Book Description
A young person who saves $2,000 each year between the ages of 9 and 14, at an interest rate of 9 percent, will have one million dollars at age 65. And that is just by saving! This guide explains the language of business and the skill of investing, so that children can grow up business-literate and get an early start at making their money grow. The concepts of money and simple and compound interest show how saving works; then children learn where Wall Street is, what stocks and bonds do, and, with the help of an adult, the right way to buy or sell a stock, mutual fund, or savings bond. Dozens of activities teach how to balance a checkbook, read stock tables, and know what people are talking about when they mention inflation, recession, and the Federal Reserve Board.
Customer Reviews:
Really good book.......2006-08-19
I agree with the previous reviewer, this book is a great book for kids and it's also great for newbie adults too. I've read at least a dozen investment books and some just give you lots of data (that you don't really care about/understand) and others don't leave you with steps or anything that you can apply in a practical way. I found this book easy to read and if I had a kid I would sit and read it with him/her. Currently, I recommend this book to my friends who are also starting to invest/take control of their finances.
Great for kids, or adults new to investing!.......2004-03-08
Maybe it's just me, but all I ever learned about money growing up was that it should be earned from a job and saved in a bank. This is what most parents teach, because it's what most parents know. And so as a twentysomething college graduate, I have learned more from this book than from any other financial advice book that I've ever read. Most books made for adults start from where the authors believe we adults "should" already be: semi-knowledgeable about money and investment basics and simply in need of more detailed advice. Those types of books always confused me with their jargon and concepts, even when I was a business major in college. This book takes a wide range of topics including basic economics, stock/bond/mutual fund investments, banking, and budgeting and makes it all, well, easy enough for a kid to understand. In doing that, it also serves as a good resource for adults who are true beginners in money management and investing. I wish that I had received this information as a kid, but I think that by reading this book I now know more about money than my parents and plenty of adults ever will. If you are a parent, this is a great way to start your kid on a path to financial literacy. If you are an adult who, like me, was often intimidated and overwhelmed by the world of personal finance, give this book a try to build your confidence and become familiar with various concepts. I don't think that you will find any book intended for adults so willing to break things down the way a children's book does. The funny thing is, most kids that read this book will end up knowing more about money than most adults!

Book Description
The Guide to Understanding Money & Investing in Asia is an essential primer for understanding the financial markets in the Asian-Pacific region and beyond. The guide, published in conjunctioin with The Asian Wall Street Journal and Asia Business News, clearly and visually explains the impact of changing currency values, as well as the principles of investing.
Customer Reviews:
The book is an excellent introduction to investing in Asia........1998-11-16
The book has chapters on Money, Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds, and Futures & Options. Each chapter is written very clearly and pictures are used frequently to simplify descriptions of complex economic and financial ideas.
I would recommend this book to all of our customers who are just getting started with investing in stocks or who would like to know more about more complicated investments such as mutual funds, futures and options.
Many books about investing in Asia are quickly made useless by the gyrations in the volatile Asian markets. Unlike most such investment books, the Asian Wall Street Journal/Asia Business News' Guide to Understanding Money & Investing in Asia focuses on explaining the basic fundamentals of investing. It should be classic introductory investment text for years to come.

Customer Reviews:
Taking Income Tax? Buy this book!.......2004-12-07
I strongly, strongly recommend this book for any law student taking an income tax course who has no experience in accounting. I read this book in the beginning of the class- it's relatively short and incredibly readable- and it made the actual class a breeze. Like most law school subjects, it's easy to lose the forest for the trees, and starting off with this book will let you understand how things fit together before you start slogging through- and get lost in- the Code.
As a corollary to that, this book is basically useless as an exam prep; it's too much of a general survey of the topic, and if you're using this to prep for your final you are in deep trouble. However, if you just signed up for tax in the winter term, buy this book and read it over break- it'll take you a day or two, and you'll be glad you did.
Much more engaging than you'd expect from a tax guru.......2002-09-03
If you get a kick out of the legal writers who make no attempt to hide their arrogance (Scalia comes to mind), then you will enjoy reading Professor Marv. You get the feeling that he often wonders to himself what it's like to be stupid.
Even if you don't take to his "burdened genius" persona, it won't prevent you from seeing new ways of looking at concepts in addition what your casebook provides. He wrote this as a "universal supplement," and has taken care to avoid a retread of any of the major texts.
Unlike previous editions, according to the author, this one has a Q & A section at the end of every chapter. They're useful exercises, especially since they have answers and explanations, unlike most casebooks.
As advertised.......2001-01-28
This book comes as advertised. It's a clear, succinct, helpful, and occasionally witty introduction to the law of federal income taxation. Chirelstein has a rare talent for making the sometime inscrutable rules of tax law accessible to even the most tax-phobic law student. Particularly useful are his examples (even his charts and numbers are easy and helpful!) and "Loose ends," in which he ties up a particular chapter or subchapter with some point of clarification that makes so much sense you're just sure your professor is going to have something about it on the exam. Which also bears a point of warning: law professors read it too! Beware of using it as your principal text, as, thorough as it is, the book does not cover all the cases and doctrines of tax law. I know firsthand that clever professors can and do write Chirelstein-proof exams.
A useful introduction.......2000-04-19
This book is a useful introduction to some of the principal concepts of the U.S. tax law. I recommend it to law students, young tax lawyers and other professionals that need to develop a good foundation of basic tax law concepts. The framework this title will help you develop will be of great assistance in learning how to think about tax issues and understanding more specialized areas of the law.

- Guarantees postings of future significant changes to the tax rules regarding S corporations on the author's Web site, www.robertcooke.com-which you can check for updates as you read the book
- Includes revised rules for home offices
Customer Reviews:
Great book for a beginner.......2003-03-16
I own a company and needed to learn about the basics of tax reduction. I found this book to be useful in just the basics. Because it concentrated on many topics, I believe it wasn't able to focus on many items that would have been useful to me. However, it was well written and easy to read, and I give it five stars because it gave me many broad questions to ask my tax consultant.
Less than what I expected.......2001-11-12
I thought that this book would have tons of lists of tips and give lots of legal, but perhaps edgey advice, but it fell short. I didn't find it easy to read through, I didn't find lots of lists and tips, I like books like this to make it easier.
I am sure the advice is sound, but what I found here didn't seem to live up to what the cover implied.
Where are the S-Corps?.......2001-01-21
I found this book a bit loose, and am looking for a more thorough description of financial management practices unique to an S-Corp. I have been looking for a definitive description of S-Corp accounting practices and concrete tax saving advice. My S-Corp. started last April, from a 3-month old sole proprietorship with all the requisite Federal and State designations. If anyone knows of a book particular to S-Corps, it would be much appreciated. In conclusion, I have found this book helpful, yet not as specific or thorough as I had hoped.
An understandable book on reducing business taxes.......2000-06-29
Full of good ideas conveyed with a clear writing style, this book gives readers lots of good, concrete examples of how different businesses can reduce their tax burden. I was looking to create a new company and wanted to figure out which type of company was right for me (partnership, LLC, Chapter S, or C Corp). By following the examples in the book, I was able to zero in on the right organization for my consulting business. I have no doubt that when it is all said and done, I will have saved thousands of dollars by reading this excellent book.
