Misleading title.......2001-11-25
Although some of the papers contain useful
information, the book does not deserve to
be called a "handbook": it is more like a
loose compilation, thus making it useless
as a reference.
I ordered the book in 1998 at my local
bookstore and felt cheated after the
first browsing. The extra star is there
to praise the occasional pearl of wisdom
you will encounter while reading through
all 15 chapters.
Finally, the cover advertises with
"valuable software included", referring
to a demo (!) of EXOTICOP (c). I strongly
disagree: the program is nothing more
than a black-scholes type exotics pricer
with a primitive interface, barely touching
the level of an undergraduate paper.
To add insult to injury, some of the
input parameters are frozen in the
demo version.
To put it in dealer's phraseology, this
book is a big yours.

Defending America: Military Culture and the Cold War Court-Martial (Politics and Society in Twentieth Century America)
Elizabeth Lutes Hillman Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0691118043 |
Book Description
From going AWOL to collaborating with communists, assaulting fellow servicemen to marrying without permission, military crime during the Cold War offers a telling glimpse into a military undergoing a demographic and legal transformation. The post-World War II American military, newly permanent, populated by draftees as well as volunteers, and asked to fight communism around the world, was also the subject of a major criminal justice reform. By examining the Cold War court-martial, Defending America opens a new window on conflicts that divided America at the time, such as the competing demands of work and family and the tension between individual rights and social conformity.
Using military justice records, Elizabeth Lutes Hillman demonstrates the criminal consequences of the military's violent mission, ideological goals, fear of homosexuality, and attitude toward racial, gender, and class difference. The records also show that only the most inept, unfortunate, and impolitic of misbehaving service members were likely to be prosecuted. Young, poor, low-ranking, and nonwhite servicemen bore a disproportionate burden in the military's enforcement of crime, and gay men and lesbians paid the price for the armed forces' official hostility toward homosexuality. While the U.S. military fought to defend the Constitution, the Cold War court-martial punished those who wavered from accepted political convictions, sexual behavior, and social conventions, threatening the very rights of due process and free expression the Constitution promised.

Antitrust and the Formation of the Postwar World (Columbia Studies in Contemporary American History)
Wyatt Wells Manufacturer: Columbia University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 023112399X |
Book Description
Today antitrust law shapes the policy of almost every large company, no matter where headquartered. But this wasn't always the case. Before World War II, the laws of most industrial countries tolerated and even encouraged cartels, whereas American statutes banned them. In the wake of World War II, the United States devoted considerable resources to building a liberal economic order, which Washington believed was necessary to preserving not only prosperity but also peace after the war. Antitrust was a cornerstone of that policy. This fascinating book shows how the United States sought to impose -- and with what results -- its antitrust policy on other nations, especially in Europe and Japan.
Wyatt Wells chronicles how the attack on cartels and monopoly abroad affected everything from energy policy and trade negotiations to the occupation of Germany and Japan. He shows how a small group of zealots led by Thurman Arnold, who became head of the Justice Department's Antitrust Division in 1938, targeted cartels and large companies throughout the world: IG Farben of Germany, Mitsui and Mitsubishi of Japan, Imperial Chemical Industries of Britain, Philips of the Netherlands, DuPont and General Electric of the United States, and more. Wells brilliantly shows how subsequently, the architects of the postwar economy -- notably Lucius Clay, John McCloy, William Clayton, Jean Monnet, and Ludwig Erhard -- uncoupled political ideology from antitrust policy, transforming Arnold's effort into a means to promote business efficiency and encourage competition.

How to Pay Zero Taxes: 2000 Edition (How to Pay Zero Taxes, 2000)
Jeff Schnepper Manufacturer: Mcgraw-Hill ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0071352465 |
Book Description
Totally updated for 2000, this is a unique tax guide that focuses on how to pay less taxes, rather than focusing on how to fill out the forms and figure out what you owe. Unlike most of the brand-name tax guides, its primary perspective is tax saving not tax preparation.Organized all around the IRS sanctioned deductions, shelters, credits, and exemptions, this book stands apart from the crowd because it's easy to read, easy to apply, and it zeroes in on what people really care about--paying less to the IRS!
Includes comprehensive coverage of more deductions than any tax book, including those related to: child care and elderly care, moving expenses, job hunting expenses, mortgages and points, investment expenses, and 401(k)s. The book is organized into six sections, including:
(1) exclusions,
(2) credits,
(3) general deductions,
(4) "below the line" deductions,
(5) traditional tax shelters, and
(6) super tax shelters.
Fully updated with all the latest tax changes as of October 1999, this annual guide delivers more tax-saving tips than any other guide. It outlines the easiest, most practical strategies consumers can use to lower their taxes this year, next year, and beyond-by focusing on hundreds of legal ways to preserve pre-tax income and profit. Schnepper's text is clear, concise, and not loaded with "accountant speak."

Why look for a Tax break? When there is No income tax.......2004-04-03
I personally have not paid income tax in over 8 years. I received one letter from the IRS to which I replied and informed them that I did not pay taxes for the years in question because I am under no obligation to do so (I included other statements with knowledge I gained from this amazing book.) I have never heard from them again & I never have had an IRS agaent come to my house. Don't let the IRS use their scare tatics to steal your hard-earned money, illegally seize your propery, and bank accounts. Ignornance of the average American is what they prey upon. Get the knowledge to See The Light.
Mr Schiff's book will greatly change your opinions of our Government. (NOT THE BOOK THIS REVIEW IS WRITTEN UNDER)
I highly recommed all of Irwin Schiff's books. Extremely imformative / easy to follow / and above all undoubtely proves that there is No Income Tax.

Somewhat Helpful But Misses the More Important Point.......2003-10-06
A book like this may be useful under the current system, but, there is the danger that it will keep you so busy chasing deductions and exemptions that you will forget what the real problem is.
This is a good book...BUT there are better ones available.......2003-01-30
How To Pay Zero Tax has been out for quite a while and is actually one of the first tax planning books that I have read. It is fairly comprehensive and actually better than most of the tax planning books out there. However, there are two main problems with it though for the average reader.
First, it is literally much too much. It has over 600 pages and some of it isn't clear. Mr.Schnepper tries to be all things to all people, which doesn't really succeed. I guess a point in all directions is a circle. In fact, despite its length, some of the discussion on topics tends to be too brief.
The second problem that has been noted by other reviewers is that this book hasn't be kept up to date. I guess Mr. Schnepper is "resting on his laurals."
Let me be clear about this: it's not that I disliked this book. It is just that there are a number of other, more up to date and better written tax books that I would recommend instead such as Lower Your Taxes: BIG TIME by a Mr. Botkin.
