1 out of 5 stars Too much stuff.......2006-07-06

I was project leader for Business Contingency planning and was looking for sound practical advice on how to proceed.
Frankly, this book is very wooly and contains far too much stuff.

Definitely not worth the money

Business Continuity Planning
by Kenneth L. Fulmer, CBCP

The Business Continuity Planning book focuses on guiding the reader to a plan and, to the book's credit, does not stray from this subject. The Planning Forms on CD-ROM are numerous and detailed. These forms can be of great assistance to the reader who is trying to develop a plan.

Business Continuity Planning is designed for use by entry-level professionals as well as by interested non-professionals. The book is very easily to read and is logically organized. The reader should know that there is an emphasis on the non-technical aspects of Information Technology / Disaster Recovery planning.

5 out of 5 stars Best That I Have Read.......2005-05-13

I have read a number of books on Business Continuity Planning. This book is by far the best. I have suggested to my business contacts to read this book and they all say they have benefited from the information. Even if your company decides not to develop a complete plan, you will find valuable steps you can take that will reduce your disaster risk easily and without major funding. It is set up like a workbook and takes you logically and methodically through the planning process from start to finish. I found it particulary beneficial that this guide enabled me to clearly explain to senior management the importance of developing a plan and the steps we should follow to develop ours. The book may not be for the seasoned BCP planner, but it is an invaluable resource for those of us who need to know the right questions to ask and what to do with the information once you get the answer. The CD-ROM that is included provides easy to follow worksheets, forms, samples and links to other resources that can be found on the Internet.

Mr. Fulmer has done us a great favor by putting this step-by-step guide together. I highly recommend it to anyone who newly faces this callenging task or needs to update their existing plan.

It is a good BCP Reference, instead of not making further comments and explanations about the Crisis Management Subject

This book takes an organization interested in continuity planning through the processes needed to develop an effective plan.

"Jim Barnes has succeeded in providing us a much-needed tool, with which we can condidently face many of the day-to-day challenges of business contingency planning ... Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Worse Book Ever.......2005-06-12

To begin with this book has the worse index ever. The book is lacking helpful information and filled with information that holds no value. The book is nothing more than a feeble attempt at providing a BCP template, of which you can find better and simpler on the Internet for free.

5 out of 5 stars Business Continuity Planning by James C. Barnes.......2002-08-12

Recently I had the opportunity to attend a training class by James Barnes and was provided a copy of Mr. Barnes's book as a reference and support tool. Since my attendance in his class, I've had an opportunity to read the book. I was very pleased to see that the tools provided in the book and in the class are a virtual roadmap with weighpoints along the way to help determine direction. I've been a Safety Engineer for over 30 years and have worked with critical path processes and procedures that were far less accurate and meaningful. While disaster planning has always been an integral part of Risk Management, the continuity aspect of the planning process was not well integrated. What we used to call disaster planning considered rebuilding a facility, it's interdependencies with other facilities, and business interruption. This book provides a outline and method for recovering each facility as an entity, from the facility's management critical necessity and contiunuity business point of view.
I highly recommend this book to "Top Management" and engineers who want to prepare their companies for any disaster.
Remember, it's not enough to have a disaster plan that gets you up and running. You need to have a plan that maintains the continuity for production, communications, and customer service, or business failure is imminent.
If your're fortunate enough to attend a seminar by this author, don't pass it up. If you can't attend a seminar, the book is worth every penny to business survival.

1 out of 5 stars Boiler Plate Consultant Material.......2002-07-11

Business continuity planning needs to be tailored to the organization and its needs. This book does not present a methodology which can be tailored as such. It, instead, provides boiler plate questionnaires and checklists which limit the user and the organization to the author's interpretation of what an organization needs. Basic stuff and not particularly useful.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Would Ever Want to Know About BCP.......2001-10-04

Highly recommended for people in the BCP field and those contemplating entry into the field.

This thin book provides the framework for a comprehensive business continuity plan. The author has taken the no-nonsense approach of using lists rather than blabbing a lot of text. As I read these lists, I said to myself "of course ... that's the way it should be done".

One little nitpicking: some of the lists are obvious. E.g., the author did not need to list five pages (!!!) of expendable supplies. A few ellipses on some of the longer, more obvious tables would have done the trick.

