Book Description
Entrepreneur's Notebook propels you on a whirlwind tour of the start-up process. It is an invaluable reference for new and experienced entrepreneurs that includes chapters on a wide range of topics, from entrepreneurial team building to business plans to financing. This excellent book provides an incredible amount of practical information that will help you make smarter decisions and avoid costly mistakes. The author, Steven K. Gold, is an accomplished entrepreneur who has co-founded and led five early-stage ventures. As an investor and mentor, he also advises many entrepreneurs and young companies. He earned his B.S.E. in Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and his M.D. from Brown University Medical School.
Customer Reviews:
Nice Guide for Beginners.......2007-06-16
The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.
If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.
A Must-Have for Entrepreneurs.......2007-05-14
Steven gives great illustrations to drive home his insightful advice for entrepreneurs. As he's "been there, done that," we can take his advice to heart in the hopes of becoming a success like him!
Exellent Book.......2007-05-11
Great book for getting ready to open a new business. Would refer to anyone thinking about opening a business.
Brief and to the point.......2007-04-27
This is a delightful little book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and succesful. The book is well written and easy to follow and interesting to read.
This is a must read for entrepreneurs, particularly budding ones as the information the book provides is very practical and can help you avoid making costly errors. The book covers a wide range of topics including the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, among other things.
The book is an excellent companion for the entrepreneur that is well worth having.
Invaluable advice for the budding entrepreneur.......2007-03-04
This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.

Truly Excellent Book!.......2005-10-01
I was thrilled to finally get some serious and safe " how to" information on investing. I thoroughly read and enjoyed Peter Lynch's book " One Up On Wall Street", which is the true ABC guide to investing, but never felt confident enough to put my money in any sort of investment vehicle. This book helps the reader to diversify and thus reduce risk. Simple explanations and data to back up the authors' claims makes this an excellent guide for the first time investor.
A strong 5 stars!
Great Primer on Investing Basics and Risks Involved.......2004-08-20
Although I'm a veteran investor, I enjoyed reading this well-written updated third edition by two highly qualified authors. Everyone involved in investing in the stock market, mutual funds or separately managed accounts will glean useful information from this book. Composed of 22 chapters and three appendices, this 300-page paperback covers the key basics of investing.
This no-nonsense easy-to-read text explains the importance of determining your risk tolerance before you invest, understanding the difference between asset allocation and diversification so you don't make foolish mistakes, knowing how to determine your retirement income goals and capabilities, and investing for your children's education.
Many investors do not have a clear idea of the riskiness of the stock market. Perhaps after the the Nasdaq Composite Index fell from 5048 in March 2000 to 1100 in October 2002, investors learned the hard way that risk really matters. That is why one of the key discussion points that the authors hammer home is the comparison of investment risk vs. reward. The authors cover the risk-to-reward spectrum with numerical examples, the meaning of the efficient frontier, beta, and the standard deviation. One chapter provides a blueprint of how to build a diversified portfolio in five easy steps.
Additional chapters cover the basics of investing in active and passive mutual funds, their share classes, stocks, bonds, annuities, separate accounts and company stock options. Also provided is a 17-page glossary of investment terms.
If you have never invested in the stock market or have a minimal knowledge of how to play the game, then I highly recommend that your read this book before you place your hard-earned cash in the market so that the odds are in your favor. You need at least a basic knowledge prior to investing, otherwise your may lost a large portion of your capital without realizing what happened to you, and that would be a shame.
Useful info and easy to read........2004-07-16
An easy read yet full of useful info. The authors explained some concepts I'd heard often but never fully understood. I'm excited about applying the concepts to my personal portfolio and my 401k.

A Financial Advisor's Review.......2005-08-23
Gave this to a client who wanted to be more knowledgeable about basic investing. She spent the weekend working through the book, and called to say it's the best book she's ever read. She said she placed it beside her Bible as her second most important book for her family!
This book is phenemonal !.......2001-09-20
Two thumbs up! Finding an investment book that actually makes sense to me is a rarity. This might actually be the first that actually helps me make money. I would recommend it to any investor, not just the neophytes. It is written in an easy-to-read fashion, but is jam packed with information that anyone can use. In fact, I'm going to give it to everyone I know as a Christmas present. This is the best book I've read all year. Buy it. Read it. Use it.
Really helpful & suprising.......2001-08-14
I read this on a flight overseas. It helped me to understand what I've been doing wrong over the past few years. As a doctor I have very little time to commit to investing however this was without a doubt one of the most useful and practical books I've ever read on investing. I only wish I'd gotten it sooner, it would have stopped me from making a lot of mistakes! Easy to apply and gave me some real peace of mind.
Easier than studying.......2001-06-22
I read this book to see if I could get more out of it than I was getting at my college investments class. It actually helped me to understand the concepts the complicated text books included. As a student I can see this book being very useful to anybody learning about investing. The graphical depictions are awesome. Really interesting and practical, I'm sending this to my Mom to help her out. Now all I need is some money to do it with!
This Was Really Great.......2001-06-21
This book was easy to follow. Fun and insightful. Unlike most investment books its not just a dictionary of investment terms it actually taught me how it all works. I learnt so much about investing, and myself. It was flat out great. I have been investing for some time but this showed me what I was doing wrong. I'm sending it to my kids in college so they get an early start.

