3 out of 5 stars Acceptable to some?.......2007-07-16

I have found this book to be a disappointment, but only because I already own Trish Burr's Long & Short Stitch Flowers. The text is basically a copy of Long & Short Stitch and the embroidery appears to be not as refined. No need to own both.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed instructions, beautiful patterns.......2006-08-31

Although you can't "Look Inside" this book at Amazon (currently, anyhow), the cover is exactly representative of the projects inside. This is no encyclopedia of a billion stitches, but a book focused tightly upon reproducing Redoute's beautiful botanical prints in "thread painting."

There were several things about this book that stood out for me:

        Not the Kitchen Sink
        --------------------
Trish Burr wisely restricts herself to a relatively few stitches: long-and-short, satin, stem, split, bullion knot, French knot, and perhaps a couple more. They are presented clearly, in diagrams and words (and photos in some cases), and followed by a small sampler. Then come the Redoute projects...

        Clear Presentation
        ------------------
Each flower (there are 17) is presented in the same format:
        - First, a large-scale photograph of the stitched piece, along with a list of needles and other materials.
        - Then, three line drawings: one for the pattern outlines, one to define which areas are padded or detailed, and one to show color placement.
        - Another, smaller photograph on the same page spread as the diagrams
        - A verbal explanation gives details on stitching each part of the flower: which stitches, in what order, how many strands.

Ms. Burr writes in her Introduction that she aims for clear illustrations and good explanations, and she has achieved her target admirably. Although the format as I've described it may sound repetitive, I found it refreshing not to have to flip back and forth between pages, searching for color keys or stitch info--and equally refreshing not to have all the directions crammed into one cryptic diagram. (Anyone who has ever struggled to decode the projects in "A to Z of Ribbon Embroidery", for instance, knows what I mean. Sumptuous photos of the projects, but figuring out how to reproduce them is murder.)

        Unusual Selection of Subjects
        -----------------------------
It's easy to find embroidery books on English flowers, and many of them are truly gorgeous (Helen Stevens' Masterclass series comes to mind), but if you're looking for something different, something... well, something French!, this may be just the thing for you. Instead of pinks and cornflowers and foxgloves, here are lilies and iris and camellias and magnolias. Roses, morning-glories, and a few exotics like amaryllis, bird-of-paradise, and poppy are also represented. Again, the cover illustration gives a good idea of what you'll find inside. It ain't no cottage garden!

        Achievable
        ----------
All projects are stitched using easily available DMC embroidery floss. None of the stitches are jazzy or difficult. The instructions are so clear that even a relative novice should be able to achieve exciting results. (Again, Helen Stevens comes to mind, but alas, as a counterexample. I love looking at her books, but they have never given me the slightest bit of confidence that I could do work like that.)

        =============

All in all, an excellent book, well worth the money. Bravo, Ms. Burr!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent; Honors Redoute Well, Easy to Use.......2003-12-01

The book provides all of the information anyone would need to teach themselves to embroider at home. The results are terrific. The author has done a superb job of recreating Redoute's elegant flower portraits. There is a great deal of value packed into this small book. Worth the price

5 out of 5 stars Redoute's Finest Flowers in Embroidery.......2002-11-26

I bought this sight unseen which is unlike me but this surely would cause me to try that again !!! It is a needlework book of a higher level. By that I mean the novice and the expert can do it; only skill improves the work appearance. It is fully creative embroidery. I am making all 17 project designs and developing them into a moire quilt or cushions. The designs are smallish (5" or so ) but can then be incorporated into whatever your heart desires. They are very fast to do with any fabric of your choice for any textile idea you might hae in botanicals.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-07-07

Until now my only stitching has been Cross Stitch, but
having seen this publication it just makes me want to try to re-create just a fraction of the wonderful work Trish Burr has put into this book.

She makes it seem so easy, which I am sure it is not; it is
all very well explained, colourful, easy to follow and anyone
interested in stitching should have a copy.

My recommendation to all those stitchers out there "Buy a copy".

"Superb historical biography of one of the more colorful characters in American history . . . spirited. . . . Jeffers deftly weaves together intriguing stage-setting explanations of the age of robber barons, the crash of 1893, and that unforgettable era of unbridled wealth for the few in 1890s New York. As this marvelous story reveals, Brady's lavish lifestyle embodies America's Gilded Age. Highly recommended for all libraries."

        4 out of 5 stars It's Not History, But It's A Great Read.......2006-01-12

"The Power Broker" is often compared to this book, with this book coming out of the comparison as inferior.

The comparison is completely understandable. Similarities:

        1. It's about New York
        2. It's about the depression/WW II era
        3. It's about very strong central figures

One book is hundreds of pages long and carries scads of bibliographic references. And, it's written by a respected New York historian - Robert Caro.

This book is shorter and has more pictures.

It appears that Jeffers and Caro approached their work from very, very different perspectives. Jeffers' angle was more journalistic. And it was effective within that definition: what might be criticized as a lack of historical detail is balanced by a vivid and fun writing style. The moods of 'the LaGuardia era' are captured with complete satisfaction and, to me, blessed brevity.

