3 out of 5 stars WAY TOO OVERPRICED.......2004-08-20

There are a lot of helpful ideas in this book, and may have been new and special at the time Mr. Ross developed them. But these basic concepts have been expressed over and over again in other more reasonably priced offerings. As a matter of fact, most of what is in this book is available for free at the author's website.

I do not think the cost warrants what is really just a breakout system from a congestion area.

3 out of 5 stars MicroTrading.......2001-12-29

This is a decent book, but I do not believe it is Ross's best work...I also would say that if taken out of context, it might do more harm than good for most traders...Since the majority of aspiring traders are enamored with the concept of trading on the short-term time frames, a book with a title like this will prove to be a large temptation for most traders...Ross, in other books, states that he is very selective about most of his trading and does not regularly "scalp" in and out of the markets...That being said, I would say that I am not certain that some of the techniques that he advertises such as "bracketing" trades in the sp futures would be successful in the current markets...I do, however, agree 100% with time scaling and using larger time frames to enter the trades on the "micro" time frames...I just do not believe that trading breakouts on the micro time frame will lead to long term success...There is far too much "slop and chop" in today's markets for these techniques to have any real consistency...

5 out of 5 stars Fasten Your Safety Belt!.......2001-08-01

I have read the reviews of Trading by the Minute and can identify with almost all of them. I have been there. It's not my intent to argue with some who say the book is too difficult.

Would you want a heart transplant performed by a person who read a book on the subject one time? This stuff does not just jump from the pages into your head and then you go do it. Life just doesn't work that way.

I too when I began to read my first Joe Ross book thought it was too complicated, too hard, too everything! But, I stuck with it, like many of his students. And years later, not weeks nor months, but years, (and after many losses in the market)I began to get it. And, if I can get it, so can you, and probably in less time than it took me.

I'm very slow. I was 50 years old when I discovered Joe Ross. I'm now 60 and things are more difficult to grasp nowadays for me. Joe is like am old friend and when I find myself taking some hits in the market, I pull out maybe, "Trading the Ross Hook" and discover that I have strayed yet once again.

His system for covering costs work. If the specifics he describes no longer fit a market, adjust yourself to the market, but the system is sound.

Joe offers consistency in a world of always looking for the next answer to making money in the market.

When things are slow, I read the S&P trading section of Trading by the Minute. I'm almost sweating by the end. That section is the most spell binding display of trading prowess I've ever experienced.

If you really want to succed in the futures business, do your self a favor, study Joe Ross.

4 out of 5 stars This is as close to the Holy Grail as you can get.......2000-05-29

I have bought over a hundred books on trading. Each has something to say, however slight. This one has more information than most.

Considering the book was written before E-mini and 8 second fills arrived, it is amazing how much trading technique is still valid.

If you are new at futures trading, it will take a while for the information to all make sense. The more I trade, the more stuff in this book comes home.

I make money (and keep money) on what this guy says in this book on a regular basis! What else do I need to say.

Also, check out the Ross Hook book. They are both classics.

Book Description

"An impressive, accessible, up-to-date, and sometimes exhilarating study of the free-market warriors who make up the international trading community."
-- Financial Times

A Million A Million is the inside story of the mysterious and wildly influential world of trading. In our interconnected global markets, traders have become the frontline, free-market warriors closest to the money, closest to the action. Their reactions to world events can topple governments and cause currencies to rise or plummet. They affect the prices we pay for the food we eat, the gasoline we use, the gold in our jewelry, the steel in our cars, even our homes and our mortgages.

Hillary Davis, a former portfolio manager, shows us who these people are, what motivates them, and how they came to be so powerful. And of course she provides compelling insights into the work they do and how they do it.

Based in part on firsthand interviews with superstars in New York and London, A Million A Million gives readers a special opportunity to learn from the candid observations of Leo Melamed, Michael Bloomberg, Muriel Siebert, Bob Mnuchin, David Shaw, Stanley Shopkorn, Eric Sheinbergm Bill Johnston, Gary Lapayover, and many others.

A Million A Million also offers readers a context for understanding today's markets, with a fascinating account of the rise of trading, the evolution of the markets, and the challenges of today's complex, lightning-fast trading environment, as well as a provocative vision of a virtual-reality trading future.