Customer Reviews:
A Deceptive Title.......2000-01-14
This book is not appropriate for a first time investor. It never really describes what a stock is, how a bond works, or why interest rates matter. If you have no knowledge of investment, I suggest you find a gentler introduction.
This book is excellent........1999-02-03
I'm no writer, but I've been an investor for 25 years. I have two kids in college. I bought books for both of them. The author makes it clear how to invest without taking needless risks understandable. I know the "On-line Day Traders" are today's hot books, but I've seen traders come and go. I like how the author refers to investment news as investment pornography. It get you all excited but that's about all. I think this is an important book because once this part of your life is handled, you can make different life decisions. Not decisions based on investment catch-up. Today's college kids are watching CNBC and CNN on their breaks. They think that kind of info gives them up to the minute answers. But so much of the news is mis-information. This book will help anyone who is serious about saving and investing. I recommend it.
Badly organized........1999-01-11
Make no mistake: I can see that Chambers is fairly intelligent, and his prose is actually not that bad. But he needs a harsher editor. The book drifts from topic to topic, and the sequence of chapters makes little sense. Especially poor are the discussions of academic theory. Chambers fails to make it clear whom he agrees with, or why. The strategy of "get in, stay in, and ignore the investment noise"--which Chambers is correct to recommend--does not need elaborate citation of investment theory to justify itself. It is becoming common sense, even for "ordinary" investors. (Or maybe I'm too optimistic?) The discussions of diversification contain some insights, but I've read other books that present the same points much more clearly (e.g. anything by Rick Edelman). No, I'm not an experienced investor, but I am a writer, and as a writer and reader I cannot recommend this book.

not bad.......2001-07-30
When acquaintances ask me to explain investing to them, I tell them it's not something you can learn in a five minute conversation, and I tell them to get a few books on the subject. Although I have not found a single book that is completely satisfactory, this one is good. And it's not too large, which unfortunately is important because a lot of people have short attention spans and would never make it through a more verbose primer.

Postconventional Moral Thinking: A Neo-kohlbergian Approach
ASIN: 0805815392 |
Book Description
Every year in this country, some 10,000 college and university courses are taught in applied ethics. And many professional organizations now have their own codes of ethics. Yet social science has had little impact upon applied ethics. This book promises to change that trend by illustrating how social science can make a contribution to applied ethics.
The text reports psychological studies relevant to applied ethics for many professionals, including accountants, college students and teachers, counselors, dentists, doctors, journalists, nurses, school teachers, athletes, and veterinarians. Each chapter begins with the research base of the cognitive-developmental approach--especially linked to Kohlberg and Rest's Defining Issues Test. Finally, the book summarizes recent research on the following issues:
* moral judgment scores within and between professions,
* pre- and post-test evaluations of ethics education programs,
* moral judgment and moral behavior,
* models of professional ethicseducation, and
* models for developing new assessment tools.
Researchers in different professional fields investigate different questions, develop different research strategies, and report different findings. Typically researchers of one professional field are not aware of research in other fields. An important aim of the present book is to bring this diverse research together so that cross-fertilization can occur and ideas from one field can transfer to another.

Customer Reviews:
Invaluable collection of business tools.......2001-09-06
This book is an encyclopedia of business graphics. It provides 101 different types of charts and graphs, and is organized based on how and when the chart and graph types are appropriate. The organization is Tracking, Variances And Comparisons, Presentation, Schematics And Maps, Organizing Data/Information, Probability, Prediction And What-If, Strategy, Financial, and Marketing.
I frequently use charts to display data and considered myself an expert; however, I discovered new chart and graph types, such as web maps and Marimekko graphs, that I had never before encountered. It would be an understatement to say that this book has significantly expanded my graphics vocabulary.
What I especially liked, in addition to the wide array of charts, is the advice on effectively using them. Although the writing is terse, each chart is discussed in a consistent format. The accompanying CD ROM adds even more value to this book because 26 of the tools are provided in either PowerPoint, Excel or Acrobat format. This allows you to tailor and use preformatted charts and graphs instead of having to create them from scratch.
Great reference guide.......2001-05-26
Offers a comprehensive array of information on different ways to present business data. I have not seen such a thorough compilation before, and find that I regularly refer to this when tackling various projects.