I had a lot of fun reading this book; it satisfied my desire for a picture of a very, very charismatic and colorful "character." It is not, though, great history. If you want more details, I suppose we're now looking at a more primary source: LaGuardia's own writings, which Jeffers characterizes as self-serving.

I can't comment since I have not read them. But Jeffers does not fawn over LaGuardia, and I enjoyed the ride...

        2 out of 5 stars Beyond "broad".......2005-01-29

The Napoleon of New York by H. Paul Jeffers was not satisfying. The author fails to provide enough of a historical context to allow reader to form their own opinions of LaGuardia. On the contrary, the author bungled the basic chronology of some key events such as the year of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire and the labor strikes which so heavily impacted his career and the direction of local and national politics which he was soon to enter.

Jeffers seems to dubiously attempt to lure the less informed reader into developing the same zealous reverence he has for his subject. The result is skimping on how and why LaGuardia acted in his famous manner and providing more of an anecdotal account that is probably rife with hyperbole.

For such a complex and important figure, The Napoleon of New York simply does not do him any justice. Jeffers needs to take a hint from Robert Caro's seminal biography, The Power Broker.

5 out of 5 stars Little man, big accomlishments.......2004-05-16

Part Italian, part Eastern-European Jew, Fiorello LaGuardia was the appropriate mayor at a time of peak immigrant population in New York. But to acknowledge his popularity on this basis alone is very wrong-minded. "The Napoleon of New York: Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia" by H. Paul Jeffers, while not an extensive, exhaustive biography, goes to great pains to make us understand why the Little Flower has achieved mythic proportions in New York's and America's history books. His remarkable achievements, his pit-bull tenacity, and his Herculean ability to face down the pugnancious Robert Moses, all exhibit LaGuardia's unlimited energy, and his all-encompassing love for his city.

Coming to City Hall during a record-setting unemployment level and disastrous budgets, LaGuardia faced seemingly insurmountable difficulties the minute he sat behind his desk. As Jeffers rightly demonstrates, this diminutive man would not be daunted or intimidated by any group, government agency, or persons of power when prosecuting his agenda. He personally was responsible for funnelling tons of federal money to the city during the Great Depression. He created jobs on one hand, while eliminating the patronage positions held by the hated Tammany machine. No small task. This is but one example that this book explores. There are dozens of others. Pick up "The Napoleon of New York: Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia" and learn more about this truly amazing New Yorker.

5 out of 5 stars Good Popular Biography.......2002-06-01

Paul Jeffers is a master of the popular biography, and he has produced another laudable work in this genre with this chronicle of Fiorello LaGuardia. I approached this book with only a cursory knowledge of LaGuardia, but came away with an enriched understanding of the Little Flower's far-reaching influence on New York City.

I was struck repeatedly by the parallels between LaGuardia and another successful, highly influential Mayor, Giuliani. Both wielded absolute power ("dictatorial," to their detractors), did not brook dissent easily, ran as anti-machine reformers (barely gaining office initially but subsequently amassing larger majorities), assailed corruption and malfeasance, and left New York City a markedly better place than they found it.

By his own admission, Jeffers's is NOT the definitive LaGuardia biography. He writes with broad brushstrokes, painting a colorful, big-picture portrait, and avoiding the pitfalls of needless minutae. Jeffers also has a talent for placing his subjects in the context of history. (To wit: LaGuardia spent his formative years in Prescott, Arizona, whose Mayor was the famous Bucky O'Neill of the "Rough Riders" lore. During the Spanish-American War, young LaGuardia was a stringer for a St. Louis newspaper, where he was in the company of such legendary war correspondents as Richard Harding Davis and Stephen Crane.)

As a result of this style, all of Jeffers's biographies are entertaining, easy to read, and provide a succinct overview to laypersons with a passion for history. If you fit that description, "The Napoleon of New York" is for you.

5 out of 5 stars The Napoleon of New York.......2002-04-15

Fiorello LaGuardia was an amazing character. He was loved and hated depending on who you asked, but one thing is for sure- he did great things for the city of New York. This biography explores his immigrant roots, his rise to power, and his quest for revitalizing New York. A tough politician indeed, but one who brought greatness and glory to his city.

          Book Description

Every successful marriage has a story worth sharing.

This book shares 40 inspiring stories of couples who have dedicated themselves to making their marriage thrive right here in Northeast Ohio.

Each is a real-life romance. They may not all read like a Harlequin novel, but they deliver a message far stronger because they're real stories of real people, just like us, who have dealt with and overcome many of the same challenges, issues, and plain old-fashioned problems all couples face.

Some are powerful. Some are simple. Each is a touching look at a pair of people who have found their own way to build a life together.

These 40 couples are young and old, black and white, professional and blue collar. They have many kinds of marriages—high-school sweethearts, professional partnerships, surprise romances, and even re-marriages. They have based relationships carefully on centuries-old tradition, and they have boldly broken boundaries. Their very variety reflects the melting pot of their chosen hometown.