Throughout this revelatory book, you will meet the criminals and the geniuses, the celebrity traders and the newbies, the women traders who "crashed the party," the visionaries, and the larger-than-life personalities. In all, you'll find an exciting portrait of a unique culture that profoundly affects our world.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating read.......2000-04-16

My biggest complaint with most books like this is that they are boring to read because they go on and on with long explanations that lose the point somewhere along the way.I loved this book and was pleasantly surprised. There was no time to get bored. The author moved easily from topic to topic. Her observations were not run of the mill, but were sharp and fascinating. The characters came to life. The book's approach is more like an economic look at the world of trading and its implications rather than a recipe book for how to trade. But as the author said, you can't learn to trade from a 'how to trade book' anyway. If you could, people wouldn't get paid so much to do it.I'd recommend this book very highly.

2 out of 5 stars Breezy, superficial, insubstantive and overly adoring.......2000-04-03

I wanted to like this book, and held out high hopes through the first several chapters. It's real flaw is in its lack of substance. Perhaps the editors or Ms. Davis feared losing readers in overly technical explanations of complex trades, but I believe there is a middle ground which was not even approached. I was also dismayed with the chapter on women in the business--not a single profile of a woman attempting to balance a high powered career with family. As a group, the individuals (men and women) come across as smug, self-satisfied and self-centered (the section where she writes about their charitable work is as fawning as it is laughable). But what this book really needed was more meat--more about programmed trading, the chartists, the value traders, derivatives, day traders, etc.

2 out of 5 stars Trader as Savior.......1999-08-13

Ms. Davis might not stretch to say traders are saviors but she almost deifies them with her genuinely affectionate portrayals here. She's intent on redeeming the profession (as if it needs redeeming--it doesn't), which she imagines the Average Joe scorns and vilifies. I bet the Average Joe pays little attention to hyperactive market makers, compared to the time spent fretting over his or her own investments. Still, Ms. Davis assures us that for every rogue trader like Nick Leeson (who brought down the British Bank, Barings) or Mike Milken (wait, Mike is NOT a crook, she corrects, notwithstanding the criminal charges), there are scads of other, brilliant, hardworking people--possessed of traits you and I could only wish to have--who lubricate the capital markets and provide the fuel for growth. In other words, she's a proselytizing apologist: by compensating she overstates. If you're not in the financial business, you might find this breezy book an acceptable companion at martini time, if you're someone who will gaze in amazement at the hue of a cocktail olive. She's oddly cozy and deferential with her subjects, like a mistress. More like it, the traders are friends whom she has no desire to offend, or perhaps she plans to approach them for future employment. The trouble is, the topic cries out for a critical eye. For those who take investments seriously the text is a great failure, totally lacking in specifics, or even anecdotes that might illuminate. Imagine a cook book that attempts to describe the taste of the recipes without listing any ingredients and you'll understand the problem with "A Million A Minute." Ms. Davis, your readers can take more. A truly entertaining book (and with more meat) is Michael Lewis' "Liar's Poker" and "Pit Bull" by Martin Schwartz. Mr. Schwartz, especially, is a man who has traded for years, who can share his secrets (successes and failures) and who can live to tell about it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-01-19

Finally! A serious, in depth, intellectual business/finance book written by a woman! Bravo! I really liked this book. It gets into everything - the history of trading, how people's minds work, it delves into derivatives, currency trading, internet trading - in short, it was a fascinating read. I'll be looking for her next book.

3 out of 5 stars Some interesting stories & comments, but largely ineffective.......1998-12-11

When I scanned this book initially I was encouraged by the authors last chapter discussion about how the internet transformed trading as we know it today, empowering everyone/anyone to be a trader. After buying and reading it I was disappointed. Except for a few interesting pieces, (like how barings bank became bankrupt), the rest of the stories were uninteresting and did not keep my attention. Too much attempts were made to gloss up the interviews with these super traders. The author would even describe in great detail the furnishings of the traders offices, etc. In the first chapter, was interesting to read how traders move such great sums of money (a million a minute), but the author kept repeating this topic over and over. Finally the book consisted too little substance and not enough practical information for the average investor. If you want to read about the lifestyles of the Wall ST. traders, this book might be for you, but if you're looking for practical and useful information to help you in your trading, look elsewhere.

Out of time, out of money, out of technology - an utterly complete waste of time! You get advice to better buy an Intel 486 PC(sic!) instead of lower numbers (!), an explanation of the Quick Ratio and a sample sessions of how to access financial information using (an outdated) internet service(!). Absolutely not up to the title and an offense to the serious modern investor. Rubbish! Nil Stars (not foreseen, sorry)

This book is horrible. If you know nothing about investing at all, maybe it could help you. But it implies that it is a book about online investing and provides you almost NO information pertaining to on-line investing. If you want help doing stock research do a search for stock sites. You can find them easily using any of the search engines. Many investment magazines will reference useful sites as well.

