, the author says to call your cell phone provider and constantly threaten to cancel so they'll give you a better plan. First of all, employees have business rules to follow and threats do absolutely nothing but make us roll our eyes. In fact, later we go to the break room and laugh about the stupid jerks who called and threatened us that day, especially if the customer has a long history of constantly returning things, cancelling service, re-signing up, like this author recommends doing. We can see EVERYTHING on an account (and we can also see any/all accounts associated with that name, regardless of different contact info), and every time a customer harasses us we literally take notes. We can also flag an account "bad customer." "Cust called demanding free shipping from expired catalog, threatened to shop elsewhere. Told him catalog exp 3 mos ago, cust very rude, hung up." The author views customer service employees as people "whose only care is getting off work later to go hang out with her friends at the mall." Ha! I WISH that was my only care. The only way we'll bend over backwards to help a customer is if something truly unfair happened, like the post office lost the package or if the credit card was charged twice. And I applaud Sprint for dropping all those bad customers, which made headlines recently.

Anyway, this book boasts "savings of over $100,000" but I couldn't find a single penny's worth of advice in it.

                            5 out of 5 stars A valuable resource.......2007-03-06

Morse uses a humorous, no-nonsense approach to help readers navigate the sea of credit card offers, tax refunds, cell phone rebates, and more everyday financial issues in the most advantageous way possible. He provides many valuable, never-before-revealed tips on how to make the most of your finances, and he sheds light on the often confusing policies of our major corporations, as well as on many of their shadier marketing ploys and full-blown scams. Whether it's with a lower interest rate or a free iPod, a newly discovered tax write-off or a free vacation, everyone will benefit from reading this book.

Don't expect to make a pile of money with this book, but do use it to help you be aware of how to deal with the tricksters, marketers, credit companies, and other predators with whom one must deal every day.