I used this book as a (secret) foundation for BCP work completed last spring. Now, with the phone ringing off the hook, it is more invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars Real-life experience.......2001-08-02

I have personally used this book as the model for evaluating business continuity in a billion dollar annual revenue company. The book offers excellent models for conducting the necessary business impact analysis (BIA) and analyzing the results. The book provides guidance for the entire process from consultant engagement to management strategic direction setting.

During the BIA process for my company, I worked with the book's author during a consultant engagement. I found the author to "practice what he preaches". The book's guidance comes from real-life experiences and results in practical and quality results. My company received a most rewarding product from the impact analysis, which provided the appropriate guidance to develop a comprehensive business continuity program.

The book is highly recommended if a company wants to be prepared to survive an extraordinary disaster event.

Mr. Fulmer's guide has given a strong start to our company, in our progression through this planning process. LPlummer-Energy Conservation Consultants, Inc.

3 out of 5 stars For Beginners Only.......2003-09-28

I have to agree with the reader who said this was very basic information, much of which is available elsewhere for free. But those who would really benefit from this book/CD -- beginners -- wouldn't know that, nor where to look. So this would be an excellent reference for them.
Unfortunately, it really wasn't worth the investment for me. I already have the background, I know where to find a great deal of information. I was enticed by the inclusion of the CD with pre-defined forms. Honestly, that was the greatest disappointment. Some of these 'forms' were nothing more than an MS Word document filled with lines. Yes, just lines. Example: The "Project Objectives" template contains the phrase "Project Objectives", followed by 30 lines of, well, lines.

I'm not here to say this book doesn't have value. I think it will be of monumental value to someone who is just starting out and/or putting together a BC/DR plan for a small to medium sized company. But anyone with a decent working knowledge of BC/DR principles should look elsewhere. There will be nothing new or particularly useful here.

4 out of 5 stars Publisher's Comment.......2003-02-02

This guide and companion CD-ROM (which contains forms, templates, etc.) is an unintimidating starting point for business continuity, particularly in an IT-focused organization of any size.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist or spend hundreds of hours to build a basic, functional business continuity program with this tool.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful Resource - Full of Thoughtful, Basic Instruction.......2001-07-08

This business continuity planning guide is just what I needed. Not having done one of these plans before, I was overwhelmed when I looked at some of the books on the subject in the library and on the Net. They all seemed to be written for someone far more knowledgeable about continuity planning than I. So I was relieved when a business associate suggested I check into the Fulmer Guide. I found that it is carefully written for someone who has newly assumed this responsibility.

I noted one of the other reviews of the Fulmer Guide, here on Amazon, and since our experience and opinion of it are so positive, I want to respond to their review description. They described this guide as:

"overpriced" - I think this price isn't very much at all, given what our company has at stake.

"of little value" - I guess that depends of the planning experience of the one using the guide. It was very valuable to me and my company.

"extremely basic" - Thank God!

"information can be found elsewhere for free" - I find most information I need is available to me for little or no money, if I have the time to find it and then to organize it. However, I didn't in this case.

I found it particularly useful that this guide enabled me to clearly explain to my management and our employees, the value of this plan and the process we were going to use to build ours. The guide helped us to consider the full spectrum of potential damage and interruption to our business that we face every day. The CD ROM that is included, provided us with all the guide's worksheets and that was very helpful. And after we had completed our plan, this guide instructed us on how to test its effectiveness and how to keep our plan up-to-date.

I highly recommend this guide to anyone who newly faces this challenging task of creating a business continuity plan.

5 out of 5 stars THERE IS NO MISUNDERSTANDING OF BUSINESS CONTINUITY MANAGEMENT IN THIS BOOK.......2005-08-08

Today's businesses are faced with many threats to the continued assurance of their trade.. Author Andrew McCrackan has done an outstanding job of providing the reader with a blueprint with which to assess their organization with regard to continuity assurance capability.

McCrackan begins this book by differentiating between business continuity and disaster recovery, because many of these terms are used interchangeably. Next, the author tells us that we must have an approach first to solving any problem. Then, he discusses top-down methodology. In addition, the author describes in detail the foundation level of the continuity assurance maturity model, and it focuses on the rationalization of your organization. He also describes how the level of the continuity assurance maturity model focuses on the identification and analysis of risks and the implementation of measures to reduce the probability of their eventuation. Then, he looks at the next level of the continuity assurance maturity model, with regard to the rating of components of your organization's infrastructure in terms of their criticality to the continuity of the business. The author then delves into the next level of the continuity assurance maturity model with regard to the rigor of the process. Next, he is concerned with the robustness of the architecture. Then, he defines resilience "as the ability to recover quickly from unpleasant or damaging events." The author then continues with his primary concern with recovery from a disaster event. Also, the author is concerned with the overall rating of continuity assurance capability. Next, he gives a precis of quality assurance principles that should be applied when implementing continuity assurance. At many points, the author states that "you will be faced with the option of outsourcing, whether it be to run a project or to provide a recovery facility." Finally, he includes two case studies as examples of commonly executed approaches to Business Continuity Management (BCM).