This book provided absolutely nothing worthwhile regarding on-line investing and just rehashed a number of ideas much better presented by their original authors (like William O'Neill's book).

If you want this book I will give it away free. Just send mail to magicease@aol.com. You pay the shipping and I will mail it to you. If I don't hear from anyone, I will throw it away, total waste of printing materials.

3 out of 5 stars A good book to add to your investment library.......2000-02-15

A useful guide for researching stocks and their corresponding companies, particularly small-capitalization companies. The Author argues rightfully that Individual Investors are better served by investing in small-cap companies because they are at an informational disadvantage when investing in large-cap companies. Most institutions with instant access to financial information from large brokerage houses, do not invest in small-caps because of SEC regulations and small outstanding shares availabe in small-caps . The book teaches fundamental stock valuation, valid for all caps, with clarity and care for the investor . The book teaches very well how to evaluate annual and/or quarterly reports of a company. It also advices on some of the financial resources available on-line, particularly those in AOL. The Author however, seems to avoid any information related to Microsoft. I think the reader will be well served by knowing that among the best award winning financial sites on the web today (if not the best) is MSN Money Central. I recommend the book along with my favorite book "Online Investing" by Jon Markman.I also recommend the Motley Fool site(www.fool.com).

3 out of 5 stars good book for the begining investor.......1999-09-07

this book would be good for someone who has little previous experience investing. Is not so deep that the new investor would get bogged down in terminology and does provide some insight into on-line investing. I was particularily interested in the section on Investors Business Daily..

2 out of 5 stars Remedial Sales advice, not Insurance .......2006-07-23

I buy numerous sales techniques books, way too many as a matter of fact. I bought this book because as a beginning insurance sales agent, I thought it would give me some tips ABOUT INSURANCE SELLING. Not to be, this book is a very basic sales technique guide to selling ANYTHING. If you want basic sales guidance, buy "The Accidental Salesperson" or the Sandler Sales Institute book "You Can't Learn to Ride a Bicycle....".
I bought this book through Amazon because I have never seen it in a bookstore. Do not waste your money on this book...my apologies to the author who undoubtedly could provide insurance related ideas but took a very remedial road with this book. If it is self-published, more power to the author, I wish I could get the guts to commit some of my sales thoughts in a book.

1 out of 5 stars Principles of Principled Life Insurance Selling.......2006-06-29

This book was pretty worthless. First of all it was full of grammatical errors, which leads me to believe the author didn't care very much. Secondly, there was nothing that was discussed that was very helpful. Lots of logical, common sense stuff. The book was not very thick and just dissappointing in general. I notice that it was self published through iUniverse which is understandable since I'm sure no one else would publish it. Can I get my money back?

For years, Ken Brownlee's down-to-earth and straight forward style has provided both humor and wisdom to the insurance industry in "The Iconoclast," his regular monthly column in Claims Magazine, published by The National Underwriter Company. In Winning by the Rules: Ethics and Success in the Insurance Profession he provides an comprehensive discourse on how to "play by the rules" in insurance. This book should be required reading for all insurance personnel in today's business world.

                                    Book Description

Following the introduction of the euro, the European Union has started to debate the desirability and feasibility of more co-ordination in the field of capital income taxation. In contrast with product taxes, the EU Treaty does not provide for explicit authority to harmonize income taxes. So far, little co-ordination has taken place, even though the capital income tax base is much more mobile and hence more difficult to tax than is, for instance, consumption (and labour). There is much discussion on a minimum withholding tax on interest and on a code of conduct for business income taxes, but in practice little real progress is being made in aligning the various capital income taxes. More fundamentally, a broad, tax-policy type of discussion on whether, where, and how capital income should be taxed is lacking. The papers in this volume try to fill this void. Roger Gordon addresses the question of whether or not capital income should be taxed. Subsequently, Peggy Musgrave and Richard Bird / Scott Wilkie try to come to grips with the question of where capital income should be taxedDSin the member state of source or the member state of residence. Michael Devereux and Harry Huizinga / Soren Bo Nielsen then analyse various issues that arise in taxing equity income and imposing a withholding tax on interest. Next, Stephen Bond and Sijbren Cnossen discuss specific comprehensive proposals for taxing capital income in open economies. Finally, Scott Newlon and Charles McLure / Joann Weiner look at the difficulties of and alternatives to maintaining separate corporate income taxes in the EU. This introductory chapter summarizes the various papers and briefly discusses the basic issues and solutions.