Some are people just like your friends and neighbors; you might meet them on any given day in any home in Northeast Ohio.

Some are local celebrities, like TV8 anchor Wilma Smith and her husband, Tom Gerber; former Indian's manager Mike Hargrove and his wife, Sharon; and Cleveland mayor Jane Campbell and her husband, Hunter Morrison.

And some are ordinary people coping with extraordinary situations, like Crystal and Steve Dzurnak, who battled cancer together; and Mary Lou and Jim Beers, whom paralysis could not stop.

These stories are like 40 small gifts. They can help any couple rediscover the values that make their own relationship so meaningful. They offer a glimpse into successful marriages that shine with the transformative power of deep personal commitment.

5 out of 5 stars from a Texas journalist: lovely book; wonderful photographs.......2004-12-08

I thought this book was inspirational; a glimpse into the lives of people that you never get in your daily life. I think Kathy Dawson has a wonderful way with words, and can make what could be a mundane life appear interesting and important. I don't think it was supposed to be an in-depth novella exposing the innermost lives of each couple; I believe it was written with the intention of bringing a relationship to life for the reader. A certain amount of privacy had to be maintained, I imagine. As a journalist myself I can appreciate this.
I enjoyed the photographs, which helped me to envision each couple; I thought they were very creative and well done. We could use a book like this down here Dallas way.

          1 out of 5 stars Saccharine Isn't As Sweet.......2004-10-15

I've met and respected the Beers for a number of years. Their story is an inspiration. That being said one half of two other couples chronicled in the book worked with me at a local television station. (One has since moved on hint hint) Let's just say that to use the term "glossed over" is putting it mildly. If you want cute little stories that make you feel warm and fuzzy then by all means buy the book. If on the other hand you want to feel like you really got to know the couples featured forget about it. My significant other thought it was "romantic" especially since there were coworkers involved. Yuck! Rent a chick flick instead and save the $ difference. At least then you know you're ingesting fiction.

            Book Description

Matters of Chance is a glorious, aptivating novel about Morgan and Maude Shurtliff, who fall in love and marry in the years before World War II. Unable to have children of their own, Morgan and Maude adopt twin girls. The four go home to their beautiful house in the country outside of New York City and begin to settle into what they hope will be a long and happy life. When the twins are still young, Morgan is called to serve in World War II, leaving Maude to raise her daughters alone. Jeannette Haien has rendered Morgan's war experiences with astonishing detail, just as she has captured the American post-war era with a precision that is unrivaled in recent fiction.

            1 out of 5 stars Perfectly Boring!.......2001-07-16

I agree with a couple of the previous reviews. This book was just packed with perfect people who always have perfect, politically correct, supportive reactions to EVERYTHING that is thrown their way. It is so boring because it is so predictable. Every character will always do the best possible thing. I could not connect with any of them. They seemed inhuman and unrealistic. I read Haien's The All of It and enjoyed that short novel, but Matters of Chance has nothing to recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary, eloquent, poignant, a must read........1999-09-26

My only words to describe my experience was to a dear friend who also read this extraordinary novel and my words were "Okay, now what do I do". It left me feeling as if any other book I would read would pale in comparison.

            2 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......1999-01-19

My book club read Haien's THE ALL OF IT and loved it. I was looking forward to another excellent book, but I was very disappointed. I didn't connect with any of the characters and I especially didn't care for the wartime descriptions; they didn't seem realistic. The twins were not characterized well; I didn't feel I knew them. Too much time passed, too quickly for any real feelings to develop. I have to admit I just skimmed the last half of the book to see what the big mystery re: the twins was. And that was anticlimatic. I liked the first novel so much better. It hardly seems to be the same author.

2 out of 5 stars Matters of Chance would make a good tv movie of the week........1998-07-02

This book had an excellent beginning, filled with promise but quickly devolved into predictability. Most affecting section was the main character's wartime experiences. There was some expectation that, once home, some dramatic conflict would start, since he was changed by his wartime exploits. Instead, we are subjected to a relentless onslought of perfect people who always do the right, noble thing. Bits of historic arcana are sprinkled in for some odd reason -- perhaps to remind us that there is a real world out there. Subjects such as homosexuality, adoption, adultery are all reacted to with grace and equanimity. Isn't pretty to think so. I don't have a problem with noble and uplifting characters -- but there has to some bad guys, if for no other reason than texture!

4 out of 5 stars wonderfully written story of a man's life and lovesOf.......1998-05-10

Of the many new books I have read recently, I enjoyed this one the most. Ms. Haien writes well and captures the sincerity and decentness of her main character Morgan. His love for his wife and adopted daughters and the progression of his life through many stages lead the reader through every page. The veiled nature of the older woman whom he befriends lends a richness to the story and the plot twist near the end is unexpected. I have not read others of Ms. Haien's work, but I expect to as a result of the pleasure I received from this work.smh