With the preceding in mind, the author has done an excellent job of making you take the first step to improving continuity across your organization. At the end of the day, you too must orchestrate your response and target your defenses to maintain your safety, security, and the overall continuity assurance of your organization's way of doing business.

            Book Description

Describing the men who have led the U.S. Treasury since its creation in 1789, this book profiles those who have held the cabinet position of Secretary of the Treasury from Alexander Hamilton to Robert Rubin. Each profile provides the reader with an understanding of the man, the problems he faced, and the contributions he made. While focusing on the economic policy problems of an era and the solutions the secretary offered, each profile also includes a vignette illustrating the secretary's personality and background. Some represent backgrounds of money and power, others backgrounds of simplicity and anonymity. Some came to the office with greater stature than when they left, while others made a significant mark on our nation's financial history. Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, besides collecting and dispersing the public revenue, made the Treasury a prime agency for promoting the country's economic development and fiscal soundness. Since the Great Depression, the Treasury's regulatory functions have been articulated and elaborated. Working with the President's cabinet and with maximum statistical data, the secretaries have sought to analyze the economic outlook and to coordinate official actions, including policies to maintain a strong and stable U.S. dollar. The essays in this book, written by 24 authorities, illustrate how the Secretary of the Treasury is responsible for formulating and recommending domestic and international financial, economic, and tax policy, participating in the formulation of broad fiscal policies with general significance for the economy, and managing the public debt. The biographies illustrate continuing themes of fiscal management as our nation evolved over 200 stormy years of history. They also provide an intimate look at 69 individual secretaries, with stories and facts about their leadership, ideas, style, and administrative prowess, together with their personality and family lives.

5 out of 5 stars If you love the Secretary of the Treasury ...........2005-09-28

If you love the Secretary of the Treasury (the position, not necessarily the man) then you'll love this book. This book is organized like a dictionary (duh) with alphabetical entries for each SoT. Everybody gets a 5-10 page bio written mostly by academic historians and economists (with a couple of banker types thrown in). There are around 25 different contributors, so the essays do vary a bit in emphasis and style, but overall the dictionary is a nice, cohesive piece of research. There's a chronological list of the SoT's up front so you can follow the office through time if you so desire.

I bought the book because I'm interested in the history of the Treasury Department. But the odd thing is -- the book is actually pretty interesting just as a history of the United States. Each short essay ends up focusing on a discrete time period and manages to capture many of the political and economic issues of the time. For example, good ol' Salmon P. Chase who was Lincoln's first SoT saw lots of interesting stuff during his career. Originally an officer of state bank, at Treasury he made recommendations for a national banking system (which was really more about establishing a stable currency and selling Treasury bonds than about regulating banks) that was the basis for the National Bank Act. Feeling rather cocky after that success, he ran against Lincoln for the Republican Presidential nomination, was quickly branded a traitor and lost out early. He came back to campaign for Lincoln, though, and as a reward he was made Chief Justice of the United States. In that capacity he oversaw the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson. That's the kind of stuff any history buff would enjoy.

The big weakness in the book is the lack of pictures or portraits. How do we know what these old codgers looked like? And the book only goes through Rubin. Come one guys, how about a pocket part update? Wouldn't the entry on O'Neill be worth it?

              Book Description

In this provocative book, C. Edwin Baker argues that print advertising seriously distorts the flow of news by creating a powerfully corrupting incentive: the more newspapers depend financially on advertising, the more they favor the interests of advertisers over those of readers. Advertising induces newspapers to compete for a maximum audience with blandly "objective" information, resulting in reduced differentiation among papers and the eventual collapse of competition among dailies.

4 out of 5 stars among the greats.......2001-01-16

this insightful work expands greatly upon already existing media studies maxims put forth by authors such as ben bagdikian and michael moore. it hones the point that the people must be able to make informed decisions in order to rule a democratic society, thus naturally prompts the question: are we truly democratic if advertising distorts our information?
